:01:02. > :01:07.considered the issue in 2006 and this is a dramatic about turn from a
:01:08. > :01:11.figure who is an important figure in Anglicanism and it goes against the
:01:12. > :01:16.position of his church only a few days before the issue returns to the
:01:17. > :01:20.House of Lords. Lord Carey has been an outspoken
:01:21. > :01:24.defender of traditionalist teaching in the church. That has made his
:01:25. > :01:30.sudden change of heart to support assisted dying all the more shocking
:01:31. > :01:33.to the church he led. He questioned whether the law should force
:01:34. > :01:38.terminally ill patients to an unbearable point. He said that in
:01:39. > :01:45.opposing assisted dying the church could actually be promoting anguish
:01:46. > :01:49.and pain. The Church of England synod overwhelmingly rejected
:01:50. > :01:52.assisted suicide in 2012. A senior bishop said today that helping
:01:53. > :01:57.people to die would undermine the sanctity of life. The intrinsic
:01:58. > :02:02.value of each human life is something that many people could
:02:03. > :02:08.accept whether or not they are people of faith. It basically says
:02:09. > :02:13.that everybody is of value and is of value to society as part of our
:02:14. > :02:17.cohesion as a society is caring for them, looking after them, right up
:02:18. > :02:22.to the point of their death. The assisted dying Bill, which goes
:02:23. > :02:25.before the House of Lords next week, would require two doctors should
:02:26. > :02:29.confirm that patients were terminally ill and had reached a
:02:30. > :02:34.settled decision to end their lives before giving them drugs to do so.
:02:35. > :02:39.Lord Carey said he had been particularly moved by the case of a
:02:40. > :02:47.man who was severely disabled and pleaded in vain for help to end his
:02:48. > :02:54.life. Other Anglicans exist that it might dominate need not be
:02:55. > :02:58.unchristian. The sanctity of life to some people means quality, to be
:02:59. > :03:02.able to say, this is the point I do not want to carry on any more and
:03:03. > :03:07.from a Christian point of view they would hand their gift of life back
:03:08. > :03:11.to God. The view of the synod meeting in York this weekend is that
:03:12. > :03:15.while assisted dying might help some people it would expose many elderly
:03:16. > :03:21.and disabled people to danger, placing them under pressure to end
:03:22. > :03:28.their lives prematurely. Lord Carey's remarks put him
:03:29. > :03:31.alongside an increasing number of Anglicans reinterpreting what it
:03:32. > :03:34.means to be a good Christian and coming to different conclusions than
:03:35. > :03:38.those traditionally held by the church. It is a rising to hear it
:03:39. > :03:43.from this traditionalist figure in the church. -- surprising.
