:00:00. > :00:08.President Obama warns of no quick fix in Iraq and hints at more US

:00:09. > :00:12.air strikes against Islamist militants.

:00:13. > :00:16.Some aid reaches thousands of Iraqis stranded in mountains in the north

:00:17. > :00:24.I do not think we are going to solve this problem in weeks.

:00:25. > :00:30.I think this is going to take some time.

:00:31. > :00:40.Tens of thousands march in London in protest at Israel's actions in Gaza.

:00:41. > :00:43.England trounce India in the fourth Test to go one-up with

:00:44. > :01:07.President Obama has said halting the advance of Islamist militants

:01:08. > :01:11.in Iraq will take some time and he's hinted at more US airstrikes.

:01:12. > :01:14.Britain is involved in the humanitarian effort.

:01:15. > :01:17.It's sent two RAF cargo planes to deliver supplies to thousands

:01:18. > :01:21.of people from the minority Yazidi community.

:01:22. > :01:29.They have fled into mountains near Sinjar, in the north of the country,

:01:30. > :01:32.to escape forces of the Islamic State, which was known as Isis.

:01:33. > :01:34.Militant fighters have already taken the Christian town of Qaraqosh

:01:35. > :01:39.America's already carried out air strikes against the Islamic

:01:40. > :01:48.From Washington, David Willis reports.

:01:49. > :01:56.America's first military involvement in Iraq in more three yours. Fighter

:01:57. > :02:02.jets dropped laser-guided bombs seeking to halt the advance of

:02:03. > :02:06.Islamist militants bearing down on a Kurdish capital. American citizens

:02:07. > :02:11.are based there and the rebels' advance court the White House by

:02:12. > :02:19.surprise. There is no doubt that their movement over the last several

:02:20. > :02:23.months has been more rapid. More rapid than the intelligence

:02:24. > :02:29.estimates. And I think the expectations of policymakers in and

:02:30. > :02:36.outside of Iraq. The militants' advance has also created a

:02:37. > :02:41.humanitarian crisis of almost unimaginable proportions. Footage of

:02:42. > :02:45.aid workers delivering food and water shows the helicopter

:02:46. > :02:50.surrounded by hundreds of people. Stranded on a mountainside for most

:02:51. > :02:55.a week. The lucky ones, including this young man, were plucked to

:02:56. > :02:57.safety, but thousands of members of the minority Yazidi community

:02:58. > :03:05.remained there after being chased from their homes by the militants.

:03:06. > :03:10.TRANSLATION: There is nothing around us. There is no supplies, no

:03:11. > :03:16.housing. Everything is terrible. The food and water is very bad. Everyday

:03:17. > :03:23.we have seen families of hunger. I think we can only hold out for two

:03:24. > :03:26.more days. American aid has arrived. Supplies parachuted onto

:03:27. > :03:30.the barren mountain top and British cargo planes are also on the way.

:03:31. > :03:37.The challenge is getting the people there to safety all the time the

:03:38. > :03:41.militants lie in wait down below. We are looking at how to support this

:03:42. > :03:46.group of people and get them off that mountain and how we are going

:03:47. > :03:50.to facilitate their exit from what is a completely unacceptable

:03:51. > :03:52.situation. There are dropping supplies is a short-term solution

:03:53. > :03:58.but that is not a long-term solution. The advance has also seen

:03:59. > :04:14.them taking control of a key piece of infrastructure, that flag flies

:04:15. > :04:17.over the morsel -- Mosul dam. President Obama is preparing baby

:04:18. > :04:24.ball for another protracted arrangement in Iraq. -- the people.

:04:25. > :04:27.He said it would depend on a new government in Iraq and the Iraqi

:04:28. > :04:33.security services raising their game. The president left today for a

:04:34. > :04:38.two-week family holiday in Massachusetts, given the pace of

:04:39. > :04:42.events overseas it may not be as relaxing as he would have hoped.

:04:43. > :04:50.Our political correspondent Iain Watson is in Downing Street.

:04:51. > :04:56.President Obama and David Cameron have been talking about next steps

:04:57. > :05:03.to help those Iraqis. What have them I been saying? David Cameron still

:05:04. > :05:06.on holiday. The two men spoke earlier and agreed that the main

:05:07. > :05:12.priority was to get vital supplies to people trapped in the mountains.

