:00:40. > :00:46.Sonboly was armed with a 9mm pistol and later shot himself.

:00:47. > :00:56.Live now to Munich and our Chief Correspondent, Gavin Hewitt.

:00:57. > :01:03.For some time, Germany has feared that it, too could face a tax from

:01:04. > :01:08.groups with links to the so-called Islamic State. That didn't happen

:01:09. > :01:11.here. Instead, an 18-year-old who was highly disturbed and who liked

:01:12. > :01:14.watching violent videos brought terror to the streets of Munich.

:01:15. > :01:17.It was the third attack on civilians in Europe in eight days.

:01:18. > :01:22.A gunman killing nine people at random Munich shopping centre.

:01:23. > :01:27.It has left the country wondering where was safe, said Angela Merkel.

:01:28. > :01:30.The gunman was caught on camera opening fire.

:01:31. > :01:39.He has been named as David Ali Sonboly,

:01:40. > :01:51.The 18-year-old student had battled depression.

:01:52. > :01:55.Police found evidence that he had researched other

:01:56. > :01:57.attacks, including the killings in Norway five years ago

:01:58. > :02:01.by right wing extremist Anders Breivik.

:02:02. > :02:04.But the police say there were no indications so far the killings

:02:05. > :02:07.All the indications are that he was acting on his own,

:02:08. > :02:10.a sole perpetrator, and we believe there are no links

:02:11. > :02:13.After a recent attack here in Germany and elsewhere in Europe,

:02:14. > :02:16.the federal Government has been very keen to establish motive,

:02:17. > :02:19.to reach that point where it can say with confidence that the gunman had

:02:20. > :02:26.no links with Islamists or other militant groups.

:02:27. > :02:28.One of those who witnessed the shooting said the gunman seemed

:02:29. > :02:35.I thought he might've taken drugs or was drunk.

:02:36. > :02:37.I felt he was a complete amateur, he was definitely

:02:38. > :02:42.Police are investigating whether the gunman tried to lure

:02:43. > :02:44.young people to McDonald's by offering them free food

:02:45. > :03:00.The Government said the horror had been made much more difficult

:03:01. > :03:03.because there had been such terrible news from elsewhere in Europe

:03:04. > :03:07.We are in deep and profound mourning for those who will never return

:03:08. > :03:13.The families, siblings, friends, to whom everything will be void

:03:14. > :03:21.On the streets of Munich today, there was a sense of insecurity.

:03:22. > :03:31.I waited for an attack like that in Germany,

:03:32. > :03:36.but it didn't expected that it would happen in Munich.

:03:37. > :03:44.The German Chancellor described the attack as a night of horror.

:03:45. > :03:46.Over 2000 police deployed, a city's transport system shutdown

:03:47. > :03:52.The victims of yesterday's attack were predominantly young

:03:53. > :03:55.Three of the nine were Turkish, three were Kosovan,

:03:56. > :03:59.Chris Buckler's report on the victims contains some

:04:00. > :04:10.In Munich, many feel this shooting was an attack on a generation.

:04:11. > :04:13.The majority of those being mourned were teenagers,

:04:14. > :04:23.There are people here in need of support.

:04:24. > :04:27.Among them, Huseyin, who helped one of the young

:04:28. > :04:37.TRANSLATION: I was shocked, I was scared.

:04:38. > :04:41.And then I lay down here, right next to him.

:04:42. > :04:47.And then he looked me in the eyes, took one deep breath and died.

:04:48. > :04:54.I'll never be able to forget what happened.

:04:55. > :04:56.That teenager's friends brought pictures of him to place

:04:57. > :05:00.at the spot where he died, determined that he would be

:05:01. > :05:05.remembered in the street where they used to meet.

:05:06. > :05:08.It's insane, one of them says - why were young people

:05:09. > :05:15.Detectives are still struggling to try to understand why these

:05:16. > :05:18.murders were committed, but those questions of motivation

:05:19. > :05:26.are dwarfed here in Munich by simple, raw emotion.

:05:27. > :05:28.Alongside the grief, there is also a sense

:05:29. > :05:32.of vulnerability after this latest attack in Europe.

:05:33. > :05:40.The so-called Islamic State group says it carried out an attack

:05:41. > :05:43.on a protest march in the Afghan capital, Kabul, killing

:05:44. > :05:48.A further 200 people were also injured as a result

:05:49. > :05:55.The Taliban have condemned the attack.

:05:56. > :05:57.Holidaymakers trying to cross the Channel by ferry at Dover have

:05:58. > :06:01.faced a day of chaos because of severe delays.

:06:02. > :06:04.The port authority says motorists can expect delays of up to ten hours

:06:05. > :06:06.on the roads around Dover, because of extra French

:06:07. > :06:15.Stranded for hours, many were stuck in their cars overnight,

:06:16. > :06:17.some without food and water, not knowing when their

:06:18. > :06:23.The woman at the filling station told us that there

:06:24. > :06:27.is a six-hour delay right now, and so we decided to just go

:06:28. > :06:31.through to the ferry and look where we can get on.

:06:32. > :06:34.The motorway is full, full, full, people are waiting in the sunshine

:06:35. > :06:41.Where are the police controlling the traffic?

:06:42. > :06:44.I would like to see some traffic control.

:06:45. > :06:48.The reason for the delays was said to be heightened French security

:06:49. > :06:52.The Port of Dover said the French security booths were

:06:53. > :06:58.But the local MP said this didn't come as a surprise

:06:59. > :07:01.and the government and other agencies should have

:07:02. > :07:06.I don't think it's good enough to try to blame the French

:07:07. > :07:09.and French border controls following the Nice atrocities.

:07:10. > :07:12.It's totally understandable they should be concerned.

:07:13. > :07:14.What needed to happen, they should've planned ahead,

:07:15. > :07:18.They didn't, they weren't and that's why these people

:07:19. > :07:22.And once you arrive here in Dover, there's even more traffic

:07:23. > :07:26.and congestion coming from all directions.

:07:27. > :07:30.And they are all heading one way, towards the port just behind me.

:07:31. > :07:35.Some people very concerned they may not make their ferry this evening.

:07:36. > :07:38.In a bid to reduce disruption, Highways England advised people

:07:39. > :07:48.to allow extra time for journeys and use alternative routes.

:07:49. > :07:51.Two people have been seriously injured and another 13 hurt

:07:52. > :07:54.after a coach carrying a group of teenage pupils from a school in

:07:55. > :08:00.The bus went into a ditch at Lons-le-Saunier.

:08:01. > :08:03.It was heading towards Italy with almost 50 people on board.

:08:04. > :08:11.A trip to Italy ended here, on the side of a motorway in France.

:08:12. > :08:15.Of the 42 teenagers from Bourneside school in Cheltenham,

:08:16. > :08:18.two are now in a serious condition in hospital,

:08:19. > :08:22.13 more are being treated for minor injuries.

:08:23. > :08:26.French police say no other vehicle was involved in the accident.

:08:27. > :08:29.It seems the bus just veered off the motorway and ended up

:08:30. > :08:36.The investigation is still ongoing, but the speculation is the driver

:08:37. > :08:44.We do suppose the driver may have fallen asleep.

:08:50. > :08:55.Bourneside School has issued a statement saying it is deeply
