:00:00. > :00:12.Iran offers to help Iraq and the United States in the battle against

:00:13. > :00:17.Sunni extremists. Iraq says the fightback has already begun as the

:00:18. > :00:22.United States orders an aircraft carrier and two warships in the

:00:23. > :00:26.Gulf. Ukraine's president vows to punish pro-Russian separatists who

:00:27. > :00:28.shot down a military plane, killing 49 people.

:00:29. > :00:31.England arrive for their opening World Cup game with Italy. We'll be

:00:32. > :00:55.live from Manaus. Good evening. Iran says it's willing

:00:56. > :00:59.to co-operate with the United States and to help the Iraqi government in

:01:00. > :01:03.its battle against Sunni extremists. President Hassan Rohani suggested he

:01:04. > :01:07.would be willing to work with Iran's traditional enemy to prevent ISIS

:01:08. > :01:11.militants from taking over Iraq. This evening the Pentagon ordered an

:01:12. > :01:15.aircraft carrier and two warships into the Gulf in case Washington

:01:16. > :01:19.decides to pursue military options. Fighters from ISIS have taken

:01:20. > :01:23.control of large parts of the north and west - including the cities of

:01:24. > :01:27.Mosul and Tikrit, but the Iraqi Prime Minister today

:01:28. > :01:28.said the fightback had already begun. From Irbil, our Correspondent

:01:29. > :01:38.Paul Wood reports. Iraqi helicopter gun ships hitting

:01:39. > :01:43.militant targets. Iraq's government is determined to reverse the

:01:44. > :01:53.humiliations of recent days. It says the fightback against ISIS has

:01:54. > :02:05.begun. Young men are rushing to join up. These are Shi'ites in Basra.

:02:06. > :02:10.Send us to fight, they chant. New recruits will arrive to help the

:02:11. > :02:14.security forces within hours, says the Prime Minister. This is the

:02:15. > :02:23.beginning of the end of ISIS, he says, we'll take back every inch

:02:24. > :02:30.defaced by those traitors. And Iran has said it may help. The president

:02:31. > :02:35.said his country even stood ready to cooperate with the old enemy, the

:02:36. > :02:40.United States. An American aircraft carrier is coming, in case

:02:41. > :02:46.Washington decides on military action. Fears of a wider war or

:02:47. > :02:54.fears of ISIS have driven a million people from their homes in Iraq,

:02:55. > :02:58.according to the UN. We're seeing a very serious threat to the

:02:59. > :03:03.sovereignty and integrity of this country. That threat needs to be

:03:04. > :03:08.dealt with. It cannot be dealt with only militarily, but it cannot be

:03:09. > :03:11.dealt with only politically because your opponent is a very determined

:03:12. > :03:16.organisation, group of people, who seek to destroy the state. All of

:03:17. > :03:22.the international efforts now are centred on putting pressure on the

:03:23. > :03:26.Shi'ite-led government in Baghdad to get it to a government of national

:03:27. > :03:30.unity, that, it's hoped, will take some of the force out of what is

:03:31. > :03:35.largely a Sunni tribal uprising. But ISIS would not be part of any deal.

:03:36. > :03:42.Here, the jihadis celebrate their latest gains. They will fight on.

:03:43. > :03:48.Iraq may need help from both Iran and the United States to stop them.

:03:49. > :03:51.Paul Wood reports. And Tony Blair will be discussing

:03:52. > :03:53.the crisis in Iraq on the Andrew Marr show on BBC One from 9am

:03:54. > :03:59.tomorrow morning. The Ukrainian government is vowing

:04:00. > :04:02.to retaliate, after a military transport plane was shot down by

:04:03. > :04:07.pro-Russian separatists, killing 49 people. The plane, which was

:04:08. > :04:11.carrying troops and equipment, was about to land at Luhansk airport. It

:04:12. > :04:15.is thought to be the biggest single loss of life suffered by government

:04:16. > :04:16.forces since the start of the conflict in east Ukraine. Daniel

:04:17. > :04:27.Sandford reports. The wreckage of the Ukrainian

:04:28. > :04:33.military transport plane knocked out of the sky at a government-held

