:00:00. > :00:14.The United Nations calls for a ceasefire between Israel and

:00:15. > :00:17.Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian officials say at least

:00:18. > :00:20.140 people have been killed in Israeli air strikes over the last

:00:21. > :00:25.five days. Changing his mind on right to die,

:00:26. > :00:28.the former Archbishop of Canterbury says terminally ill people should be

:00:29. > :00:32.allowed to end their lives. England fight back against India at

:00:33. > :00:50.Trent Bridge, with a record-breaking partnership.

:00:51. > :00:56.Good evening. The United Nations Security Council has called for a

:00:57. > :01:00.ceasefire between Israel and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. It

:01:01. > :01:03.comes as Palestinian officials say the number of people killed in

:01:04. > :01:08.Israeli air strikes, over the last five days, has risen to more than

:01:09. > :01:11.140. Israel says it's targeting militants, who fired hundreds of

:01:12. > :01:15.rockets into their territory. Tonight, Israel's military has

:01:16. > :01:19.warned Palestinians living in northern Gaza to evacuate the area

:01:20. > :01:25.for their own safety. In a moment, we'll speak to James Reynolds in Tel

:01:26. > :01:33.Aviv. First our Middle East editor, Jermey Bowen, reports from Gaza.

:01:34. > :01:38.There is no such thing as a surgical strike, even with Israel's modern

:01:39. > :01:45.Arsenal, especially in Gaza's densely packed towns and refugee

:01:46. > :01:50.camps. This morning neighbours were digging in the rubble for Suha Abu

:01:51. > :01:55.Sada. She was killed along with one other woman, just after dawn, in an

:01:56. > :02:06.Israeli air strike. The missile cut through reinforced concrete. Her

:02:07. > :02:13.sister identified her. She had multiple hand caps, this was a home

:02:14. > :02:17.for the disabled. Then someone said the Israelis had warned another

:02:18. > :02:28.attack was coming. We heard a rocket and took cover. But it was Hamas,

:02:29. > :02:40.firing into Israel. At the mortuary, they're busy and they work fast.

:02:41. > :02:47.Suha's brother waited for her to be prepared for her funeral. He took us

:02:48. > :02:52.to see her body. He rejected Israel's claim that it

:02:53. > :02:57.tries hard not to kill civilians. TRANSLATION: How many of the people

:02:58. > :03:01.killed so far are civilians? Even those they call terrorists, they are

:03:02. > :03:08.not terrorists. They are resistance and we are proud of them. Suha's

:03:09. > :03:13.funeral was quiet, like her life. The United Nations says that 77% of

:03:14. > :03:25.the Palestinians, killed in this campaign, were civilians. Bling

:03:26. > :03:31.rants are -- beligerants are obliged to protect the innocents. After the

:03:32. > :03:35.attack on the centre for the disabled, it is clear that the

:03:36. > :03:41.Israelis have some serious questions to answer.

:03:42. > :03:46.So do Hamas about their attacks. Both sides say they're protecting

:03:47. > :03:52.their people. It's hard to enforce the laws of war, but they're the

:03:53. > :03:58.most impartial measure of actions and their consequences.

:03:59. > :04:02.Well our Middle East correspondent, James Reynolds is in Tel Aviv.

:04:03. > :04:09.James, we've seen lots of casualties in Gaza, what does Israel say about

:04:10. > :04:14.that? First of all, it says it's looking into the strike described

:04:15. > :04:18.there in Jermey Bowen's report. Overall sources stress they take

:04:19. > :04:22.tremendous care in selecting which targets to hit in Gaza. They issue

:04:23. > :04:26.warnings, firing smoke or phoning up the people in the building giving

:04:27. > :04:30.them ten minutes to believe. People in Gaza do not believe the warnings

:04:31. > :04:33.are sufficient time. Israel wants to stop all rocket fire from Gaza.

:04:34. > :04:38.Tonight, here in Tel Aviv, we've seen pretty clear evidence that

:04:39. > :04:42.rocket fire continues. We've watched Israeli interceptor missiles streak

:04:43. > :04:46.through the air and intercept, we believe, three Palestinian rockets.

