:00:00. > :00:00.One man has died, and many are treated in hospital,

:00:07. > :00:11.after a shipping container with 35 immigrants is discovered in Essex.

:00:12. > :00:15.Staff at Tilbury were alerted by banging and screaming.

:00:16. > :00:19.It is thought all the migrants are from the Indian subcontinent.

:00:20. > :00:22.The United States conducts further air strikes

:00:23. > :00:28.as more details emerge of a massacre of Yazidis.

:00:29. > :00:31.Scotland's First Minister describes as foolish and offensive

:00:32. > :00:34.remarks made by the Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott,

:00:35. > :01:01.And England build a commanding lead in the final test against India.

:01:02. > :01:05.Survivors found in a shipping container at Tilbury Docks in Essex

:01:06. > :01:11.One man died, and police have launched a homicide investigation.

:01:12. > :01:16.35 people, including some children, were found inside the container.

:01:17. > :01:18.The discovery was made early this morning when the ship,

:01:19. > :01:22.which had sailed from Zeebrugge in Belgium, was being unloaded

:01:23. > :01:26.and staff heard banging and screaming inside the container.

:01:27. > :01:33.Our correspondent Daniel Boettcher is at Tilbury now.

:01:34. > :01:41.Daniel. Ambulances arrived here within

:01:42. > :01:45.minutes of the first intimation that people had been found inside a

:01:46. > :01:49.shipping container, the priority was to make sure they got medical

:01:50. > :01:50.attention, but throughout the day the focus has shifted to the police

:01:51. > :01:52.inquiry itself. Behind the gates at the port

:01:53. > :01:54.of Tilbury, a crime scene and investigation

:01:55. > :01:57.into how one man died, were found suffering

:01:58. > :02:02.from dehydration and hypothermia Police have described them

:02:03. > :02:07.as victims of people trafficking. They were discovered

:02:08. > :02:09.when this ship was being unloaded By the time they were found, they

:02:10. > :02:15.were desperate to attract attention. Members of staff who were starting

:02:16. > :02:21.to dismantle the cargo and unload, heard screaming and banging noises,

:02:22. > :02:29.so that started to raise the alert. Staff at the port very quickly

:02:30. > :02:35.breached the container door and found these 35 people

:02:36. > :02:40.contained within. After assessment

:02:41. > :02:42.and initial treatment, they were taken to three hospitals,

:02:43. > :02:45.the largest number here to Basildon, Police say they believe they are

:02:46. > :02:50.from the Indian subcontinent, but until they can be interviewed

:02:51. > :02:53.through interpreters, they won't know

:02:54. > :02:56.where their journey began, and it's not clear how they came

:02:57. > :03:00.to be inside a shipping container. The conditions were very difficult,

:03:01. > :03:04.I can't comment on how much room there was in there

:03:05. > :03:07.compared to the number of people, we believe they were at least

:03:08. > :03:12.12 hours in the container. Ambulances remained at the port

:03:13. > :03:15.for much of the day as other containers from the ship

:03:16. > :03:18.was searched as a precaution, A few of those being treated in

:03:19. > :03:23.hospital may be kept in overnight for observation, but police say

:03:24. > :03:27.most are recovering well. They are being detained

:03:28. > :03:29.under immigration powers and will be moved

:03:30. > :03:32.to a reception centre. Police are working

:03:33. > :03:35.with the UK Border Force and with their counterparts

:03:36. > :03:37.in Belgium and say the inquiry will span

:03:38. > :03:41.a number of countries. Belgian authorities believe

:03:42. > :03:48.they have identified the lorry which delivered the container

:03:49. > :03:51.to Zeebrugge from CCTV footage. But it is not yet known

:03:52. > :03:54.where the lorry came from. Duncan Crawford sent

:03:55. > :03:59.this report from Zeebrugge. today police inspected the site

:04:00. > :04:06.and scoured CCTV for clues. Officers believe

:04:07. > :04:09.they've identified the lorry The national police

:04:10. > :04:15.are checking all the images, and my colleagues

:04:16. > :04:18.are very, very hopeful that we find the truck

:04:19. > :04:22.who put the container in Zeebrugge. I think it's very important that we

