:00:21. > :00:24.The Home Secretary Theresa May is considering banning extremist

:00:25. > :00:28.groups, even if they're not directly involved in terrorism.

:00:29. > :00:30.Writing in a newspaper, Mrs May says the beheading

:00:31. > :00:33.of the American journalist James Foley demonstrates what she

:00:34. > :00:38.called the "deadly threat we face from terrorism at home and abroad".

:00:39. > :00:45.Here's our Political Correspondent, Alan Soady.

:00:46. > :00:53.The masked Islamic State extremist thought to be British. He was shown

:00:54. > :00:59.in footage of the murder of American journalist James Foley in Syria. It

:01:00. > :01:03.is raising searching questions about extremism in the UK and the

:01:04. > :01:06.radicalisation of some reddish Muslims. The Home Secretary Theresa

:01:07. > :01:10.May has faced questions about the government response of the weather

:01:11. > :01:14.existing laws are enough, whether investors have been slow to tackle

:01:15. > :01:20.extremism. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, to reason male ward, we

:01:21. > :01:24.will be engaged in this struggle for many years, probably decades. We

:01:25. > :01:30.must give ourselves all the legal powers we need to prevail -- Theresa

:01:31. > :01:33.May. I'm looking again at new banning orders for extremist groups

:01:34. > :01:39.that fall short of the legal threshold of terrorist

:01:40. > :01:47.prescription. We have brothers from Bangladesh,

:01:48. > :01:49.Iraq, Cambodia... This propaganda video from Islamic State militants

:01:50. > :01:54.earlier this year appeared to show at least three British-born jihadis.

:01:55. > :01:57.In all this is bought several hundred radicalised British Muslims

:01:58. > :02:02.have gradually joined the fighting in Syria or Iraq. But not everyone

:02:03. > :02:07.thinks that new laws are the way to tackle the issue. One of the things

:02:08. > :02:11.we need to start addressing in addition to the legal aspects is

:02:12. > :02:16.about having conversations within the UK as well. Why are young people

:02:17. > :02:22.feeling attracted to the language of Islamic State? Online recruitment

:02:23. > :02:26.videos are radicalising some young British Muslims in their own homes.

:02:27. > :02:30.The government's latest proposals have been looked at before but

:02:31. > :02:35.ministers are under growing pressure to find a solution, and quickly.

:02:36. > :02:38.At least eight people have been killed in a suicide bomb attack on

:02:39. > :02:41.the headquarters of the intelligence agency in Iraq's capital Baghdad.

:02:42. > :02:44.It comes a day after 68 Sunni Muslims were shot dead in

:02:45. > :02:50.Jim Muir is in Irbil in northern Iraq.

:02:51. > :03:01.Yet more signs that sectarian killings are getting worse?

:03:02. > :03:08.Yes, things have gone back almost to the black days of 2006 when we had a

:03:09. > :03:12.spiral of vicious sectarian killings going on. A suicide bombing, almost

:03:13. > :03:17.certainly carried out by Sunni Muslims. Against the mainly Shia

:03:18. > :03:23.Muslims of the intelligence ministry. And of course still the

:03:24. > :03:30.fallout from the massacre yesterday of something like 70 Sunni Muslims

:03:31. > :03:37.in a mosque to the north of Baghdad. Again adding to this picture of

:03:38. > :03:44.really aggravated sectarian tension. We are being warned about the plight

:03:45. > :03:50.of a minority community in the town of Amerli by the United Nations?

:03:51. > :03:58.That is right. This town called Amerli which basically along is to

:03:59. > :04:01.the Shi'ite Muslim minority, besieged by Islamic State militants

:04:02. > :04:06.for almost two months now. The UN envoy warning that there could be a

:04:07. > :04:15.massacre there if there is no intervention to save these people.

:04:16. > :04:17.So growing concern. It is surrounded by Islamic State so it is not clear

:04:18. > :04:21.who might intervene to break that siege.

:04:22. > :04:23.A lorry driver from Londonderry has appeared

:04:24. > :04:26.in court accused of conspiring to facilitate the illegal immigration

:04:27. > :04:30.They were discovered in a container at Tilbury Docks

:04:31. > :04:37.Timothy Murphy has been remanded in custody.

:04:38. > :04:44.A second man is also due to appear before Chelmsford Magistrates today.

:04:45. > :04:47.Hospitals in England have been told to cut the cost of parking for some

:04:48. > :05:12.Ministers say patients and their families should

:05:13. > :05:17.In Scotland and Wales parking is already free

:05:18. > :05:20.at most hospitals, while in Northern Ireland some patients

:05:21. > :05:25.There have been more Israeli air strikes on targets in the

:05:26. > :05:27.It comes after Israel's Prime Minister said

:05:28. > :05:30.the Islamist militant organisation Hamas would pay a heavy price for

:05:31. > :05:33.the death of a four year old Israeli boy killed in a mortar attack.

:05:34. > :05:39.From Jerusalem, Quentin Somerville reports.

:05:40. > :05:47.There had been air strikes overnight. This man said he was at

:05:48. > :05:52.home with his wife and children. They heard explosions and Ricks

:05:53. > :05:56.started falling on top of them. They tried to get out of the house. Six

:05:57. > :06:01.people were killed overnight and dozens more injured. Hospitals

:06:02. > :06:06.struggled to deal with those hurt. This was the aftermath of an earlier

:06:07. > :06:10.Hamas mortar attack which killed an Israeli child. The fourth civilian

:06:11. > :06:18.to die since the conflict began. Israel said it would escalate its

:06:19. > :06:23.campaign in Gaza as a result. After a lull, the violence and casualties

:06:24. > :06:27.have been steadily increasing. Today the Palestinian president called for

:06:28. > :06:32.peace talks to resume immediately. He told a news conference he wanted

:06:33. > :06:37.them to start in Cairo immediately to avoid war casualties and

:06:38. > :06:41.sacrifice. Israel has yet to respond to the call. The cycle of violence

:06:42. > :06:44.has been renewed and there is little evidence yet that there is enough of

:06:45. > :06:53.a peace effort to bring it to a halt. And you can see more on all of

:06:54. > :06:57.those stories on the News Channel. Goodbye for now.

:06:58. > :07:07.those stories on the News Channel. Goodbye for now. Good afternoon. It

:07:08. > :07:13.is an extended holiday weekend for some and a lot of bright weather at

:07:14. > :07:18.times. But there will be a chill in the air especially at night. And

:07:19. > :07:22.rain does feature in the forecast. There are some showers at there at

:07:23. > :07:23.the moment. Some of
