:00:25. > :00:26.the commemorations to mark the centenary of the 1916

:00:27. > :00:34.The failed rebellion against British rule 100 years ago left

:00:35. > :00:37.almost 500 people dead, and eventually led to the creation

:00:38. > :00:45.Our Ireland Correspondent Chris Buckler is in Dublin.

:00:46. > :00:52.Commemorations are taking place across this country but it is in

:00:53. > :00:57.Dublin where the main ceremonies are being held including here where

:00:58. > :01:02.parades have been passing all morning and a ceremony is being

:01:03. > :01:10.held. Among those in the crowds are family members of those who fought

:01:11. > :01:16.for Irish independence. In 1916 the St was at the centre of conflict.

:01:17. > :01:24.100 years later it has become the focal point for these

:01:25. > :01:29.commemorations, a place to remember the Rising. The Post Office was the

:01:30. > :01:35.military headquarters. A republic and the end of British rule was the

:01:36. > :01:40.cleared. With these words, the proclamation. We proclaim the Irish

:01:41. > :01:47.Republic as a sovereign independent state and we pledge our lives and

:01:48. > :01:52.the lives of our families to its cause. Today people lined the

:01:53. > :01:58.streets of Dublin for a parade that past some of the sites. Honouring

:01:59. > :02:02.those who died during six days when the city was engulfed in chaos. By

:02:03. > :02:12.the time the revolt was defeated much of Dublin was destroyed. Years

:02:13. > :02:18.later, a republic did emerge. In part that was as a result of the

:02:19. > :02:25.execution of some of the Rising's leaders. Their deaths made their

:02:26. > :02:35.masters. We cherish 100 years later the principles and the ideals

:02:36. > :02:39.contained in our proclamation for which they fought. Among those

:02:40. > :02:49.remembering the events of 1916, relatives of those who took part in

:02:50. > :02:55.the Rising. A century since has seen the city change and the birth of an

:02:56. > :03:02.independent nation. Given the deaths of British soldiers and civilians as

:03:03. > :03:06.well as Irish volunteers there are sensitivities in marking this

:03:07. > :03:12.history. Some Unionist politicians decided not to attend today's

:03:13. > :03:13.ceremonies. There is no doubting the importance of 1916 on this island.

:03:14. > :03:23.Thank you. Teachers have voted to ballot

:03:34. > :03:35.to high levels of The government said a boycott would

:03:36. > :03:39.only "disrupt children's education". A seven-year-old girl has died

:03:40. > :03:42.after the bouncy castle she was playing on is thought

:03:43. > :03:45.to have blown away in a sudden The child was carried across a park

:03:46. > :03:50.at an Easter fair in Harlow, Essex. She was treated by paramedics

:03:51. > :03:53.but later died in hospital. A man and a woman have been arrested

:03:54. > :03:56.on suspicion of manslaughter The Health and Safety Executive

:03:57. > :04:02.is also investigating. A man wanted in connection

:04:03. > :04:04.with the mass killings in Paris and Brussels has been

:04:05. > :04:07.arrested in Italy. The Algerian man was suspected

:04:08. > :04:10.of having produced false ID In Brussels, a march,

:04:11. > :04:17.planned for today to express solidarity with the victims of last

:04:18. > :04:20.week's bombings, has been called off after police said they were too

:04:21. > :04:23.stretched to cope. Our correspondent Anna Holligan

:04:24. > :04:34.is at the Place de la Bourse. The police said they simply could

:04:35. > :04:39.not call with the numbers and that is why people are once again

:04:40. > :04:44.gathering here leaving tributes. You can see the crowds congregating on

:04:45. > :04:49.the steps. In terms of the investigation the latest is that

:04:50. > :04:54.Belgian media are reporting that the only man so far are charged with

:04:55. > :04:59.terrorist murderers, Faisal C, is the third subject pictured on the

:05:00. > :05:05.surveillance footage from the airport. Detectives have concluded

:05:06. > :05:09.their investigations. They are clearing the debris and flights are

:05:10. > :05:15.expected to resume before Tuesday. This is the first weekend since the

:05:16. > :05:18.explosions rocked this Catholic nation. Which means that these

:05:19. > :05:22.gatherings have an added poignancy. Thank you.

:05:23. > :05:25.Meanwhile, Pope Francis has urged people to use the weapons of love

:05:26. > :05:28.to combat the evil of blind violence following the attacks in Brussels.

:05:53. > :05:55.At the end of a week where events may have shaken the faith of many,

:05:56. > :05:59.the reminder from St Peter's Square in Rome was one of the hope

:06:00. > :06:03.The Pope also called on Christians to remember

:06:04. > :06:06.victims of terror and violence, not just in Europe but across the world,

:06:07. > :06:19.TRANSLATION: All too often these brothers and sisters of ours meet

:06:20. > :06:21.along the way with death, or with rejection, by those

:06:22. > :06:27.who could offer them some welcome and assistance.

:06:28. > :06:29.In Kent the Archbishop of Canterbury also asked Christians

:06:30. > :06:33.to think about how Easter marking the Resurrection of Christ

:06:34. > :06:39.is a chance to overcome fear, to trust in God.

:06:40. > :06:42.Easter proclaims to us in flesh and blood that fear and death

:06:43. > :06:50.God has spoken life, hope and purpose.

:07:56. > :07:57.they have recaptured the ancient desert city of Palmyra

:07:58. > :08:01.from Islamic State fighters, who destroyed many of its historic

:08:02. > :08:02.monuments, provoking A military source said the army

:08:03. > :08:07.was in "complete control". The three-week battle for Palmyra

:08:08. > :08:16.may not quite be over but Syrian state television and other local

:08:17. > :08:18.channels have been showing soldiers patrolling the streets

:08:19. > :08:22.of the modern city today. As with other IS-held towns,

:08:23. > :08:26.progress is cautious. Navigating the bombs and booby traps
