:00:19. > :00:24.Israel has resumed its military offensive in Gaza

:00:25. > :00:28.Eight more people are reported to have been killed this morning

:00:29. > :00:33.Palestinian militants have launched more rocket attacks on Israel.

:00:34. > :00:45.From Gaza our correspondent Chris Morris reports.

:00:46. > :00:52.Early this morning, the shelling resumed. Hamas had continued to fire

:00:53. > :00:59.rockets at Israel. And this was Israel's response. Heavy fire into

:01:00. > :01:05.districts all along this narrow strip of land. And while Israel

:01:06. > :01:10.insists that it's only targeting Hamas and its infrastructure, the

:01:11. > :01:17.vast majority of the dead and injured are Palestinian civilians.

:01:18. > :01:21.Already fresh casualties are arriving here at Gaza City's main

:01:22. > :01:25.hospital. These are victims of shelling in the eastern district.

:01:26. > :01:33.Any hopes of a peaceful holiday to mark the end of the Muslim holy

:01:34. > :01:38.month of Ramadan appear to be dashed. Hamas then announced another

:01:39. > :01:46.truce. Will it take hold? No-one can be sure. The devastation is already

:01:47. > :01:51.staggering. This was a northern town during the ceasefire yesterday. A

:01:52. > :01:56.huge crater caused by an air strike and nearby houses in ruins.

:01:57. > :02:03.TRANSLATION: What use is a truce to us now? They destroyed all our homes

:02:04. > :02:08.just before the ceasefire began. This is where it ends for too many

:02:09. > :02:13.people in Gaza. A burial without ceremony in a patch of waste ground.

:02:14. > :02:20.This man's body had been hidden beneath the rubble for seven days.

:02:21. > :02:23.On the makeshift headstone, they scrawl his name. Now, Gaza will be

:02:24. > :02:28.braced for much worse to come. Our correspondent Bethany Bell

:02:29. > :02:39.is in Jerusalem. Is it clear how Israel intends to go

:02:40. > :02:43.forward from now? The Israeli security cabinet is due to meet

:02:44. > :02:49.later today to discuss that very question. We understand that some

:02:50. > :02:53.ministers may want to broaden the Gaza operation while others may want

:02:54. > :03:00.to see the offensive going on as it is. The priority for the army is to

:03:01. > :03:04.destroy the network of cross-border tunnels through which Palestinian

:03:05. > :03:07.militants have been trying to get into Israel. Certainly, from what we

:03:08. > :03:13.are seeing at the moment, there doesn't seem to be much sign that

:03:14. > :03:17.the government is preparing to go along with the international

:03:18. > :03:21.pressure for a more long-term ceasefire. For now, as well, the

:03:22. > :03:26.people of Israel are strongly behind the army. They say they are

:03:27. > :03:29.concerned about the rocket fire, they are concerned about the

:03:30. > :03:31.continuing threat from the tunnels and they say it is the job of the

:03:32. > :03:35.army to protect Israel. The Prime Minister says he doesn't

:03:36. > :03:38.support any immediate move to strip Russia of the right to host

:03:39. > :03:45.the 2018 World Cup. Earlier the Deputy Prime Minister,

:03:46. > :03:47.Nick Clegg said it would be "unthinkable" for the tournament to

:03:48. > :03:51.be staged in Russia because of its Our political correspondent

:03:52. > :04:00.Ross Hawkins is here. Is there a split at the top of the

:04:01. > :04:08.Government? There is a difference of emphasis. At Number Ten, they are

:04:09. > :04:13.emphasising the fact that Nick Clegg said "if" - if it continued along

:04:14. > :04:17.the path it had been going along. Labour have a lot of ifs in their

:04:18. > :04:23.position - if Russia is proved responsible for the fate of Flight

:04:24. > :04:25.MH17, and if they continue to support separatists then they say

:04:26. > :04:29.there will be questions about this. It is worth remembering Nick Clegg

:04:30. > :04:32.has gone further than his colleagues before. He decided no Lib Dem

:04:33. > :04:37.Minister would attend the Winter Olympics in Sochi in protest about

:04:38. > :04:41.Russian anti-gay legislation and certainly Liberal Democrats will

:04:42. > :04:45.hope that amid the complexity of talk about sanctions and diplomacy,

:04:46. > :04:47.this would be a simple threat that the public, that the Russians and

:04:48. > :04:51.the world could easily understand. The Labour leader Ed Miliband has

:04:52. > :04:53.said the public should have their own version

:04:54. > :04:55.of Prime Minister's Questions. MPs currently put questions to

:04:56. > :04:59.the Prime Minister on a Wednesday. Mr Miliband says voters should be

:05:00. > :05:02.allowed to do the same, Our political correspondent

:05:03. > :05:13.Adam Fleming reports. It's got insults... The right

:05:14. > :05:20.honourable gentleman is acting like a con man. Unlike him, Lady Thatcher

:05:21. > :05:25.won the general election! It's got questions. Has he ever had a

:05:26. > :05:29.conversation with Lynton Crosby about plain cigarette packaging...