:04:23. > :04:26.have identification of that truck, With thousands of containers

:04:27. > :04:32.destined for the UK, this is one of a number

:04:33. > :04:34.of European ports this British lorry driver told me

:04:35. > :04:41.the port checks for stowaways We check for CO2, and then

:04:42. > :04:51.we have to check the trailer going through the scanner,

:04:52. > :04:53.if we're going back self-drive. If we don't take it

:04:54. > :04:55.through the scanner, the actual dock truck drivers,

:04:56. > :04:58.they take it through the scanner before it gets on the ferry

:04:59. > :05:01.back to England. There are many routes migrants

:05:02. > :05:04.can take to enter the UK illegally, including ferry ports like Calais

:05:05. > :05:08.and cargo ports such as Zeebrugge. The numbers trying to get in

:05:09. > :05:12.have risen significantly. Two years ago, British authorities

:05:13. > :05:15.detected 11,000 people Last year,

:05:16. > :05:22.that number soared to 18,000. Lorries have been arriving here and

:05:23. > :05:26.dropping off their cargo all day. Officials here say they inspect

:05:27. > :05:31.every seal on all the containers. They only look inside if

:05:32. > :05:37.they notice something suspicious. We don't know how

:05:38. > :05:39.these people in the container or indeed what drove them to risk

:05:40. > :05:45.their lives in the first place. Duncan Crawford, BBC News,

:05:46. > :05:50.Zeebrugge. American warplanes are carrying out

:05:51. > :05:52.further air strikes against Islamic extremists

:05:53. > :05:55.in northern Iraq to help Iraqi forces retake a strategic dam

:05:56. > :05:59.near the city of Mosul. The dam was captured by Islamic

:06:00. > :06:03.State fighters earlier this month. They have been accused

:06:04. > :06:07.of murdering 80 men Caroline Wyatt reports

:06:08. > :06:14.from northern Iraq. In this bleak encampment,

:06:15. > :06:16.relief at survival The Yazidi who escaped with

:06:17. > :06:23.their lives from the mountains say help has come too late

:06:24. > :06:27.to save the village of Kocho, and the men massacred

:06:28. > :06:31.by the militants. He left the town two weeks ago,

:06:32. > :06:36.before it was taken. he learned his wife and daughters

:06:37. > :06:40.were in prison TRANSLATION: Yesterday, 12 o'clock,

:06:41. > :06:48.they just gathered them and killed more than 300 husbands

:06:49. > :06:58.and took the rest with them. The only thing that I ask is just

:06:59. > :07:04.to rescue what is left from them, I'm the only survivor in my family,

:07:05. > :07:20.which was 50 guys. People here are all too aware

:07:21. > :07:23.of what's been happening in Kocho, they've already lost friends

:07:24. > :07:25.and family to the fighters

:07:26. > :07:27.of the Islamic State. but the young men of fighting age

:07:28. > :07:31.want weapons so they can go back

:07:32. > :07:36.and defend their people. We killed all

:07:37. > :07:38.and take their woman... British MP Rory Stewart

:07:39. > :07:42.hears some of their anger on a visit to find out

:07:43. > :07:45.what's needed here. He says the UK must help

:07:46. > :07:48.arm the Kurdish fighters. This is the Tigris, this is

:07:49. > :07:51.the border with the Islamic State. These people were essentially driven

:07:52. > :07:53.out of their villages and the Peshmerga that were meant

:07:54. > :07:59.to be defending them fell back. because they simply don't feel

:08:00. > :08:03.they have the weapons, they're terrified

:08:04. > :08:08.because they see the Islamic State driving around in big armoured

:08:09. > :08:11.vehicles, firing artillery at them. At the least, we need to provide

:08:12. > :08:14.the kind of military equipment to allow them to defend

:08:15. > :08:17.these existing populations. the refugees can just make out

:08:18. > :08:21.the American warplanes overhead, supporting Kurdish forces

:08:22. > :08:24.trying to retake the Mosul dam. but there is at last hope

:08:25. > :08:30.that it can be won back. Caroline Wyatt, BBC News,

:08:31. > :08:35.in Dohuk province. The Governor of the American state

:08:36. > :08:37.of Missouri has declared a state of emergency

:08:38. > :08:41.in the St Louis suburb of Ferguson. Violent disturbances and looting

