:00:21. > :00:52.hello. one of britain's most senior police officers has warned the

:00:53. > :01:00.conflict in syria represents a long-term terrorist threat to the

:01:01. > :01:01.uk. full is the british jihadists in syria, with the most violent and

:01:02. > :01:47.blood 30 of all the insurgent groups in the middle east. but who are

:01:48. > :01:56.these young men? i am afraid i believe that we will be living with

:01:57. > :01:58.the consequences of syria, from a terrorist point of view, let alone

:01:59. > :01:59.from a world, geopolitical consequences, for many, many, many

:02:00. > :02:01.years to come. the sunni jihadists of ices have been fighting in syria

:02:02. > :02:03.for some time, but this month they have stormed through northern iraq,

:02:04. > :02:07.taking town after town, imposing draconian rules and executing

:02:08. > :02:14.prisoners in cold blood. the iraqi army has put up little or no

:02:15. > :02:19.resistance. so now, iraq's powerful shia militias are rallying to defend

:02:20. > :02:24.their holy sites. they will be a match for the fanatics of isis, but

:02:25. > :02:37.it risks turning into a sectarian war, sunni versus shia. meanwhile,

:02:38. > :02:40.isis and its followers have been using social media to broadcast

:02:41. > :02:57.their messages. it is causing some community leaders to worry about the

:02:58. > :03:07.effect on young people. this is a change in the attitude of the

:03:08. > :03:45.community. for us, it is as important as it is for anybody else

:03:46. > :03:59.to be careful, to be vigilant, and to make sure that these people are

:04:00. > :04:09.targeted and taken care of. but there is no denying the potential

:04:10. > :04:16.charisma of propaganda videos like this. officials fear it will

:04:17. > :04:22.generate yet more jihadist recruits to one of the most violent conflicts

:04:23. > :04:27.in the world. jihadists have already started to return here in their

:04:28. > :04:33.hundreds. right now, it is more an expectation that in the future, it

:04:34. > :04:45.is something which is going to happen. a proportion of those

:04:46. > :05:05.returning from jihad to become domestic terrorists, as it is

:05:06. > :05:17.labelled. the focus of ices at the moment is entirely on the middle

:05:18. > :05:20.east. they are fighting in syria and primarily, they are fighting the

:05:21. > :05:30.iraqi army, or what is left of it, in iraq. the expectation is that not

:05:31. > :05:34.only will some comeback, but even before that, 250 have already

:05:35. > :05:37.returned here, brutalised by what they have seen, and brutally

:05:38. > :05:40.anti-western. so there is a slight danger of it becoming a

:05:41. > :05:44.self-fulfilling prophecy. there may be things which you and i do not

:05:45. > :05:46.know about, which are intercepted on the internet by gchq, for example.

:05:47. > :05:48.there may be things in the pipeline. but it is more an expectation of

:05:49. > :05:49.what is to come down the line. the iraqi government has suffered a

:05:50. > :05:51.setback in its battle against sunni militants with claims that three

:05:52. > :05:52.towns have been captured by ices militants in the last 48 hours.

:05:53. > :05:54.meanwhile, video has been released of what the iraqi government says

:05:55. > :05:56.are strikes against ices hideouts in mosul. joining us from baghdad is

:05:57. > :06:06.our world affairs correspondent jonathan beale. bring us up to date

:06:07. > :06:10.with the latest. just before john kerry arrives, the

:06:11. > :06:15.iranian president has warned america not to intervene. there is

:06:16. > :06:23.speculation, there had been speculation that those two rivals

:06:24. > :06:35.would join together on this one, but that seems far away at the moment.