:05:30. > :05:32.And sometimes answers. He's never lobbied me on anything. The Labour

:05:33. > :05:39.Leader says PMQs is missing something. The public. We need a

:05:40. > :05:43.public question time where regularly the Prime Minister submits himself

:05:44. > :05:48.or herself to questioning from members of the public in the Palace

:05:49. > :05:53.of Westminster on Wednesdays, so that - why is that important? I want

:05:54. > :05:58.to let the public in to our politics! Westminster is a

:05:59. > :06:02.traditional place. So it is unlikely we will see ordinary voters sitting

:06:03. > :06:06.on the benches. PMQs will take place over there in Westminster Hall where

:06:07. > :06:10.the Commons has a lesser known sister chamber. Would you be first

:06:11. > :06:16.in the queue if PMQs happened? I would. I have lots of questions. If

:06:17. > :06:25.you could get a ticket for this PMQs, what would you ask? Oh, that's

:06:26. > :06:31.a good question! Some polling experts believe the public cares

:06:32. > :06:35.most about what politicians do. Voters really want the economy to

:06:36. > :06:39.function, crime to be tackled, immigration to be tackled, decent

:06:40. > :06:44.schools and hospitals. They say they want to be involved, but what they

:06:45. > :06:48.want is for these things to go well. Number Ten said the Prime Minister

:06:49. > :06:52.already faces voters in regular question and answer sessions but he

:06:53. > :07:00.is open to ways of getting the public more involved in politics.

:07:01. > :07:02.At the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow there are 24 gold medals

:07:03. > :07:05.The first gold of the day went to Australia's Michael

:07:06. > :07:09.Our sports correspondent Natalie Pirks rounds up the day so far.

:07:10. > :07:14.Her report does contain some flash photography from the start.

:07:15. > :07:22.With Usain Bolt in town, today it was a marathon not a sprint that

:07:23. > :07:26.started off the athletics. The 25 men were out first and despite

:07:27. > :07:40.missing some major stars, there were still some great stories, and when

:07:41. > :07:44.the women went out, there were seven home nation athletes competing. This

:07:45. > :07:51.is the biggest spectator weekend of the Games, one of three free events

:07:52. > :07:58.here and big crowds are expected to pack the finish line. With a grimace

:07:59. > :08:02.on his face, Michael Shelley, the Commonwealth silver medallist from

:08:03. > :08:07.Delhi, kicked on to claim gold and a new personal best. In the women's

:08:08. > :08:18.race, Flomena Cheyech Daniel added Commonwealth gold to her Paris

:08:19. > :08:24.marathon win. There were smiles all round for England's

:08:25. > :08:29.marathon win. There were smiles all Kerwood, she won gold. Great news

:08:30. > :08:31.for Scotland in the men's pair lawns bowls, they came back to beat

:08:32. > :08:35.England 16-15. Cricket -

:08:36. > :08:37.and England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and chose to bat

:08:38. > :08:40.in the Third Test against India He's under pressure to perform

:08:41. > :08:46.after facing calls to stand down, as our sports correspondent

:08:47. > :09:00.Joe Wilson reports. Ready or not, here it comes. 11.00am

:09:01. > :09:05.when the umpire says it starts - it starts! So facing up, Alastair Cook

:09:06. > :09:14.under intense scrutiny, about a metre short of a first-ball nought.

:09:15. > :09:19.Cook on 15, there was the tentative push. Where was the catch? If this

:09:20. > :09:23.was to be Cook's great recovery, India were giving him every

:09:24. > :09:27.opportunity. Starting a Test Match on a Sunday, not to everyone's

:09:28. > :09:32.taste, at least it was sunny! Cook was starting to look good,

:09:33. > :09:39.seriously. Advised by England's captains of the recent past to take

:09:40. > :09:45.a break, Cook opts to battle. England were past 50 and starting to

:09:46. > :09:48.feel at ease when Sam Robson fell. Robson could use some runs, too. But

:09:49. > :09:50.Cook will resume 48 not out, morning which may have changed the

:09:51. > :09:59.course of his career. The next news on BBC One is at

:10:00. > :10:16.4.50pm. Bye for now. Thank you for joining me. It is time

:10:17. > :10:20.to have a look at what Mother Nature has up her sleeve this week.