:08:42. > :08:43.have continued a week after police shot dead

:08:44. > :08:48.an unarmed black teenager. A curfew will begin at midnight

:08:49. > :08:53.local time and run for five hours. Scotland's First Minister,

:08:54. > :08:56.Alex Salmond, has described as offensive, hypocritical

:08:57. > :08:58.and foolish remarks made by the Australian

:08:59. > :09:01.Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, that people who would like

:09:02. > :09:08.to see the break-up of the UK were not the friends of justice

:09:09. > :09:11.or freedom. Lorna Gordon's report contains

:09:12. > :09:16.some flash photography. Tony Abbott - outspoken

:09:17. > :09:19.and at times controversial, and commenting on Scotland's

:09:20. > :09:22.referendum, he went further than any international politician

:09:23. > :09:25.has gone before. Speaking to a newspaper

:09:26. > :09:27.while in London, how the world would be helped

:09:28. > :09:32.by an independent Scotland, the people who would like to see

:09:33. > :09:35.the break-up of the United Kingdom are not the friends of justice,

:09:36. > :09:38.the friends of freedom. is campaigning hard

:09:39. > :09:42.in favour of independence. He pulled no punches,

:09:43. > :09:45.calling Mr Abbott's comments hypocritical in light of Australia's

:09:46. > :09:49.own independence and insulting. The independence process in Scotland

:09:50. > :09:52.is about freedom and justice. It is an examplar,

:09:53. > :09:56.a model of democratic conduct. And I'm not sure if Mr Abbott

:09:57. > :09:59.is aware of that, but he should familiarise himself

:10:00. > :10:01.with it before he makes

:10:02. > :10:03.what can only be described as offensive remarks

:10:04. > :10:06.to the Scottish people. The Australian Prime Minister is the

:10:07. > :10:09.latest in a line of world leaders to comment on the referendum,

:10:10. > :10:13.among them President Obama. ..Remains a strong, robust,

:10:14. > :10:17.united and effective partner. But while these interventions

:10:18. > :10:20.get plenty of attention, and Tony Abbott has gone further

:10:21. > :10:22.than most, it's not at all clear

:10:23. > :10:25.they have any impact on the way people here in Scotland

:10:26. > :10:28.will vote. around substantive issues,

:10:29. > :10:33.like the economy. Those out campaigning for the Union

:10:34. > :10:37.today played down the remarks. Well, Australians are

:10:38. > :10:39.famously direct, they say what they mean,

:10:40. > :10:42.and they mean what they say, But ultimately Scots will make

:10:43. > :10:46.our own decision, and most Scots know that we have

:10:47. > :10:50.the best of both worlds. Mr Abbott did say it was up to Scots

:10:51. > :10:53.to decide their future. He'll mark his first year in office

:10:54. > :10:56.on the 18th of September, the very same day voters

:10:57. > :11:00.in Scotland head to the polls. here's Karthi Gnanasegaram

:11:01. > :11:09.at the BBC Sport Centre. It is the opening weekend

:11:10. > :11:11.of the Premier League season, and today's results might not

:11:12. > :11:14.have been expected. Time to pop out of the room if you

:11:15. > :11:18.don't want to know what happened, as Match Of The Day

:11:19. > :11:21.follows soon on BBC One. Manchester United may have

:11:22. > :11:24.a new manager in Louis van Gaal, but they have the same opening-day

:11:25. > :11:27.result as their last campaign - Even four-time Major winner

:11:28. > :11:32.Rory McIlroy's appearance with the claret jug for winning

:11:33. > :11:35.the Open couldn't inspire his side. Ki Sung-Yeung and Gylfi Sigurdsson

