:00:00. > :00:09.European military observers held in Eastern Ukraine by pro-Russian

:00:10. > :00:13.separatists are paraded before the media. One of the group has been

:00:14. > :00:17.released tonight, as diplomatic efforts continue to free the

:00:18. > :00:20.remaining seven. More details emerge about the five

:00:21. > :00:30.British servicemen who were killed in a helicopter crash in

:00:31. > :00:34.Afghanistan. Our focus for the immediate future is to ensure that

:00:35. > :00:36.the families receive the support they need at this most difficult of

:00:37. > :00:40.times. they need at this most difficult of

:00:41. > :00:43.Pope Francis declares two of his predecessors saints in an historic

:00:44. > :00:47.ceremony at the Vatican. And a slip from Gerard throws the

:00:48. > :01:08.title race wide open, as Chelsea beat Liverpool at Anfield.

:01:09. > :01:12.Good Evening. Negotiations are continuing for the

:01:13. > :01:16.release of European military observers being held by pro-Russian

:01:17. > :01:19.separatists in Eastern Ukraine. The eight observers appeared in public

:01:20. > :01:23.for the first time under armed guard in Slaviansk. One has been released

:01:24. > :01:27.tonight, apparently on health grounds. Meanwhile the foreign

:01:28. > :01:30.secretary, William Hague, said new sanctions against Russia for its

:01:31. > :01:41."bullying" behaviour will go ahead. Our correspondent Steve Rosenberg

:01:42. > :01:45.reports from Donetsk. In Sloviansk today, pro-Russian

:01:46. > :01:50.militia paraded their most high-profile hostages, the military

:01:51. > :01:54.observers from Europe who were abducted on Friday. The hostages

:01:55. > :01:58.were nervous as they entered the town hall, and exhausted after two

:01:59. > :02:05.days held captive in Ukraine's most dangerous town. We have no

:02:06. > :02:13.indication when we will be sent home to our countries and to see our

:02:14. > :02:20.families. The militants who seized them have called them NATO spies but

:02:21. > :02:29.they deny that. The Vienna document diplomats come to the nation without

:02:30. > :02:32.arms. We are not fighters. We are diplomats in uniform. Later, one of

:02:33. > :02:36.the observers was released on medical grounds. Talks are

:02:37. > :02:43.continuing to try and free the whole team. Earlier, the pro-Russian

:02:44. > :02:46.militia took more hostages. These are Ukrainian special forces

:02:47. > :02:50.officers, accused of planning and operation against the militants. The

:02:51. > :02:57.West has denounced the hostagetaking. It accuses Russia of

:02:58. > :03:01.escalating tension in eastern Ukraine and of orchestrating the

:03:02. > :03:06.separatist movement here. Fresh economic sanctions are coming.

:03:07. > :03:13.Britain believes they will bite. Already we have seen capital out of

:03:14. > :03:18.Russia this year and serious. The Russian stock market, so no one

:03:19. > :03:24.should estimate the impact on Russia and Russia's own interests have

:03:25. > :03:32.continued the escalation of this crisis. The TV station Internet has

:03:33. > :03:38.now been seized so it can be replaced with Russian television.

:03:39. > :03:43.Attempts to seize strategically important buildings like this one

:03:44. > :03:46.and the kidnap of hostages, it all increases the pressure on Kiev and

:03:47. > :03:52.complicated efforts to crack down on pro-Russian militants. It means so

:03:53. > :03:57.far Kiev is failing to restore control.

:03:58. > :03:59.The Ministry of Defence says the site where a Lynx helicopter crashed

:04:00. > :04:01.in Afghanistan yesterday, killing five British servicemen, has been

:04:02. > :04:05.secured and an investigation is being carried out. Three were from

:04:06. > :04:09.the Army Air Corps, one was an RAF serviceman, and another a reservist

:04:10. > :04:13.with the Army Intelligence Corps. The MoD said the crash in Kandahar

:04:14. > :04:22.Province was a tragic accident. Our defence correspondent, Caroline

:04:23. > :04:28.Wyatt reports. The flag at RAF Odiham today flew at

:04:29. > :04:37.half-mast against a leaden sky. At the service men's base, a sense of

:04:38. > :04:41.great shock and deep sadness. Our heartfelt condolences go out the

:04:42. > :04:45.families at this most difficult time. The investigation into this

:04:46. > :04:51.accident is ongoing, but this is not the time now speculation or comment.

