:00:19. > :00:24.Good evening. The Church of England has called for

:00:25. > :00:27.a new inquiry into assisted dying after the former Archbishop of

:00:28. > :00:30.Canterbury, Lord Carey, said he had changed his mind about the issue and

:00:31. > :00:33.now believes terminally ill people should be given

:00:34. > :00:36.the right to end their lives. Lord Carey says he intends to

:00:37. > :00:39.support a bill which will be debated in the House of Lords next week.

:00:40. > :00:48.Our religious affairs correspondent, Robert Pigott, reports.

:00:49. > :00:54.Paul Lamb was left with limited movement in one hand. He campaigned

:00:55. > :00:58.for the right to take his life. He challenged opponents of assisted

:00:59. > :01:03.dying to heed Lord Carey's words. They have no idea what pain is. They

:01:04. > :01:07.talk about, you know, people like me having to endure for the rest of,

:01:08. > :01:11.you know, my life. Pain and suffering. Because they think it's

:01:12. > :01:18.right for me. They're not going through it. The legislation before

:01:19. > :01:23.the House of Lords on Friday won't help Mr Lamw it would restrict

:01:24. > :01:30.assisted dying to terminally ill people in England and Wales with

:01:31. > :01:34.less than six months to live. M mitt Writing in the Daily Mail, Lord

:01:35. > :01:38.Carey questioned whether the law should force terminally ill patients

:01:39. > :01:43.to an unbearable point. He said that in opposing assisted dying the

:01:44. > :01:52.church could now actually be promoting anguish and pain. Lord

:01:53. > :01:55.Joffey said his change of heart would have a significant impact in

:01:56. > :02:02.the. The.Lords. There are a number of peeres who are open minded who

:02:03. > :02:07.are seriously concerned, want answers to their concerns. When they

:02:08. > :02:14.see the analysis which Lord Carey has brought to bring about a change

:02:15. > :02:20.in his views, it is certain that it will have some impact on them. The

:02:21. > :02:26.church, meeting at the York synod this weekend, remains strongly

:02:27. > :02:30.opposed to assisted dying. Justin Welby described the bill as both

:02:31. > :02:34."mistaken and dangerous" he warned if it were passed many elderly and

:02:35. > :02:40.disabled people would be placed under pressure to end their lives

:02:41. > :02:43.prematurely. The synod decisively rejected assisted dying in 2012. An

:02:44. > :02:49.increasing number of Anglicans are prepared to make up their own minds.

:02:50. > :03:01.A senior bishop said the church believes all human life was

:03:02. > :03:05.sacrosanct. It's basically says that everybody is of value and is of

:03:06. > :03:10.value to society and part of our cohesion, as a society, part of our

:03:11. > :03:14.compassion, is caring for them, looking after them, right up to the

:03:15. > :03:18.point of their death. The church called this evening for the Assisted

:03:19. > :03:23.Dying Bill to be withdrawn. It said a Royal Commission should be set up

:03:24. > :03:39.to investigate this important and complex issue in-depth. .

:03:40. > :03:45.The United Nations has called for a ceasefire between Israel and

:03:46. > :03:47.Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Palestine officials say the number

:03:48. > :03:52.of people killed in Israel airstrikes over the last five days

:03:53. > :03:57.has risen to more than 130. Israel say it is's targeting militants who

:03:58. > :04:00.have fired hundreds of rockets into their Terry. From Gaza, our Middle

:04:01. > :04:09.East editor, Jeremy Bowen reports. There is no such thing

:04:10. > :04:11.as a surgical strike, even with Israel's modern arsenal,

:04:12. > :04:13.especially in Gaza's densely packed towns and refugee camps.

:04:14. > :04:15.This morning, neighbours were digging

:04:16. > :04:18.in the rubble for Suha Abu Sada. She was killed along with one other

:04:19. > :04:20.woman, just after dawn, in an Israeli airstrike.

:04:21. > :04:25.The missile cut through reinforced concrete.

:04:26. > :04:35.Suha's sister identified her. Suha had multiple handicaps.

:04:36. > :04:39.This was a home for the disabled. Then someone said the Israelis had

:04:40. > :04:44.warned another attack was coming. We heard a rocket and took cover.

:04:45. > :04:52.But it was Hamas, firing into Israel.

:04:53. > :05:04.At the mortuary Suha's brother, Yusuf, waited for her funeral.

:05:05. > :05:07.He showed us his sister's body. "How many of the people killed so

:05:08. > :05:10.far are civilians, and how many are terrorists?

:05:11. > :05:14.And they're not terrorists, they're resistants,

:05:15. > :05:18.and we're proud of them." Suha Abu Sada's funeral was quiet,

:05:19. > :05:22.like her life. The United Nations says that 77%

:05:23. > :05:27.of the Palestinians killed in this campaign were civilians.

