:00:11. > :00:13.as Andrea Leadsom denies suggesting she'd make a better leader

:00:14. > :00:18.Her remarks to the Times newspaper were criticised by supporters

:00:19. > :00:23.of her rival Theresa May, who doesn't have children.

:00:24. > :00:25.But Mrs Leadsom's hit back at the way her comments

:00:26. > :00:32.I am disgusted at the way that this has been presented.

:00:33. > :00:36.I want to be crystal clear that everyone has an equal stake

:00:37. > :00:40.in our society and the future of our country.

:00:41. > :00:47.Jeremy Corbyn will face a leadership challenge -

:00:48. > :00:51.from his former shadow cabinet colleague, Angela Eagle.

:00:52. > :00:54.After the murders of police officers in Dallas -

:00:55. > :00:56.President Obama calls the killer a "demented individual" who wasn't

:00:57. > :01:02.And seventh heaven for Serena Williams with another

:01:03. > :01:10.Wimbledon title and a record equalling 22nd Grand Slam.

:01:11. > :01:15.It makes the victory even sweeter to know how hard I worked for it.

:01:16. > :01:18.And thank you guys for being out here to see number 22.

:01:19. > :01:44.The Conservative Leadership campaign has been hit by controversy

:01:45. > :01:47.after one of its candidates Andrea Leadsom appeared to suggest

:01:48. > :01:49.in a newspaper interview that being a mother would make her

:01:50. > :01:55.Her rival Theresa May is childless and her supporters strongly

:01:56. > :01:59.criticised the comments calling them offensive.

:02:00. > :02:01.Andrea Leadsom has however said she was misrepresented

:02:02. > :02:04.by the Times Newspaper and asked for a retraction as our

:02:05. > :02:11.Political Correspondent, Eleanor Garnier, now reports.

:02:12. > :02:16.The euro-sceptic energy minister who is exciting

:02:17. > :02:21.But the mother of three is facing criticism for an interview

:02:22. > :02:25.in The Times in which she suggested being a parent makes her a better

:02:26. > :02:41.Genuinely I feel being a mother means I have a very real state in

:02:42. > :02:47.the future of our country, a tangible stake. She possibly has

:02:48. > :02:52.nieces and nephews, lots of people, but I have children.

:02:53. > :02:54.This morning, outside her Northamptonshire home,

:02:55. > :02:57.I was repeatedly asked about my children, and I repeatedly

:02:58. > :03:00.made it clear that I did not want this to be in any way

:03:01. > :03:05.I am disgusted at the way this has been presented.

:03:06. > :03:08.I want to be crystal clear that everyone has an equal stake

:03:09. > :03:14.in our society and in the future of our country.

:03:15. > :03:17.But being a mum was a big part of her message during

:03:18. > :03:27.I ran financial services businesses for 20 years.

:03:28. > :03:32.I did a stint as city minister, and I am a mum.

:03:33. > :03:33.It is clear that she wasn't trying

:03:34. > :03:35.to be cruel to Theresa May, but it

:03:36. > :03:37.has shown her inexperience and, some

:03:38. > :03:38.say, her lack of judgment, crucial

:03:39. > :03:41.Her team are making an official

:03:42. > :03:47.But the journalist who did the interview is

:03:48. > :03:52.I don't think it is gutter journalism, it is

:03:53. > :04:01.I asked a question, she answered, it and I

:04:02. > :04:07.Theresa May made a pledge for a clean campaign.

:04:08. > :04:13.No official response from her today but she reposted it on social media.

:04:14. > :04:15.Despite appeals for unity, after a fractious

:04:16. > :04:21.referendum campaign, the Conservative leadership

:04:22. > :04:24.race is already off to a controversial start.

:04:25. > :04:35.The Labour party now faces its own leadership contest

:04:36. > :04:37.after the former shadow business secretary Angela Eagle

:04:38. > :04:39.announced she'll launch a formal challenge to Jeremy Corbyn.

