:00:00. > :00:00.The New York authorities say the bomb that exploded in Manhattan

:00:07. > :00:09.last night WAS an act of terrorism, but say there is no link

:00:10. > :00:17.29 people were injured, all have now been released

:00:18. > :00:21.from hospital but New Yorkers are asked to be vigilant.

:00:22. > :00:24.Everybody get off the street, let's go get off the street.

:00:25. > :00:26.There'll be a heightened police presence on the streets

:00:27. > :00:31.but the motive for the attack is unknown.

:00:32. > :00:37.This was a very serious incident, it's going to take a lot of careful

:00:38. > :00:40.investigation to get to the facts, and get to the truth.

:00:41. > :00:42.We'll have the latest live from New York City.

:00:43. > :00:47.With the Labour leadership result less than a week away,

:00:48. > :00:50.a stark warning from a former leader about the re-election

:00:51. > :00:54.The conflict against IS in Syria - tensions rise between Russia

:00:55. > :01:00.and the United States over the deaths of Syrian troops.

:01:01. > :01:02.And a third gold for Bethany Firth on the final day

:01:03. > :01:29.Officials in New York say last night's explosion in Manhattan -

:01:30. > :01:35.which injured 29 people - WAS an act of terrorism.

:01:36. > :01:37.But they've said no link with international groups such

:01:38. > :01:41.as so-called Islamic State has ben found.

:01:42. > :01:43.An extra one thousand police officers are being deployed at bus

:01:44. > :01:45.terminals, airports and underground stations,

:01:46. > :01:48.but there is no indication of the motive

:01:49. > :01:50.behind the bombing, which took place in

:01:51. > :02:00.Our New York correspondent Nick Bryant has this report.

:02:01. > :02:07.Everybody, get off the street! Lescott! These are the sort of

:02:08. > :02:13.scenes New Yorkers have dreaded for years. The fact and aftermath of an

:02:14. > :02:19.explosion in the heart of Manhattan. This was the moment the bomb off. A

:02:20. > :02:23.fireball that came with an incredibly loud bang. It had just

:02:24. > :02:29.gone 8:30pm, the middle of a Saturday night. The aim clearly was

:02:30. > :02:35.to maximise casualties. No wonder people sprinted in panic. The

:02:36. > :02:40.explosion was so big, it was like close, and people were running for

:02:41. > :02:46.their lives. Meijer I heard, boom, boom, two big noises. Turned around

:02:47. > :02:53.and I saw smoke shooting up over the tops of the buildings and frankly we

:02:54. > :02:55.began running. The route through Chelsea, fashionable neighbourhood

:02:56. > :03:00.were bars and restaurants are always credit at the weekend. Now it was

:03:01. > :03:04.strewn with wreckage. The police released a photo, angled container,

:03:05. > :03:09.the possible source of the explosion. Into the New York mad the

:03:10. > :03:15.emergency services to treat the. Dozens were injured although none

:03:16. > :03:20.sustained life-threatening injuries. Come with me, I'm holding it. As

:03:21. > :03:24.forensic teams combed the scene for clues reports came through that a

:03:25. > :03:29.second device had been found just a few streets away. We're just a

:03:30. > :03:33.bridge in 1am and police have just issued an emergency alert saying

:03:34. > :03:36.there is a suspicious package a couple of streets away, and telling

:03:37. > :03:42.people to stay away from their windows. This is what they'd found,

:03:43. > :03:46.a pressure cooker with wires and a mobile phone attached. Similar to

:03:47. > :03:49.the home made bombs left at the finish line of the Boston Marathon

:03:50. > :03:54.three years ago. The device was taken away by the bomb unit in a

:03:55. > :03:59.specially designed trailers so that robots could examine it. The New

:04:00. > :04:03.York authorities are saying that at this stage there is no evidence of a

:04:04. > :04:07.connection with international terrorism and the investigation is

:04:08. > :04:11.still in an early phase. We know there was a bombing but we have a

:04:12. > :04:18.lot more work to do to be able to say what kind of motivation was

:04:19. > :04:22.behind this. Was it a political motivation, personal motivation?