:05:28. > :05:31.Belligerents are obliged under the laws of war to protect civilians.

:05:32. > :05:39.The UN has already asked whether Israel is working in the way that it

:05:40. > :05:43.should to fulfill those obligations. After the attack on the centre

:05:44. > :05:49.for the disabled, it is clear that the Israelis have

:05:50. > :05:52.some serious questions to answer. So do Hamas about their attacks,

:05:53. > :05:54.both sides say they're protecting their people.

:05:55. > :06:06.Jeremy Bowen, BBC News, Gaza. Our Middle East correspondent,

:06:07. > :06:07.James Reynolds, is in Tel Aviv. James we've seen lots

:06:08. > :06:16.of casualties in Gaza. What does Israel say to that?

:06:17. > :06:23.It says it takes care in selecting its targets. I put Jeremy's

:06:24. > :06:27.opponents to senior figures today. They give an example of how they go

:06:28. > :06:31.about their business. If they target a command post from Hamas, in a

:06:32. > :06:34.home, or a built up area, they say they will issue a warning first.

:06:35. > :06:38.Fire smoke or make a phone call. They will give people at least 10

:06:39. > :06:42.minutes to get out before they fire their missile strike. Israel says it

:06:43. > :06:46.is often aborted strikes, perhaps several hundred strikes for fear of

:06:47. > :06:50.civilian casualties. Very, very clearly people in Gaza do not

:06:51. > :06:53.believe Israel's explanations. I think it's worth saying that

:06:54. > :06:58.Israel's aim of course is to stop all rocket fire. Critically, IDF

:06:59. > :07:02.sources have been telling us there is still thousands of rockets left

:07:03. > :07:08.in Palestinian militants hands in the Gaza Strip for that reason many

:07:09. > :07:10.Israelis believe there should be a ground offensive, but of course

:07:11. > :07:13.others believe there should be a ceasefire. James Reynolds, in Tel

:07:14. > :07:22.Aviv. Thank you very much. The restaurant chain Pizza Express

:07:23. > :07:25.has been sold to a Chinese company for ?900 million.

:07:26. > :07:28.The private equity firm, Hony, has bought the chain, which is currently

:07:29. > :07:35.owned by the Gondola Group, and has more than 400 branches in the UK.

:07:36. > :07:39.England cricketers James Anderson and Joe Root have broken the record

:07:40. > :07:42.for the highest last-wicket stand in Test history after scoring 198

:07:43. > :07:44.runs against India at Trent Bridge. England were all out for 496

:07:45. > :08:01.in the first innings. James Anderson's face screams as you

:08:02. > :08:05.as youenter Trent Bridge. He is the worse batsman in the England team.

:08:06. > :08:11.The batted batting order was rend arered out of orderrd. At the other

:08:12. > :08:17.end, Joe Root looked every inch the senior player. This four took him to

:08:18. > :08:21.a century. He had taken the pressure off his team-mates. Specially the

:08:22. > :08:24.captain. India hurled the ball towards Anderson's chin. He chipped

:08:25. > :08:30.it to the boundary. This went on all morning. Every run, every missed

:08:31. > :08:34.opportunity made the whole experience excruciating for India.

:08:35. > :08:38.Their lead was disappearing in front of their disbelieving eyes. A shot

:08:39. > :08:45.to sum up the whole thing. Unpress dented. James Anderson's first ever

:08:46. > :08:53.50. By the time he was out he and Root put on an inconceivable 198. In

:08:54. > :08:58.the match, from nowhere, England were ahead. James Anderson, 81 runs

:08:59. > :09:03.scored, astonishing, thank you very much. It's India's second I think

:09:04. > :09:10.so. Would you mind trying to get us some wickets? He did his best to

:09:11. > :09:17.Vijay, Prior couldn't compete the job. India 49-1, surprised? Any

:09:18. > :09:24.wicket is a rarity in this Test. Tell me when the next one is am

:09:25. > :09:34.coulding Here came two. Vijay might have been caught. Still time in the

:09:35. > :09:38.Test for more drama? Maybe. Stand by for a draw, I would say, on the

:09:39. > :09:46.final day. To win a Test match you need to take wickets. Even tail

:09:47. > :09:54.enders have made batting look orringly easy. Thank you very much.

:09:55. > :09:58.The last surviving founding member of the influential New York punk

:09:59. > :10:00.band, The Ramones, Tommy Ramone, has died.

:10:01. > :10:02.Tommy Ramone was 62 and had been treated for cancer.

:10:03. > :10:05.He joined The Ramones as a drummer in 1974 and co-produced

:10:06. > :10:10.their first three albums.