:04:52. > :04:55.Our focus for the immediate future is to ensure that the families

:04:56. > :05:04.receive the support they need at this most difficult of times. Lynx

:05:05. > :05:08.helicopters have been vital throughout the conflict in

:05:09. > :05:12.Afghanistan. This is footage from Helmand last summer. The gunner

:05:13. > :05:16.constantly on the lookout for threats below. The pilot and

:05:17. > :05:22.co-pilot in front, their skills honed by long years of training. The

:05:23. > :05:26.Lynx helicopter has been in service for 40 years and it has been used in

:05:27. > :05:29.a variety of roles by the army and Royal Navy. The helicopter which

:05:30. > :05:39.crashed would have been armed with a heavy machine gun. It has a good

:05:40. > :05:44.safety record. The last fatal military crash was a Royal Navy Lynx

:05:45. > :05:50.helicopter in 2004. The Ministry of Defence is certain it was not enemy

:05:51. > :05:54.action. You could be looking at a technical problem, a malfunction,

:05:55. > :06:01.environmental conditions or pilot error. At this stage it is far too

:06:02. > :06:07.early to say. All I would say is Afghanistan is regarded as being an

:06:08. > :06:10.incredibly hostile environment for helicopter flying. The tragedy has

:06:11. > :06:14.brought tributes from the Prime Minister and many others. David

:06:15. > :06:18.Cameron said it brought home the sacrifices made by the UK's Armed

:06:19. > :06:21.Forces in Afghanistan. The law here is to be changed to

:06:22. > :06:24.make it illegal to download information about how to groom

:06:25. > :06:27.children for abuse. The Prime Minister has said the new offence

:06:28. > :06:38.will close a legal loophole which currently allows paedophiles to

:06:39. > :06:41.write and distribute such material. Two of the most influential popes of

:06:42. > :06:45.the 20th century have been made saints at a ceremony in the Vatican.

:06:46. > :06:49.In front of hundreds of thousands of people in St Peter's Square, John

:06:50. > :06:51.the 23rd and John Paul the II, were canonised by the current Pope,

:06:52. > :06:53.Francis. This report from our Religious Affairs correspondent,

:06:54. > :07:01.Robert Pigott, who's at the Vatican .it does contain some flash

:07:02. > :07:05.photography. It was joyful, Solomon, spectacular

:07:06. > :07:10.and humble, the moment when the Pope declared two of its own had entered

:07:11. > :07:17.heaven as Saints. The canonisation took place in the presence of bodily

:07:18. > :07:22.relics of the two men. A vial of blood from John Paul II and a sliver

:07:23. > :07:29.of skin from John XXIII. A greeting from Pope Benedict XVI. Never before

:07:30. > :07:34.have two living popes overseen the making of saints. In Latin, Pope

:07:35. > :07:42.Francis recited the formula by which mortal men were recognised as in

:07:43. > :07:47.mortal. We declare and define message on the 23rd and John Paul II

:07:48. > :07:51.to be saints, and we enrolled among the saints, decreeing that they will

:07:52. > :07:57.be venerated as such by the whole church.

:07:58. > :08:01.Almost a million came to witness this unprecedented event, packing St

:08:02. > :08:06.Peter's Square, the broad boulevard before it and the banks of the River

:08:07. > :08:10.Tiber beyond. Many were from Poland, a renewed up welling in

:08:11. > :08:16.pride and affection for Pope John Paul II. His canonisation coming

:08:17. > :08:21.nine years after his death is the quickest ever. Some who questioned

:08:22. > :08:26.his handling of sex abuse say it happened too soon. Many others say

:08:27. > :08:31.he, just like Pope John, lived a holy life. John Paul travelled the

:08:32. > :08:38.world as the Church's charismatic Evangelist, giving Catholics renewed

:08:39. > :08:40.confidence. John XXIII in or grated the second Vatican Council which

:08:41. > :08:45.brought far-reaching reform to the church. Veteran churchmen say

:08:46. > :08:52.together they helped shape Catholicism as it is today. Pope

:08:53. > :08:57.John, only five years but he conquered the world, if you like.

:08:58. > :09:04.Good Pope John. John Paul came over to me as a free man. Here I am, with

:09:05. > :09:10.my background, I am a Polish priest, Bishop, now Pope, and this is what I

:09:11. > :09:16.stand for. It was a very powerful one. It was Pope Francis who decided

:09:17. > :09:20.to balance the canonisation of the traditionalist John Paul the

:09:21. > :09:24.reforming Pope John. Both he says are models for the papacy and for a

:09:25. > :09:27.united church. Climbers are returning from Mount

:09:28. > :09:30.Everest base camp in Nepal, after Sherpa guides cancelled all climbing

:09:31. > :09:34.this year - in memory of the 16 Sherpas who died in an avalanche

:09:35. > :09:37.nine days ago. One survivor, who witnessed his colleagues die under

:09:38. > :09:41.the ice, has told the BBC he will never return to the mountain. Our

:09:42. > :09:52.correspondent Yogita Limaye sent this report from Kathmandu.

:09:53. > :09:57.A wall of ice which swept away everything in its path. It struck

:09:58. > :10:01.just as Nepal's Sherpa guides were preparing the route for this year's

:10:02. > :10:06.climbing season. It is the worst tragedy this mountain has ever seen.

