:00:00. > :00:07.A mass shooting at a nightclub in Florida claims the lives

:00:08. > :00:23.It's the worst attack of its kind in modern US history.

:00:24. > :00:30.It happened in the early hours at a crowded gay club in Orlando.

:00:31. > :00:33.The president said it was an attack on all Americans.

:00:34. > :00:36.This was an act of terror and an act of hate.

:00:37. > :00:38.As Americans, we are united in grief, in outrage and in resolve

:00:39. > :00:44.The gunman has been named as Omar Mateen -

:00:45. > :00:51.a US citizen of Afghan descent - who was already known to the FBI.

:00:52. > :00:52.The FBI first became aware of Mateen in 2013 when he made

:00:53. > :00:56.inflammatory comments to co-workers, alleging possible terrorist ties.

:00:57. > :00:58.We'll have the latest from Orlando and Washington,

:00:59. > :01:00.following claims from Islamic State that it was responsible.

:01:01. > :01:07.At Euro 2016, an official warning to Russia and England that,

:01:08. > :01:09.if there's further violence among supporters, their teams

:01:10. > :01:15.Conservative Michael Gove - at home in Aberdeen -

:01:16. > :01:16.explaining why his family's experience has led

:01:17. > :01:23.And it might have been a washout but it turned out nice again

:01:24. > :01:49.President Obama has declared the mass shooting

:01:50. > :01:53.at a gay nightclub in Florida, in which 50 people died,

:01:54. > :01:55.as an act of terror and an act of hate.

:01:56. > :01:57.It happened in the early hours of the morning

:01:58. > :02:02.when a man opened fire in the crowded nightclub in Orlando.

:02:03. > :02:04.The so-called Islamic State group has issued a statement,

:02:05. > :02:10.The gunman, named as Omar Mateen, a US citizen of Afghan descent,

:02:11. > :02:14.had come to the FBI's attention three years ago.

:02:15. > :02:22.Our North America editor, Jon Sopel, is in Orlando with the latest.

:02:23. > :02:35.A new name for an inglorious list. First of all you had Virginia Tech

:02:36. > :02:42.then Sandy Hook elementary school, the Charleston shootings, the list

:02:43. > :02:46.goes on and on. Now this one. The nightclub is 100 yards down the road

:02:47. > :02:48.behind me and it is the worst of them all in terms of fatalities. 50

:02:49. > :02:58.people killed on a night out. Gunshots at the Pulse nightclub in

:02:59. > :03:02.Orlando. It is too in the morning. Inside, a lone gunman with an

:03:03. > :03:09.assault rifle and revolver is systematically shooting at the

:03:10. > :03:13.partygoers. Oh, my God! He takes hostages and three hours elapse

:03:14. > :03:20.before a police SWAT team forces its way in and kills him. By then, 50

:03:21. > :03:25.are dead. No one knew what was going on until they saw people on the

:03:26. > :03:30.ground screaming and heard the commotion. One mother received a

:03:31. > :03:34.text from her son trapped inside saying he thought he was going to

:03:35. > :03:40.die. Another struggles to find out if her son is still alive. No one

:03:41. > :03:44.can town me where my son is, if he has been shot or is dead. No one

:03:45. > :03:52.knows. They tummy there are fatalities. The gunman, Omar Mateen,

:03:53. > :03:58.is of Afghan descent and had beyond FBI radar as a possible sympathiser.

:03:59. > :04:04.There was a fear of booby traps at the scene. It had been a deeply

:04:05. > :04:09.traumatic night. To look into the eyes of officers told the whole

:04:10. > :04:14.story. They were all shaken by this incident, by what they saw inside

:04:15. > :04:20.the club. They did an unbelievable job with courageous efforts in

:04:21. > :04:25.rescuing many, many hostages. In Washington, Barack Obama is

:04:26. > :04:33.reworking a script he has delivered all too often during his presidency.