:04:40. > :04:41.It comes after talks between Labour's deputy leader -

:04:42. > :04:44.Tom Watson - and union leaders broke down over their continued

:04:45. > :04:49.Our Political Correspondent Iain Watson reports.

:04:50. > :04:57.The band at the Durham miners far more harmonious relations between

:04:58. > :05:03.the Labour leader and his own MPs. Most wanting to go but apparently

:05:04. > :05:09.there are unstoppable force has met an immovable object. Jeremy Corbyn

:05:10. > :05:13.told an audience of trade unionists that he would not be pressured into

:05:14. > :05:18.resigning. There is no pressure on me, none whatsoever. The real

:05:19. > :05:23.pressure, the real pressure is when you do not have enough money to feed

:05:24. > :05:30.your kids. When you do not have a roof over your head. That went down

:05:31. > :05:32.well here but he will now face a leadership challenge at Westminster.

:05:33. > :05:40.The former Shadow Business Secretary Angela Eagle confirmed that she will

:05:41. > :05:45.now trigger a contest. She had been pushing Jeremy Corbyn to go

:05:46. > :05:49.voluntarily this week. Jeromy needs to stand down. Jeremy Corbyn needs

:05:50. > :05:53.to resign. She had been waiting to see if the Labour deputy leader Tom

:05:54. > :05:57.Watson could persuade his friends in the trade union movement to push

:05:58. > :06:00.Jeremy Corbyn aside. Today he concluded there was no point in

:06:01. > :06:05.further talks because the leader was not listening.

:06:06. > :06:10.But soon afterwards the general secretary of the biggest union in

:06:11. > :06:16.the UK accused the deputy Labour leader of an act of Savic as and a

:06:17. > :06:21.deeply disingenuous move. Eight out of ten of Jeremy Corbyn 's Labour

:06:22. > :06:23.MPs voted for a motion of no confidence in him so you might

:06:24. > :06:31.wonder why he has not been challenged already. The fear is that

:06:32. > :06:36.he might win any subsequent contest, because party members make a

:06:37. > :06:39.decision and not MPs. Aaron Smith has also talked openly of the danger

:06:40. > :06:44.of his party splitting but others said that a contest cannot be

:06:45. > :06:49.avoided. I nominated Jeremy and many in my constituency were involved not

:06:50. > :06:51.just in voting for him but supporting him and being active in

:06:52. > :06:56.his campaign. Since September or they have seen is stagnation at the

:06:57. > :07:01.top. If you go on the Labour Party website there are no policies,

:07:02. > :07:04.literally nothing saying what journey is trying to achieve.

:07:05. > :07:09.Tonight Angela Eagle was preparing for the formal launch of her

:07:10. > :07:12.leadership bid on Monday. Soon the contest could decide not just her

:07:13. > :07:16.future but that of the entire Labour Party.

:07:17. > :07:25.And what happens next? I suppose rival networks might exaggerate a

:07:26. > :07:29.bit but to be honest, this I think is the biggest crisis that the

:07:30. > :07:35.Labour Party has faced since the 1980s when the SDP split from the

:07:36. > :07:40.party. We had Owen Smith speaking about the dangers of a split and

:07:41. > :07:44.also Len McCluskey, the head of the Unite union, saying the party is in

:07:45. > :07:48.great peril. What happens next is a leadership challenge will be

:07:49. > :07:50.triggered, and if Jeremy Corbyn wins any contests, more moderate members

:07:51. > :07:55.of the Labour Party might decide to leave. In the interim the ruling

:07:56. > :07:58.National executive must decide on the rules of the contest and it is

:07:59. > :08:03.not even clear if Jeremy Corbyn would automatically be on the ballot

:08:04. > :08:06.for the contest or would have to go out and seek nominations from other

:08:07. > :08:11.MPs. It sounds like a technical point but it is crucial if on the

:08:12. > :08:13.strength of feeling against him at Westminster, they might decide they

:08:14. > :08:18.do not want on the ballot. In that case the party membership might be

:08:19. > :08:22.in open revolt, and we would see a nasty Civil War ripping out in the

:08:23. > :08:26.Labour Party all across the summer at a time when the Conservative

:08:27. > :08:27.Party are fighting their own leadership contest.

