:00:21. > :00:26.Andrea Leadsom, one of the two candidates in the fight to become

:00:27. > :00:30.Conservative leader, has suggested to The Times that

:00:31. > :00:32.she'd be a better Prime Minister than Theresa May -

:00:33. > :00:37.Supporters of Mrs May - the rival for leader

:00:38. > :00:40.and who doesn't have children - have called the remarks offensive.

:00:41. > :00:42.Mrs Leadsom has criticised the newspaper for the way her

:00:43. > :00:50.Our Political Correspondent, Eleanor Garnier, reports.

:00:51. > :00:58.We have so much more to give. The outside in the race, the Eurosceptic

:00:59. > :01:02.energy Minister who is exciting traditional Tories. But the mum of

:01:03. > :01:10.three is facing criticism for an interview in the times where C --

:01:11. > :01:29.she suggested being a mum would make a better choice for Prime Minister.

:01:30. > :01:35.This morning, outside her home in Northamptonshire, she defended her

:01:36. > :01:40.comments. I was repeatedly asked about my children and I repeatedly

:01:41. > :01:44.made it clear that I did not want this to be in any way a feature of

:01:45. > :01:49.the campaign. I am disgusted at the way this has been presented. I want

:01:50. > :01:55.to be crystal clear that everyone has an equal stake in our society

:01:56. > :01:59.and in the future of our country. But being a mum was a big part of

:02:00. > :02:05.her message during the referendum campaign. I ran financial services

:02:06. > :02:09.businesses for 25 years and I did a stint as city minister and I'm a

:02:10. > :02:14.mum. It clear Andrea Leadsom was not trying to be cruel to Theresa May,

:02:15. > :02:18.but it has shown her inexperience and, some say, her lack of judgment,

:02:19. > :02:24.so crucial if you want to be Prime Minister. Her team are making an

:02:25. > :02:28.official complaint to the times, but the journalist who did the interview

:02:29. > :02:33.is standing by her story. I don't think it's got a journalism, I just

:02:34. > :02:37.think it's journalism, it's accurate journalism. I asked a question, she

:02:38. > :02:41.answered it, I reported what she said. She is trying to become Prime

:02:42. > :02:45.Minister of this country, judgment and character matters as much as

:02:46. > :02:48.policy. Yesterday, Theresa May launched this pledge for a clean

:02:49. > :02:54.campaign. There was no official response from her today, but she

:02:55. > :02:58.posted it again on social media. Despite appeals for unity, after a

:02:59. > :03:01.fractious referendum campaign, the Conservative leadership race is

:03:02. > :03:06.already off to a controversial start. Eleanor Barnier, BBC News.

:03:07. > :03:09.The Labour MP Angela Eagle has announced she'll launch a formal

:03:10. > :03:12.challenge to Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the party.

:03:13. > :03:14.It comes after talks between Labour's deputy leader -

:03:15. > :03:17.Tom Watson - and union leaders broke down over their continued

:03:18. > :03:25.Our Political Correspondent Iain Watson is at Westminster -

:03:26. > :03:28.and this rift in the Labour party over it's leadership appears

:03:29. > :03:35.Another extraordinary day in British politics. We should be getting used

:03:36. > :03:38.to them at Westminster. But this decision by Angela Eagle means the

:03:39. > :03:42.two main parties will be locked in a leadership contest this summer. It

:03:43. > :03:46.follows the angry breakdown of those talks between the unions. And a

:03:47. > :03:50.measure of how poisonous things are at the moment, the leader of the

:03:51. > :03:55.Unite trade union accused Labour's deputy leader Tom Watson for an act

:03:56. > :03:58.of sabotage or pulling the plug on those talks. Jeremy Corbyn is

:03:59. > :04:02.insisting he is determined to fight on. Speaking to a trade union

:04:03. > :04:05.audience in Durham today he said he wasn't under any pressure to resign,

:04:06. > :04:08.the people under real pressure in Britain where families trying to

:04:09. > :04:16.feed their kids. Another leadership challenge, from MP Tom Smith, is

:04:17. > :04:21.talking about his party splitting apart. It could be about something

:04:22. > :04:24.much bigger than that, not overstating this, it could be about

:04:25. > :04:28.the future of the Labour Party as we know it. In the past few minutes

:04:29. > :04:32.President Obama has said Americans of all races are outraged by

:04:33. > :04:37.yesterday's fatal attacks on the police. Five officers were murdered

:04:38. > :04:41.in Dallas by a man who later killed himself. Police found weapons and

:04:42. > :04:44.bomb-making equipment at the home of Michael Johnson. He said he wanted

:04:45. > :04:46.to kill white people, especially white officers. James Cook sent this