:05:13. > :05:15.The focus was very much on humanitarian aid and the two RAF

:05:16. > :05:20.planes are in the area tonight and will be dropping water in reusable

:05:21. > :05:25.containers, not dropping bombs because despite some reports there

:05:26. > :05:30.is no intention for Britain to take part in the current round of US air

:05:31. > :05:35.strikes. The president and the Prime Minister agreed that the drops are

:05:36. > :05:40.only a temporary solution and said that a way has to be found to get

:05:41. > :05:44.these people to safety. If the Iraqi forces cannot deliver that, at that

:05:45. > :05:49.stage and American and British officials will discuss further

:05:50. > :05:53.limited military options but it is just a year since David Cameron was

:05:54. > :05:58.defeated by MPs over plans to get swift air strikes under way in

:05:59. > :06:02.Syria, so well he wants to see progress on the humanitarian effort,

:06:03. > :06:06.elsewhere he is going to proceed with extreme caution.

:06:07. > :06:08.Palestinian health officials say at least seven people have been

:06:09. > :06:10.killed in further Israeli air strikes on Gaza.

:06:11. > :06:14.Israel's resumed its bombardment after a three day cease-fire ended.

:06:15. > :06:17.Palestinian militants, meanwhile, have fired more rockets

:06:18. > :06:24.Our Chief International Correspondent Lyse Doucet is

:06:25. > :06:36.The two sides were negotiating. What hope for those talks? They have not

:06:37. > :06:48.been negotiating for the past 24 hours. The Israeli delegation making

:06:49. > :06:52.it clear that they will not negotiate under rocket fire. We have

:06:53. > :06:58.had a warning from the Palestinian delegation saying that if is real

:06:59. > :07:01.does not agree to resume truce talks unconditionally and the Palestinian

:07:02. > :07:06.delegation would also leave, which would be a disaster for what is

:07:07. > :07:13.already a very fragile process. We are hearing a hardening position

:07:14. > :07:17.from Hamas, a senior official told us that there is no agreement on any

:07:18. > :07:25.of the issues, whether it is easing a blockade or -- and warned that the

:07:26. > :07:33.talks could not drag on indefinitely. Stop there will be

:07:34. > :07:37.concerned there would be an escalation.

:07:38. > :07:39.In London, tens of thousands of people took

:07:40. > :07:41.part in a demonstration in protest against Israel's actions in Gaza.

:07:42. > :07:43.The march came as a British emergency appeal

:07:44. > :07:46.for Gaza said it had raised ?4.5 million in under 24 hours.

:07:47. > :07:53.Anger on the streets of London over a conflict more than

:07:54. > :07:57.2000 miles away in which the UK is not even involved.

:07:58. > :08:00.They came to express their support for the people of Gaza.

:08:01. > :08:04.And to condemn what they claim is Israeli aggression.

:08:05. > :08:06.We are passionate about the illegal occupation

:08:07. > :08:11.We are passionate about the 400 children who have been murdered and

:08:12. > :08:15.the British and the whole world are standing back and doing nothing.

:08:16. > :08:19.Israel is butchering the Palestinians.

:08:20. > :08:21.The Palestinians are being driven out of their homes.

:08:22. > :08:25.They have been massacred in their thousands.

:08:26. > :08:27.As is clearly on display here, the conflict

:08:28. > :08:33.in Gaza is inflaming passions but there are two sides of the dispute.

:08:34. > :08:36.Supporters of the Israeli policy might not have taken to the streets

:08:37. > :08:41.today but they are equally convinced that their cause is the just one.

:08:42. > :08:44.Israel claims the demonstrators are failing to recognise the role

:08:45. > :08:50.We do not have a problem with the protest per se.

:08:51. > :08:52.We have a problem with people expressing

:08:53. > :08:57.support for a terrorist organisation which is designated in the UK.

:08:58. > :09:01.It is the key obstacle to the prosperity of Gaza.

:09:02. > :09:08.British people of all colours and of all political parties stand in

:09:09. > :09:16.In Hyde Park this afternoon speaker after speaker laid

:09:17. > :09:22.the blame firmly on Israel to the approval of the crowd.

