:00:57. > :01:00.The former Conservative Cabinet Minister Lord

:01:01. > :01:04.Tebbit says he thinks there may well have been a cover up of sexual abuse

:01:05. > :01:08.claims among politicians in the 1980s to protect the establishment.

:01:09. > :01:11.His comments came after it emerged that more than 100 documents

:01:12. > :01:20.relating to allegations of abuse are missing or have been destroyed.

:01:21. > :01:22.In the 1980s, this famously brutal Westminster

:01:23. > :01:27.building was the Home Office. Back then,

:01:28. > :01:29.was there a cover-up behind these walls to conceal allegations

:01:30. > :01:32.of child abuse by powerful men? This morning the former Cabinet

:01:33. > :01:34.minister Norman Tebbit told Andrew Marr he believed there might

:01:35. > :01:38.have been. It was more important to protect

:01:39. > :01:42.the system than to delve too far That view I think was wrong then

:01:43. > :01:48.and it has spectacularly shown to have been wrong

:01:49. > :01:53.because the abuses have grown. We now know that back then this man,

:01:54. > :01:59.the late Tory MP Geoffrey Dickens, compiled documents containing

:02:00. > :02:02.potential evidence of abuse. He gave them to the then

:02:03. > :02:05.Home Secretary Leon Brittan who said this week he had asked the police

:02:06. > :02:09.to consider the documents. Now the Home Office has revealed

:02:10. > :02:12.that 114 of them went missing They may contain evidence of

:02:13. > :02:18.whether 30 years ago children were abused here in what was once

:02:19. > :02:22.a south London guest house. The government is asking

:02:23. > :02:25.for an independent assessment of the We believe there needs to be

:02:26. > :02:33.a thorough and independent inquiry, crucially,

:02:34. > :02:39.looking not into just what might have happened to these documents,

:02:40. > :02:43.but looking more generally and drawing together the threads from

:02:44. > :02:49.all the various investigations. The scandal centred on Jimmy Savile

:02:50. > :02:57.has already spawned a string of police and child protection

:02:58. > :02:59.investigations across the UK. His crimes prompted other

:03:00. > :03:02.victims to tell their stories. In Northern Ireland the Historical

:03:03. > :03:05.Institutional Abuse Inquiry is As is Operation Pallial in

:03:06. > :03:18.North Wales. Operation Garford is investigating

:03:19. > :03:20.alleged abuse at schools in Suffolk. Rochdale Council is investigating

:03:21. > :03:22.allegations involving among others the late

:03:23. > :03:24.Liberal Democrat MP Cyril Smith. And in south London there is

:03:25. > :03:26.Operation Fernbridge, the inquiry into the guest house alleged to have

:03:27. > :03:30.been visited by prominent A growing number

:03:31. > :03:35.of MPs are concerned that Westminster's darker secrets remain

:03:36. > :03:41.undiscovered because of a cover-up. It will bring politics

:03:42. > :03:45.into disrepute. I think the Prime Minister

:03:46. > :03:50.and the Home Secretary need to The passing of time makes all

:03:51. > :03:57.of this so much harder to unearth. The revelations of the Savile

:03:58. > :04:09.affair show it can be done. It's also emerged Leon Brittan has

:04:10. > :04:27.been interviewed by police about The Independent on Sunday says Lord

:04:28. > :04:32.Brittan was questioned under caution With me now is our

:04:33. > :04:43.Home Affairs Correspondent. We know that a woman came forward

:04:44. > :04:47.and said that she was raped by a man in 1967. The police have said that

:04:48. > :04:52.last month they interviewed a man in his event is in connection with

:04:53. > :04:59.those allegations and we know that that man is Lord Brittan. The

:05:00. > :05:03.inquiries are continuing. He is expected to make a statement about

:05:04. > :05:07.this tomorrow but the police have said the woman was over the age of

:05:08. > :05:15.18 when this alleged offence happened. It is not a child sexual

:05:16. > :05:18.abuse situation. It is a coincidence that this has emerged during the

:05:19. > :05:24.week when he was asked questions about his handling of this file.