:04:23. > :04:27.What was it? We don't know yet. An extra 1000 officers are now

:04:28. > :04:37.protecting the city, high visibility presence at tourist sites like times

:04:38. > :04:39.Square. September is always a time of heightened security and concern.

:04:40. > :04:41.Only last week New York remembered the most dramatic day in its

:04:42. > :04:42.history, 9/11. This week world leaders gather here for the United

:04:43. > :04:51.Nations General Assembly. Nick, this afternoon we heard from

:04:52. > :04:54.the governor of New York as well as the mayor, how would you sum up the

:04:55. > :05:00.tone and approached the authorities are taking to this? The governor of

:05:01. > :05:04.New York has used stronger language than the mayor, Bill de Blasio. Each

:05:05. > :05:08.described this as an act of terrorism. He has said that there is

:05:09. > :05:13.no link with international terror groups, however. The New York City

:05:14. > :05:17.police Department has said no one has claimed responsibility, no group

:05:18. > :05:23.or individual and that may be significant, because last night in

:05:24. > :05:26.Minnesota, in the American midwest and man went on a stabbing rampage

:05:27. > :05:29.and stabbed eight people before being shot by police. And today the

:05:30. > :05:33.group calling itself Islamic State has actually claimed responsibility

:05:34. > :05:37.for that attack and said it was one of their supporters who carried it

:05:38. > :05:41.out. No such claim in this New York attack. Police are stressing at the

:05:42. > :05:45.moment that they should not be a rush to judgment. They are giving no

:05:46. > :05:48.indication of what the motivation could be. Nick Bryant, in New York,

:05:49. > :05:52.thank you. Here, with less than a week of

:05:53. > :05:55.the Labour leadership contest to go, the former party leader Lord Kinnock

:05:56. > :05:58.has given a stark warning about He told the BBC's Panorama programme

:05:59. > :06:02.that if Mr Corbyn defeats his challenger Owen Smith,

:06:03. > :06:04.he doesn't think he'll see another Our Deputy Political Editor

:06:05. > :06:19.John Pienaar reports. Doesn't look too worried, Desi? Good

:06:20. > :06:24.afternoon, nice to see you. Jeremy Corbyn Lenska sure that he has been

:06:25. > :06:28.re-elected as Labour leader next weekend, the chances are he will

:06:29. > :06:33.win, urged on by the devoted army of followers who have packed into

:06:34. > :06:37.campaign rally after rally. United we are very strong, united as a

:06:38. > :06:44.party we go forward to create that decent, better society. Thank you

:06:45. > :06:47.very much. Mr Corbyn looks unstoppable but can Labour reunite

:06:48. > :06:52.in the Civil War that has paralysed the party? Biggar hello, sorry to

:06:53. > :07:03.bother you, Owen Smith from the Labour Party. Owen Smith launched

:07:04. > :07:05.his leadership challenge claiming Jeremy was too divisive, left-wing

:07:06. > :07:08.and incompetent to lead Labour, let alone win an election. Two former

:07:09. > :07:11.leader it is worse than the 1980s when Neil Callan fought hard left

:07:12. > :07:15.infiltrators and faction in fighting engulfed the party. By any

:07:16. > :07:20.examination this is the biggest crisis that the Labour Party has

:07:21. > :07:26.faced. You believe you may not see another Labour government in your

:07:27. > :07:33.lifetime? I am 74 and unless things change radically and rapidly, it is

:07:34. > :07:38.very doubtful. Doubtful that I will see another Labour government

:07:39. > :07:43.elected. Here in Brighton at the local Labour MP, Peter Kyle, is a

:07:44. > :07:47.critic of Mr Corbyn and local left-wing activists want him sacked

:07:48. > :07:51.as a candidate. I think we are standing absolutely at the edge of a