:09:23. > :09:25.As in the Middle East itself, opinions here in the UK

:09:26. > :09:29.on the crisis in Gaza seemed firmly entrenched.

:09:30. > :09:36.John Brain, BBC News, central London.

:09:37. > :09:39.There are warnings of more wet and windy weather early tomorrow

:09:40. > :09:42.as the remnants of Hurricane Bertha are forecast to hit the UK.

:09:43. > :09:44.In Cambridgeshire, authorities have been clearing up after torrential

:09:45. > :09:50.rain yesterday caused power cuts and a riverbank to collapse.

:09:51. > :09:52.The West African country of Guinea is closing its borders with

:09:53. > :09:55.Sierra Leone and Liberia to try to halt the spread of Ebola.

:09:56. > :09:59.Nearly 1,000 people in West Africa have died this year from the virus.

:10:00. > :10:02.Our correspondent Will Ross reports from Nigeria, where extra measures

:10:03. > :10:10.With Ebola now declared a national emergency in Nigeria the authorities

:10:11. > :10:14.are calling for extra effort to stop the spread of the deadly virus

:10:15. > :10:20.People have been told to avoid large gatherings but that is easier said

:10:21. > :10:27.More than ?6.5 million have been released to boost

:10:28. > :10:36.Approved ongoing steps to contain the virus such

:10:37. > :10:43.as the establishment of additional isolation centres, case management,

:10:44. > :10:47.deployment of additional personnel, screening at borders and procurement

:10:48. > :10:54.By calling it a national emergency the Nigerian

:10:55. > :10:57.authorities are really saying, let's get ready in case the Ebola

:10:58. > :11:02.virus spreads but it is not the same as declaring a state of emergency

:11:03. > :11:08.There, some freedoms have been suspended.

:11:09. > :11:14.The soldiers stop people moving in or out of the badly hit areas.

:11:15. > :11:18.The outbreak began in a remote area of Guinea in March.

:11:19. > :11:22.It took health experts weeks to realise it was Ebola.

:11:23. > :11:25.The virus quickly spread to neighbouring Liberia and

:11:26. > :11:30.Today, somewhat belatedly, Guinea announced the closure of

:11:31. > :11:37.There have also been two recent deaths in Nigeria where more than

:11:38. > :11:44.With close to 1000 deaths in West Africa, this is the world's

:11:45. > :11:50.The fight against Ebola has been undermined

:11:51. > :11:54.by a lack of education and suspicion of foreign health workers.

:11:55. > :12:01.With all the sport, here's Karthi Gnanasegaram

:12:02. > :12:08.England's cricketers are celebrating beating India by an innings

:12:09. > :12:11.and 54 runs with two days to spare in the fourth Test at Old Trafford.

:12:12. > :12:14.The victory is all the more impressive as it completes

:12:15. > :12:16.a turnaround by a team heavily defeated and criticised after

:12:17. > :12:19.the second Test, and puts England 2-1 up in the five match series.

:12:20. > :12:27.Joe Wilson reports from Old Trafford.

:12:28. > :12:37.Special guests at Old Trafford on Saturday, the sun, not expected for

:12:38. > :12:42.the rest of the match. Joe Root and Joss Butler built a partnership of

:12:43. > :12:49.134. Batting looked easy. It never is. Stuart Broad, somehow it

:12:50. > :12:55.squeezed between the grill and the peak of his helmet. It was stuck

:12:56. > :13:02.inside where it mingled with light. England came out to ball again. 215

:13:03. > :13:08.ahead, but without Stuart Broad, so who would take the wickets? Chris

:13:09. > :13:23.walks was picked ahead of other strong candidates. LBW? Yes.

:13:24. > :13:30.Pujara's face turned to stone. Anderson struck. Remember this began

:13:31. > :13:40.with India's failed appeal to get Anderson band. The match was

:13:41. > :13:45.unravelling. It was as if the site had gone. They had been fighting the

:13:46. > :13:51.Jimmy Anderson Battle of the pitch for the past few weeks and forgot to

:13:52. > :13:56.fight on the pitch. England had bowled India out in 43 overs. The