:04:47. > :04:53.report from Texas. In Texas, and across the United

:04:54. > :04:59.States, the men and women in blue are morning. The attack here in

:05:00. > :05:04.Dallas was the deadliest on law enforcement since 911. Denise's

:05:05. > :05:10.husband Mike was an officer here for ten years. Every night he came home,

:05:11. > :05:17.that was my perk, that he came home. And he did. We need to start loving

:05:18. > :05:24.one another instead of hating one another. I could Johnson was a US

:05:25. > :05:29.Army survey who served in Afghanistan. He told police he

:05:30. > :05:35.wanted to kill white police officers. This was a crime driven by

:05:36. > :05:40.hate. The men turning a peaceful process at police killings of black

:05:41. > :05:46.men into an act of violent revenge. In the 25-year-old's suburban home,

:05:47. > :05:51.they found more bombs and bullets. And a journal of combat tactics. Far

:05:52. > :05:55.from coming together after the latest killings, the US feels as

:05:56. > :05:58.divided as ever. In Atlanta and elsewhere thousands of Americans are

:05:59. > :06:02.still taking to the streets to protest against the police. And in

:06:03. > :06:08.Dallas they are preparing to say goodbye to five officers who lost

:06:09. > :06:12.their lives in the line of duty. At times, it feels like this has become

:06:13. > :06:18.the motif of the United States. This time, the shrine is dominated by the

:06:19. > :06:23.colour blue. The flowers, the prayers, the heartbreaking messages

:06:24. > :06:26.are the same. This, somehow, has become routine. James Cook, BBC

:06:27. > :06:31.News, Dallas. David Cameron says MPs will decide,

:06:32. > :06:33.in just over a week, The vote - on the proposal

:06:34. > :06:46.to replace the four submarines - will be held

:06:47. > :06:50.on the eighteenth of July. Serena Williams has won her seventh

:06:51. > :06:53.Wimbledon singles title - beating Germany's Angelique Kerber

:06:54. > :06:56.in straight sets. The victory means Williams has

:06:57. > :06:58.equalled Steffi Graff's record From Wimbledon,

:06:59. > :07:12.David Ornstein reports. The latest shot at history. For

:07:13. > :07:16.Serena Williams, the shadow of Steffi Graf looms large. A year

:07:17. > :07:21.spent chasing her grand slam singles record, now a fourth chance to match

:07:22. > :07:26.it. Among those to deny her, today's opponent, Angelique Kerber. Steffi

:07:27. > :07:32.Graf is her inspiration, double motivation. If the quality of past

:07:33. > :07:38.finals has been doubted, this one delivered. When the next rankings

:07:39. > :07:45.are published, these will be the world's top two. But Williams is

:07:46. > :07:48.number one and she eventually broke Kerber's resistance to edge an

:07:49. > :07:53.outstanding first set. And just look at what it meant. Kerber continued

:07:54. > :08:00.to play without fear, battling from the baseline, even resorting to

:08:01. > :08:09.close combat. Williams was down, but perhaps that was simply a rehearsal

:08:10. > :08:14.for her celebration. Game set and match Ms Williams. The ghost of

:08:15. > :08:19.Steffi Graf finally laid to rest. 22 and counting. It's been incredibly

:08:20. > :08:24.difficult not to think about it. I had a couple of tries this year, I

:08:25. > :08:29.lost to two great opponents, one of them being Angelique. It makes

:08:30. > :08:34.victory even sweeter to know how hard I worked for it. Thank you guys

:08:35. > :08:40.for being all here to see number 22, this is awesome. Records exist not

:08:41. > :08:45.only to be equalled, but broken, so can we expect more to tumble?

:08:46. > :08:49.Serena's not done, in my opinion, the look I saw on her face, the look

:08:50. > :08:54.in her eyes in her last dummy finals match, I am seen it for a long time

:08:55. > :08:57.on Serena's phase. She smashed the record of Steffi Graf and she is not

:08:58. > :09:03.over, she wants to break more records. There was also a landmark

:09:04. > :09:06.win for the host nation. Gordon Reid and Alfie Hewitt claiming the men's

:09:07. > :09:13.wheelchair doubles title, the first British pair to do so. Gordon Reid

:09:14. > :09:18.is back in action tomorrow, he plays in the first ever men's wheelchair

:09:19. > :09:22.singles final to be staged at the All-England Club. The big one is

:09:23. > :09:28.Andy Murray against Milos Raonic. Murray aiming for his second

:09:29. > :09:34.Wimbledon title. More to come through the evening on the BBC News

:09:35. > :09:37.Channel. I'll be back with the team for the late news at 10:15pm.