:07:52. > :07:56.cliff. It might well be that one or other faction or both end up going

:07:57. > :08:00.over it. I really think it is not serious. Left-wingers in the town

:08:01. > :08:24.are campaigning hard for Jeremy Corbyn at us in other parts

:08:25. > :08:28.of the fears that some of infiltrators and the party to take

:08:29. > :08:30.control and push it further to the left, so-called entries. The local

:08:31. > :08:32.party chairman faces the threat of expulsion, he is under investigation

:08:33. > :08:35.for links to a controversial far left group. Adamson myself as an

:08:36. > :08:38.entry list, I think Labour is the place for my politics will be most

:08:39. > :08:40.effective, they have a history, I don't think you should ban people

:08:41. > :08:42.because you don't like their ideas. The leaders want loyalty from

:08:43. > :08:44.members including past opponents if he succeeds and there is this

:08:45. > :08:47.extraordinary promise that he will try to polish up his act. We all

:08:48. > :08:49.have to raise our game, learned lessons, I will be extremely honest,

:08:50. > :08:53.I've had enough of politicians who think they are God 's gift to

:08:54. > :08:57.politics on earth. We have made mistakes like anyone. We are willing

:08:58. > :09:02.to learn from our party particularly members who have been in this

:09:03. > :09:08.position before us. Tutoring from old hands? Why not? There is no sign

:09:09. > :09:11.of Labour can unite here, locally or nationally, and without reaching the

:09:12. > :09:16.millions of voters the opinion polls say have turned away at the party is

:09:17. > :09:18.facing a bleak future, broken as a force in British politics. John

:09:19. > :09:21.Pienaar, BBC News. And you can see that

:09:22. > :09:22.Panorama programme - At eight thirty tomorrow

:09:23. > :09:26.night, here on BBC One. There are reports that the Syrian

:09:27. > :09:29.city of Aleppo has been hit by air strikes for the first time

:09:30. > :09:31.since a ceasefire came Tensions have increased

:09:32. > :09:36.between the United States and Russia which brokered the deal,

:09:37. > :09:39.particularly after US-backed coalition aircraft accidentally

:09:40. > :09:40.struck Syrian government forces. Here's our Diplomatic Correspondent,

:09:41. > :09:47.James Robbins. A fragile ceasefire now

:09:48. > :09:51.looks all but smashed. Under its terms, Syrian government

:09:52. > :10:02.forces are permitted to attack jihadists, including

:10:03. > :10:04.so-called Islamic State. Precisely what they say

:10:05. > :10:07.their pictures today show. The Syrians were not expecting

:10:08. > :10:12.the US, also targeting IS,

:10:13. > :10:14.to bomb their ground forces Russia says American warplanes

:10:15. > :10:19.killed at least 60 Syrian soldiers Washington expressed

:10:20. > :10:31.regret, calling it unintentional but the damage

:10:32. > :10:32.is It is suspicious that the

:10:33. > :10:40.United States chose to conduct this Why all of a sudden

:10:41. > :10:48.United States chose to help the Syrian Armed Forces

:10:49. > :10:50.defending Deir ez-Zor? Russia needs to stop

:10:51. > :10:53.the cheap point scoring and the grandstanding and the stunts

:10:54. > :10:56.and focus on what matters which is implementation of something

:10:57. > :10:57.that we negotiated in The United States and Russia have

:10:58. > :11:01.been trading insults at the UN for decades, but the timing of this

:11:02. > :11:07.breakdown could hardly be worse. Just as President Obama and other

:11:08. > :11:10.world leaders start to gather here for their annual

:11:11. > :11:11.September global summit. Hopes for a tentative Syrian peace

:11:12. > :11:14.deal were never high, they have been fading over the past few

:11:15. > :11:18.days but now they look even more The current ceasefire deal

:11:19. > :11:21.agreed by the US and It was meant to stop air strikes

:11:22. > :11:29.by President Assad's Russian backed It should be leading to co-ordinated

