:00:07. > :00:09.More criticism for David Cameron over his failed attempt to block

:00:10. > :00:11.Jean-Claude Juncker's appointment as EU Commission President.

:00:12. > :00:13.The SNP leader Alex Salmond says the Prime Minister has lost control

:00:14. > :00:41.Pro-Russian militants carry out more attacks in Ukraine. Serena Williams

:00:42. > :00:44.crashes out in the third round of Wimbledon. Brazil are through to the

:00:45. > :00:56.last 16 after a dramatic penalty shoot out. And soul singer, Bobby

:00:57. > :01:14.will-mac -- Bobby Womack has died aged 70.

:01:15. > :01:22.Good evening. The SNP leader, Alex Salmond has said David Cameron is no

:01:23. > :01:32.longer in control over events in Europe and his failure to stop Jean

:01:33. > :01:37.Claude Junker from becoming commission president has

:01:38. > :01:43.strengthened the case for Scottish independence. But the Prime Minister

:01:44. > :01:45.said Scotland was getting the best of both worlds within the UK. They

:01:46. > :01:48.were attending Armed Forces Day to mark the contribution of service men

:01:49. > :01:56.and women, past and present. The parade began under sunny skies with

:01:57. > :01:58.little hint of the storms to come. Members of all three services

:01:59. > :02:05.marched down hill from Stirling Castle, a place often fought over by

:02:06. > :02:09.the English and Scottish. That echo battles past and still to come was

:02:10. > :02:15.evident in the brief handshake between David Cameron and Alex

:02:16. > :02:36.Salmond. The salute was taken by the Princess Royal.

:02:37. > :02:38.Some consolation perhaps for a Prime Minister fresh from his defeat

:02:39. > :02:40.by other EU leaders over the next European Commission president.

:02:41. > :02:42.Although today, he brushed off his battle scars

:02:43. > :02:46.and focused on his next fight on a different front, over Scotland,

:02:47. > :02:51.There is a bigger message I think this year because we can consider

:02:52. > :02:53.what Scotland bring to the United Kingdom's Armed Forces

:02:54. > :02:56.and what being part of a bigger entity brings for Scotland as well.

:02:57. > :03:00.Not a message Mr Salmond is heeding as he criticised David Cameron's

:03:01. > :03:03.Today, he insisted voting for an independent Scotland would

:03:04. > :03:06.enable the country to stay in Europe, even if what remained

:03:07. > :03:11.He's on the run from his party and his party are on the run from UKIP.

:03:12. > :03:15.And the biggest danger to Scotland as a European nation would be

:03:16. > :03:18.if we allow ourselves to be dictated by Westminster politics.

:03:19. > :03:22.I think it reinforces the argument that we take matters

:03:23. > :03:29.Away from the politics, thousands gathered here simply to

:03:30. > :03:43.celebrate the Armed Forces and enjoy a day out with the family.

:03:44. > :03:45.Here in Stirling, Beating Retreat marks the beginning of the end

:03:46. > :03:51.The spirits of those here only slightly dampened by the downpours.

:03:52. > :03:54.But like the rain, politics were never far away with this Armed

:03:55. > :03:57.Forces Day in Scotland, used by both sides to stress either what people

:03:58. > :03:59.have to gain or people have to lose when they vote this September.

:04:00. > :04:13.We can now join our correspondent, Chris Mason.

:04:14. > :04:22.David Cameron did get some words of comfort from Europe today? There was

:04:23. > :04:27.an olive branch from a man who had voted for Jean Claude Junker. The

:04:28. > :04:32.Prime Minister of Sweden said he would be willing to walk the extra

:04:33. > :04:35.mile to try and help the UK in its negotiations with the EU. The Health

:04:36. > :04:41.Secretary, Jeremy Helan is pretty much snapped that RH -- olive branch

:04:42. > :04:51.in half. Said they were cowards because they voted for Jean Claude

:04:52. > :04:55.Junker in public but criticised him in private. This isn't like the

:04:56. > :04:58.World Cup, it isn't like losing on penalties in the group stages and

:04:59. > :05:03.having to pack your bags and go home. A long slog of negotiation

:05:04. > :05:13.continues. The criticism continues. Ed Miliband is writing in the Sunday

:05:14. > :05:16.Times tomorrow and he says, this shows a Conservative government

:05:17. > :05:19.would put a threat British business and Britain's future. As for Nigel

:05:20. > :05:25.Farage, the UKIP leader, he said in the Sun newspaper, he is a bit like

:05:26. > :05:30.dad 's Army and a stupid boy. The last couple of days has emphasised

:05:31. > :05:34.the long slog of negotiation with the EU is just that. Thank you very

:05:35. > :05:38.much. Russia has said the United States is to blame for the continued

:05:39. > :05:42.fighting in eastern Ukraine. It made clear its anger at the free trade

:05:43. > :05:50.deal between the Ukraine and the European Union. There has been more

:05:51. > :05:56.fighting between European forces and separatists despite a cease-fire.