:04:34. > :04:39.We know enough to say this was an act of terror and an act of hate. As

:04:40. > :04:45.Americans, we are united in grief, in outrage, in resolve to defend our

:04:46. > :04:48.people. Then, on to be issued at the most powerful man in the world has

:04:49. > :04:54.been able to make simply no progress on. This massacre is a further

:04:55. > :04:59.reminder of how easy it is full someone to get their hands on a

:05:00. > :05:04.weapon that shoots people in a school or a house of worship, or a

:05:05. > :05:10.movie theatre, or in a nightclub. And we have to decide if that is the

:05:11. > :05:14.kind of country we want to be. The motive was clear. Omar Mateen rang

:05:15. > :05:19.police from inside the nightclub and said he had been inspired by

:05:20. > :05:23.so-called Islamic State. Another home-grown jihadists willing to kill

:05:24. > :05:27.at random, in a society where getting hold of the most powerful

:05:28. > :05:31.and lethal weaponry is as easy as easy can be.

:05:32. > :05:34.As we heard, the so-called Islamic State group has said one

:05:35. > :05:36.of its "fighters" was responsible for the atrocity.

:05:37. > :05:38.Earlier, Omar Mateen's father claimed the attack had nothing

:05:39. > :05:41.But the FBI has acknowledged that it first became aware

:05:42. > :05:43.of Mateen in 2013, following reports that he'd

:05:44. > :05:47.talked about possible links with terror groups.

:05:48. > :05:55.Our security correspondent Gordon Corera has the latest.

:05:56. > :06:01.Omar Mateen seen here in pictures from his own social media account.

:06:02. > :06:08.His family was from Afghanistan that he was born in New York. Today his

:06:09. > :06:14.house, an hour and a half from Orlando, was being searched. Those

:06:15. > :06:17.who knew him expressed their shock. Outgoing, a regular young kid. He

:06:18. > :06:25.was younger than me. It is crazy. I do not know. Omar was cool, calm and

:06:26. > :06:31.collected. I never saw him in a fist fight. What led Omar Mateen to

:06:32. > :06:38.attack a gay club? His father said he was not motivated by religion but

:06:39. > :06:42.was angry at seeing a gay couple embracing in front of his family. In

:06:43. > :06:45.the last few hours, so-called Islamic State issued this message

:06:46. > :06:51.describing him as one of their fighters. It is not the from this

:06:52. > :06:57.whether they had direct contact with him or inspired him to act and are

:06:58. > :07:01.now claiming credit. -- not clear. The FBI had said he had been

:07:02. > :07:06.investigated and cleared twice, once for possible links to a suicide

:07:07. > :07:11.bomber and once for concerned at work. The FBI first became aware of

:07:12. > :07:16.Mateen in 2013 when he made inflammatory comments to co-workers,

:07:17. > :07:21.alleging possible terrorist ties will stop the FBI investigated the

:07:22. > :07:25.matter could including interviews with witnesses, physical

:07:26. > :07:30.surveillance and records checks. Bombs targeting the Boston Marathon

:07:31. > :07:34.in 2013 make clear the threat of home-grown terrorism in America was

:07:35. > :07:39.increasing. Killings in San Bernardino last year more closely

:07:40. > :07:44.resemble events in Orlando. Then a married couple pledged allegiance to

:07:45. > :07:50.ISO 40 a gun attack in their workplace. The FBI will now be

:07:51. > :07:56.scouring every detail of Omar Mateen's life. As the FBI tries to

:07:57. > :07:57.understand what mix of hatred and ideology drove him, they'll be

:07:58. > :08:02.fearful of what more is to come. In a moment, the latest

:08:03. > :08:05.from the scene with Jon Sopel. But first to Nick Bryant

:08:06. > :08:12.at the White House. We're entering a crucial phase in

:08:13. > :08:16.the presidential campaign. Just wondering what you think might be

:08:17. > :08:23.the impact of these events on that campaign. Within hours of the

:08:24. > :08:26.Orlando massacre, it was being politicised, but front and centre in

:08:27. > :08:31.the battle for the White House. Donald Trump went on to Twitter and

:08:32. > :08:37.thanked people for congratulating him about being right about radical

:08:38. > :08:40.Islam, as he put it. He said he did not want congratulations, he wanted

:08:41. > :08:43.toughness and vigilance. The last few minutes he has released a

:08:44. > :08:47.statement, calling on President Obama to resign and Hillary Clinton

:08:48. > :08:52.to drop out of the race because they will refuse to use the term radical

:08:53. > :08:59.Islam. President Obama has not used it because he thinks it implies that

