:00:00. > :00:07.Sadiq Khan's sworn in as the new Mayor of London.
:00:08. > :00:09.Amid criticism of the tone of the Conservative
:00:10. > :00:17.Speaking at Southwark Cathedral, the new mayor promised to
:00:18. > :00:22.represent every community in the capital.
:00:23. > :00:24.A notable absence at today's ceremony was Labour leader
:00:25. > :00:38.Arlene Foster remains as Northern Ireland's
:00:39. > :00:40.First Minister, with the make-up of the Northern Ireland
:00:41. > :00:43.And the anticipation mounts as Leicester City
:00:44. > :01:00.prepares to receive the Premier League trophy.
:01:01. > :01:07.Sadiq Khan has been sworn in as Mayor of London -
:01:08. > :01:11.the first muslim to hold such a post in a European Union capital.
:01:12. > :01:15.Speaking at Southwark Cathedral he promised to represent every
:01:16. > :01:18.community in the capital after a bitterly fought campaign.
:01:19. > :01:21.The Labour MP secured a convincing win over Zac Goldsmith,
:01:22. > :01:23.whose Conservative party has rejected criticism of the tone
:01:24. > :01:34.Our Political Correspondent Alex Forsyth reports.
:01:35. > :01:41.In the splendour of Southwark Cathedral, a standing ovation for
:01:42. > :01:46.London's first Muslim mayor. Sadiq Khan's teamed deliberately chose a
:01:47. > :01:49.venue and invited an audience designed to celebrate diversity and
:01:50. > :01:55.that was what the new mayor promised to do when he set out what and who
:01:56. > :02:01.he will stand for. To represent every single community and every
:02:02. > :02:08.single part of our city as mayor for all Londoners. The sea of faces,
:02:09. > :02:12.some famous, one was notably absent. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn didn't
:02:13. > :02:18.attend, but the party's former leader was in the front row. Jeremy
:02:19. > :02:21.was obviously supporting Sadiq and that important, I know how important
:02:22. > :02:24.it is to be supporting your candidates. It is a victory for
:02:25. > :02:31.Sadiq Khan and for the Labour Party. Sadiq Khan ran his own campaign at
:02:32. > :02:37.arms length from the Labour leader. Was it a vote for Corbyn or calf? I
:02:38. > :02:44.think it was a vote for London. -- for Sadiq Khan. But the vote on
:02:45. > :02:48.Thursday showed his London is proud of the son of a bust either from a
:02:49. > :02:52.council estate, the son of immigrants, to be the mayor of our
:02:53. > :02:57.great city. His defeated opponent was accused of a divisive campaign
:02:58. > :03:02.which sought to link his rival with Islamic extremists. Critics
:03:03. > :03:05.including conservatives said Zac Goldsmith damaged the party's
:03:06. > :03:08.reputation on race and religion. This morning he was tight-lipped,
:03:09. > :03:14.leaving others to defend his tactics. In an election for one of
:03:15. > :03:22.the most important elective offices in Britain, it's right that people
:03:23. > :03:25.are scrutinised as candidates, their past associations and policy
:03:26. > :03:29.positions. He answered them and that's over now. Sadiq Khan is in
:03:30. > :03:33.high spirits after this win, undoubtedly a boost for Labour in an
:03:34. > :03:38.otherwise disappointing set of election results. The fact the new
:03:39. > :03:41.London mayor has distanced himself from Jeremy Corbyn means there is a
:03:42. > :03:46.limit to the credit the Labour leader can take for this victory.
:03:47. > :03:49.For now, it belongs to the new face of London.
:03:50. > :03:55.Alex joins us now. Picking up on your last point, how big a surprise
:03:56. > :04:00.was it Jeremy Corbyn wasn't there today? There was no specific form on
:04:01. > :04:03.these things, but this mayor election was Labour's biggest
:04:04. > :04:08.success in these recent elections so it's unusual he wasn't there. By
:04:09. > :04:11.contrast we expect Jeremy Corbyn to attend an event to celebrate the
:04:12. > :04:16.election of the Labour candidate who has won the role of Bristol mayor.
:04:17. > :04:20.Read into it what you will. It raises questions about how Sadiq
:04:21. > :04:24.Khan Jeremy Corbyn work together. The other potential consequence of
:04:25. > :04:27.this mayor fight is for the Conservatives, growing criticism of
:04:28. > :04:34.Zac Goldsmith's campaign. We've heard from Mohamed amine, chair of
:04:35. > :04:37.the conservative Muslim for them, -- conservative Muslim Forum. The
:04:38. > :04:42.question is whether it will damage the conservative standing in the
:04:43. > :04:43.long-term. Particularly in ethnic groups.
:04:44. > :04:46.All 108 seats have now been filled in the Northern Ireland Assembly
:04:47. > :04:49.election as the Democratic Unionists and Sinn Fein retain their position
:04:50. > :04:52.as the major parties in the power-sharing coalition
:04:53. > :04:58.The Democratic Unionist Party has 38 seats, Sinn Fein has 28
:04:59. > :05:03.Our Ireland correspondent Chris Buckler's report contains
:05:04. > :05:16.Arlene Foster has emerged from this election as the face of unionism.
