:00:00. > :00:08.Hopes of finding four missing British sailors fade after their

:00:09. > :00:13.capsized yacht is discovered in the Atlantic Ocean. The boat's life raft

:00:14. > :00:16.had not been deployed. The Prime Minister says his thoughts are with

:00:17. > :00:20.the families and friends of the crew.

:00:21. > :00:24.After significant UKIP gains in the local elections, both Labour and the

:00:25. > :00:28.Conservatives count the cost. And the Pope arrives in Jordan at

:00:29. > :00:53.the start of his first official trip to the Middle East.

:00:54. > :00:56.Good afternoon. Hopes of finding the four British sailors missing in the

:00:57. > :00:59.Atlantic have all but faded after the yacht's life raft was found on

:01:00. > :01:02.board the capsized vessel. The search has now been called off a

:01:03. > :01:06.week after contact was lost with the men. Prime Minister David Cameron

:01:07. > :01:18.said his thoughts were with the families and friends of the crew.

:01:19. > :01:23.Duncan Kennedy is in Southampton. Well Cheeki Rafiki should have

:01:24. > :01:27.arrived back in Southampton this weekend but early this morning came

:01:28. > :01:31.confirmation from the US Coast Guard that they had found the upturned

:01:32. > :01:37.hull and also crucially, the life raft. So for the families a week of

:01:38. > :01:47.anxiety has turned into a day of tragedy. The photographs but brought

:01:48. > :01:50.hope to an end. The turned Cheeki Rafiki and no sign of life. The

:01:51. > :01:55.queue has been sheared off making stability all but impossible. The

:01:56. > :02:01.Coast Guard also confirmed that the life raft was still on board. The

:02:02. > :02:06.search for Andrew Bridge, James Male, Paul Goslin and Steve Warren

:02:07. > :02:10.had spread over a week but has now been called off. The family of Steve

:02:11. > :02:14.Warren issued a statement this morning saying we are sad that the

:02:15. > :02:18.US has not suspended the search for Stephen and his friends. From the

:02:19. > :02:22.beginning we together with the other families involved had continued to

:02:23. > :02:26.hold out hope that he would be found alive. Many private yacht took part

:02:27. > :02:33.in the search and this morning those who helped to organise them spoke of

:02:34. > :02:36.a sense of loss. It is very personal to us we feel it is one of our

:02:37. > :02:41.family out in the water and I think that sailors feel that way

:02:42. > :02:45.worldwide. It is a situation where it could have been me and if it was

:02:46. > :02:50.me I would want everyone to be a parent looking. The Cheeki Rafiki

:02:51. > :02:55.had been returning from Antigua when it sent out distress calls. Today

:02:56. > :02:58.the battle of Mac charter company said this was a terrible moment for

:02:59. > :03:03.the families and friends of the crew of the yacht. We all share their

:03:04. > :03:08.sorrow after this tragedy. This is where it all went wrong. Photographs

:03:09. > :03:14.of the boat will now be studied by experts. The loss of the keel a

:03:15. > :03:19.focal point for any questions. The keel will have failed

:03:20. > :03:22.catastrophically, dropped off, and the boat would have capsized within

:03:23. > :03:27.seconds. They would have been no time to respond to that. It will now

:03:28. > :03:30.be down to the British Government to salvage the boat ahead of any

:03:31. > :03:34.enquiry but for the families of the men, the public expressions of hope

:03:35. > :03:41.now turn to the private pain of grief.

:03:42. > :03:43.George Osborne has said the Conservative Party will respond to

:03:44. > :03:48.voters' concerns which were expressed in the local elections

:03:49. > :03:51.across England. The Chancellor said he respected the UKIP leader Nigel

:03:52. > :03:55.Farage and the people who had voted for his party, but added they did

:03:56. > :03:59.not have the right answers for the country. Labour has also been

:04:00. > :04:02.defending its election performance. The party gained 338 seats, though

:04:03. > :04:06.it didn't capture several target councils in the North and the

:04:07. > :04:16.Midlands. The Conservatives lost 231 council seats. While the Lib Dems

:04:17. > :04:18.lost 307 seats. UKIP won 161 seats. Our Political Correspondent Alan

:04:19. > :04:27.Soady's report contains some flash photography.

:04:28. > :04:34.It is probably not the only points that Nigel Farage will be having

:04:35. > :04:37.this weekend. His party is still celebrating its strong performance

:04:38. > :04:43.in the local elections and insisting it was not just a one-off protest

:04:44. > :04:46.vote. But they are correct to the main parties when it comes to the

:04:47. > :04:51.general election. The Chancellor George Osborne admits his party

:04:52. > :04:55.needs to take the performance of UKIP seriously but he has rejected

:04:56. > :05:00.calls from a few Tory MPs to form an electoral pact with UKIP. They will

:05:01. > :05:04.not be packed because they want a Conservative government you have to

:05:05. > :05:07.vote Conservative and that is the message we have to make clear to

:05:08. > :05:11.people in the next year. There are only two people who can be by

:05:12. > :05:17.Minister after the next election, David Cameron or Ed Miliband and if

:05:18. > :05:21.you do not want Ed Miliband you have to vote Conservative. It is not just

:05:22. > :05:26.amongst conservatives whether our jitters over UKIP. The election

:05:27. > :05:30.results have seen the party picking up support in traditional Labour

:05:31. > :05:34.heartlands. Some senior Labour figures have said their party needs