:08:28. > :08:30.Barack Obama says America is not as divided as some have suggested

:08:31. > :08:32.in the aftermath of the shooting of five policeman in Dallas.

:08:33. > :08:34.The President said there was sorrow and anger,

:08:35. > :08:38.He described the gunman Micah Johnson as a "demented"

:08:39. > :08:41.individual and said he did not represent African Americans.

:08:42. > :08:50.Our Correspondent, James Cook, is in Texas for us this evening.

:08:51. > :08:58.This attack in Dallas which left five police officers and the gunman

:08:59. > :09:02.dead has led to a tremendous amount of heartbreak but has also fuelled

:09:03. > :09:07.the sense that this is a country on edge. Bitterly divided, not least

:09:08. > :09:12.between supporters and opponents of the police. And today the president

:09:13. > :09:15.did his best to try to play down those fears.

:09:16. > :09:18.In Texas and across the United States, the men and women

:09:19. > :09:23.The attack here in Dallas was the deadliest on law

:09:24. > :09:31.Denise's husband Mike was an officer here for ten years.

:09:32. > :09:34.And every night he came home, that was my prayer,

:09:35. > :09:47.We need to start loving one another instead of hating one another.

:09:48. > :09:50.The killer Micah Johnson was a US Army reservist

:09:51. > :09:57.His social media postings reveal an interest in

:09:58. > :10:01.And he told police he wanted to kill white police officers.

:10:02. > :10:11.The gunman turning a peaceful protest at the police killings

:10:12. > :10:17.of black men into an act of violent revenge.

:10:18. > :10:20.In the 25-year-old's suburban home they found more guns and bullets,

:10:21. > :10:33.bomb-making equipment, and a journal of combat tactics.

:10:34. > :10:38.President Obama appealed for calm back home at a Nato summit. As

:10:39. > :10:47.painful as this week has been, I firmly believe that America is not

:10:48. > :10:51.as divided as some have suggested. But in many places the US appeals

:10:52. > :11:02.divided. -- feels divided. In Atlanta and elsewhere thousands

:11:03. > :11:05.of Americans are still taking to the streets to protest

:11:06. > :11:07.against the police. And in Dallas they are preparing

:11:08. > :11:10.to say goodbye to five officers who lost their lives

:11:11. > :11:12.in the line of duty. At times it feels like this

:11:13. > :11:14.has become the motif This time the shrine

:11:15. > :11:25.is dominated by the colour blue. But the flowers, the prayers,

:11:26. > :11:27.the heartbreaking The UK Anti-Doping agency has

:11:28. > :11:33.launched an investigation into claims that British athletes

:11:34. > :11:36.paid for performance enhancing drugs Kenyan police have already launched

:11:37. > :11:43.an inquiry after two doctors and a self-styled medic

:11:44. > :11:47.were secretly filmed by the Sunday Times newspaper making

:11:48. > :11:50.claims that they'd been paid by British athletes to administer

:11:51. > :11:54.a banned blood-boosting drug. UK Anti-Doping said the evidence

:11:55. > :11:56.presented by the Sunday Times is of grave concern and significant

