:00:00. > :00:00.The capital of Belgium in lockdown tonight amid fears

:00:07. > :00:17.Troops are on the streets of Brussels; the authorities say

:00:18. > :00:21.We have received quite precise information about an attack like

:00:22. > :00:27.A state of emergency in Mali where security forces are

:00:28. > :00:36.hunting at least three gunmen who attacked a hotel yesterday.

:00:37. > :00:39.Four British tourists die after their helicopter crashes onto

:00:40. > :00:51.And, in sympathy and solidarity with Paris, the

:00:52. > :01:09.French National Anthem is sung at every match in the Premier League.

:01:10. > :01:14.Soldiers and armed police are patrolling the streets of Brussels

:01:15. > :01:17.tonight after the city was put on the highest state of alert.

:01:18. > :01:22.Belgium's Prime Minister said the authorities had information about

:01:23. > :01:25.'the imminent threat' of an attack similar to Paris possibly involving

:01:26. > :01:31.The Brussels Metro system has been closed, football matches have

:01:32. > :01:35.been postponed, and people are being told to avoid large crowds.

:01:36. > :01:41.From Brussels, our Europe Correspondent James Reynolds.

:01:42. > :01:56.This morning in Brussels, soldiers took the place of commuters.

:01:57. > :02:04.The government has closed all Metro stations in the capital.

:02:05. > :02:07.We have received quite precise information about the risk

:02:08. > :02:10.of an attack like the one that happened in Paris.

:02:11. > :02:14.We are talking about scenario in which several individuals with

:02:15. > :02:19.arms and explosives would launch an attack perhaps in several places.

:02:20. > :02:23.It may be that this man, Salah Abdeslam, is involved,

:02:24. > :02:27.he's one of the Paris attackers still on the run.

:02:28. > :02:33.The police believe he came back to Belgium after the attacks.

:02:34. > :02:37.His Brussels neighbourhood, Molenbeek,

:02:38. > :02:47.A troop carrier is parked outside the Town Hall.

:02:48. > :02:53.Upstairs, on the balcony, a wedding party ignores the terror alert.

:02:54. > :02:57.In the centre of town, shopping centres are largely empty.

:02:58. > :03:03.This weekend, the streets belong to this country's soldiers.

:03:04. > :03:06.Brussels is normally among the quietest of European

:03:07. > :03:11.capitals, but this city feels very different right now.

:03:12. > :03:14.The government has instructed citizens to follow all official

:03:15. > :03:20.instructions and not to spread any rumours.

:03:21. > :03:29.One woman expresses her disappointment.

:03:30. > :03:34.There is so much security, so we feel protected.

:03:35. > :03:45.Brussels continues to receive visitors.

:03:46. > :03:48.The 12.08 Eurostar from London arrives on time.

:03:49. > :03:51.We just want to go to be safe at home because even the police is

:03:52. > :03:59.Tonight, the police have told bar owners to shut down early.

:04:00. > :04:04.The government promises to reassess its security level on Sunday.

:04:05. > :04:07.Until then, many in this capital city believe it's better to stay

:04:08. > :04:19.Christian Fraser is in Brussels for us now.

:04:20. > :04:24.Christian, what atmosphere on the streets tonight?

:04:25. > :04:31.The weather has not been too kind to us tonight but normally at this time

:04:32. > :04:34.of the evening, particularly on a Saturday evening, this district in

:04:35. > :04:37.Brussels would be heavings, the bars and restaurants would be full. Not

:04:38. > :04:42.tonight though. You can see most of them are closed, the tables and

:04:43. > :04:44.chairs have been folded away and the soldiers standing in strategic

:04:45. > :04:50.positions around the city like they are at this Crossroads. Just at the

:04:51. > :04:54.end of this street here, there is one of those Armoured personnel

:04:55. > :04:58.carriers right next to the Christmas market which opens next week. Of

:04:59. > :05:02.course, this is not sustainable. The businesses are already complaining.