:09:00. > :09:04.America is at war with a religion. Hillary Clinton has announced she is

:09:05. > :09:08.postponing what would be her first joint appearance with President

:09:09. > :09:12.Obama later in the week. Donald Trump clearly believes that Orlando

:09:13. > :09:17.will help him, as did Paris, as did San Bernardino. There are many

:09:18. > :09:19.people who will think that trying to score political points on a day like

:09:20. > :09:29.this is gross insensitivity. Lets join John in Orlando. In a

:09:30. > :09:33.statement, he said straightaway, he raised the issue of gun control

:09:34. > :09:40.immediately. Does that mean this could see another attempt in that

:09:41. > :09:44.area? You know, it is not even 12 hours since the SWAT team is kind of

:09:45. > :09:49.managed to force their way into that nightclub and rescue the few

:09:50. > :09:53.hostages that had survived. Already, as Nick was describing, we are in a

:09:54. > :09:59.political dogfight and all those kind of questions are coming up. Gun

:10:00. > :10:02.control, hate crimes, and what to do about Islamic extremists that are

:10:03. > :10:07.home-grown. I'm sure Barrick Bama would love to make progress for the

:10:08. > :10:14.end of his presidency but people are deeply entrenched in this country on

:10:15. > :10:18.the question of gun rights. Likewise on Islamic extremism and what is the

:10:19. > :10:20.right approach. I think what will happen is it will reinforce the

:10:21. > :10:28.views of those people who are already held -- who have already

:10:29. > :10:31.held deep convictions on these matters.

:10:32. > :10:34.A vote to leave the European Union could bring more cuts

:10:35. > :10:35.in public spending and affect the state pension.

:10:36. > :10:37.That's the latest warning from David Cameron,

:10:38. > :10:40.who said the British economy would experience a "lost decade"

:10:41. > :10:43.The Prime Minister said it was his duty to spell out

:10:44. > :10:46.the risks but Vote Leave said it was taking scaremongering

:10:47. > :10:55.to new levels, as John Pienaar reports.

:10:56. > :11:04.Cue camera five, the Prime Minister. Today ) Gary warning of the date may

:11:05. > :11:10.be the scariest so far. -- today's scary warning. You could lose out on

:11:11. > :11:14.your state pension. We could meet that by putting up taxes on

:11:15. > :11:19.hard-working people or by going back to borrowing more and putting our

:11:20. > :11:23.economy at risk. Or it could be cut. Cuts do things like pensions, or

:11:24. > :11:31.health, or other things. We do not have to vote for that and risk it.

:11:32. > :11:34.Yes, he did say pensions. How old are you? If you are as old as him,

:11:35. > :11:39.you will have found a big increase in your old age pension. Pensioners

:11:40. > :11:44.rights have been revered for years. In the latest escalation of threats

:11:45. > :11:47.and promises, the state pension protection has been dragged into

:11:48. > :11:54.doubt. It is called the triple lock. It always goes up with earnings,

:11:55. > :11:57.inflation by 2.5%. Benefits like free bus passes are protected. The

:11:58. > :12:03.Prime Minister has said in the next Parliament all of that could be

:12:04. > :12:06.threatened. It came as news to ministers in the capital to leave

:12:07. > :12:11.camp you would expect to be part of a policy statement like that. One I

:12:12. > :12:19.spoke to earlier said they did not like the surprise. The levels of

:12:20. > :12:26.fear had been amplified. Effectively, the Prime Minister is

:12:27. > :12:30.undermining our own manifesto promise on pensions. Another leader

:12:31. > :12:36.'s message, if Britain wants out, do not worry if the pound wobbles. Even

:12:37. > :12:40.if sterling were to fall a few percentage points after Brexit, so

:12:41. > :12:45.what? We have a floating currency and it will be good for exports. The

:12:46. > :12:50.sharpest warning today were streamed up in Downing Street. Statistics can

:12:51. > :12:54.seem a moat to everyday life. The talk of the NHS budget losing

:12:55. > :12:59.protection can seem general. The idea that pensioners could see state

:13:00. > :13:05.pensions pegged back is personal. If it sounded worrying to millions of

:13:06. > :13:09.older voters, it is meant to. Today, the Prime Minister took the debate