:04:47. > :04:50.There were sirens, explosions for about ten to 12 minutes here. Israel

:04:51. > :04:54.believe there may be several thousand Palestinian rockets still

:04:55. > :04:59.in Gaza and it clearly wants to get rid of them. We know that in the

:05:00. > :05:02.last hour, the IDF has asked or instructed the residents of the

:05:03. > :05:08.northern part of the Gaza Strip to leave their homes for their own

:05:09. > :05:10.safety. It may be that is the prelude to an intense, increased

:05:11. > :05:16.activity in Gaza. Thank you.

:05:17. > :05:20.The Church of England has called for a new inquiry into assisted dying,

:05:21. > :05:23.after the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey, said he had

:05:24. > :05:26.changed his mind about the issue. Lord Carey says he now believes

:05:27. > :05:30.terminally ill people should be given the right to end their lives

:05:31. > :05:38.and he intends to support a bill, which will be debated in the House

:05:39. > :05:41.of Lords next week. Paul Lamb was paralysed after a road

:05:42. > :05:46.accident and left with only limited movement in one hand. He's

:05:47. > :05:51.campaigned for the right to take his life. Tonight, he challenged

:05:52. > :05:56.opponents of assisted dying to heed Lord Carey's words. They have no

:05:57. > :06:02.idea what pain is. They talk about people like me having to endure for

:06:03. > :06:05.the rest of, you know, my life, pain and suffering, because they think

:06:06. > :06:09.it's right for me. But they're not going through it.

:06:10. > :06:14.Lord Carey says the suffering of people facing painful deaths led to

:06:15. > :06:18.his dra mat Iing change of -- dramatic change of heart. Lord Carey

:06:19. > :06:24.questioned whether the law should force terminally ill patients to an

:06:25. > :06:27.unbearable point. He said that in opposing assisted dying, the church

:06:28. > :06:35.could now actually be promoting anguish and pain. Lord Joffey, whose

:06:36. > :06:39.assisted dying bill was opposed by Lord Carey, said the former's

:06:40. > :06:44.Archbishop's willingness to think again would have significant impact

:06:45. > :06:49.in the House of Lords. When they see the analysis which Lord Carey has

:06:50. > :06:56.brought to bring about a change in his views, it is certain that it

:06:57. > :07:00.will have some impact on them. But the church, meeting at the York

:07:01. > :07:03.synod this weekend, remains strongly opposed to assisted dying. The

:07:04. > :07:08.current Archbishop of Canterbury described the bill as both mistaken

:07:09. > :07:11.and dangerous. He warned that were it passed, many elderly and disabled

:07:12. > :07:16.people would be placed under pressure to end their lives

:07:17. > :07:22.prematurely. The synod decisively rejected

:07:23. > :07:27.assistant dying in 2012. Today, senior Anglicans insisted that all

:07:28. > :07:35.human life was sacrosanct. Everybody is of value and is a value to

:07:36. > :07:39.society. Part of our cohesion as a society is caring for them, looking

:07:40. > :07:44.after them right up to the point of their death. A survey carried out in

:07:45. > :07:50.England and Wales for the group Dignity in Dying last April

:07:51. > :07:54.suggested 76% of people supported an assisted dying law, with 12%

:07:55. > :07:58.opposing it. The assisted dying bill comes before the House of Lords on

:07:59. > :08:01.Friday. If passed, it would apply to terminally ill people in England and

:08:02. > :08:08.Wales, with less than six months to live.

:08:09. > :08:12.Tens of thousands of people in Northern Ireland have been taking

:08:13. > :08:15.part in parades organised by the Protestant Orange Order. Today is

:08:16. > :08:19.the most significant one in the Protestant marching ical encar,

:08:20. > :08:23.almost 700 parades took place. There were protests after restrictions

:08:24. > :08:27.were placed on a march in north Belfast, butt demonstrations passed

:08:28. > :08:30.off peacefully. The restaurant chain Pizza Express

:08:31. > :08:35.has been sold to a Chinese company for ?900 million. The private equity

:08:36. > :08:38.firm Hony has bought the chain which is currently owned by the Gondola

:08:39. > :08:43.Group and has more than 400 branchs in the UK.