:05:03. > :05:05.You wonder what sort of message this sends to the terrorists. The

:05:06. > :05:09.government is under enormous pressure. As James said, they'll

:05:10. > :05:13.review the decision tomorrow afternoon. You suspect that they've

:05:14. > :05:16.given the intelligence authorities the weekend until the beginning of

:05:17. > :05:21.the working week to understand the threat and tray to eliminate it. Of

:05:22. > :05:26.course, that means trying to catch Salah Abdeslam. Just to underline

:05:27. > :05:30.the pressure that the Interior Minister, is under, he's quoted adds

:05:31. > :05:33.saying today that he wants to know everything about that notorious

:05:34. > :05:37.district of Molenbeek, even he said if that means the local authority

:05:38. > :05:41.has to bang on every door and demand to know who is living there.

:05:42. > :06:07.Jeremy Corbyn said there should be a David Cameron has welcomed a UN call

:06:08. > :06:17.Jeremy Corbyn said there should be a negotiated end to the war. In the

:06:18. > :06:21.wake of the pash Is attacks, Russia, China, the US and Britain backed a

:06:22. > :06:27.French resolution at the United Nations. This called for combatting

:06:28. > :06:33.search called Islamic state by all possible means. The government

:06:34. > :06:37.believes this will strengthen its case for extending British air

:06:38. > :06:44.strikes from Iraq to Syria. We will go on making the case for a broad

:06:45. > :06:47.response to the Isil challenge, political, military and humanitarian

:06:48. > :06:50.when we think we have got a consensus across Parliament we will

:06:51. > :06:57.put it to the vote. The ayes to the right, 272, the noes

:06:58. > :07:01.to the left, 285. The Prime Minister failed to get enough support the

:07:02. > :07:06.last time he called for air strikes in Syria, on that occasion against

:07:07. > :07:09.President Assad's regime. I get that and the Government will act

:07:10. > :07:14.accordingly. He wants no repeat of that humiliation. Now to join the

:07:15. > :07:19.fight in Syria, he went settle even for a narrow victory and will only

:07:20. > :07:24.hold a vote if he's sure the vote will hold strength and not weakness

:07:25. > :07:34.to IS. The third largest party in Parliament, the SNP say the UN

:07:35. > :07:39.Resolution doesn't give explicit legal answers. Today it didn't sound

:07:40. > :07:43.like Jeremy Corbyn was likely to support a military response.

:07:44. > :07:48.Experience of Afghanistan Iraq and Libya has convinced many of our own

:07:49. > :07:52.people that the enthusiasm for military interventions

:07:53. > :07:54.multiplied the threats to all of us. He later sounded more positive

:07:55. > :07:56.towards the resolution passed here at the UN after his Shadow Foreign

:07:57. > :08:00.Secretary said this. It's for the at the UN after his Shadow Foreign

:08:01. > :08:03.Prime Minister to make any proposition and then we, as the

:08:04. > :08:06.Labour opposition, will be able to respond. Clearly the passing of the

:08:07. > :08:12.UN Resolution is a very respond. Clearly the passing of the

:08:13. > :08:13.go. . This country a veneer of, because most would say David

:08:14. > :08:19.Cameron's not come up with a convincing enough case on Syria.

:08:20. > :08:23.But, some Shadow ministers I've spoken to say they are at least

:08:24. > :08:27.willing to be convinced even if that puts them at odds with their own

:08:28. > :08:30.leader. On Monday in Paris, the Prime Minister will discuss

:08:31. > :08:33.Counter-Terrorism with the French President. Perhaps a legacy of those

:08:34. > :08:37.whose lives were cut short in the city will be greater unity in the

:08:38. > :08:39.struggle against so-called Islamic state.

:08:40. > :08:42.In Mali, security services say they're hunting at least three men

:08:43. > :08:45.after yesterday's attack on a hotel in the capital, Bamako.

:08:46. > :08:49.19 people were killed when gunmen stormed the Radisson Blu.

