:00:08. > :00:14.It has been revealed that 35 migrants discovered in the shipping

:00:15. > :00:18.container in Essex are Sikhs from Afghanistan. Video footage shows the

:00:19. > :00:22.moment they were released after 12 hours in the dark. Many of them,

:00:23. > :00:26.women and children. There have been more US air strikes

:00:27. > :00:32.on Islamic State extremists in northern Iraq. Now David Cameron

:00:33. > :00:36.says Britain's military prowess may be needed if they are to be

:00:37. > :00:41.defeated. A man has been shot and is

:00:42. > :00:46.critically injured after more clashes in the US state of Missouri.

:00:47. > :00:50.And England thrash India in the fifth and final Test - to complete a

:00:51. > :01:11.3-1 series victory. A very good evening to you. Police

:01:12. > :01:16.say they believe 35 migrants found locked in a shipping container at

:01:17. > :01:21.Tilbury Docks in Essex came from Afghanistan and are of the Sikh

:01:22. > :01:24.faith. One man died and some of the others, including children, needed

:01:25. > :01:27.hospital treatment after being discovered yesterday morning. New

:01:28. > :01:31.video footage shows the moment they emerged from the container. They are

:01:32. > :01:34.thought to be the victims of trafficking.

:01:35. > :01:39.Our correspondent is at Tilbury Docks for us now. Andy?

:01:40. > :01:42.Throughout the day, police have been talking to the 30 migrants who are

:01:43. > :01:47.well enough to be interviewed. It will be a long and difficult

:01:48. > :01:50.process. Interpreters are needed and police are well aware these people

:01:51. > :01:57.have been through a traumatic experience. I should warn you about

:01:58. > :02:01.flashing images in this report. All day long members of the local Sikh

:02:02. > :02:05.community have come to the port terminal where the group is being

:02:06. > :02:08.interviewed. They have brought food, clothes and soft toys for the

:02:09. > :02:12.children. We know there are at least seven. Medical staff have been in

:02:13. > :02:17.attendance. The moment when the container was opened up yesterday

:02:18. > :02:21.morning and its cargo of terrified men, women and children spilt out

:02:22. > :02:26.into the open air. They had been inside for at least 12 hours. Police

:02:27. > :02:32.officers and border staff do their best to help. Some of the migrants

:02:33. > :02:36.are quite clearly injured. Others are traumatised and cold.

:02:37. > :02:42.The emergency services warm them up in whatever way they can. Police say

:02:43. > :02:45.the people being interviewed here have suffered a terrible ordeal.

:02:46. > :02:49.They say they are the victims of human trafficking. Their main

:02:50. > :02:53.concern at the moment is for their health and welfare. Human

:02:54. > :02:57.trafficking across Europe is an insidious and lucrative business. .

:02:58. > :03:00.This particular group, I understand they are from Afghanistan. They

:03:01. > :03:04.probably would have been transported overland from Afghanistan, up to one

:03:05. > :03:06.of the borders in the Balkans and possibly into the European Union

:03:07. > :03:12.that way. And then they would have paid for

:03:13. > :03:15.on-ward passenger up to wherever they were picked up and headed for

:03:16. > :03:19.the UK. There were fears at one stage there may be another container

:03:20. > :03:23.with more people on board, but that has been ruled out. Police across

:03:24. > :03:26.Europe are now doing their utmost to find the traffickers who put this

:03:27. > :03:33.group of migrants through an ordeal they were lucky to survive.

:03:34. > :03:40.David Cameron says Britain's military prowess will be needed to

:03:41. > :03:44.defeat the jihadist group Islamic State in Iraq. Writing in the Sunday

:03:45. > :03:48.Telegraph, the Prime Minister said, a human response to the crisis there

:03:49. > :03:52.is not enough. He also warned militants could target Britain. Our

:03:53. > :03:59.political correspondent has the story.

:04:00. > :04:02.Islamic State militants striking a triumphant pose and despite recent

:04:03. > :04:06.attacks on their positions, the Prime Minister says they represent a

:04:07. > :04:09.significant threat. Controlling thousands of Square Miles of

:04:10. > :04:15.territories spanning the border between northern Iraq and Syria. In

:04:16. > :04:19.a newspaper article, he declares: We need a firm security response,

:04:20. > :04:22.whether it is military action to go after the terrorists, or

:04:23. > :04:27.uncompromising action against terrorists at home.

:04:28. > :04:31.UK forces have within delivering aid to northern Iraq and an offer to

:04:32. > :04:33.provide Kurdish forces with equipment. For all the talk of

:04:34. > :04:37.military activity, the Prime Minister is making it clear there'll

:04:38. > :04:41.be no invading forces, no new Iraq war. The Prime Minister's rhetoric

:04:42. > :04:47.is powerful. That doesn't mean it will be followed by swift action.