:05:35. > :05:38.to talk about issues like immigration. The Labour leader Ed

:05:39. > :05:43.Miliband himself coming in for personal criticism from several of

:05:44. > :05:47.his own MPs. They claim he has failed to connect with the voters

:05:48. > :05:50.but allies have defended his performance. Just look at those

:05:51. > :05:55.results. We did win those local elections. We are on course to get

:05:56. > :06:01.the majority, if you look at results in those key marginal seats, that is

:06:02. > :06:06.something we have to continue to work at over the next 11 months and

:06:07. > :06:10.everyone will get behind Ed Miliband and continue to do that. The vote in

:06:11. > :06:13.the local elections have been counted but the results of the

:06:14. > :06:24.European elections will come tomorrow. There may be more -- more

:06:25. > :06:27.soul-searching to come. Reports are coming in of drive by

:06:28. > :06:30.shooting in the Californian city of Santa Barbara, in which at least

:06:31. > :06:32.seven people have died. It's understood it happened near the

:06:33. > :06:40.campus of the University of California at Santa Barbara and the

:06:41. > :06:42.gunman was amongst the dead. Fire crews who tackled yesterday's

:06:43. > :06:45.blaze at the world famous Glasgow School of Art say they have saved

:06:46. > :06:48.the building's structure and the majority of its contents. The

:06:49. > :06:51.building was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and it was feared

:06:52. > :06:55.initially that most of its works had been destroyed. Joining us from

:06:56. > :07:05.Glasgow is our Scotland Reporter Kevin Keane. Kevin, the damage not

:07:06. > :07:08.as bad as first feared? Indeed. Although from this position

:07:09. > :07:13.looking up the hill it does look quite badly damaged. All of the

:07:14. > :07:19.windows on the higher levels have been smashed. Part of the roof

:07:20. > :07:23.appears to have collapsed as well and is still smoke smouldering from

:07:24. > :07:29.higher up floors. But told 90% of the structure itself has been saved

:07:30. > :07:33.and 70% of the contents of the building has been saved as well. And

:07:34. > :07:37.much of that has been down to the hard work and efforts of the Fire

:07:38. > :07:41.Service crews who were here throughout the night trying to do

:07:42. > :07:46.their best. Understanding the historical importance of this

:07:47. > :07:49.building to the city. The Scotland culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop has

:07:50. > :07:54.been down this morning meeting some of the teams who have been involved

:07:55. > :07:58.and she says historic Scotland and the Scottish funding Council are

:07:59. > :08:02.engaging with the School of Art to talk about how it could be rebuilt

:08:03. > :08:05.in the future. In Thailand the crackdown following

:08:06. > :08:07.the military coup is continuing. The military government has ordered 35

:08:08. > :08:11.more people, including prominent academics, to report to them.

:08:12. > :08:15.Yesterday 150 politicians from both sides of the political divide were

:08:16. > :08:21.summoned. From Bangkok our correspondent Damian Grammaticus has

:08:22. > :08:29.sent this report. Face-to-face. High security and

:08:30. > :08:35.protesters. Increasingly bold. Starting to confront the Army.

:08:36. > :08:43.Opposition to the coup beginning to show. The army here in Thailand said

:08:44. > :08:46.that any gathering of more than five people is illegal for this March in

:08:47. > :08:59.Bangkok today is a direct challenge to the military. The coup leader has

:09:00. > :09:04.shouted obscenities. The police said they were waiting for orders from

:09:05. > :09:15.the military, who seemed unsure how to respond. What do you want to

:09:16. > :09:19.happen now? But Thailand's new military dictatorship as detained

:09:20. > :09:25.political leaders, shut down media and imposed a curfew. It is trying

:09:26. > :09:33.to stifle opposition. It is a risky path at its my -- as it might simply

:09:34. > :09:37.deepen divisions in Thailand. Pope Francis has arrived in Jordan

:09:38. > :09:40.at the start of a three-day visit to the Middle East which will also take

:09:41. > :09:43.in the West Bank and Israel. He was greeted at the airport by political

:09:44. > :09:46.and religious dignitaries, before being driven to meet King Abdullah

:09:47. > :09:50.and Queen Rania. Later he'll celebrate mass at Jordan's

:09:51. > :09:54.international stadium. We can speak to Quentin Somerville in Jordan now.

:09:55. > :10:02.Quentin, what's the purpose of the visit? Well it is about to get very

:10:03. > :10:07.loud here at this stadium because the Pope is just about to enter the

:10:08. > :10:14.stadium. After he celebrated Mass here with 50,000 of the faithful, he

:10:15. > :10:19.will then go and meet Syrian refugees. Many Christians have been

:10:20. > :10:23.affected by that conflict. Some half a million have fled. He has called

:10:24. > :10:28.ready for an end to that conflict as he arrived here to begin this

:10:29. > :10:32.three-day tour. Much of the focus will be on his next stop. He will

:10:33. > :10:37.visit the occupied territories and Israel. The Vatican support the

:10:38. > :10:41.creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. Those peace talks

:10:42. > :10:46.aimed at achieving that of course recently collapsed. This is a

:10:47. > :10:53.plain-spoken and direct talking Pope and he is bound to have something to

:10:54. > :11:04.say about Middle East peace. That is all for now. We are back at 20 to

:11:05. > :11:12.seven. Good afternoon. It has been a hugely

:11:13. > :11:13.appropriate sphere for a good part of England and Wales this morning.

:11:14. > :11:15.Some