:08:44. > :08:47.The Pakistani schoolgirl and campaigner, Malala Yousufzai, who

:08:48. > :08:51.was shot in the head by the Taliban, has travelled to Nigeria to meet the

:08:52. > :08:55.families of more than 200 kidnapped schoolgirls. They were abducted by

:08:56. > :08:59.the militant Islamist group Boko Haram in April. Malala is

:09:00. > :09:05.campaigning for better education for all girls.

:09:06. > :09:10.John Simpson reports. Malala has come to a country with a

:09:11. > :09:17.dreadful record of girls education and it's three months after nearly

:09:18. > :09:21.300 schoolgirls were kidnapped in north-eastern Nigeria. Today is her

:09:22. > :09:26.17th birthday. Happy birthday, Malala, from the BBC. Hello. Very

:09:27. > :09:30.nice to see you. Thank you. Of these girls, and dozens of others who've

:09:31. > :09:34.been kidnapped since, the only ones who are free are those who've

:09:35. > :09:40.escaped. The Nigerian government may be getting help and advice from

:09:41. > :09:46.Britain, the US, France, China and so on, but there's been no serious

:09:47. > :09:53.progress in getting the girls back. The extreme Islamic Boko Haram

:09:54. > :09:58.movement, remains a strong security threat in the north-east and other

:09:59. > :10:02.parts of Nigeria. In today's newspapers, the government claims

:10:03. > :10:08.some success in its campaign against Boko Haram, though the situation is

:10:09. > :10:13.certainly not improving. But Malala's not here to campaign

:10:14. > :10:18.against terrorism. She's here to press the demand for better

:10:19. > :10:24.education for girls and women. Nevertheless, she told me the two

:10:25. > :10:28.are linked. At 17, just, she's become a diplomat as well as a

:10:29. > :10:34.campaigner. Malala finds herself at the heart of an immensely difficult

:10:35. > :10:42.and complicated crisis here, which has engulfed Nigeria.

:10:43. > :10:45.Now with the day's big sports news, we go to the BBC Sport Centre. Good

:10:46. > :10:49.evening. Good evening. Thank you. James

:10:50. > :10:54.Anderson and Joe Root added their names to cricket's history books by

:10:55. > :10:58.setting a world record tenth wicket stand in the first Test against

:10:59. > :11:02.India. Their impressive performance has given England an outside chance

:11:03. > :11:08.of victory with one day remaining. Joe Wilson reports.

:11:09. > :11:12.James Anderson's face screams at you when you enter Trent Bridge. He's

:11:13. > :11:16.the worst batsman in the England team. Well the batting order was

:11:17. > :11:19.rendered out of order. Batting is a question of partnerships. At the

:11:20. > :11:23.other end, Joe Root was looking every inch the senior player. This

:11:24. > :11:27.four took him to a vengery. He knew -- century. He knew how much he owed

:11:28. > :11:34.to Anderson staying with him. The whole team knew it. The shot to sum

:11:35. > :11:38.up the whole thing, unprecedented. James Anderson's first ever 50. By

:11:39. > :11:45.the time he was out, he and Root had put on an inconceivable 198, highest

:11:46. > :11:50.ever tenth-wicket partnership in history and from nowhere, England

:11:51. > :11:52.were ahead. James Anderson, 81 runs scored, astonishing, thanks very

:11:53. > :11:59.much. Now it's India's second innings, would you mind trying to

:12:00. > :12:06.get us some wickets? He did his best. Prior couldn't complete the

:12:07. > :12:09.job. Ali did his own catching. India 49-1, surprised? Any wicket is

:12:10. > :12:15.relatively a rarity in this test. Tell me when the next is coming.