:13:10. > :13:11.and turned it into a dark choice for voters in what is becoming a bitter

:13:12. > :13:20.and tense campaign. One of the most prominent Leave

:13:21. > :13:22.campaigners, Michael Gove, the Justice Secretary,

:13:23. > :13:24.has told the BBC he believes ministers are actively working

:13:25. > :13:27.towards Turkey joining the EU, despite David Cameron's repeated

:13:28. > :13:29.assertions that Turkey won't be Mr Gove, whose father worked

:13:30. > :13:32.as a fisherman in Aberdeen, says his family has direct

:13:33. > :13:34.experience of EU policy and that's one of the reasons

:13:35. > :13:37.he's campiagning to Leave. Laura Kuenssberg went

:13:38. > :13:41.to Aberdeen to meet them. It is amazing to think

:13:42. > :13:43.it is 100 years ago. Growing up in the 70s,

:13:44. > :13:52.and Aberdonian schoolboy saw his dad's fish merchant

:13:53. > :13:54.business go to the wall. Now he is the Lord Chancellor

:13:55. > :14:02.and Ernie and Christine Gove are The family blamed the EU then

:14:03. > :14:06.and they blame it now. It just ruined the Scottish fishing

:14:07. > :14:09.industry because it just went I saw the pride my father

:14:10. > :14:12.and grandfather had in their Obviously it was very

:14:13. > :14:15.difficult to cope with seeing At the time I did not know

:14:16. > :14:22.what I would be doing I remember when I was at university,

:14:23. > :14:29.in the mid-80s, when there were debates about Europe,

:14:30. > :14:32.I remember feeling that some of the debates weren't rooted in real

:14:33. > :14:35.people's experiences. There was a lot of airy

:14:36. > :14:44.fairy the rising. As we talk this

:14:45. > :14:48.afternoon, ten days away from the vote, you cannot tell

:14:49. > :14:51.voters how our economy works. You cannot tell voters

:14:52. > :14:58.how we would continue to trade

:14:59. > :15:00.with the rest of the EU. I am not suggesting that Britain

:15:01. > :15:04.boldly goes where no man has I am suggesting that Britain

:15:05. > :15:07.becomes an independent, Lack of details being

:15:08. > :15:10.roundly and repeatedly attacked by the Prime Minister and

:15:11. > :15:12.the Chancellor, even accusing him and fellow outers of wilfully

:15:13. > :15:14.misleading the public. The Prime Minister started off

:15:15. > :15:30.giving you the fist of -- the choice to

:15:31. > :15:31.campaign against him. He said he wanted everything

:15:32. > :15:33.to be respectful. Now, he and others are

:15:34. > :15:35.going around saying, You and Boris Johnson

:15:36. > :15:38.aren't telling the truth. It has got a bit out

:15:39. > :15:40.of hand, hasn't it? You don't mind the Prime Minister

:15:41. > :15:45.calling you a liar? I am not a commentator,

:15:46. > :15:48.I am a participant in this. I cannot offer, and I will not

:15:49. > :15:50.offer, a running commentary on what any

:15:51. > :15:52.individual has said. I want him to stay as Prime

:15:53. > :15:58.Minister until 2020. But he will attack David Cameron's

:15:59. > :16:01.insistence that Turkey is not on its A leaked memo today,

:16:02. > :16:04.he says, adds to the evidence. I understand why there are some

:16:05. > :16:07.people who say that Turkey won't join the European Union any

:16:08. > :16:10.time soon but the evidence is that the British government

:16:11. > :16:12.and the European Union are actively working towards Turkey joining

:16:13. > :16:14.the European Union and Turkish citizens being

:16:15. > :16:19.able to travel throughout the EU. On home turf, EU

:16:20. > :16:21.fishing quotas mean, for years, many trawlermen have had

:16:22. > :16:24.dislike of Brussels, as well as the When I built this ship,

:16:25. > :16:30.I was a big player. But this decision is bigger

:16:31. > :16:34.than one vessel, one The people of this country

:16:35. > :16:39.have decided to use this debate as an opportunity to say

:16:40. > :16:42.that the assumptions that the political establishment have had

:16:43. > :16:49.have been wrong and they are going to send a very clear

:16:50. > :17:01.instructions, I think, to the establishment,

:17:02. > :17:04.that they want Sounds suspiciously like

:17:05. > :17:08.a prediction that the country will Both sides have ten

:17:09. > :17:11.days to persuade you. Michael Gove with his case

:17:12. > :17:15.for Leaving the EU. And later this week,

:17:16. > :17:25.we'll be talking to another senior

:17:26. > :17:26.minister, who'll be setting The English and Russian

:17:27. > :17:29.Football Associations have been given an official warning

:17:30. > :17:32.that their teams could be kicked out of the Euro 2016 tournament