:11:36. > :11:37.scored for the Welsh side. It is the first time

:11:38. > :11:40.United have lost at home on the first day of the season

:11:41. > :11:43.for more than 40 years. Arsenal left it very late

:11:44. > :11:46.to beat Crystal Palace, just two days

:11:47. > :11:50.before the season started. Aaron Ramsey scored

:11:51. > :11:52.in stoppage time to give Arsenal a 2-1

:11:53. > :11:56.opening-day victory. Leicester's first

:11:57. > :11:58.Premier League match in a decade Queens Park Rangers

:11:59. > :12:02.lost to Hull City. Mauricio Pochettino

:12:03. > :12:08.started his reign at Tottenham In the Scottish Premiership,

:12:09. > :12:14.Celtic ended Dundee United's unbeaten start to the season

:12:15. > :12:18.with an emphatic 6-1 victory. Jo Inge Berget with the fifth

:12:19. > :12:21.and sixth goals for Celtic in a powerful display

:12:22. > :12:27.by the champions. Elsewhere, Dundee drew 1-1

:12:28. > :12:29.with Partick Thistle. And there were wins for Hamilton,

:12:30. > :12:34.Inverness and Kilmarnock. At the European Athletics

:12:35. > :12:36.Championships in Zurich, Team GB are in second place

:12:37. > :12:39.behind France in the medal table Commonwealth Games silver medallist

:12:40. > :12:43.Eilidh Child Child held off Ukraine's

:12:44. > :12:48.fast-finishing Anna Titimets Fellow Scot Lynsey Sharp

:12:49. > :12:54.ran a personal best in 800m but couldn't retain

:12:55. > :12:56.her European crown, taking silver behind

:12:57. > :13:02.the Belarussian Marina Arzamasova. England's women have lost

:13:03. > :13:04.their first cricket match as a professional outfit,

:13:05. > :13:06.defeated by India. The visitors, playing their first

:13:07. > :13:10.Test match for eight years, chased down 181 to win at Wormsley

:13:11. > :13:15.in Buckinghamshire by six wickets. England and India now play

:13:16. > :13:20.three one-day internationals. Well, England's men

:13:21. > :13:22.have fared better, at the Oval in the final test

:13:23. > :13:31.against India after day two. Our sports correspondent Joe Wilson

:13:32. > :13:35.watched the action. The Oval is called the Oval

:13:36. > :13:37.for a reason. Sometimes when you speed things up,

:13:38. > :13:40.you reveal more. Sometimes the same happens

:13:41. > :13:42.when you slow things down. Sam Robson, a bit stuck,

:13:43. > :13:46.out in the second over of the day. Robson's future

:13:47. > :13:49.is a matter of conjecture. He reached 50 before lunch,

:13:50. > :13:54.with good fortune to follow. Could anything disturb

:13:55. > :13:58.Gary Ballance? Watch out, pigeons have

:13:59. > :14:00.their own flightpath. In contrast, India's bowling

:14:01. > :14:04.seemed predictable. There you go, boundary to Ballance,

:14:05. > :14:07.another 50, Gary? Now India contrived to keep Cook

:14:08. > :14:13.at the crease - edge, drop, let's see if we can do it again,

:14:14. > :14:17.how bowlers love that. England, 191-1,

:14:18. > :14:21.in the lead, in control. Then suddenly things changed,

:14:22. > :14:26.because India held catches. Ballance on 64 hit it straight

:14:27. > :14:33.to Pujara, who didn't flinch. Bell out quickly,

:14:34. > :14:37.followed by Moeen Ali, 229-5. England revelled in Joe Root's

:14:38. > :14:42.rediscovered stature. He's made a 50

:14:43. > :14:45.in every test of the series. Root 92 not out, England 237 ahead,

:14:46. > :14:51.which would seem to be out of sight. You can see more on all of today's

:14:52. > :15:23.stories on the BBC News Channel. Good evening. Heads up,

:15:24. > :15:25.holiday-makers across the UK, a cooler trend is likely to continue a

:15:26. > :15:27.crusty weather for the next few days cooler trend is likely to continue a

:15:28. > :15:31.crusty weather for the next courtesy of this area of low pressure with

:15:32. > :15:36.winds coming from the north-west, circulating around this low, plenty

:15:37. > :15:40.of showers. A week weather friends drift south and east across the UK

:15:41. > :15:43.through the night. For tomorrow, it looks as though we will continue

:15:44. > :15:49.with the blustery winds from the north-west, some rain around, but as

:15:50. > :15:51.that clears away, bright spells as well. We start with
