:00:24. > :00:28.Good evening. Pro-Russian separatists in Eastern Ukraine have

:00:29. > :00:32.freed a team of international observers they took hostage a week

:00:33. > :00:36.ago. The men were taken in the city of Sloviansk, along with five

:00:37. > :00:40.Ukrainian officers, who have also been released. There has been

:00:41. > :00:43.further fighting today date in Eastern Ukraine Ian town of

:00:44. > :00:49.Kramatorsk. It follows the deaths of 40 people in clashes between

:00:50. > :00:53.government supporters and opponents in Odessa. From there, Fergal Keane

:00:54. > :00:57.sent this report. At the entrance of the burned-out

:00:58. > :01:02.hallway, riot police. Looking uncertain. Some, dejected. They

:01:03. > :01:09.faced the anger after the tragedy of the night before. People have been

:01:10. > :01:12.expecting some kind of trouble in Odessa, but nothing on the scale of

:01:13. > :01:16.what has happened. There is real anger here, but also more than

:01:17. > :01:23.anything else a profound sense of shock. Four people feel the police

:01:24. > :01:28.failed to protect those who died here. Hanging from the broken

:01:29. > :01:33.windows, the makeshift ropes, some used to try and escape. These

:01:34. > :01:38.pictures capture the desperate plight of those fleeing the inferno.

:01:39. > :01:43.And in the aftermath it was not just the police who were the target of

:01:44. > :01:47.anger. Most people I spoke with said they were not separatists, but they

:01:48. > :01:49.feared their ethnic Russian culture was going to be destroyed by the

:01:50. > :01:56.government and its Western supporters. Anastacia is an ethnic

:01:57. > :02:07.Russian and English teacher. What do you think could happen to you? Well,

:02:08. > :02:12.anything. Anything. There is no law. No law in the country, no law, I

:02:13. > :02:18.tell you. And nobody will answer for what happened yesterday. Nobody. It

:02:19. > :02:21.was pro-Ukrainian mobs who chased the people into the building and

:02:22. > :02:26.whom witnesses blamed for throwing petrol bombs. The government though

:02:27. > :02:33.blames Russia for instigating the violence. There was one piece of

:02:34. > :02:37.good news today. These international military observers taken captive a

:02:38. > :02:43.week ago were released by labels along with five Ukrainian officers.

:02:44. > :02:47.-- released by rebels. For one observer, intense relief. It feels

:02:48. > :02:55.great. We are very relieved. We are longing to get back home to our

:02:56. > :02:59.families and loved ones. But even as that news was being welcomed there

:03:00. > :03:03.was fresh fighting in the East. These images apparently from the

:03:04. > :03:08.town of Kramatorsk, close to where yesterday's military offensive by

:03:09. > :03:10.the state began. The government says it has retake in Kramatorsk, but

:03:11. > :03:17.there has been no independent confirmation of this yet. Back in

:03:18. > :03:21.Odessa, an image that speaks to a nation's anguish. As Ukraine's

:03:22. > :03:28.violence escalates to a new and perilous phase.

:03:29. > :03:33.Rescue workers have abandoned their search for any more survivors who

:03:34. > :03:37.may be buried under two landslides in north-eastern Afghanistan. 350

:03:38. > :03:41.bodies have been recovered so far, but officials say more than 2000

:03:42. > :03:46.people are feared dead. Maybe Buchanan reports.

:03:47. > :03:50.It was an entire hillside which collapsed, triggered by heavy rain.

:03:51. > :03:56.A torrent of mud swept down the ravine, varying the village below.

:03:57. > :04:01.Local residents came to help, but their bare hands and shovels were no

:04:02. > :04:07.much for the scale of the disaster. This woman narrowly survived. She

:04:08. > :04:12.said four or five from my family were killed, four or five are alive.

:04:13. > :04:18.I am only half alive. Another villager was devastated. All of our

:04:19. > :04:24.lives are buried here, he said. Now, we are digging for the dead bodies.

:04:25. > :04:29.In this remote mountainous part of north-eastern Afghanistan life was

:04:30. > :04:35.already precarious. The Army has now brought some food and water. This

:04:36. > :04:40.man said they needed more. We need tents, so we can be sheltered from

:04:41. > :04:44.the rain. Around 700 houses are still under threat from flooding and

:04:45. > :04:48.more landslides. The UN is mobilising more aid, but for now

:04:49. > :04:53.survivors are at the mercy of the elements. Beside the certain rescue

:04:54. > :04:58.operation, what we are doing now is helping facilitate the needs of

:04:59. > :05:02.around 700 families, more than 4000 people have been displaced either

:05:03. > :05:06.directly or indirectly by what has happened. These people are used to

:05:07. > :05:11.hardship, but they have lost everything. They stare at what was

:05:12. > :05:16.once their community. It is now a mass grave.

:05:17. > :05:24.And woman has been arrested on suspicion of assault -- assaulting a

:05:25. > :05:29.resident of a care home in Essex that was featured on Panorama. Seven

:05:30. > :05:33.members of staff were sacked. It showed residents being taunted and

:05:34. > :05:35.humiliated. The woman who was arrested was later released on

:05:36. > :05:40.police bail pending further enquiries.

:05:41. > :05:43.Police in Northern Ireland are continuing to question the Sinn Fein

:05:44. > :05:47.leader Gerry Adams in connection with the murder of Jean McConville,

:05:48. > :05:52.a mother of ten who was killed in 1972. He denies all the allegations.