:05:57. > :06:00.It was Constitution Day in Ukraine. And Petro Poroshenko was home at the

:06:01. > :06:12.securing an historic agreement with muscles. Yesterday, Petro Poroshenko

:06:13. > :06:15.and the leaders of Georgia and Moldova signed free-trade deals with

:06:16. > :06:20.the EU. For their countries it is a major step toward Europe and away

:06:21. > :06:25.from Moscow's influence. Russia has threatened a response, the EU has

:06:26. > :06:29.threatened Russia with tougher sanctions as early as next week it

:06:30. > :06:34.the Kremlin does not act to de-escalate the conflict in eastern

:06:35. > :06:41.Ukraine. There is little sign of de-escalation on the ground. In

:06:42. > :06:46.eastern Ukraine, the cease-fire which Petro Poroshenko has extended

:06:47. > :06:49.until Monday has been shaky to say the least. After a four hour battle

:06:50. > :06:54.this week, these pro-Russia fighters stormed a Ukrainian military base.

:06:55. > :06:59.They were quick to remove the symbols of Ukrainian statehood. Kiev

:07:00. > :07:07.has told the rebels to lay down their arms. This has been their

:07:08. > :07:15.response. Gori to Russia, he shouts. Today a former Ukrainian president

:07:16. > :07:21.said the separatist leaders were all representatives of Russia. Moscow

:07:22. > :07:24.takes a different view. TRANSLATION: there are also our American

:07:25. > :07:27.colleagues, who judging by the evidence still preferred to push the

:07:28. > :07:33.Ukrainian leadership towards confrontation. But the Ukrainian

:07:34. > :07:38.authorities and Western governments accuse Moscow of funding, equipping

:07:39. > :07:41.and backing the pro-Russian militants and they are demanding

:07:42. > :07:47.Russia end its support for the separatists.

:07:48. > :07:49.The Iraqi army has launched an offensive to retake

:07:50. > :07:52.the northern city of Tikrit, which was overrun by Sunni militants

:07:53. > :07:56.Helicopter gunships have been attacking targets on the ground

:07:57. > :08:00.and it's said that thousands of troops are advancing on the city.

:08:01. > :08:03.The funeral of Gerry Conlon, one of four people wrongly convicted

:08:04. > :08:07.of the IRA Guildford pub bombing in 1974, has taken place in Belfast.

:08:08. > :08:11.His coffin was carried into St Peter's Cathedral in West Belfast

:08:12. > :08:15.by three members of the Birmingham Six, who were also

:08:16. > :08:19.The lawyer, Gareth Pierce, who represented the Guildford Four

:08:20. > :08:25.The Irish deputy Prime Minister, Eamon Gilmore,

:08:26. > :08:33.The American soul singer and songwriter Bobby Womack has died

:08:34. > :08:38.Womack's career spanned more than 50 years, with hits including ?It's All

:08:39. > :08:44.One of his last UK performances was at Glastonbury

:08:45. > :08:48.Our Entertainment Correspondent Lizo Mzimba is at the festival in

:08:49. > :09:05.His hits included 'Across 110th Street'

:09:06. > :09:08.and the Rolling Stones cover of his song, 'It's All Over Now', which

:09:09. > :09:12.# Well, my baby you stay out all night long #

:09:13. > :09:26.Thousands of all ages turned out to see and hear Bobby Womack.

:09:27. > :09:30.12 months on, fans have been remembering that performance here.

:09:31. > :09:32.You saw Bobby Womack perform here last year, what was he like?

:09:33. > :09:34.He was very iconic. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

:09:35. > :09:37.We love that era of music and he represented that era superbly.

:09:38. > :09:48.Soul singer, Kelis, just one of the artists at this year's

:09:49. > :09:52.You saw him through all of his music.

:09:53. > :09:55.You saw all of the transitions and all the things he went through

:09:56. > :10:16.He struggled with drug addiction and cancer in later life. He will be

:10:17. > :10:19.remembered as an artist who helped shape music with both his writing

:10:20. > :10:40.and his voice. Time for the sport now. What a day

:10:41. > :10:48.it has been. Brazil coming through a penalty shoot out to go through to

:10:49. > :10:57.the last 16. It was a draw at full-time. Our correspondent watch

:10:58. > :11:02.the match in a favela in Rio. Rich and poor, big and small. Full ball

:11:03. > :11:12.is an all-consuming passion here and this was the biggest day of the

:11:13. > :11:16.World Cup so far. Here within sight of the stadium, everyone has dreams,

:11:17. > :11:22.a better life, good education and a steady job. But today Brazil was

:11:23. > :11:26.united in pursuit of one goal. Guided by Neymar, Brazilians had

:11:27. > :11:31.dissuaded themselves getting past Chile was a formality. It started to

:11:32. > :11:35.look that way when Davitt Lewis scored after 17 minutes. -- David

:11:36. > :11:43.Luiz. Less than ten minutes later Chile were level through Sanchez.