:06:36. > :06:39.the former defence secretary liam fox has spoken this morning on the

:06:40. > :06:47.bbc about europe. david cameron wants to force a vote on the issue

:06:48. > :06:50.of the new presidency this week. david cameron is fighting for the uk

:06:51. > :06:54.to get some powers back from brussels. be negotiating the terms

:06:55. > :07:02.is crucial to his plan for a referendum. this is the man he

:07:03. > :07:05.thinks could stand in the way of that, jean-claude juncker, the front

:07:06. > :07:10.runner to be the next president of the eu commissioner. he is the

:07:11. > :07:12.choice of the biggest group in the european parliament, the european

:07:13. > :07:18.people's party, a group which the conservatives decided not to be part

:07:19. > :07:21.of. if the tories were part of that

:07:22. > :07:25.party, he could have made that argument at the dublin summit, and

:07:26. > :07:38.he may well have prevailed. the German canceller to a -- to side

:07:39. > :07:43.with him but she and a growing number of leaders are backing the

:07:44. > :07:47.former Luxembourg Prime Minister -- Chancellor. Sceptics still think

:07:48. > :07:55.their leader has taken the right steps. A Jean-Claude Juncker agenda

:07:56. > :08:00.is wrong for the people of Europe so the British Prime Minister is right

:08:01. > :08:04.to stand up against it. He may not win but it is better to seek a Prime

:08:05. > :08:08.Minister fight it at all and not fight at all because not to fight

:08:09. > :08:14.gets as close up on the juggernaut to a union. It has not been plain

:08:15. > :08:18.sailing for David Cameron, despite his efforts, very few EU leaders

:08:19. > :08:22.have come out against Jean-Claude Juncker and the Prime Minister's

:08:23. > :08:27.chances of stopping him sinking fast.

:08:28. > :08:31.If final attempt could be to get the decision delayed, he will hope the

:08:32. > :08:36.President of the European Council might be able to help with that when

:08:37. > :08:38.they meet tomorrow -- a final. If the Prime Minister does push it to a

:08:39. > :08:40.they meet tomorrow -- a final. If the Prime Minister does push vote

:08:41. > :08:45.later in the week, he will almost certainly lose.

:08:46. > :08:51.Former Wimbledon champion Virginia Wade has questioned Andy Murray's

:08:52. > :08:53.choice of college. He will begin his defence of his Wimbledon crown

:08:54. > :08:56.choice of college. He will begin his defence of his Wimbledon this week

:08:57. > :09:04.and she said he was fooling around when he announced the appointment of

:09:05. > :09:06.former women's number one Amelie Mauresmo who she described as

:09:07. > :09:12.fragile mentally. Day 11 of the World Cup and the

:09:13. > :09:16.final set second-round group matches could see the hopes of Cristiano

:09:17. > :09:20.Ronaldo and Portugal shattered. They were beaten by Germany and if they

:09:21. > :09:26.lose to the USA, they will go out. Later, it England will hold another

:09:27. > :09:30.news conference. Our reporter is in Rio, the first time the England

:09:31. > :09:35.manager will face the press since England were out of the competition,

:09:36. > :09:43.will he get a rough ride? He may well do. England's players

:09:44. > :09:45.are training today in Rio de Janeiro ahead of their game against Costa

:09:46. > :09:50.Rica on Tuesday which is meaningless. They are already out of

:09:51. > :09:56.the tournament. Interesting to see from Roy Hodgson what approach he

:09:57. > :10:02.will have, will he play younger players like Luke Shaw and how does

:10:03. > :10:05.he see England's failure? Also speaking will be England captain

:10:06. > :10:13.Steven Gerrard, is he about to retire from his national team or

:10:14. > :10:17.will he take longer to consult with Liverpool and his family? We will

:10:18. > :10:20.wait and see. Tributes have been paid to the

:10:21. > :10:25.actress Patsy Byrne who became well-known for playing Mercy in the

:10:26. > :10:39.second series of Blackadder. She has died at the age of eight T. -- 80.

:10:40. > :11:03.The next news is later, that is it. More warm sunshine today. We are

:11:04. > :11:08.going to see changes through the week ahead. Gradual changes. The

:11:09. > :11:13.first half will the warm sunshine and by the end of the week, it looks

:11:14. > :11:18.wet. Thanks to an area of low pressure which is a long way away

:11:19. > :11:20.and is slowly moving towards the UK. Pressure