:04:34. > :04:37.airfield in Luhansk this morning. None of the nine crew or 40 soldiers

:04:38. > :04:42.it was carrying survived. The Ukrainian dope fence ministry said

:04:43. > :04:47.it was destroyed by -- Defence Ministry said it was destroyed by

:04:48. > :04:50.terrorists. Armed men pouring over the remains, who want to break away

:04:51. > :04:54.and join Russia. It was easily the worst loss of life by Ukrainian

:04:55. > :04:59.forces in this conflict. The moment the plane was hit by the rebels was

:05:00. > :05:07.caught on a security camera. It then burst into flames and crashed to the

:05:08. > :05:11.ground. Tonight, furious young men were destroying cars and windows at

:05:12. > :05:17.the Russian embassy in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev. They have little

:05:18. > :05:21.doubt as to whom they blame for the deaths. It's an explosion of anger

:05:22. > :05:26.after weeks of frustration at what many people here in Kiev feel has

:05:27. > :05:31.been an invasion by Russia. There was shock this week, when three

:05:32. > :05:36.battle tanks turned up near Donetsk, clearly in the hands of the rebels.

:05:37. > :05:40.The United States said they'd been driven across the bored frer Russia.

:05:41. > :05:44.NATO backed this up today with satellite images, apparently showing

:05:45. > :05:49.the same tanks earlier that day still in Russia. The US Secretary of

:05:50. > :05:56.State, John Kerry, warned that the West would punish Moscow further if

:05:57. > :06:01.it failed to end the flow of weapons across the border. There was a rare

:06:02. > :06:05.success for the Ukrainian government yesterday, when loyal irregular

:06:06. > :06:10.forces took control back of the last rebel-held buildings in the port

:06:11. > :06:15.city of Mariupol, but every building is having to be fought for and the

:06:16. > :06:20.increasingly well armed, pro-Russia forces still control several large

:06:21. > :06:21.cities. Today, they even fought back in Mariupol, killing five border

:06:22. > :06:28.guards. Polls have closed in Afghanistan's

:06:29. > :06:32.run-off elections for a new president. Voters are choosing

:06:33. > :06:35.between a former foreign minister, Abdullah Abdullah, and Ashraf Ghani,

:06:36. > :06:39.the ex-finance minister. Both candidates have pledged to improve

:06:40. > :06:40.ties with the west and to fight corruption. Preliminary results are

:06:41. > :06:49.expected to be announced next month. The Chief Inspector of Prisons has

:06:50. > :06:52.warned that jails in England and Wales are so overcrowded there's a

:06:53. > :06:57.risk to prisoners and the public. Nick Hardwick accused ministers of a

:06:58. > :07:00."political and policy failure". It comes after the government told

:07:01. > :07:04.40 prisons to find space for hundreds of extra inmates, in case

:07:05. > :07:05.of need over the summer. Our Political Correspondent Gary

:07:06. > :07:15.O'Donoghue has the details. The prisons in England and Wales are

:07:16. > :07:19.close to bursting point, with just a thousand places available. Now the

:07:20. > :07:24.Chief Inspector of Prisons says the strain on capacity and staff could

:07:25. > :07:30.lead it a long, hot summer of unrest. There are not, simply

:07:31. > :07:34.not-and-a-half staff on the wings supervising prisoners and not enough

:07:35. > :07:38.managers superprizing staff. As a consequence, you're seeing a

:07:39. > :07:41.critical situation in some At the prisons. Moment there are around

:07:42. > :07:46.85,500 people in praise anyone England and Wales. The compass --

:07:47. > :07:50.prisons in England and Wales. The capacity of all prisons is around

:07:51. > :07:55.86,500. That's why ministers have asked 40 jails to make a further 440

:07:56. > :07:59.places available. The problem with asking prisons to take more inmates

:08:00. > :08:03.is that already two thirds are overcrowded. Wandsworth here has

:08:04. > :08:07.almost 600 more inmates than it should. Ministers say they are

:08:08. > :08:14.creating 2,000 more long-term places by April next year and they insist

:08:15. > :08:17.there's not a crisis. Ten years ago, When the last Government went

:08:18. > :08:22.through this and they had to let prisoners out 18 days earlier to

:08:23. > :08:26.cope with the pressures. I'm not doing that. We will make

:08:27. > :08:30.preparations for a few hundred extra prisoners to share a cell for a few

:08:31. > :08:34.weeks until the new capacity opens. I don't think that's a big Private

:08:35. > :08:38.prisons problem. Are being asked to fit in another 600 inmates. They're

:08:39. > :08:42.even more overcrowded than those under direct public control.