:10:07. > :10:12.The ultimate summit for any climate, hundreds tried to scale its icy

:10:13. > :10:18.slopes every year and it is the Sherpas they depend on to lead the

:10:19. > :10:24.way. This man was buried under the snow for three hours before he was

:10:25. > :10:30.rescued. Out of danger, still in shock. He said he has seen his

:10:31. > :10:38.fellow guides die around him. TRANSLATION: The ice fell on us, it

:10:39. > :10:43.was so scary. This is my last climb. I will never go up Everest

:10:44. > :10:47.again. In memory of those who died, most of the other guides have

:10:48. > :10:51.decided that this year, they will not make the climb. Groups have been

:10:52. > :10:59.returning from the mountain's base camp. This man was one who came

:11:00. > :11:03.back. Three years ago I was in a big skiing accident. I could not even

:11:04. > :11:07.walk up a flight of stairs. Here I am now taking on Everest so I was

:11:08. > :11:14.very much looking forward to it and then to find that this was closed,

:11:15. > :11:19.it was an emotional thing for me. For a country which depends heavily

:11:20. > :11:23.on tourism, this is a loss in many ways. The climbing season for Mount

:11:24. > :11:29.Everest seems like it is over this year. While many of the climbers

:11:30. > :11:34.might hope to return another year, this tragedy means that the

:11:35. > :11:42.Sherpas' lives have been changed forever. This woman was the wife of

:11:43. > :11:47.one of those. She has an 11-month-old baby girl. She is the

:11:48. > :11:52.mother and father now she tells me. I have to take care of her, she is

:11:53. > :11:56.completely hopeless, I want the government to give me a job, she

:11:57. > :12:01.says. It will be hard for her to look back at the Mountains which

:12:02. > :12:05.once gave her life which have now taken away so much.

:12:06. > :12:13.With all the big sports news - here's Lizzie Greenwood-Hughes at

:12:14. > :12:16.the BBC Sport Centre. Good evening. The Premier League title-race is

:12:17. > :12:19.wide open after Liverpool lost 2-0 to Chelsea and Manchester City beat

:12:20. > :12:22.Crystal Palace by the same scoreline today. Liverpool are still league

:12:23. > :12:25.leaders, but with Chelsea and City breathing down their necks - their

:12:26. > :12:35.ambitions of a first title in 24 years have been dented. Andy Swiss

:12:36. > :12:40.watched the action. They began with deafening optimism,

:12:41. > :12:45.but for Liverpool fans, this was a day the title race took a painful

:12:46. > :12:53.twist. Their team began well against a weakened Chelsea, but in first

:12:54. > :12:56.half stoppage time, a calamity. A stumble from Steven Gerard, of all

:12:57. > :13:03.people, allowing Demba Ba to lead the visitors ahead. After the break,

:13:04. > :13:08.Liverpool tried to find their fluency, but Chelsea and their

:13:09. > :13:19.41-year-old keeper stood firm. In injury time, with the entire

:13:20. > :13:25.Liverpool defence in attack, Chelsea had the victory. Another

:13:26. > :13:32.chest-thumping win for Chelsea. ForLiverpool, the destiny of the

:13:33. > :13:36.title was now out of their hands. For Manchester City, they had the

:13:37. > :13:39.initiative as long as they could win their remaining matches. Against

:13:40. > :13:43.Crystal Palace, they made the perfect start, Edin Dzeko putting

:13:44. > :13:48.them in front. If that was good, what followed was even better. Yaya

:13:49. > :13:52.Toure with an amazing run and a masterful finish. City were in

:13:53. > :13:57.cruise control. After the break, they could not find a third but they

:13:58. > :14:02.did not lead to. In two hours they had gone from title underdogs to

:14:03. > :14:06.title favourites on an emotional, dramatic and potentially season

:14:07. > :14:10.defining day. At the other end of the table

:14:11. > :14:13.Sunderland are out of the relegation zone. Conor Wickham scoring twice in

:14:14. > :14:17.their 4-nil victory over Cardiff, who had a man sent-off. It's

:14:18. > :14:21.Wickham's fifth goal in three games. Cardiff are now bottom of the table.

:14:22. > :14:23.There were two Scottish Premiership matches today. Champions Celtic

:14:24. > :14:27.thrashed Inverness Caledonian Thistle 6-0. And the Edinburgh derby

:14:28. > :14:31.was won by Hearts - who are already down. Callum Paterson scoring twice

:14:32. > :14:34.in their 2-1 victory at Easter Road. The result leaves Hibernian just a

:14:35. > :14:37.point off the relegation play-off position.

:14:38. > :14:42.Jonny Wilkinson's Toulon side will play Saracens in the final of Rugby

:14:43. > :14:45.Union's Heineken Cup. The defending champions beat Munster 24-16 in

:14:46. > :14:47.Marseille this afternoon, 21 of those points kicked by England's

:14:48. > :14:52.World Cup winner, Wilkinson with six penalties and a drop goal. The final

:14:53. > :15:00.is on 24th May at the Millenium Stadium. Well Europe's other

:15:01. > :15:04.competition - The Amlin Challenge Cup final is on the same weekend in

:15:05. > :15:07.Cardiff and it'll between Bath and Northampton after two tries from Rob

:15:08. > :15:16.Webber helped Bath beat Wasps 24-18 today. And that is the sport, back

:15:17. > :15:19.to you. There's more throughout the evening on the BBC News Channel. I'm

:15:20. > :15:20.back with the late news at