:05:25. > :05:25.That maybe journalists making inquiries, but it is certainly a

:05:26. > :05:28.coincidence. Israeli police have arrested a

:05:29. > :05:31.number of people in connection with The body of Mohammad Abu-Khdair was

:05:32. > :05:35.found in a forest near Jerusalem There's been speculation his death

:05:36. > :05:39.was in revenge for the abduction and The Prime Minister, Benjamin

:05:40. > :05:45.Netanyahu, said a "tough line against anyone" who broke the law,

:05:46. > :05:56.from whatever side, would be taken. Mohammad Abu Khdair was abducted

:05:57. > :05:59.and killed on Wednesday. A postmortem suggests that

:06:00. > :06:03.the 16-year-old was burned His family

:06:04. > :06:09.in East Jerusalem buried him Israel's police have now arrested

:06:10. > :06:32.a number of Jewish suspects. TRANSLATION: Those who perpetrated

:06:33. > :06:37.this crime will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Such

:06:38. > :06:39.murderers do not belong in Israeli society.

:06:40. > :06:41.To Mohammad's father, here accepting condolences,

:06:42. > :07:08.Mohammad's 15-year-old cousin Tariq from America.

:07:09. > :07:12.kicked and punched by the Israeli police during a demonstration

:07:13. > :07:25.This afternoon, Tarik, his face still swollen, was released

:07:26. > :07:28.I was watching a group of people and they came from the side

:07:29. > :07:32.of me and they hit me and they kept hitting me and then I fell asleep

:07:33. > :07:37.The US State Department says it is profoundly troubled

:07:38. > :07:43.It says it wants a speedy and credible investigation.

:07:44. > :07:50.Israel's Justice Ministry says it is investigating.

:07:51. > :07:54.Israel has further worries of its own.

:07:55. > :07:56.On Tuesday, the country buried three of

:07:57. > :08:12.Israel has yet to find their killers.

:08:13. > :08:15.The government's ruled out a real terms pay rise for public sector

:08:16. > :08:19.The Business Minister Matthew Hancock has warned that they won't

:08:20. > :08:21.get an above inflation increase until at least 2018.

:08:22. > :08:31.His comments come ahead of a strike on Thursday, when more

:08:32. > :08:39.In tennis, Novak Djokovic has become the Wimbledon men's champion.

:08:40. > :08:42.He beat Roger Federer in a hard fought final

:08:43. > :08:59.-- almost four hours. After a fortnight, here came the old guard,

:09:00. > :09:07.striding around Wimbledon like they always expected to be run Sunday. If

:09:08. > :09:17.Roger Federer displayed their friends, it stopped as soon as play

:09:18. > :09:25.began. -- deference. Roger Federer is fast approaching his birthday.

:09:26. > :09:37.The first set was to Roger Federer after a tie-break. Novak Djokovic

:09:38. > :09:41.had to do more. Novak Djokovic needed medical attention but he had

:09:42. > :09:53.a break of serve to comfort him and under pressure he served out. One

:09:54. > :09:57.set all. Third set, the players were still basically inseparable. Another

:09:58. > :10:06.tie-break. A crucial mistake made by Roger Federer. In the fourth set,

:10:07. > :10:10.things hit another level. Novak Djokovic working, getting the break

:10:11. > :10:18.of serve, you sensed, he sensed, would be decisive. Back and forth,

:10:19. > :10:31.Novak Djokovic served for the match at 5-3. Roger Federer survived. He

:10:32. > :10:39.won four games in a row. It was astonishing. Into the fifth set,

:10:40. > :10:47.this match could not end in a draw, but how could either player B press

:10:48. > :10:56.as a loser? Roger Federer made a mistake. Novak Djokovic won after

:10:57. > :10:58.both players had given everything. I respect your career and everything

:10:59. > :11:04.you have done and thank you for letting me win. Roger Federer stuck

:11:05. > :11:15.on seven Wimbledon titles. Not the greatest ever? That is a matter of

:11:16. > :11:22.perspective. He was gracious on court, but what about trying to win

:11:23. > :11:30.his eighth Wimbledon title? He said, see you next year.