:08:50. > :08:53.Mali's president has declared a 10-day state of emergency, and said

:08:54. > :08:57.the attack underlines the global threat posed by Islamic extremism.

:08:58. > :09:11.A day after they were attacked, hotel guests returned to the scene

:09:12. > :09:17.A day after they were attacked, of the tragedy. They came to collect

:09:18. > :09:23.their belongings and leave quickly. This was a siege that lasted ten

:09:24. > :09:29.hours. Helping with the rescue operation,

:09:30. > :09:36.French and US Special Forces. Many hostages were freed, among the dead

:09:37. > :09:41.Russians and Chinese, one American. Jihadi groups linked to Al-Qaeda in

:09:42. > :09:46.the north of the country claimed they were behind the attack. These

:09:47. > :09:51.militants are engaged in the violent struggle, French troops and UN

:09:52. > :09:55.Peacekeepers battled to to contain them. Today these pictures have

:09:56. > :10:03.emerged showing the aftermath of the bloody rampage. Hotel guests

:10:04. > :10:09.attacked in their bedrooms. One survivor, a chef at the hotel,

:10:10. > :10:19.is still very shaken. I kept seeing people who were so badly wounded.

:10:20. > :10:23.There were lots of injured people. Mali's President at the scene today

:10:24. > :10:31.warned no corner of the world will be spared. These are men who do not

:10:32. > :10:36.deserve to be called a man. They themselves decided to break away

:10:37. > :10:45.from human tear as we know it. Our values are not theirs. -- human

:10:46. > :10:55.tear. Children playing again like nothing happened but fear is

:10:56. > :10:59.palpable here. No-one can tell if it's over. We are scared because we

:11:00. > :11:02.live here. They said it was all over and they left but I don't like it.

:11:03. > :11:06.If you just walked along the streets, you wouldn't know this area

:11:07. > :11:11.was the scene of a mass murder. There's a strange mixed feeling of

:11:12. > :11:18.eeriness and normality here, but what happened isn't normal and the

:11:19. > :11:21.Radisson Blu is now abandoned to investigators working on a crime

:11:22. > :11:26.scene. The people of Mali have been living in fear of Jihadi attacks for

:11:27. > :11:33.a few years now. They have learnt to carry on in spite of tragic

:11:34. > :11:40.circumstances. But all they ask is that their country keeps them safe.

:11:41. > :11:43.Four British tourists are among seven people who've died

:11:44. > :11:46.after a helicopter crashed on a glacier in New Zealand.

:11:47. > :11:49.Police said rescue teams had reached the crash site but were hampered

:11:50. > :11:54.The glacier, which lies next to the town of Fox Glacier on the

:11:55. > :11:57.remote west coast of South Island, attracts thousands of tourists each

:11:58. > :12:01.Wedged between walls of ice, wreckage

:12:02. > :12:04.of the sight-seeing helicopter in which seven people died.

:12:05. > :12:07.Rescuers winched down to the crash site earlier today

:12:08. > :12:12.When the emergency services were alerted,

:12:13. > :12:15.four rescue helicopters were sent to the scene, but difficult terrain

:12:16. > :12:18.and poor visibilities are hampering the recovery effort.

:12:19. > :12:23.It's at the top of the glacier and it's heavily creviced,

:12:24. > :12:26.so very rough country and it's going to take a lot of care

:12:27. > :12:32.Among the dead is the pilot, the 28-year-old New Zealander,

:12:33. > :12:35.Mitch Gameron, said to be an experienced flyer.

:12:36. > :12:39.We don't yet know the identity of his passengers.

:12:40. > :12:43.The Fox Glacier, 13 kilometres long, is one of the country's top tourist

:12:44. > :12:48.attractions, thousands visit it every year with operators offering

:12:49. > :12:54.The crash happened about 2500 feet up the glacier at the start

:12:55. > :12:58.of the tourist season in what's described as rainy, cloudy weather.

