:00:07. > :00:13.Kurdish forces in northern Iraq are closing in on a strategically

:00:14. > :00:18.important dam, seized by Islamist militants. The US has carried out

:00:19. > :00:22.air strikes near the dam, in support of the operation.

:00:23. > :00:27.David Cameron says Britain's military prowess will be needed to

:00:28. > :00:31.help defeat the extremists in Iraq. Also - police say migrants,

:00:32. > :00:36.including children, found in a shipping container in Essex, are

:00:37. > :00:40.Sikhs from Afghanistan. A man has been shot and is critically injured

:00:41. > :00:47.after more clashes in the US state of Missouri.

:00:48. > :00:52.England are the world champions! England have beaten Canada to win

:00:53. > :01:10.the women's Rugby World Cup for the first time in 20 years.

:01:11. > :01:16.A very good evening to you. Kurdish fighters in northern Iraq say they

:01:17. > :01:20.are close to taking back control of most of the area around the

:01:21. > :01:24.country's largest dam at Mosul. American warplanes were also

:01:25. > :01:27.involved in the operation. Their biggest since becoming involved in

:01:28. > :01:31.the conflict against Islamic State. Now the dam was seized by the

:01:32. > :01:36.radical Islamists earlier this month. It supplies much of the

:01:37. > :01:40.area's water and electricity and would cause devastating floods if it

:01:41. > :01:44.burst. Meanwhile, international humanitarian efforts are continuing

:01:45. > :01:48.to help tens of thousands of people from the Yazidi minority, who have

:01:49. > :01:53.been forced from their homes by the extremists. Paul Wood has travelled

:01:54. > :01:59.through northern Iraq and northern Syria and sent us this report.

:02:00. > :02:07.A whole people put to flight by the Islamic State.

:02:08. > :02:12.Exhausted, terrified - the Yazidis suffered many individual tragedies

:02:13. > :02:16.as they fled in their thousands. In a nearby hospital, we learned of

:02:17. > :02:22.one of the most heartbreaking stories. The little boy is disabled,

:02:23. > :02:28.paralysed down one side. He was found by Kurdish fighters, abandoned

:02:29. > :02:33.and dying in the desert. Doctors think he lie in 50 degrees heat,

:02:34. > :02:39.looking into the blazing sun for more than a day. His eyes dried out.

:02:40. > :02:43.His corneas are scorched and infected. No-one knows his name or

:02:44. > :02:47.where his parents are or why he was left behind. Other refugees believe

:02:48. > :02:55.his mother no longer had the strength to carry him. And had to

:02:56. > :03:03.make the awful choice. Which child to save. Islamic State started to

:03:04. > :03:10.fire at people. The boy's mother panicked, he says. She dropped him

:03:11. > :03:15.and just ran, so he was left behind. American warplanes and drones

:03:16. > :03:20.carried out 14 air strikes in northern Iraq today. This was to

:03:21. > :03:24.help ease the humanitarian crisis, said a US military spokesman and

:03:25. > :03:30.also to help the Kurdish ground forces. A Kurdish offensive is

:03:31. > :03:35.reported to have captured large parts of the Mosul dam today. It has

:03:36. > :03:41.been in the hands of the Islamic State for the past fortnight. This

:03:42. > :03:46.is a difficult fight, say the Kurds. They have an agenda. They have an

:03:47. > :03:51.army - a fully-blown army. They have money, finances, they have oil. They

:03:52. > :03:58.are controlling water resources. They are controlling the territory

:03:59. > :04:03.of two countries - Syria and Iraq. In northern Syria, the Islamic State

:04:04. > :04:07.is gaining more territory. They are taking it from other rebel groups in

:04:08. > :04:15.a new offensive. Syria's opposition has called for the US military to

:04:16. > :04:20.bomb here, just as they are doing in Iraq. There are refugee camps spread

:04:21. > :04:23.across the region. Syria, Turkey, Lebanon and here in Iraq and some of

:04:24. > :04:29.the camps, like this one, are starting to get an air of permanence

:04:30. > :04:35.about them. These people, Syrian Kurds fled to Iraq two-and-a-half

:04:36. > :04:40.years ago. The jihadis were not powerful then. They used the chaos

:04:41. > :04:43.of the civil war to become stronger and stronger. Now they are using the

:04:44. > :04:48.fighting in Iraq to try and carve out their own Islamic caliphate.

:04:49. > :04:52.Their own state which they hope will make the borders between Iraq and

:04:53. > :04:57.Syria simply irrelevant The Americans have been drawn back into

:04:58. > :05:02.Iraq. Air power alone will not decide this conflict. The refugees

:05:03. > :05:08.may have a long wait before they can go home.