:11:44. > :11:47.This Brazilian side is not invincible and Chile's resilience

:11:48. > :11:54.was fraying nerves across the country. As the game got tighter in

:11:55. > :12:01.the second half, chief villain was Howard Webb. The referee ruled out a

:12:02. > :12:07.help goal for handball. Only the crossbar prevented Chile plunging an

:12:08. > :12:12.entire nation into despair as the agony of a penalty shoot out loomed.

:12:13. > :12:19.Prayers and Dutch courage on this Brazilian roof terrace paid

:12:20. > :12:25.dividends as first Neymar scored... And then Chile missed their last

:12:26. > :12:31.spot kicks sending Chile out and Brazil through, knowing they had

:12:32. > :12:39.escaped either skin of their teeth and the thickness of the goalposts.

:12:40. > :12:47.The overwhelming feeling is relief, but if Brazil are to reach the final

:12:48. > :12:49.in Rio, they will have to play better against much sterner

:12:50. > :12:53.opposition. Celebrations and street parties tonight across Brazil. The

:12:54. > :13:03.weight of expectation is immense and will only grow as this tournament

:13:04. > :13:03.progresses. We know Brazil will also face South American opposition in

:13:04. > :13:12.the quarterfinals. Uruguay. Uruguay were without their

:13:13. > :13:14.banned striker Luis Suarez of course, although they are going to

:13:15. > :13:17.appeal against his four match suspension for biting. They were

:13:18. > :13:19.certainly a bit toothless without him and the Colombian midfielder

:13:20. > :13:22.Hames Rodriguez has made the difference so far with this

:13:23. > :13:26.brilliant goal midway through the first half. That's one of the best

:13:27. > :13:28.we've seen here in Brazil and it's his fourth of the tournament that

:13:29. > :13:33.puts him level with Neymar, Muller They lead 2-0 with about five

:13:34. > :13:55.minutes left. It is day 17 but They lead 2-0 with about five

:13:56. > :14:02.the sixth day at Wimbledon: Serena Williams has been knocked out. No

:14:03. > :14:07.worries for Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova, who are both through.

:14:08. > :14:12.The most powerful woman ever to play tennis. Serena Williams made to feel

:14:13. > :14:15.utterly uncertain. That was the extent of the achievements are

:14:16. > :14:22.number one Court. She came across Belize Hornets, from France who

:14:23. > :14:26.stood up to the power and had the confidence to bring Williams to her

:14:27. > :14:31.knees. She had beaten Williams once before and that was in February.

:14:32. > :14:42.This was Wimbledon. This was match point in the third set. Here on the

:14:43. > :14:45.hill with the rain holding off, there was a view of Serena

:14:46. > :14:50.Williams' demise. Now there is a clear opportunity for someone else.

:14:51. > :14:58.What about Maria Sharapova? Champion here a decade ago. Full volume and

:14:59. > :15:04.power in a victory against Alison Riske. As many famous British

:15:05. > :15:09.sporting faces as possible were squeezed into the royal box,

:15:10. > :15:20.although no current England foot Wallace, they saw Rafael Nadal come

:15:21. > :15:26.from a set down to beat the player from Kazakhstan. Relaxed and

:15:27. > :15:31.confident, that would be Andy Murray, able to demonstrate his

:15:32. > :15:36.mastery of a tennis ball on a day off indoors, in a way centre court

:15:37. > :15:45.would have appreciated. Just a quick rug union results.

:15:46. > :15:53.Scotland have their first defeat under their new coach. They were

:15:54. > :15:55.beaten by the Springboks in Port Elizabeth. 55-6. That is just about

:15:56. > :15:56.it in Rio on a lively day that Rozelle scraped into the

:15:57. > :15:58.quarterfinals. A reminder of the main news: More criticism of the

:15:59. > :16:04.Prime Minister over his failure to block the appointment of Jean Claude

:16:05. > :16:06.Jonker ours EU commission president. Alex Salmond said it was another

:16:07. > :16:11.reason for Scotland to vote for independence. You can see more on

:16:12. > :16:24.those stories on the BBC News Channel. That is all from me.

:16:25. > :16:29.those stories on the BBC News night. Good evening. After a couple

:16:30. > :16:30.of days with an angry atmosphere overhead, I can offer something more