:12:59. > :13:02.One local official said it was not ideal for helicopter flying.

:13:03. > :13:06.The exact cause of the crash is now being investigated.

:13:07. > :13:10.But it's left the small community from where

:13:11. > :13:15.Obviously we are absolutely devastated.

:13:16. > :13:19.We are here to support the families, the people involved.

:13:20. > :13:24.The police say it may take days to formally identify the dead.

:13:25. > :13:27.The Foreign Office says that the families of the four British

:13:28. > :13:30.people killed have been told and that they're being given support.

:13:31. > :13:34.The next step for embassy staff will be to help bring the bodies home.

:13:35. > :13:37.At the moment though, the weather is so bad, recovery teams can't even

:13:38. > :13:47.A 15-year-old boy has appeared in court accused

:13:48. > :13:50.of stabbing two teenagers at a school in south London.

:13:51. > :13:53.The boy, who can't be named, is charged with attempted murder

:13:54. > :13:58.and causing grievous bodily harm in the attacks at Kingsdale Foundation

:13:59. > :14:04.He was remanded in youth custody until next month.

:14:05. > :14:07.Steelworkers have been demonstrating in Sheffield over cuts to

:14:08. > :14:12.Thousands of job losses have been announced recently in Teesside,

:14:13. > :14:17.Marchers urged the Government to stem the influx

:14:18. > :14:26.Northern Ireland's First Minister, Peter Robinson, has given his final

:14:27. > :14:29.speech as leader to the Democratic Unionist Party conference.

:14:30. > :14:32.Mr Robinson, who's stepping down in the next few

:14:33. > :14:34.weeks, said that during his time in politics Northern Ireland had

:14:35. > :14:39.For me this political journey is coming to an end.

:14:40. > :14:42.In the coming period of time the party will have a new leader.

:14:43. > :14:46.I know how difficult a job this will be but I also know

:14:47. > :14:49.how rewarding it is to be able to change things for the better.

:14:50. > :14:56.My successor will face the sometimes ferocious rigours of high office.

:14:57. > :14:58.It's not a task for the faint-hearted.

:14:59. > :15:05.There'll be long, dark nights but believe me, morning does come.

:15:06. > :15:10.Finally, the French National Anthem was played before every match in the

:15:11. > :15:13.Premier League and Scottish Premier League today as a gesture of

:15:14. > :15:16.solidarity and remembrance for those affected by the attacks on Paris.

:15:17. > :15:29.It's an unfamiliar terrace tune but a powerful one.

:15:30. > :15:33.As at Wembley in the week, English football rallies to

:15:34. > :15:40.Particularly poignant moments for the Premier League's many

:15:41. > :15:44.French players and managers, the Maseillais sounded across

:15:45. > :15:49.This weekend, domestic football returned to France

:15:50. > :15:53.for the first time since last Friday's attacks, but things have

:15:54. > :16:00.Last night, before Nice took on Lyon,

:16:01. > :16:05.Sport might be escapism but it can't escape everything and,

:16:06. > :16:08.for those attending tonight's match at Manchester City, thoughts

:16:09. > :16:13.of what began eight days ago outside another football ground.

:16:14. > :16:16.So, when it came to playing the French National Anthem

:16:17. > :16:20.before their game with Liverpool, City fans were united.

:16:21. > :16:23.It's enormously important to sing out today, yes.

:16:24. > :16:26.We have got to stick with the French, help them out.

:16:27. > :16:31.It's an important thing to get out, it's important for the world to see

:16:32. > :16:35.Solidarity between the two countries, yes,

:16:36. > :16:41.Because football came so close to terror at the Stade de France,

:16:42. > :16:48.Few here know the words to this anthem

:16:49. > :17:16.Good evening. If you haven't enjoyed the sudden drop into winter, good

:17:17. > :17:17.news, the icy winds the sudden drop into winter, good

:17:18. > :17:19.lighter tomorrow but