:05:53. > :05:56.At a rally today, Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness said Mr Adams' arrest was

:05:57. > :06:00.the result of political policing, but Northern Ireland's Justice

:06:01. > :06:05.Minister has defended the decision to question him. Nick Higham

:06:06. > :06:09.reports. On the Falls Road in Wells Belfast police helpfully closed the

:06:10. > :06:13.street while Martin McGuinness laid into their employer. For the third

:06:14. > :06:16.day in a row he attacks some members of the Police Service of Northern

:06:17. > :06:19.Ireland for what he claimed was the politically motivated arrest of

:06:20. > :06:24.Gerry Adams. No police force anywhere in the world is immune from

:06:25. > :06:29.criticism if it is acting in a politically biased and partisan

:06:30. > :06:36.fashion. The arrest of Gerry Adams is the evidence of that fact there

:06:37. > :06:42.is an element in the PSNI who are against the peace process and who

:06:43. > :06:46.hate Gerry Adams and hate Sinn Fein. The occasion was the unveiling of a

:06:47. > :06:49.new mural hailing the Sinn Fein president as a peacemaker.

:06:50. > :06:53.Supporters like these have been angered by his arrest, but despite

:06:54. > :06:58.that Martin McGuinness says there is no threat to the Northern Ireland

:06:59. > :07:00.peace process. Sinn Fein backing for the Police Service of Northern

:07:01. > :07:04.Ireland has been an important plank in the peace process. If that

:07:05. > :07:07.backing were to be withdrawn it would be a serious blow.

:07:08. > :07:12.Significantly perhaps, Martin McGuinness this afternoon has not

:07:13. > :07:16.threatened to withdraw the party's support. Gerry Adams has been

:07:17. > :07:18.questioned about the murder of Jean McConville in 1972. The police

:07:19. > :07:23.insist they have a duty to investigate serious crime

:07:24. > :07:27.impartially. Today, they got backing from Northern Ireland's Justice

:07:28. > :07:33.Minister. I have been Justice Minister for four years. I see no

:07:34. > :07:35.sign of political policing. What unfortunately I do see as

:07:36. > :07:41.politicians from both sides seeking to interfere in the policing

:07:42. > :07:44.process. Gerry Adams remains in custody Antrim Police Station. He

:07:45. > :07:50.has denied any involvement in Jean McConville's death.

:07:51. > :07:54.Hundreds of women clergy have gathered in London to mark 20 years

:07:55. > :07:58.since the ordination of women in the Church of England. Add a service

:07:59. > :08:00.that St Paul's Cathedral the Archbishop of Canterbury said the

:08:01. > :08:03.Church of England have made great progress since women were first

:08:04. > :08:10.ordained, but that it still had a long way to go.

:08:11. > :08:13.With all the sports News of the day so far, here is Katie Gornall at the

:08:14. > :08:17.BBC Sport Centre. It has been a day of drama at the

:08:18. > :08:22.bottom of the Premier League, both full amount Park card -- both Fulham

:08:23. > :08:26.hunt Cardiff have been relegated. Fulham's failed -- fate was sealed

:08:27. > :08:33.with a 4-1 defeat at Stoke, bringing to an end their 13 year stay in the

:08:34. > :08:37.top flight. They conceded three times in the second half. They will

:08:38. > :08:42.be joined in the Championship by Cardiff, who lost three - zero to

:08:43. > :08:46.Newcastle United. They were bottom of the table and dropped down after

:08:47. > :08:50.one season in the Premier League. We did not deserve to lose it, so the

:08:51. > :08:54.attitude and atmosphere in their off-course is now the disappointed,

:08:55. > :08:59.but they are fantastic bunch of players who have given everything

:09:00. > :09:03.for the cause and it was not good enough. Both of their relegation

:09:04. > :09:07.were confirmed when news of Sunderland's shock 1-0 win at

:09:08. > :09:11.Manchester United came through. Sebastian Larsson scored the only

:09:12. > :09:15.gale of the game at Old Trafford as Sunderland took a big step towards

:09:16. > :09:18.safety. Manchester City's chances of winning the Barclays Premier League

:09:19. > :09:22.are currently undergoing a test at Everton. A win would see City

:09:23. > :09:28.replace Liverpool at the top of the table, but they fell behind after

:09:29. > :09:33.this wonder goal from Ross Barkley. Sergio Aguero pulled a goal back for

:09:34. > :09:38.the visitors. Before Edin Dzeko sent City into the break with the lead.

:09:39. > :09:42.They are now into the second half at Goodison and the score is 3-1 to

:09:43. > :09:45.City. The Scottish Premiership, Celtic are still on course for a

:09:46. > :09:52.record tally of 100 points after they beat Aberdeen five - two. Hibs

:09:53. > :09:57.and Partick drew 1-1 and it was the same scoreline between Inverness

:09:58. > :10:03.Caley Thistle and Dundee United. In the World Snooker Championship,

:10:04. > :10:06.or Neil Robertson is tied at 12-12 with Mark Selby. The world than the

:10:07. > :10:11.one came from behind to level the match with Selby. They will resume

:10:12. > :10:14.at 7pm in Sheffield and Ronnie O'Sullivan awaits the winner in the

:10:15. > :10:19.final. That is all the sport for now.

:10:20. > :10:21.There is more throughout the evening on bids the BBC News channel.
