:00:22. > :00:28.More details are emerging of what was happening on board

:00:29. > :00:30.the Egyptair passenger jet in the moments before it plunged

:00:31. > :00:34.French aviation officials have confirmed on-board sensors detected

:00:35. > :00:37.smoke in several areas of the plane shortly before it disappeared

:00:38. > :00:39.but the cause of the crash is still not known.

:00:40. > :00:42.Today, the Egyptian military release the first images of debris

:00:43. > :00:45.recovered from the sea, as our correspondent

:00:46. > :00:50.In the deep Mediterranean between Greece and Egypt,

:00:51. > :00:52.recovery teams are finding the remnants of flight 804

:00:53. > :01:01.They are assembled on the deck of a nearby Egyptian navy ship.

:01:02. > :01:03.What looks like a blanket, an airline pillow,

:01:04. > :01:09.foam that was once part of someone's seat.

:01:10. > :01:11.There are seat belts and other debris clearly marked

:01:12. > :01:15.Nearby the tattered remains of a smart white handbag

:01:16. > :01:25.Most poignantly, there is also a life vest which appears unused,

:01:26. > :01:27.in the chaos of those last terrifying minutes there was,

:01:28. > :01:33.More than three hours into the plane's journey from Paris, Greek

:01:34. > :01:38.air traffic controllers tried and failed to get in touch with the

:01:39. > :01:42.pilot. The signal at the lost. The plane swerved sharply, 90 degrees

:01:43. > :01:46.left and then a complete circle to the right, before dropping off the

:01:47. > :01:51.radar completely. More details are emerging about those final minutes.

:01:52. > :01:59.The jet's in-flight system sent a string of error messages to the air

:02:00. > :02:03.line. The first, warnings about an airline window, then smoke detected

:02:04. > :02:09.in the toilet. Apparently there was some sort of overheat fire event on

:02:10. > :02:13.board. Possible reasons? Impossible to say at the moment. The

:02:14. > :02:21.possibilities are an electrical malfunction of some sort, something

:02:22. > :02:25.burning put in a toilet waste compartment or a hostile device, for

:02:26. > :02:29.that matter. Faces are gradually being put to the names of those

:02:30. > :02:34.killed. The pilots and half the passengers were Egyptian. Among the

:02:35. > :02:39.others, 15 French people, two Canadians, others from Algeria and

:02:40. > :02:44.Saudi Arabia, and one Briton. We've offered help with the surge, we've

:02:45. > :02:48.offered air accident investigation board to support it when it gets

:02:49. > :02:52.going. The sooner we can understand exact to what happened, the sooner

:02:53. > :02:56.we can make sure with our partners around the world that we are taking

:02:57. > :03:02.the necessary actions to keep people safe. As the grim task of recovering

:03:03. > :03:07.the debris continues, the main focus is on finding the aircraft data

:03:08. > :03:10.recorders, which might explain why these people died.

:03:11. > :03:13.With me now is our Transport Correspondent Richard Westcott.

:03:14. > :03:19.Where does this latest piece of information take us then, Richard?

:03:20. > :03:24.It's definitely a significant part of the puzzle. We're pretty certain

:03:25. > :03:27.there was a fire on board. But unfortunately what it doesn't tell

:03:28. > :03:31.us is the critical question, how did that fire start? It could be

:03:32. > :03:36.malicious, it could be a Bond, people starting it on purpose.

:03:37. > :03:45.Equally, it could be electrical wiring going wrong. -- a bomb.

:03:46. > :03:49.Potentially, phones and laptops can start fires, they're very powerful.

:03:50. > :03:52.Until we get the wreckage and these data recorders, we're not really

:03:53. > :03:56.going to know. I've spoken to a world expert on fires on aircraft

:03:57. > :04:01.and he said the facts are completely confusing. He said, if this was an

:04:02. > :04:08.accidental fire, it all seemed to happen too quickly, and if it were a

:04:09. > :04:11.bomb, it seems to happen too slowly. Unfortunately it could be weeks or

:04:12. > :04:14.months before we get a final answer. Richard, thank you.

:04:15. > :04:16.The Shadow Chancellor, John McDonnell, has been setting

:04:17. > :04:19.out how a future Labour government would approach the economy.

:04:20. > :04:21.In a speech, he said the party wouldn't win the next general

:04:22. > :04:24.election unless it showed that it was a responsible

:04:25. > :04:29.He also promised moves to increase home ownership,

:04:30. > :04:31.and provide 100,000 council houses a year.

:04:32. > :04:36.Here's our Political Correspondent, Carole Walker.