:12:16. > :12:20.Hang on, here came two. Was he caught or stumed. Almost

:12:21. > :12:25.instantly another one. Grabbed by Stokes. Day to play in the Test but

:12:26. > :12:30.taking wickets is such an effort, it will take a lot for one team to win

:12:31. > :12:35.it. Now after the humiliation of their

:12:36. > :12:38.7-1 defeat to Germany in the World Cup semifinal, Brazil are in action

:12:39. > :12:44.in a play-off match for third place against the Netherlands. Dan Roan is

:12:45. > :12:49.in Rio de Janeiro. I'm guessing it's a rather strange atmosphere already

:12:50. > :12:52.there. Very muted atmosphere, as you'd

:12:53. > :12:57.expect. This third-fourth play-off is a game that nobody want to play

:12:58. > :13:01.and certainly not the match that Brazil's fans here expected to be

:13:02. > :13:05.watching their team in in the final weekend. If they expected them to

:13:06. > :13:09.restore a modicum of pride tonight, they're going about it the wrong

:13:10. > :13:16.way. Brazil found themselves 2-0 down in the first 17 minutes. First

:13:17. > :13:21.Robin Van Persie with a penalty. After that, Blind putting the

:13:22. > :13:26.Netherlands 2-0 up. The reason Brazil are playing a meaningless

:13:27. > :13:30.match in this cup is because of Germany. They are preparing for the

:13:31. > :13:33.final, seen by many as the favourites, the team of the

:13:34. > :13:38.tournament. But they are up against a man who many see as the most

:13:39. > :13:42.talented player of his generation in Messi. It will be fascinating to see

:13:43. > :13:47.whether he can dominate the final tomorrow. Argentina won't lack

:13:48. > :13:50.support. As many as 100,000 fans are expected here tomorrow for what

:13:51. > :14:00.could be a classic as the sun sets on this year's World Cup. English

:14:01. > :14:04.teenager, Charlie hull shot the best round -- charley Hull shot the best

:14:05. > :14:11.round of the day at the Women's Open. She's just three shots behind

:14:12. > :14:14.the leader Park, of south Korea. England's Justin Rose is the joint

:14:15. > :14:19.leader at the Scottish Open ah, longside Scotland's Marc Warren. The

:14:20. > :14:22.pair are on ten under par with a one-shot lead ahead of tomorrow's

:14:23. > :14:26.final round. With less than two weeks to go to the Commonwealth

:14:27. > :14:28.Games in Glasgow, the athletics venue at Hampden Park has been

:14:29. > :14:32.staging the latest round of the Diamond League. As well as athletes

:14:33. > :14:37.fine tuning their performances, it gave the Commonwealth Games'

:14:38. > :14:41.organise ea chance to test out their procedures -- organisers'.

:14:42. > :14:45.Track stars at home and abroad, but on show for the crowd. Those who

:14:46. > :14:49.didn't make it into Hampden Park early were left in long queues

:14:50. > :14:55.outside. The tight security measures in place dictating the very slow

:14:56. > :14:59.pace. Inside, on the new track, things were moving faster.

:15:00. > :15:02.Paralympic Gold Medallist Johnny peacock was pipped in the men's T

:15:03. > :15:11.44. COMMENTATOR: So close! World Olympic

:15:12. > :15:19.champion David Rhodesia took the 800 metres. And what a battle in the

:15:20. > :15:24.women's 100, the Trinidadian just ahead of Shelley Ann Fraser Price.

:15:25. > :15:28.Inside, the crowd has been noisy and the new track has been given the

:15:29. > :15:33.thumbs up by the athletes. But outside w, just two weeks to go,

:15:34. > :15:41.there may be some Commonwealth concern over security.

:15:42. > :15:44.That's all from the BBC Sport Centre for now.

:15:45. > :15:48.That's it. You can see more on all of today's stories on the BBC News

:15:49. > :15:59.channel. From me, for now, on BBC One, goodbye.

:16:00. > :16:05.Hello. I suspect this will be quite a frustrating night for gardeners.

:16:06. > :16:08.If your garden is looking dry, there is rain around. But rain of varying

:16:09. > :16:12.amounts and intensities. Some of us will see quite a bit. It's wet in

:16:13. > :16:15.western Scotland at the moment. Thunder storms in eastern England.

:16:16. > :16:20.But parts of south-west England will see hardly any rain. There's coast

:16:21. > :16:21.and hill fog around and it's a muggy night as well,