:05:09. > :05:12.David Cameron says Britain's military prowess will be needed to

:05:13. > :05:16.help defeat Islamic State. Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, he said, a

:05:17. > :05:21.humanitarian response to the crisis is not enough. He also warned

:05:22. > :05:28.militants could target Britain. Our political correspondent has more.

:05:29. > :05:32.Islamic State militants striking a triumphant pose and despite their

:05:33. > :05:36.recent setbacks, the Prime Minister believes this represents a

:05:37. > :05:40.significant threat. Controlling thousands of Square Miles of

:05:41. > :05:42.territory, spanning the border between northern Iraq and Syria. In

:05:43. > :06:00.a newspaper article, he A Conservative MP from a Kurdish

:06:01. > :06:04.background has been visiting refugee camps in the region. He said despite

:06:05. > :06:08.the talk of military activity, the Prime Minister has no intention of

:06:09. > :06:14.launching another Iraq war. It is not in anyway suggesting that we

:06:15. > :06:19.need to put boots on the ground, to put British Armed Forces to fight

:06:20. > :06:26.this fight against the Islamic caliphate. I think it is right to

:06:27. > :06:31.remind the British people that left unchecked, the Islamic caliphate

:06:32. > :06:36.will spread across to Europe. So, any military response is likely

:06:37. > :06:40.to be targeted. UK forces have been used to deliver aid and weapons are

:06:41. > :06:44.on offer to Kurdish troops. The Prime Minister's rhetoric is

:06:45. > :06:49.powerful. That doesn't mean it will be followed by swift action.

:06:50. > :06:55.Instead, he is preparing us for a protracted struggle against Islamic

:06:56. > :06:58.extremism. One he says could last his political lifetime and he's been

:06:59. > :07:02.very clear there's a home front in this battle too.

:07:03. > :07:06.As many as 500 British citizens are essty mated to be fighting alongside

:07:07. > :07:12.militants in Iraq. The Prime Minister says any show of support

:07:13. > :07:17.here, even displaying an Islamic State flag, would lead to arrest.

:07:18. > :07:22.Labour argue he should do more to tackle the rise of extremism in the

:07:23. > :07:25.Middle East. That response is most effectively dealt with this the

:07:26. > :07:30.region. That is why we should talk to the Turkish, to the Kurdishes, to

:07:31. > :07:35.the Jordanians about what efforts our allies can take to try and repel

:07:36. > :07:40.the advance of ISIS. The Iraq war still casts a long political shadow.

:07:41. > :07:47.But the Prime Minister insists it will not take him taking action to

:07:48. > :07:50.tackle the extremism now. Our security correspondent is here.

:07:51. > :07:53.These are strong words from the Prime Minister about the threat

:07:54. > :07:57.posed by Islamic State. What has prompted his comments? I think this

:07:58. > :08:00.is the net result of months of advice that the Prime Minister's

:08:01. > :08:03.been getting from a number of people, from the Foreign Office,

:08:04. > :08:08.from his national security adviser, from SIS - the Secret Intelligence

:08:09. > :08:13.Service, from MI6, from MI5, the police. All of whom have said for a

:08:14. > :08:17.time, this is a growing threat - the Islamic State. What changed in the

:08:18. > :08:20.last two months is that it has turned from being a localised,

:08:21. > :08:24.relatively localised militia, yet another part of the complicated

:08:25. > :08:29.Middle East picture, into an army - a miniature state. And that, I

:08:30. > :08:34.think, has been a wake-up call for a lot of people. Now the threat of

:08:35. > :08:38.home-grown terrorism, or blowback, has existed for three years, for as

:08:39. > :08:43.long as people started to volunteer to join groups in Syria, the MI5 and

:08:44. > :08:46.the police and others have warned there is a risk that a small

:08:47. > :08:49.minority would come back to this country and want to carry out

:08:50. > :08:54.something here. The problem is it's not just people - it is the ideology

:08:55. > :09:01.itself. That is really the thread that runs through this piece he's

:09:02. > :09:04.written. It is this violent ideology that is most concerning people.