:05:17. > :05:21.She's only been DUP leader for six months but she's made her mark by
:05:22. > :05:26.leading the Democratic Unionists to clear victory in this election. I
:05:27. > :05:30.going determined to make devolution work for all the people of Northern
:05:31. > :05:35.Ireland and, above all, I'm proud, very proud, to be the First Minister
:05:36. > :05:45.of this great wee country. Thank you very much. There will be new voices
:05:46. > :05:52.in the assembly. The Angelus territory party, the people before
:05:53. > :05:55.profit Alliance, won two seats. Taking drugs from Sinn Fein,
:05:56. > :06:02.including in the party's heartland of West Belfast. But Sinn Fein
:06:03. > :06:06.secured its position as storm onto's second largest party. Now the
:06:07. > :06:10.challenge for Republicans and Unionists is to make power-sharing
:06:11. > :06:15.work. I do think the public need convincing that politicians have the
:06:16. > :06:21.ability to work together. I think I'm known as a politician who has
:06:22. > :06:24.reached out left, right and centre, we need to continue to do that. Only
:06:25. > :06:29.last autumn the future of the assembly looked in jeopardy amid
:06:30. > :06:32.rows between the parties. Now they have two weeks to put their
:06:33. > :06:35.differences aside to agree a programme for government. In its own
:06:36. > :06:38.way, it's another challenge for Stormont.
:06:39. > :06:40.Junior doctors are meeting to decide whether to re-start
:06:41. > :06:42.talks with the government over their contracts.
:06:43. > :06:44.After months of walkouts and protests, they're
:06:45. > :06:46.debating whether to accept the Health Secretary's
:06:47. > :06:51.pre-conditions for the resumption of negotiations.
:06:52. > :06:53.Jeremy Hunt has demanded the contentious issue of Saturday
:06:54. > :07:02.Thousands more people are expected to be moved to safety during the day
:07:03. > :07:04.from areas threatened by ferocious wildfires in the Canadian
:07:05. > :07:09.The blaze currently extends over more than a quarter
:07:10. > :07:11.of a million acres - but officials say it
:07:12. > :07:19.Many evacuees are still stranded to the north of the city.
:07:20. > :07:21.North Korea's ruling party has announced it will bestow its top
:07:22. > :07:24.title on the country's leader Kim Jong Un.
:07:25. > :07:27.There's speculation he'll adopt his late father's title
:07:28. > :07:29.of 'general secretary', in what's seen as an endorsement
:07:30. > :07:37.Football now - and Leicester City will be crowned Premier League
:07:38. > :07:38.champions later tonight after their home match
:07:39. > :07:43.Our Sports Correspondent Ollie Foster is at the King Power stadium
:07:44. > :07:54.It certainly does, they kick off next 15 minutes and the result just
:07:55. > :07:59.does not matter, the title is already bears. You go down the years
:08:00. > :08:05.and look at all those great captains who lifted the trophy, back to Steve
:08:06. > :08:09.Bruce, Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, Tony Adams. Most recently John Terry. Now
:08:10. > :08:13.Captain Wes Morgan is going to join that illustrious list. It's also
:08:14. > :08:17.going to be a very special afternoon for the man
:08:18. > :08:20.going to be a very special afternoon well. In the most extraordinary of
:08:21. > :08:23.seasons it should come as no surprise the Premier League trophy
:08:24. > :08:27.started out in Steve worthy was Mac living room this morning. A bit like
:08:28. > :08:30.those fans who bet on Leicester winning the title, he entered a
:08:31. > :08:31.competition for the chance to actually hand over the
:08:32. > :08:36.competition for the chance to don't think it's really going to
:08:37. > :08:39.kick in until this afternoon. I've replayed it in my head are many
:08:40. > :08:46.times, had sleepless nights, but worth every sleepless night. It's
:08:47. > :08:50.been like a fairy tale. After a season of ups and more obscure its
:08:51. > :08:54.been a week-long party in the city with all the more to celebrate
:08:55. > :09:02.because everyone remembers the lows. Eight years ago we were in League 1.
:09:03. > :09:07.And today it's a turnaround, to say we are crowned Premier League
:09:08. > :09:11.championship Thierry champions commit unbelievable. There will be
:09:12. > :09:16.solid silver proof that they are the best team in the country. It's a
:09:17. > :09:18.very, very special day for Leicester. So, too, Middlesbrough.
:09:19. > :09:22.It was the last day in Leicester. So, too, Middlesbrough.
:09:23. > :09:26.championship. They needed a draw at home against Brighton to get
:09:27. > :09:30.promotion back to the Premier League after seven years away. They got
:09:31. > :09:34.that. It finished 1-1. Brighton needed to win to go up at the
:09:35. > :09:38.expense of Middlesbrough. They drop into the play-offs. That match was
:09:39. > :09:43.being billed as the ?170 million match. Middlesbrough back in the
:09:44. > :09:47.Premier League next season, a season that will have Leicester as
:09:48. > :09:54.champions. Here we wait for them to lift that premiership trophy. More
:09:55. > :09:55.to come through the evening on the BBC News Channel.
:09:56. > :09:56.I'll be back with the late news at 10.10pm.