:04:48. > :04:51.Instead, he is preparing us for a protracted struggle against Islamic

:04:52. > :04:55.extremism. One he says could last his whole political lifetime. He's

:04:56. > :05:03.been very clear, there's a home front in this battle too.

:05:04. > :05:06.I am... It is estimated as many as 500 British citizens are fighting

:05:07. > :05:11.alongside militants in Iraq. The Prime Minister says any show of

:05:12. > :05:15.support here in the UK, even displaying an Islamic State flag,

:05:16. > :05:18.could lead to arrest. Some critics say this will be count

:05:19. > :05:23.counterproductive. For now, he has the opposition's backing. He'll have

:05:24. > :05:25.my full support in working the law enforcement agencies w the police,

:05:26. > :05:30.with intelligence agencies to make sure that as best we possibly can,

:05:31. > :05:37.British agencies are tracking and assessing the nature of any threat

:05:38. > :05:39.to UK citizens. There has been criticism from leading figures in

:05:40. > :05:44.the Church of England. They are concerned the Government doesn't

:05:45. > :05:49.have a coherent strategy for trackling extremism. They say as a

:05:50. > :05:53.last resort Britain should offer asylum to those fleeing the

:05:54. > :05:58.conflict. We have a moral of obligation, given how we were

:05:59. > :06:03.involved in the war in Iraq a decade ago. Much of the mess is partly our

:06:04. > :06:07.doing. The Iraq war casts a long political shadow. The Prime Minister

:06:08. > :06:14.insists it won't stop him taking action to tackle extremism now.

:06:15. > :06:21.Well, in Iraq, Kurdish fighters say they have retaken large parts of a

:06:22. > :06:24.dam near Mosul. Captured by Islamic State extremisms. US planes and

:06:25. > :06:28.drones were involved in the operation. Humanitarian efforts are

:06:29. > :06:33.continuing, to help tens of thousands of people from the Yazidi

:06:34. > :06:41.minority, who have been forced from their homes by extremists. Our

:06:42. > :06:48.correspondent sent us this report. A whole people put to flight by the

:06:49. > :06:52.Islamic State. Exhausted, terrified - the Yazidis

:06:53. > :06:58.suffered many individual tragedies, as they fled in their thousands. At

:06:59. > :07:02.a hospital in Syria, we learned of one of the most heartbreaking

:07:03. > :07:07.stories. The little boy is disabled,

:07:08. > :07:12.paralysed down one side. He was found by Kurdish fighters,

:07:13. > :07:16.abandoned and dying in the desert. Doctors think he lay in 50 degrees

:07:17. > :07:24.heat, looking into the blazing sun for more than a day. His eyes dried

:07:25. > :07:28.out. The cornea is scorched and infected. No-one knows his name or

:07:29. > :07:32.where his parents are and no-one knows why he was left behind. Other

:07:33. > :07:37.refugees believe his mother no longer had the strength to carry him

:07:38. > :07:42.and had to make the awful choice - which child to safe.

:07:43. > :07:46.Islamic State gunmen started to shoot at people, says one refugee,

:07:47. > :07:51.giving me the commonly accepted version of events. The boy's mother

:07:52. > :07:57.panicked, she dropped him and just ran, so he was left behind.

:07:58. > :08:00.Over the border, in Iraq, American warplanes and drones carried out 14

:08:01. > :08:05.air strikes. This was to help ease the

:08:06. > :08:11.humanitarian crisis, said a US military spokesman and also to help

:08:12. > :08:17.the Kurdish ground forces. A Kurdish offensive is reported to

:08:18. > :08:21.have captured large parts of the Mosul dam today. It has been in the

:08:22. > :08:25.hands of the Islamic State for the past fortnight. This is a difficult

:08:26. > :08:29.fight, say the Kurds. We are not talking here about a

:08:30. > :08:37.bunch of amateur jihadists, who want to go to heaven. They have an

:08:38. > :08:40.agenda. They have an army, an army. They have money, finances, they have

:08:41. > :08:47.oil. They are controlling water resources. They are controlling the

:08:48. > :08:52.territory of two countries - Syria and Iraq. There are refugee camps

:08:53. > :08:56.spread across the whole region. Syria, Turkey, Lebanon and here in

:08:57. > :09:00.Iraq. Some of the camps like this one are starting to get an air of

:09:01. > :09:05.permanence about them. These people, Syrian Kurds, fled to

:09:06. > :09:09.Iraq two-and-a-half years ago. The jihadis were not powerful then, but

:09:10. > :09:13.they used the chaos of Syria's sift war to become stronger and stronger.

:09:14. > :09:18.Now they are using the fighting in Iraq to try and carve out their own

:09:19. > :09:23.Islamic caliphate - their own state, that they hope will make the borders

:09:24. > :09:29.between Iraq and Syria simply irrelevant. The jihadis are reported

:09:30. > :09:33.to be gaining more territory in northern Syria. For these and other

:09:34. > :09:39.refugees it may be a long wait before they can go home.