:09:05. > :09:11.Plus, of course, there is the fact that the more land they take over,

:09:12. > :09:15.the more dams, the more hydroelect trisry plants - the money they get,

:09:16. > :09:19.the more they are attractive to other volunteers from around the

:09:20. > :09:25.world. The more they are likely to be a launch pad, including Britain's

:09:26. > :09:29.allies. Many thanks. Police say they believe 35 migrants

:09:30. > :09:33.found locked in a shipping container at Tilbury Docks in Essex came from

:09:34. > :09:38.Afghanistan and they are of the Sikh faith. One man died and some others,

:09:39. > :09:42.including children, needed hospital treatment, after being discovered

:09:43. > :09:47.yesterday morning. New video footage shows the moment they emerged from

:09:48. > :09:51.the container. They are thought to be the victim of trafficking. This

:09:52. > :09:55.report contains flashing images from the very start. Breathing fresh air

:09:56. > :10:00.at last. This video shows the scene shortly after the container was

:10:01. > :10:04.opened. Some people are being led away, whilst others are being helped

:10:05. > :10:08.out of the container at the back. One man is clearly struggling to

:10:09. > :10:12.breathe. There are many children among the group. They are

:10:13. > :10:17.traumatised and cold. Emergency workers do their best to help.

:10:18. > :10:22.Today, the local Sikh community delivered food, clothes and even a

:10:23. > :10:25.teddy bear to the port terminal building where the migrants were

:10:26. > :10:29.being held. Police say the people being interviewed here have suffered

:10:30. > :10:32.a terrible ordeal. They say they are the victims of human trafficking and

:10:33. > :10:38.their main concern at the moment is for their health and welfare.

:10:39. > :10:42.A total of 34 people were taken to hospital yesterday suffering from

:10:43. > :10:48.hypothermia and dehydration. They range from one to 72.

:10:49. > :10:52.Human trafficking across Europe is an insidious and lucrative business.

:10:53. > :10:56.This particular group, I understand they are from Afghanistan. They

:10:57. > :11:00.probably would have been transported overland from Afghanistan, up to one

:11:01. > :11:03.of the borders in the Balkans and possibly into the European Union

:11:04. > :11:07.that way. And then they would have paid for on-washed passage to

:11:08. > :11:11.wherever it was they were eventually picked up and headed for the UK.

:11:12. > :11:16.What drove these people to flee Afghanistan and risk their lives?

:11:17. > :11:21.They have faced persecution. They have been murdered. They have been

:11:22. > :11:26.spat on. The women are in fear of going outside. Their places of

:11:27. > :11:30.worship are under scrutiny. Their funerals cannot be done without

:11:31. > :11:35.police protection. It is a very hard time if you are a Sikh in

:11:36. > :11:39.Afghanistan. A man in his 40s died in the container. The rest of the

:11:40. > :11:43.group were lucky to be alive. Police across Europe are joining forces to

:11:44. > :11:49.find the traffickers who care only for profit, not for people.

:11:50. > :11:55.A man has been shot and is critically injured after more

:11:56. > :11:58.violence prompted by the killing of an unarmed black teenager in

:11:59. > :12:04.Missouri. It happened on the first night of a curfew in Ferguson, in St

:12:05. > :12:07.Louis. From there here is our reporter.

:12:08. > :12:12.These images are shocking many Americans. For some, it was a police

:12:13. > :12:19.force behaving like an invading army, in a small town in Missouri.

:12:20. > :12:25.Demonstrators were on the streets, defying a curfew, calling not only

:12:26. > :12:30.for justice, but an end to police heavy-handedness. Police said they

:12:31. > :12:33.wouldn't fire tear gas, but as the night progressed, that is just what

:12:34. > :12:38.they did. In the chaos, there were shots fired. One person was

:12:39. > :12:43.critically injured and several were arrested. Police say their response

:12:44. > :12:47.was proportionate after recent looting and vandalism and prevented

:12:48. > :12:51.more people from getting hurt. Some in the mainly black community, in

:12:52. > :12:56.which Michael Brown was killed, say they feel under siege, but they will

:12:57. > :13:01.keep up what has become a fire of what they see as years of police

:13:02. > :13:07.discrimination. The law to me, personally, to me, I feel like it

:13:08. > :13:13.was necessary. Now we've got that tension of the governor, the

:13:14. > :13:18.President and the news casts, so now we are being herded. It will be

:13:19. > :13:24.worse before it gets better. Will it get worse? You see what's going on

:13:25. > :13:30.now - it's getting worse and worse every day. And the antagonism has

:13:31. > :13:36.increased over the week since he was shot multiple times and killed by

:13:37. > :13:41.police. He was 18 and unarmed. Police released footage, they say

:13:42. > :13:46.shows him acting aggressively in a shop and stealing cigars. It only

:13:47. > :13:50.angered people more when it was admitted the officer who shot

:13:51. > :13:54.Michael Brown didn't know he was a suspect. The community has become

:13:55. > :13:58.more united since the killing. It is the authorities that are badly out

:13:59. > :14:03.of step. A lot of these people feel that change is now going to come in

:14:04. > :14:07.the way young, black people are treated here. They also know that

:14:08. > :14:13.more trouble might be on the way before that happens.