:17:33. > :17:34.if there's further trouble The French Interior Minister has

:17:35. > :17:39.called for tough sanctions on England and Russia and urged

:17:40. > :17:42.the tournament's host cities to consider an alcohol ban

:17:43. > :17:43.around match days. Our sports editor,

:17:44. > :17:52.Dan Roan, has the latest. Any of this and you are out. The

:17:53. > :17:56.sternest of warnings from Uefa this afternoon after three days of

:17:57. > :18:01.violence on the streets of Marseille marred the build-up to England's or

:18:02. > :18:05.against Russia last night. European football governing body said it was

:18:06. > :18:08.disgusted by the hooliganism land in a statement said the two countries

:18:09. > :18:11.could be punished with a potential disqualification of their respective

:18:12. > :18:16.teams from the tournament should such violence occur again. This kind

:18:17. > :18:22.of behaviour is totally unacceptable and has no place in football. Today,

:18:23. > :18:27.Marseille's clean-up operation began with English fans left to reflect on

:18:28. > :18:30.potential consequences. It is daunting. I do not think it will

:18:31. > :18:39.happen. I think they will have to be a lot of trouble for it to happen.

:18:40. > :18:42.This evening, England are back here at their training base, training for

:18:43. > :18:45.their next match against Wales on Thursday. They do so with the threat

:18:46. > :18:49.of expulsion from this competition hanging over them. All too aware of

:18:50. > :18:54.their future involvement in Euro 2016 depends not only on results but

:18:55. > :18:58.on behaviour of their fans as well. England were denied a crucial win in

:18:59. > :19:02.Marseille by a late rush an equaliser. It is the behaviour of

:19:03. > :19:08.some supporters which could cost both teams did. Speaking before the

:19:09. > :19:12.Uefa warning, the FA said lessons need to be learned. I would not

:19:13. > :19:19.single out English fans. That does not mean there has not been

:19:20. > :19:22.behaviour which has been deplorable and embarrassing, it has been at

:19:23. > :19:26.that level. A lot of details need to be understood. The British and

:19:27. > :19:32.French police are working at seeing what has happened. The violence

:19:33. > :19:40.meted out is at a different level. Supporters are moving out of their

:19:41. > :19:45.area towards the England fans. English fans were attacked within

:19:46. > :19:51.the stadium last night. TRANSLATION: It is absolutely

:19:52. > :19:54.necessary that the National federations of countries whose

:19:55. > :19:57.supporters create incidents of this nature be punished for what

:19:58. > :20:06.happened. Inside the stadium that is a minium. Also outside stadiums. --

:20:07. > :20:10.minimum. The Government said it would send more police officers

:20:11. > :20:14.across the Channel to help the authorities would not worry is that

:20:15. > :20:17.the scenes at Marseille could be repeated in other host cities.

:20:18. > :20:19.Northern Ireland's first appearance at a major international

:20:20. > :20:21.tournament for 30 years saw them lose 1-0 to Poland

:20:22. > :20:25.The captain, Steven Davis, said the team had lacked some

:20:26. > :20:28.of the fight and determination that brought them to the finals,

:20:29. > :20:34.The party began long before kick-off.

:20:35. > :20:36.Northern Ireland's fans never expected

:20:37. > :20:43.How ever long it lasts, they're prepared to make the best of it.

:20:44. > :20:45.It has taken 30 years for Northern Ireland

:20:46. > :20:49.They have been carried here by an impressive unbeaten run.

:20:50. > :20:54.Early on, it was clear Michael McGovern would be busy.

:20:55. > :20:56.Poland poured forward but Michael O'Neill's men

:20:57. > :21:01.did not flinch, with wave after wave blocked by a wall of green.