:09:40. > :09:46.A man has been shot and critically injured in more violence prompted by

:09:47. > :09:52.the killing of an unarmed black teenager in Missouri. It happened on

:09:53. > :09:57.the first night of the curfew, in Ferguson, in St Louis. These images

:09:58. > :10:02.are shocking many Americans. For some, it was a police force behaving

:10:03. > :10:08.like an invading army, in a small town in Missouri.

:10:09. > :10:14.Demonstrators were on the street, defying a curfew, calling not only

:10:15. > :10:22.for justice, but an end to police heavy-handedness.

:10:23. > :10:28.Police said they wouldn't fire tear gas, but as the night progressed,

:10:29. > :10:32.that is just what they did. In the chaos, there were shots fired

:10:33. > :10:39.and several people were arrested. Police say their response was

:10:40. > :10:44.proportionate. We have a victim who may lose a life. We had a subject in

:10:45. > :10:49.the middle of the road, with a handgun. We had a police car shot at

:10:50. > :10:54.tonight and yes, I think that was a proper response tonight.

:10:55. > :10:58.To maintain officers' safety and public safety. There's been a week

:10:59. > :11:01.of unrest since Michael Brown was shot dead by police. He was 18 and

:11:02. > :11:08.unarmed. Two days ago, just as tensions

:11:09. > :11:14.seemed to be lifting, police released CCTV footage which they say

:11:15. > :11:20.shows him acting aggressively and stealing cigars. They admit the

:11:21. > :11:24.officer who shot him multiple times had not known he was a robbery

:11:25. > :11:29.suspect. There have been calls from the police for the police -- from

:11:30. > :11:34.the President for the police here to act more responsibly. The community

:11:35. > :11:36.here feels nor antagonised and they are preparing for more confrontation

:11:37. > :11:42.tonight. Scotland's First Minister, Alex

:11:43. > :11:47.Salmond, has admitted he could have made his position on the future

:11:48. > :11:52.currency on an independent Scotland clearer during his recent TV debate.

:11:53. > :11:57.He said he wished he had explained that in more detail. He was pressed

:11:58. > :12:04.on the issue by Alistair Darling of the Better Together campaign. The

:12:05. > :12:09.next televised debate will be a week tomorrow. The Foreign Ministers of

:12:10. > :12:12.Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany have begun a meeting in Berlin to

:12:13. > :12:17.try and find ways of easing the situation in Ukraine. Today, trucks

:12:18. > :12:21.from a Russian convoy, sent by Moscow, to contain humanitarian aid,

:12:22. > :12:24.reached a border crossing, but were deemed not to have the necessary

:12:25. > :12:28.paperwork to be allowed through. Ukraine says the convoy is in fact a

:12:29. > :12:33.cover to smuggle in military supplies.

:12:34. > :12:38.In sport, England have beaten India by a hefty innings and 244 runs in

:12:39. > :12:42.the fifth and final Test to win the series 3-1. It completes a

:12:43. > :12:46.remarkable turn around for England's cricketers after a dismalstart to

:12:47. > :12:51.the summer. Joe of Wilson has all the details.

:12:52. > :12:56.Sunday at the Oval, the final verdict about to be delivered to

:12:57. > :13:04.India. England hit the ball around for an hour or so. Joe Root not out.

:13:05. > :13:08.India 338 behind. Murali Vijay out to James Anderson. We were not at

:13:09. > :13:11.lunch yet. Gautam Gambhir was desperate to get

:13:12. > :13:19.away from Anderson. The umpire thought it was close. It was out. It

:13:20. > :13:23.was 9-2. So, who wanted the wickets? Broad got Rahane. Only Dhoni stood

:13:24. > :13:30.up for India recently. This time he was gone for none. Four wickets for

:13:31. > :13:36.Jordan. When he got rid of Kohli it was 66. It England made this look so

:13:37. > :13:41.simple it is easy to forget where they were three weeks ago - behind

:13:42. > :13:46.in the series, without a win any where for almost a year. There'll be

:13:47. > :13:52.sterner tests to come next summer. Right now, they have earnt the right

:13:53. > :13:56.to feel good about themselves. Great Britain and Northern Ireland

:13:57. > :14:01.have enjoyed their best European athletics championships ever.

:14:02. > :14:11.Winning 12 gold. Mo Farah cruised to victory this in the 5,000 metres to

:14:12. > :14:16.claim his second gold in Zurich. And Greg Rutherford added the European

:14:17. > :14:21.gold to his Olympic and Commonwealth long jump titles.

:14:22. > :14:27.In football, Liverpool have begun their campaign with a 2-1 win at

:14:28. > :14:32.home to Southampton. Manchester City beat Newcastle 2-0. Goals from David

:14:33. > :14:38.Silva and this late finish from Sergio Aguero sealed all the points.

:14:39. > :14:44.There's more throughout the evening on the BBC News Channel and I will

:14:45. > :14:45.be back with the late news at