:14:14. > :14:18.Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond, has admitted he could have

:14:19. > :14:22.made his position on a future currency of an independent Scotland

:14:23. > :14:26.clearer during a recent TV debate. He said he wished he explained that

:14:27. > :14:30.aspect in more detail. He was pressed on the issue by Alistair

:14:31. > :14:34.Darling of the Better Together campaign. The next TV debate will be

:14:35. > :14:39.held a week tomorrow w the referendum on September 18th.

:14:40. > :14:45.Now w all the sports news over to the BBC Sport Centre.

:14:46. > :14:51.England's women have been crowned rugby union world champions. They

:14:52. > :14:56.beat Canada in the final in Paris by 21-9. It's been 20 years since they

:14:57. > :15:00.won the tournament. Many of the team had to take unpaid leave to be

:15:01. > :15:05.involved. A trophy and a title to put an end to two decades of

:15:06. > :15:11.heartache. Three straight World Cup finals lost. England now have their

:15:12. > :15:15.revenge. For their most experienced players, the biggest challenge would

:15:16. > :15:21.be to set aside the pain of the defeats. It with was nervy start.

:15:22. > :15:27.Emily Scarratt kept England in front, until this... England

:15:28. > :15:35.suddenly bursting forward, flowing across the field. Danielle Waterman

:15:36. > :15:41.finally going over. In the second half, Canada cracked back to within

:15:42. > :15:46.two points. Emily Scarratt once again, with the knee-high socks,

:15:47. > :15:53.bounding through to clinch the title and rest the gotss of the past. --

:15:54. > :15:58.ghosts of the past. You dare to dream - you don't want to dream too

:15:59. > :16:02.much. For us, today, we did it. We are world champions. England finally

:16:03. > :16:07.have their day - a team of amateurs on top of the world. Among them are

:16:08. > :16:09.teachers, a vet, a plumber, now they go back to their day jobs. They do

:16:10. > :16:20.so as world champions. England's cricketers have won a Test

:16:21. > :16:26.series for the first time in over a year, beating India 3-1. They won

:16:27. > :16:34.the fifth and Final Test by an innings and 244 runs.

:16:35. > :16:38.Sunday at the Oval, the final verdict delivered to India. England

:16:39. > :16:46.wall lopped the ball around for an hour or so. Joe Root 149 not out.

:16:47. > :16:52.India 338 behind. Murali Vijay out. LBW to James Anderson. It was over

:16:53. > :16:57.in 30 overs. Ballance had a brilliant hand in it. Dhoni stood up

:16:58. > :17:05.for India. He was gone for none. Four wickets for Jordan. When he got

:17:06. > :17:09.rid Kohli. It was 94 all out. England made it look simple. It is

:17:10. > :17:13.easy to forget where they were three weeks ago - behind without a win any

:17:14. > :17:16.where for almost a year. England have won series here before. In the

:17:17. > :17:22.light of the last 12 months, I put it to the captain, this one was

:17:23. > :17:27.essential. You are right. English cricket needed a series win. To

:17:28. > :17:33.deliver it like we have delivered it, we'll have a big smile on our

:17:34. > :17:40.face to win the last two in three days, it is like the perfect game.

:17:41. > :17:43.England will let success in for now. The Premier League champions

:17:44. > :17:46.Manchester City and last season's runners up, Liverpool, both played

:17:47. > :17:50.their first games of this campaign today. If you don't want to know

:17:51. > :17:55.what happened it is time to pop out of the room as Match of the Day 2

:17:56. > :18:00.follows soon on BBC One, except in Scotland, where it is Sportscene

:18:01. > :18:04.first. Manchester City beat Newcastle, 2-0 thanks to goals from

:18:05. > :18:09.Silva and Sergio Aguero. Liverpool started with a 2-1 victory over

:18:10. > :18:12.Southampton. Great Britain and Northern Ireland have won 12 gold

:18:13. > :18:17.medals and finished top of the table. Mo Farah stormed to victory

:18:18. > :18:23.in the 5,000 metres to do the long distance double again. It is the

:18:24. > :18:27.fifth European title in all making him the most successful athlete in

:18:28. > :18:29.the history of the championships. Greg Rutherford added European gold

:18:30. > :18:35.to his Olympic and Commonwealth titles. There were three relay gold

:18:36. > :18:38.medals for Team GB. That's it. Stay with us here on BBC One. It is time

:18:39. > :18:39.for the news where