:11:57. > :11:59.interest and it was being treated with the utmost

:12:00. > :12:09.importance and urgency. David Cameron says MPs will decide,

:12:10. > :12:11.in just over a week, on whether Britain should

:12:12. > :12:13.renew its nuclear The vote on the proposal to replace

:12:14. > :12:20.the four ageing Vanguard nuclear submarines, their missiles

:12:21. > :12:22.and nuclear warheads, With all the sport,

:12:23. > :12:31.here's Damian Johnson Serena Williams has won the women's

:12:32. > :12:36.singles at Wimbledon She beat Angelique Kerber of Germany

:12:37. > :12:42.in straight sets and has now equalled Steffi Graf's record

:12:43. > :12:45.of 22 grand slam titles, For Serena Williams the shadow

:12:46. > :12:55.of Steffi Graf looms large. A year spent chasing her grand slam

:12:56. > :12:58.singles record, now a fourth Among those to deny her,

:12:59. > :13:05.today's opponent, Angelique Kerber. Graf is Kerber's inspiration -

:13:06. > :13:10.double motivation. If the quality of past finals has

:13:11. > :13:15.been doubted, this one delivered. In the next rankings these will be

:13:16. > :13:20.the world's top two. But Williams is number one and look

:13:21. > :13:25.at what it meant to win set one. Kerber battled from the baseline

:13:26. > :13:32.and even engaged in close combat. Williams was down but perhaps

:13:33. > :13:34.that was simply a rehearsal The ghost of Graf finally

:13:35. > :13:43.laid to rest. It's been incredibly difficult

:13:44. > :13:50.not to think about it. I had a couple of tries this year,

:13:51. > :13:55.lost to two great opponents, one actually being Angelique,

:13:56. > :13:58.but you know it makes the victory even sweeter to know how

:13:59. > :14:01.hard I worked for it. Thank you guys for being

:14:02. > :14:04.here to see number 22. But records exist not only to be

:14:05. > :14:10.equalled but broken, She has matched the record

:14:11. > :14:17.of Steffi Graf but she's definitely not over, she wants

:14:18. > :14:19.to break more records. With the singles sorted,

:14:20. > :14:21.Serena was soon back on court joining forces

:14:22. > :14:26.with her sister, Venus. And they did exactly what they do

:14:27. > :14:29.best, winning a 14th grand slam The Williams sisters

:14:30. > :14:34.dominating the day - A British pairing has won the men's

:14:35. > :14:44.wheelchair doubles title Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid came

:14:45. > :14:49.from a set down to beat top seeds Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer

:14:50. > :14:52.from France on a tie break. Tomorrow, Reid competes

:14:53. > :14:54.in Wimbledon's first men's Lewis Hamilton will start tomorrow's

:14:55. > :15:01.British Grand Prix from Pole. The Mercedes driver beat his team

:15:02. > :15:04.mate and title rival Hamilton now has four

:15:05. > :15:07.British Grand Prix poles - Rosberg heads into the race 11

:15:08. > :15:16.points clear in the championship. Chris Froome has won stage eight

:15:17. > :15:19.of the Tour de France and moved The two-time Tour winner

:15:20. > :15:22.and defending champion took the yellow jersey

:15:23. > :15:25.with a stunning downhill attack. It was the fifth stage victory

:15:26. > :15:28.for a British rider this Tour - following three for Mark Cavendish

:15:29. > :15:32.and then Steve Cummings yesterday. Another Briton Adam Yates is second

:15:33. > :15:35.overall behind Froome. And there have been two bronze

:15:36. > :15:38.medals for Great Britain at the European Athletics Championships

:15:39. > :15:41.in Amsterdam this evening. Julian Reid claimed his first

:15:42. > :15:45.international medal Steph Twell came

:15:46. > :15:54.third in the 5000m. Just before we go, Britain's oldest

:15:55. > :15:56.person, Gladys Hooper from the Isle of Wight,

:15:57. > :16:02.has died at the age of 113. The former teacher, concert pianist

:16:03. > :16:04.and great-grandmother became the oldest person in the world

:16:05. > :16:08.to have a hip replacement last year. Mrs Hooper was born in London

:16:09. > :16:13.in 1903, the same year the Wright brothers made the first

:16:14. > :16:18.powered aircraft flight. You can see more on all of today's

:16:19. > :16:23.stories on the BBC News Channel.
