:00:19. > :00:23.The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, says he's discovered

:00:24. > :00:26.that he is the son of Sir Winston Churchill's

:00:27. > :00:30.In a statement, he says a DNA test revealed that his biological father

:00:31. > :00:33.was not, as he had always believed, Gavin Welby, but the late

:00:34. > :00:47.The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, and the man he now knows to

:00:48. > :00:53.be his father, Sir Anthony Montague Browne. There is an extraordinary

:00:54. > :00:56.resemblance and it led a journalist to investigate further. Sir Anthony

:00:57. > :01:01.was Winston Churchill's private Secretary. He died three years ago.

:01:02. > :01:06.He and the Archbishop's mother had a brief affair before she married

:01:07. > :01:10.Gavin Welby. Justin Welby was born in 1956, both his parents were

:01:11. > :01:15.alcoholics. The Archbishop said his upbringing was messy. Gavin Welby

:01:16. > :01:18.died when his son was aged 21. Justin Welby had heard the rumours

:01:19. > :01:26.about his parentage. In Lambeth Palace he agreed to a DNA test. So I

:01:27. > :01:29.had this surreal thing of, first of all, getting hold of Sir Anthony

:01:30. > :01:34.Montague Browne's hairbrushes because they had his hair in it,

:01:35. > :01:40.from his widow who was content to let me take them. And to take a DNA

:01:41. > :01:44.sample from the Archbishop which I did myself. Under canon law there is

:01:45. > :01:48.no threat to the Archbishop's position. In a statement he said:

:01:49. > :01:54.Although there are elements of sad nsz, and even tragedy in my father's

:01:55. > :01:57.case, this is a story of redemption and hope from a place of tumultous

:01:58. > :02:03.difficulty and despair in several lives. Justin Welby's mother, Lady

:02:04. > :02:08.Jane Williams, now 86 and since remarried, said this news came as an

:02:09. > :02:10.almost unbelievable shock. She admitted a brief affair fuelled by a

:02:11. > :02:14.large amount of alcohol on both sides. The Archbishop is believed to

:02:15. > :02:18.be away at the moment at a conference in Africa. But in a

:02:19. > :02:23.statement released through Lambeth Palace he said his experience was

:02:24. > :02:28.similar to many families. He added, I know that I find who I am in Jesus

:02:29. > :02:33.Christ, not in genetics and my identity in him never changes.

:02:34. > :02:39.There's been widespread praise for the way the Archbishop has responded

:02:40. > :02:42.to the news. One commentator said he was an amazing man who had shown

:02:43. > :02:45.grace, wisdom and openness. David Cameron has said

:02:46. > :02:48.he could have handled the recent row about his family's

:02:49. > :02:49.tax affairs better. On Thursday, the Prime Minister

:02:50. > :02:51.admitted he did benefit from an offshore trust set up

:02:52. > :02:55.by his late father. Addressing the Conservative

:02:56. > :02:58.Spring Forum today he accepted full responsibility

:02:59. > :03:08.for how the news was dealt with. I know that I should have

:03:09. > :03:16.I know there are lessons to learn and I will learn them.

:03:17. > :03:20.Don't blame Number 10 Downing Street or nameless advisors.

:03:21. > :03:27.Our political correspondent Carole Walker is at

:03:28. > :03:37.So has he managed to draw a line under this yet?

:03:38. > :03:43.Has he succeeded, do you think? If you wanted to find the strength of

:03:44. > :03:48.the feeling that there is on this issue amongst some people at least

:03:49. > :03:52.we have just had a very noisy demonstration here from activists

:03:53. > :03:57.who are unhappy at the Government's approach to tax and say they haven't

:03:58. > :04:02.done enough to make sure that the wealthy pay their fair share. Labour

:04:03. > :04:05.are saying this whole matter has raised questions about David

:04:06. > :04:10.Cameron's personal integrity, the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is

:04:11. > :04:14.accusing him of failing to be honest and misleading the public and indeed

:04:15. > :04:18.saying that he must come before parliament on Monday to answer

:04:19. > :04:21.further questions about this. David Cameron, I think, does recognise

:04:22. > :04:25.that he should have handled this better. He's now saying he is going

:04:26. > :04:29.to be open and transparent in future. And indeed he will very

:04:30. > :04:33.shortly - we will see his tax returns and I think that is a

:04:34. > :04:35.further effort from the Prime Minister to show that he doesn't

:04:36. > :04:38.have anything to hide. Thank you.

:04:39. > :04:41.North Korea claims it has successfully tested a new type

:04:42. > :04:44.of engine designed for a missile that could hit the US mainland.

:04:45. > :04:48.North Korean media said the test was personally supervised

:04:49. > :04:50.by the country's leader, Kim Jong-un.

:04:51. > :04:52.Military tensions on the Korean peninsula have been rising

:04:53. > :04:54.after the North's nuclear test and long range rocket

:04:55. > :05:01.A fishing boat has sunk off the Western Isles

:05:02. > :05:05.with three of the four crew members missing.

:05:06. > :05:07.The Coastguard was alerted in the early hours of this morning

:05:08. > :05:10.when the boat's emergency beacon was activated near

:05:11. > :05:14.One crew member was rescued and a search is under

:05:15. > :05:17.Our correspondent James Shaw is in Glasgow.

:05:18. > :05:27.It was just about quarter to four this morning that the coastguard

:05:28. > :05:31.received that alert, that distress call from the boat. We don't yet

:05:32. > :05:36.know the name of the boat. We think it came from the Western Isles. They

:05:37. > :05:40.scrambled a helicopter that managed to find one survivor. They have been

:05:41. > :05:44.taken to hospital. We do not yet know their condition. Meanwhile,

:05:45. > :05:50.another helicopter and a lifeboat are searching for three other people

:05:51. > :05:53.missing in those waters at the very southern tip of the Western Isles.

:05:54. > :05:59.Weather conditions we are told are reasonably good. Of course, it's

:06:00. > :06:01.well known that fishing is an extremely dangerous job, people die

:06:02. > :06:07.every year fishing around the waters of the UK. Eight people it was in

:06:08. > :06:13.2014 the last figure that we have. Four people the year before that.

:06:14. > :06:16.The Marine Accident Investigation Branch will certainly be carrying

:06:17. > :06:18.out an investigation into this latest accident. Thank you.

:06:19. > :06:20.The Children's Commissioner for England has asked the French

:06:21. > :06:23.government to help children living alone in a refugee camp in Calais

:06:24. > :06:28.to be reunited with relatives in the UK.

:06:29. > :06:31.Anne Longfield has written to the French authorities asking

:06:32. > :06:33.them to speed up the claims of children believed to be

:06:34. > :06:37.She said children living in the camp known as the Jungle

:06:38. > :06:43.The American aerospace company SpaceX has successfully landed

:06:44. > :06:46.a rocket on an ocean platform for the first time, after four

:06:47. > :06:50.Part of the Falcon 9 rocket touched down after helping

:06:51. > :06:53.to deliver supplies to the International Space Station.

:06:54. > :06:57.The breakthrough means the company will be able to re-use rocket parts

:06:58. > :07:01.in the future instead of discarding them in the sea.

:07:02. > :07:04.You can see more on all of today's stories on the BBC News Channel.