:08:43. > :08:45.O'Donoghue has the details. With all the sport, here's

:08:46. > :08:48.Olly Foster who is at the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.

:08:49. > :08:55.Three days into this World Cup, England finally get their tournament

:08:56. > :08:59.started. There are over -- they're over 1700 miles away from here in

:09:00. > :09:04.the heart of the Amazon. Around 3,000 England fans have made the

:09:05. > :09:10.journey for the match against Italy. Dan Roan reports from Manaus.

:09:11. > :09:16.It's an away fixture like no other. Match day morning in Manaus and

:09:17. > :09:19.England's intrepid fans take a walk along the Amazon. Few are expecting

:09:20. > :09:23.a stroll for their team against Italy here in the heat and humidity,

:09:24. > :09:27.but they're determined to enjoy their jungle adventure It's pretty

:09:28. > :09:31.amazing out here. For us, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to

:09:32. > :09:36.not just get to the World Cup, but get out to the Amazon. It's a crazy

:09:37. > :09:42.place. It's ridiculously hot at the moment. Both teams will struggle in

:09:43. > :09:46.it. It could be a 0-0 draw today. 0-0, he'll bring the youngsters on

:09:47. > :09:50.in the last 20 minutes and I think they'll score three. England got a

:09:51. > :09:54.first look at the stadium here last night and must now hope weeks of

:09:55. > :09:58.training have prepared them for the extreme conditions they'll face here

:09:59. > :10:02.in the rainforest. What I do know is that we've moved on. We've grown.

:10:03. > :10:06.We've improved. We've been together a lot longer. We've had two years to

:10:07. > :10:11.get used to what this manager wants. I think it's sunk in really well.

:10:12. > :10:15.England kept out of the sun today, confined to their hotel. But now

:10:16. > :10:19.comes a defining moment for the team and manager. It's a massive

:10:20. > :10:24.barometer of how far this team has come. I think since he took the job

:10:25. > :10:27.for the euros, two years ago, I think he's evolved the team. He's

:10:28. > :10:35.brought in young players. This is the biggest test that this group of

:10:36. > :10:38.players have got. This maybe unchated territory for England,

:10:39. > :10:43.despite the remoteness of the location, support, as ever, is no

:10:44. > :10:46.problem. In the last hour, the squad arrived here. They and their fans

:10:47. > :10:51.have had to come a long way and the heat is about to be turned up on a

:10:52. > :10:56.team with plenty to prove. We can speak to Dan now in Manaus.

:10:57. > :11:02.Not long to go, Dan, Roy Hodgson has made a very bold choice in his

:11:03. > :11:05.starting 11. He has. We assumed England would be happy with a draw

:11:06. > :11:12.against Italy tonight. It looks like they're going for the win. They've

:11:13. > :11:17.selected Raheem Sterling. It's a choice that will delight the many,

:11:18. > :11:22.who wanted to see more positivity from this side. He's forced his way

:11:23. > :11:25.into Roy Hodgson's team. Such has been his form for Liverpool this

:11:26. > :11:30.season. The manager will hope that he can get at what is an ageing

:11:31. > :11:34.Italian side, who, by the way, already without their goalkeeper and

:11:35. > :11:39.captain. Ever since the draw was made there's been trepidation

:11:40. > :11:45.surrounding this game, this young, untested squad at this level, can

:11:46. > :11:49.they hand the the pressure -- handle the pressure, can they deal with the

:11:50. > :11:56.heat? Well, very shortly, we'll find out. Dan Roan in Manaus. Many thanks

:11:57. > :12:00.indeed. We've had two matches today. Colombia beat Greece 3-0 in Group C.

