:00:23. > :00:26.David Cameron says Britain's "military prowess" will be needed to

:00:27. > :00:30.defeat the jihadist group Islamic State in Iraq.

:00:31. > :00:34.Writing in The Sunday Telegraph, the Prime Minister says

:00:35. > :00:37.a humanitarian response to the crisis there is not enough.

:00:38. > :00:39.He also warns militants could target Britain.

:00:40. > :00:46.Our Political Correspondent, Louise Stewart, reports.

:00:47. > :00:51.As the Islamic State's grip on parts of Iraq shows no

:00:52. > :00:56.As the Islamic State's grip on sign of listening the Prime Minister has

:00:57. > :01:01.stepped up his condemnation of the extremist group. He makes it clear

:01:02. > :01:07.that it is not just about fighting on the ground but also a battle

:01:08. > :01:18.against a poisonous ideology. He did not rule out military action.

:01:19. > :01:25.The fighting in Iraq may seem to be a problem many miles away from home

:01:26. > :01:31.but David Cameron's warning is stark that unless the terrorist movement

:01:32. > :01:35.can be tackled, in his own words, it will grow stronger until it can

:01:36. > :01:37.tackle the streets of Britain. In recent months there has been growing

:01:38. > :01:42.concern about the number of Britons who have gone to fight in Syria or

:01:43. > :01:48.Iraq and who may return home to commit acts of violence. David

:01:49. > :01:53.Cameron said Britain is tolerant but anyone promoting the Islamic State

:01:54. > :01:55.here would be arrested. The UK has already carried out military

:01:56. > :02:01.operations in Iraq including surveillance flights and delivering

:02:02. > :02:07.aid. Mr Cameron said Eadie monetary and response alone would not be

:02:08. > :02:13.enough. -- a humanitarian. While aid is needed to help, there has been

:02:14. > :02:17.strong criticism that the government has been slow to respond to the

:02:18. > :02:25.flight of -- plight of Christians in Iraq. What concerns me in -- and my

:02:26. > :02:29.colleagues is the apparent lack of reaction. We responded when people

:02:30. > :02:35.were trapped on the mountain but apart from that we have had silence

:02:36. > :02:40.while the situation has been deteriorating. David Cameron said he

:02:41. > :02:47.agreed that Britain should avoid sending armies to fight, but says he

:02:48. > :02:50.is determined to defend the UK's values and way of life.

:02:51. > :02:54.In Iraq, Kurdish troops, backed by US warplanes, say they

:02:55. > :03:02.have made progress in advancing towards the strategic Mosul dam held

:03:03. > :03:05.The dam provides water and electricity for much

:03:06. > :03:10.But as Jim Muir reports, from Irbil, Kurdish forces on the front line are

:03:11. > :03:14.Until just two weeks ago this highway was bustling with traffic

:03:15. > :03:18.between Islamist held Mosul and the Kurdistan capital Irbil.

:03:19. > :03:24.Now the road is cut the desolate area has become a battlefront.

:03:25. > :03:26.The lightning attack by the radicals thrusting towards

:03:27. > :03:31.Irbil sent refugees fleeing from this camp by the roadside.

:03:32. > :03:34.The Peshmerga have beefed up their positions.

:03:35. > :03:37.With American air power in support they are confident they

:03:38. > :03:41.can withhold more attacks but they would feel more confident

:03:42. > :03:49.This tank on the front line between Iraqi Kurdistan and positions held

:03:50. > :03:52.by the Islamic fighters of the so-called Islamic State over

:03:53. > :03:56.there, this tank is 53 years old and this is a point made repeatedly

:03:57. > :04:01.They are ready to sacrifice to defend what they regard

:04:02. > :04:05.as their homeland but the equipment they have got is really out of date,

:04:06. > :04:09.old Russian-made stuff which is not up to the task of facing the modern

:04:10. > :04:16.That is why the Kurdish leadership has officially requested European

:04:17. > :04:21.countries to join the Americans in providing more up-to-date weaponry.

:04:22. > :04:29.We need tanks, missiles, weapons, arms.

:04:30. > :04:35.We need mortars, night-vision goggles and night vision equipment

:04:36. > :04:47.And vehicles, Humvees, armoured vehicles.

:04:48. > :04:50.The Islamic State fighters seized some very advanced US supplied

:04:51. > :04:53.weaponry from the Iraqi army including GPS

:04:54. > :04:57.guided heavy artillery and armoured Humvees, all of which they know how

:04:58. > :05:02.That is why the Kurds are desperate to upgrade

:05:03. > :05:14.One person has been shot and critically injured

:05:15. > :05:18.in a night of further violence in the American city of St Louis.

:05:19. > :05:22.Police fired tear gas to break up crowds who ignored a curfew,

:05:23. > :05:26.following protests against the death of an unarmed black teenager.

:05:27. > :05:29.Officers said the latest shooting happened when police were confronted

:05:30. > :05:38.Protesters remained on the streets of Ferguson last

:05:39. > :05:43.You are violating a state imposed curfew.

:05:44. > :05:46.Police fired smoke bombs and tear gas at those who refused to

:05:47. > :05:55.Many protesters had gone home but the hardcore remained.

:05:56. > :06:01.The police sought to justify their response.

:06:02. > :06:04.Someone standing in the middle of the road with a handgun.

:06:05. > :06:16.Yes, I think that was a proper response tonight for public safety.

:06:17. > :06:19.Violence has flared for more than a week since a black teenager, Michael

:06:20. > :06:24.The circumstances of the shooting are still not clear but on Friday

:06:25. > :06:29.the police finally named the officer who shot the 18-year-old.

:06:30. > :06:33.Controversially, at the same time, they also released CCTV footage

:06:34. > :06:36.which they say showed Mr Brown carrying out a robbery

:06:37. > :06:48.That move further inflamed tensions between the community

:06:49. > :06:51.and the police in Missouri who are now facing an uphill struggle to

:06:52. > :06:58.Police in Essex are hoping to question more

:06:59. > :07:01.of the migrants found locked inside a shipping container in Essex.

:07:02. > :07:03.One man died and many of the remaining 34 needed hospital

:07:04. > :07:05.treatment after they were discovered yesterday morning.

:07:06. > :07:09.Let's go live now to Tilbury and our correspondent Andy Moore.

:07:10. > :07:22.We understand the questioning will happen at this cruise terminal

:07:23. > :07:29.behind me. A large police presence here. Border officials and senior

:07:30. > :07:35.police officers. We do not know if questioning has started. A large

:07:36. > :07:39.number of the migrants were taken to hospital last night suffering from

:07:40. > :07:42.dehydration and hypothermia. Two of them were seriously ill but most

:07:43. > :07:47.have made a good recovery overnight and are set to be questioned. There

:07:48. > :07:55.will be a long and difficult process. They have been traumatised

:07:56. > :08:10.by what happened. They come from the pin -- Punjab we believe. The police

:08:11. > :08:13.believe the victims are victims of human trafficking. Police have had

:08:14. > :08:20.some success in tracking the lorry. They believe it arrived on Friday

:08:21. > :08:22.evening, about an hour before the ship travelled overnight and then

:08:23. > :08:24.the victims were found buying and screaming from inside the container

:08:25. > :08:34.early yesterday morning. -- banging. 15 foreign tourists are believed to