:04:37. > :04:43.Labour admits it is at the early stages of developing its economic

:04:44. > :04:47.strategy. So far, we have new advisory bodies, plans to boost

:04:48. > :04:52.housing and give elected mayors the power to regulate rents. The Shadow

:04:53. > :04:56.Chancellor acknowledge Labour has more to do to prove it could be a

:04:57. > :05:01.credible alternative government. You know as well as I do it's not enough

:05:02. > :05:04.to block and protest. If we want to make a lasting difference to

:05:05. > :05:09.people's lives, we have do offer an alternative. Labour is not only a

:05:10. > :05:14.party of protest, it's a party of government. He says there's no doubt

:05:15. > :05:20.Labour lost the last election because voters did not trust to run

:05:21. > :05:23.the economy. How are you doing? Take a seat. I put it to him that they

:05:24. > :05:28.still don't know where the party stands on key issues of taxation and

:05:29. > :05:32.spending. I'm not really in tested in income tax. I'm interested in

:05:33. > :05:35.what British people are interested in, a fair taxation system, making

:05:36. > :05:42.sure the corporations and the rich pay their way. Not increasing being

:05:43. > :05:45.come tax. Are you said you would put up the top rate? We're not

:05:46. > :05:53.increasing the income tax for the top rate. We wanted to return to

:05:54. > :05:57.what it was before. Establishing credibility on the economy remains a

:05:58. > :06:01.huge challenge for Labour. The leadership say that approach will be

:06:02. > :06:04.socialist, interventionist. Some of the party's MPs say that will not

:06:05. > :06:08.win them back the broad support they need across the country. Labour does

:06:09. > :06:12.have a fiscal rule to balance day-to-day spending and borrow to

:06:13. > :06:17.invest. But delegates admit that's not enough. No, it needs to be much

:06:18. > :06:22.more. And of course the thinking is developing all the time. But there's

:06:23. > :06:26.a hell of a lot already in place. Does Labour need to do more? It's

:06:27. > :06:30.got to repeat these messages and make clear what they mean to

:06:31. > :06:33.ordinary people on the street. What they want is wealth creation right

:06:34. > :06:38.from the grassroots right to the top. The Conservatives say Labour

:06:39. > :06:43.would put the economy at risk with more borrowing and debt, but

:06:44. > :06:48.Labour's promises to end austerity and create a fairer taxation system

:06:49. > :06:52.could be appealing, if voters leave it does have the right policies to

:06:53. > :06:56.change the way our economy is run. Carole Walker, BBC News.

:06:57. > :06:59.A woman has appeared in court accused of owning a dangerously out

:07:00. > :07:01.of control dog after 11 children were attacked in a park

:07:02. > :07:04.Nine children needed hospital treatment after

:07:05. > :07:07.Claire Neale, who's 37, was remanded in custody

:07:08. > :07:16.The number of people confirmed dead in recent landslides in Sri Lanka

:07:17. > :07:21.is rising, with the latest figures suggesting at least 70

:07:22. > :07:22.people have been killed, with more than 120

:07:23. > :07:28.Huge landslides have buried some victims in up to 50 feet of mud

:07:29. > :07:34.and more than a quarter of a million people have been forced

:07:35. > :07:38.Authorities say the country's been hit by the heaviest

:07:39. > :07:56.The Church of Scotland has voted to allow ministers to marry people of

:07:57. > :08:00.the same sex. The vote was made on the first day of its annual General

:08:01. > :08:03.Assembly in Edinburgh. Civil partnerships were already permitted

:08:04. > :08:04.the clergy but ministers still barred from conducting gay wedding

:08:05. > :08:06.ceremonies. Sport here and it's

:08:07. > :08:09.a big day for football. Rangers are playing Hibernian

:08:10. > :08:11.at Hampden Park in the Scottish Cup, whilst Manchester United

:08:12. > :08:13.and Crystal Palace are preparing for this afternoon's FA

:08:14. > :08:15.Cup Final at Wembley. Katie Gornall joins us

:08:16. > :08:17.from inside Wembley Stadium. Katie, could this be

:08:18. > :08:18.the year of the underdog. Katie, could Crystal Palace complete

:08:19. > :08:27.the year of the underdog? They have been talking about how

:08:28. > :08:31.they have been inspired by Lester's performance in the Premier League.

:08:32. > :08:36.Crystal Palace fans are filtering into the stadium around me. The last

:08:37. > :08:40.time -- they will want a different result to the last time they met at

:08:41. > :08:44.Windley, 1990. Alan Pardew was a play on the losing side and now he

:08:45. > :08:48.is Crystal Palace's manager, again with a chance to try and lead

:08:49. > :08:52.Crystal Palace do their first major trophy. His opposite number, Louis

:08:53. > :08:56.van Gaal, will be under a lot more pressure to deliver. There a growing

:08:57. > :08:59.feeling that this could be his final game in charge of Manchester United

:09:00. > :09:04.and that even a win this afternoon in the FA Cup may not be enough save

:09:05. > :09:09.him. 20 of subplots to this. It's also a big cup final day over in

:09:10. > :09:16.Scotland as well, Hibernian taking on Rangers in an all Championship

:09:17. > :09:19.site. Hibernian got off to a fantastic start with Anthony Stokes

:09:20. > :09:24.scoring after just three minutes. Then against the run of play Rangers

:09:25. > :09:34.managed to equalise through Kenny Miller. 1-1 at half-time, the second

:09:35. > :09:40.half just getting under way now. England in a strong position on day

:09:41. > :09:46.three of the first test against Langerak Headingley. A short time

:09:47. > :09:48.ago Sri Lanka were 100-5 in their second innings, they still trailing

:09:49. > :09:54.in by more than 100 runs.