:12:01. > :12:04.We have had a major shock in England's group. Uruguay were beaten

:12:05. > :12:09.by kofta reekament they led at halftime, but the Costa Ricans who

:12:10. > :12:18.were expected to be the group whipping boys hit back to win 3-1.

:12:19. > :12:22.Let's move away from the World Cup for now. It's been a big day of

:12:23. > :12:25.international Rugby Union. Wales were outclassed by South Africa.

:12:26. > :12:29.Ireland won their Test series in Argentinament Scotland beat Canada,

:12:30. > :12:33.but England lost the series against New Zealand, after a nail-biting

:12:34. > :12:41.defeat. The All Blacks winning the second Test there 28-27.

:12:42. > :12:44.Both stood by the return of their biggest stars and the promise of

:12:45. > :12:48.last week's performance, England knew they needed to win this Test to

:12:49. > :12:56.keep the series alive. They started with intent and intensity.

:12:57. > :13:03.England dived over seven minutes in. England had more chances in a

:13:04. > :13:07.breathless first half. The second half, though, belonged to the All

:13:08. > :13:15.Blacks. Ben Smith ran it home just three minutes after the restart and

:13:16. > :13:20.a try from Julian Surveyor tightened the screw. Owen Farrell was

:13:21. > :13:26.sin-binned, perhaps harshly and they danced through the stretched England

:13:27. > :13:30.defence. With Farrell back on the pitch, Mike Brown went over for

:13:31. > :13:35.England. The trade mark celebration lacked its usual gusto. They

:13:36. > :13:40.finished a point behind, another reminder to England, why the All

:13:41. > :13:44.Blacks are the best in the world. It wasn't so close in Durban, where

:13:45. > :13:54.Wales were beaten 38-16 by South Africa. They were outrun and out

:13:55. > :13:59.witted. There were five tries for the home side. It ended more

:14:00. > :14:02.positively for the visitors, though. The Springboks falling in Alex

:14:03. > :14:10.Cuthbert's wake. Cricket now and England have the

:14:11. > :14:15.edge at Lord's in the first Test. Sri Lanka closed on 415-7, 160 runs

:14:16. > :14:20.behind England's first innings total, but the third day belonged to

:14:21. > :14:26.Kumar Sangakkara, who achieved a personal milestone.

:14:27. > :14:32.No-one expected rain on Saturday morning at Lord's. Moments of

:14:33. > :14:36.surprise came through the day. Sri Lanka's three and four are numbers

:14:37. > :14:43.six and eight in the all-time list of Test run scorers. Kumar

:14:44. > :14:50.Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. It's 14 years since Kumar

:14:51. > :14:54.Sangakkara's debut. Now he finally achieved an ambition, his first Test

:14:55. > :15:01.century at Lord's. The next wicket seemed a mile away until Broad got

:15:02. > :15:09.Mahela Jayawardene LBW. England sensed an opener. Another wicket

:15:10. > :15:12.followed quickly. 289-4. Getting rid of Sangakkara was another matter.

:15:13. > :15:21.It's a task which has puzzled a great many bowlers over the years.

:15:22. > :15:25.England's attack is very new. Ali dismissed Sangakkara for 147, quite

:15:26. > :15:29.a first wicket in Test cricket. Late joy followed in the early evening

:15:30. > :15:35.sun, all England's wickets were hard won.

:15:36. > :15:39.That's almost it from here. Let me just quickly show you what's

:15:40. > :15:43.happening down on the beach. What you're seeing down there is an

:15:44. > :15:46.enormous fan zone, thousands waiting for the start this afternoon

:15:47. > :15:50.England-Italy match on the big screen. That's one place to watch

:15:51. > :15:56.it. Another is on BBC One, straight after the news. From here in Rio de

:15:57. > :16:00.Janeiro, that's all your sport. You can see more on all of today's

:16:01. > :16:02.stories on the BBC News channel. That's all from me though, good

:16:03. > :16:16.night. Good evening. Pressure is not only

:16:17. > :16:20.building pitchside, but weather-wise in the UK, high pressure dominates

:16:21. > :16:24.the charts through the week ahead, meaning a lot of dry and settled

:16:25. > :16:27.weather to come. There's sunshine at times, allowing it to feel warm out

:16:28. > :16:28.there. The odd shower can't be ruled