:11:31. > :11:33.Hundreds of thousands of people have turned out to see

:11:34. > :11:35.Italian Vincenzo Nibali win the second stage of the Tour de France.

:11:36. > :11:38.But Britain's Mark Cavendish, one of the race's leading cyclists,

:11:39. > :11:41.has been forced to drop out after dislocating his shoulder

:11:42. > :11:45.As Yorkshire once again embraced the Tour in their hundreds

:11:46. > :11:51.and thousands, the excitement was tinged with disappointment.

:11:52. > :11:51.The riders setting out for the second stage from York with

:11:52. > :11:56.Mark Cavendish's crash just metres from

:11:57. > :11:59.the finish had left him sprawled on the tarmac nursing a dislocated

:12:00. > :12:06.This morning his worst fears were confirmed.

:12:07. > :12:10.His Tour was over, finished before it had barely begun.

:12:11. > :12:17.I held a bit of optimism that maybe it was just swelling and it

:12:18. > :12:22.would go down this morning but it is actually worse this morning.

:12:23. > :12:29.Still the fans turned out in their droves.

:12:30. > :12:32.The hills often struggled to hold them.

:12:33. > :12:36.At the stage's highest point, Holme Moss, some 60,000 somehow made it.

:12:37. > :12:38.The riders forced to thread their way through.

:12:39. > :12:42.In the suburbs of Sheffield the world's best were

:12:43. > :12:47.reduced to a crawl on Jenkin Road, its 33% gradient the steepest in the

:12:48. > :12:54.whole Tour, bringing out the best in Britain's champion Chris Froome.

:12:55. > :12:56.Everywhere in Yorkshire this weekend the support for this

:12:57. > :13:00.Here in Sheffield at the finish line thousands have been waiting

:13:01. > :13:07.The first man they saw after a decisive break,

:13:08. > :13:13.Chris Froome is well placed in fifth overall but the leader's yellow

:13:14. > :13:17.jersey belongs to Nibali after a weekend which he and the people

:13:18. > :13:28.There's been a home victory for Lewis Hamilton who's won the

:13:29. > :13:32.British Grand Prix at Silverstone, despite starting sixth on the grid.

:13:33. > :13:34.It came after his Mercedes team mate, Nico

:13:35. > :13:40.Rosberg, who had been leading, was forced out with gearbox problems.

:13:41. > :13:43.After 50 years of Grand Prix racing Silverstone was

:13:44. > :13:49.Stars of the circuits past Damon Hill and Sir Jackie Stewart joined

:13:50. > :13:55.Racing royalty watched by British royalty.

:13:56. > :13:58.Soon it was over to the current kings of speed.

:13:59. > :14:04.Nico Rosberg is the man setting the pace in the championship.

:14:05. > :14:06.Lewis Hamilton needed to chase him down from sixth on the grid.

:14:07. > :14:10.He flew off the line but not everybody started as smoothly.

:14:11. > :14:12.Kimi Raikkonen crashed out on the first lap, thankfully

:14:13. > :14:18.After a long delay what followed was worth the wait.

:14:19. > :14:22.With Hamilton on the charge the stage seemed set

:14:23. > :14:34.A broken gearbox ended his race after just 29 laps,

:14:35. > :14:37.allowing Hamilton to cruise to the chequered flag.

:14:38. > :14:40.Hamilton is going to win the British Grand Prix.

:14:41. > :14:42.After his mistake in qualifying yesterday this was

:14:43. > :14:47.How quickly his fortunes have changed.

:14:48. > :14:51.It is very mixed at the moment, but just to see the support we have,

:14:52. > :14:53.I could see everyone cheering us on throughout the race.

:14:54. > :14:55.We have the greatest fans and arriving today,

:14:56. > :15:01.This was the result the fans would have dreamed of.

:15:02. > :15:03.Lewis Hamilton winning the British Grand Prix

:15:04. > :15:09.The first time he won it he went on to take the drivers' championship.

:15:10. > :15:15.He is now just four points behind Nico Rosberg.
