:00:19. > :00:22.Controversy has broken out in the race for the leadership

:00:23. > :00:26.Candidate Andrea Leadsom has suggested to The Times

:00:27. > :00:30.that she would be a better Prime Minister than her

:00:31. > :00:32.rival Theresa May - because SHE is a mother.

:00:33. > :00:36.This morning Andrea Leadsom criticised the newspaper's coverage,

:00:37. > :00:39.insisting everyone had an equal stake in the future of society.

:00:40. > :00:45.Here's our Political Correspondent, Eleanor Garnier.

:00:46. > :00:54.. So much more to give... The outsider in the race, the

:00:55. > :01:00.Eurosceptic Energy Minister, whose exciting traditional Tories but the

:01:01. > :01:04.mum of three is facing criticism. In an interview in The Times when she

:01:05. > :01:11.suggested being a parent made her a better choice as Prime Minister.

:01:12. > :01:21.I feel being a mum means you have a very real stake in the future of our

:01:22. > :01:25.country, a tangible take... This morning, outside her home in north

:01:26. > :01:28.Hamptonshire, he is defended her comments.

:01:29. > :01:33.I was repeatedly asked about my children. I repeatedly made it clear

:01:34. > :01:38.I did not want this to be in any way a feature of the campaign. I am

:01:39. > :01:43.disgusted at the way this has been presented. I want to be crystal

:01:44. > :01:46.clear that everyone has an equal stake in our society and in the

:01:47. > :01:51.future of our country. But being a mum was a big part of

:01:52. > :01:54.her message, during the referendum campaign.

:01:55. > :01:59.I did a stint as the City Minister, and I'm a mum... Comments that did

:02:00. > :02:06.not go unnoticed. I have to remind people at home if

:02:07. > :02:12.people are mistaken, that there are mums, dads, and began dads on this

:02:13. > :02:15.side of the argument. The journalist who wrote the story

:02:16. > :02:19.is standing by it. It was naive to make the comparison

:02:20. > :02:25.and expect it not to become an issue. She is try to become the

:02:26. > :02:28.Prime Minister of the country, judgment and character matter as

:02:29. > :02:33.well as policy. Theresa May released a pledge for a

:02:34. > :02:41.clean campaign. No official response from her today but she reposted it

:02:42. > :02:45.on social media. Despite appeals for unity, after a fractious referendum

:02:46. > :02:48.campaign, the Conservative leader race is off to a controversial

:02:49. > :03:01.We will not know until we get the results in September it is the

:03:02. > :03:04.Conservative membership not the general public that has the final

:03:05. > :03:08.say. There may be some members who want their Prime Minister and leader

:03:09. > :03:13.to be a mum but many others who say that they don't care, that it should

:03:14. > :03:17.not be used to get ahead during the leadership campaign. That is why we

:03:18. > :03:21.have had such a strong reaction to the comments with some senior Tories

:03:22. > :03:25.saying that the remarks are vile and others calling for an apology. Now,

:03:26. > :03:31.it is clear that she was not trying to be cruel, to Theresa May but what

:03:32. > :03:35.it has shown, I think, is her inexperience and some are saying her

:03:36. > :03:39.lack of judgment, which is crucial to being the Prime Minister. I have

:03:40. > :03:45.heard from Andrea Leadsom's team, who have said that they are putting

:03:46. > :03:47.in an official complaint to the Times.

:03:48. > :03:51.And in the last hour the Deputy Leader of

:03:52. > :03:54.the Labour Party has said he's called off crisis talks with union

:03:55. > :03:55.chiefs over the future of Jeremy Corbyn.

:03:56. > :03:57.Tom Watson said there was "no realistic prospect

:03:58. > :03:59.of reaching a compromise" - because of the party leader's

:04:00. > :04:02.Mr Corbyn has significant support among trade unions

:04:03. > :04:05.and party members - but the majority of Labour

:04:06. > :04:13.Police in Dallas have found weapons and bomb-making materials

:04:14. > :04:16.at the home of the man who murdered five officers in the city.

:04:17. > :04:20.Micah Johnson, who was killed by police after the attack,

:04:21. > :04:23.had said he'd wanted to kill white people -

:04:24. > :04:29.This report from our Correspondent, David Willis.

:04:30. > :04:32.In a sleepy Dallas suburb, the police recovered an arsenal

:04:33. > :04:35.of weapons and bomb-making equipment from the home of the man who carried

:04:36. > :04:41.And amongst the guns and the ammunition,

:04:42. > :04:44.they found his journal, containing combat tactics,

:04:45. > :04:45.a personal manifesto for his murderous rampage

:04:46. > :04:54.That attack plunged a previously peaceful protest into chaos.

:04:55. > :04:57.Shots rained down from a building overhead as the attacker,

:04:58. > :05:02.a 25-year-old black man, sought out white police officers...

:05:03. > :05:13.The gunman's been named as Micah Johnston,

:05:14. > :05:16.The police say he was armed with an assault rifle and wearing

:05:17. > :05:20.This was a man we gave plenty of options to give

:05:21. > :05:35.He had a choice to come out and we would not harm him

:05:36. > :05:51.# How sweet the sound...

:05:52. > :05:53.A prayer vigil at the Catholic cathedral here heard calls

:05:54. > :05:56.for an end to racism and what the priest called

:05:57. > :05:58.the endless military policeage of tragic events in America.

:05:59. > :06:00.As this city seeks to heal, it would perhaps be tempting

:06:01. > :06:03.to regard the killing of five American policemen as an isolated

:06:04. > :06:07.incident were it not for the fact that there are reports of three

:06:08. > :06:09.separate gun attacks on police officers in three separate states,

:06:10. > :06:17.The question now after a week of violence is what can be done

:06:18. > :06:24.David Willis, BBC News, Dallas, Texas.

:06:25. > :06:26.At Wimbledon, it's the final of the Ladies singles today.

:06:27. > :06:28.Serena Williams is going for her seventh title.

:06:29. > :06:32.If she wins, the American will draw level with Steffi Graf as the winner

:06:33. > :06:38.Williams is up against Germany's Angelique Kerber.

:06:39. > :06:40.That's it for now - the next news on BBC

:06:41. > :07:05.Yes, as the great British summer continues, you may wish to keep your

:07:06. > :07:10.umbrella handy. But a promising start to the weekend, this was a