:11:30. > :11:40.air strikes by the US and Russia against UN-designated terrorists,

:11:41. > :11:49.including IS, but the entire deal, including safe passage for aid

:11:50. > :12:00.to besieged civilians is now at risk people of Aleppo who are

:12:01. > :12:08.reported to be under Syrian air attack for

:12:09. > :12:11.They were meant to be among the first

:12:12. > :12:13.topped by the ceasefire, leading to possible long-term peace but all

:12:14. > :12:16.that depended on growing trust particularly between the US and

:12:17. > :12:17.Russia, on opposite sides in this war.

:12:18. > :12:20.And there seems to be even less of that trust now.

:12:21. > :12:22.James Robbins, BBC News, at the United Nations in

:12:23. > :12:26.Football, and in this afternoon's Premier League action, Watford have

:12:27. > :12:28.beaten Manchester United for the first time in 30 years.

:12:29. > :12:30.This goal from substitute Juan Zuniga and an injury time

:12:31. > :12:33.penalty from Troy Deeney gave Watford a 3-1 win at Vicarage Road

:12:34. > :12:36.and consigned Jose Mourinho's side to their third defeat in a week.

:12:37. > :12:38.In tennis, Andy Murray battled through injury to take

:12:39. > :12:40.Great Britain's Davis Cup semi-final tie with Argentina

:12:41. > :12:50.Murray beat Guido Pelle in straight sets.

:12:51. > :12:54.That's Dan Evans has just lost the Deeside and 3-1 which means that

:12:55. > :12:57.Argentina are through to the final. The Rio Paralympics are drawing

:12:58. > :13:00.to a close, with the final It will be a Games to

:13:01. > :13:04.remember for Paralympics GB who are in second place

:13:05. > :13:07.on the medals table. 64 of their 147 medals are gold,

:13:08. > :13:11.with another six added to the tally But as Andy Swiss reports from Rio,

:13:12. > :13:31.this has also been a sombre day This report contains flash

:13:32. > :13:34.photography. As fans arrive for the final day of competition the

:13:35. > :13:37.Paralympic flag and the Iranian national flag were at half-mast in

:13:38. > :13:42.tribute to the death of an athlete whose death has shocked the sporting

:13:43. > :13:45.world. Bahman Golbarnezhad crashed on a downhill section of rest

:13:46. > :13:50.today's road race and suffered a cardiac arrest. He was described as

:13:51. > :13:56.a family man who leaves behind a wife and a son. Organisers described

:13:57. > :14:01.the news as heartbreaking. And athlete losing his life competing,

:14:02. > :14:06.doing what he loves, in a crash, but you know, in sport there are

:14:07. > :14:11.dangers. We know that. And we will investigate what happened, at the

:14:12. > :14:16.end of the day, it is just a tragedy. Yesterday's tragic news has

:14:17. > :14:21.cast a shadow of the end of these games but over the last two weeks

:14:22. > :14:25.these Paralympics have enjoyed enthusiastic crowds and a

:14:26. > :14:30.celebratory spirit, not least for the British team. Last night there

:14:31. > :14:33.was yet more success in the swimming pool, Bethany Firth becoming

:14:34. > :14:38.Britain's most decorated athlete of the games with her third gold medal.

:14:39. > :14:44.There was a silver for 13-year-old Abby Cana, youngest member of a

:14:45. > :14:50.British team that has won some 147 medals. They will be led into the

:14:51. > :14:54.closing ceremony tonight by Katrina Cox won titles in both cycling and

:14:55. > :14:59.athletics, one of the outstanding stars of an outstanding team. I was

:15:00. > :15:03.so overwhelmed, it's been such an amazing team with so many amazing

:15:04. > :15:07.performances, to be selected to represent them, it's an honour I

:15:08. > :15:13.can't even put into words how it made me feel. More disappointment

:15:14. > :15:16.today for David Weir, in the black helmet at the back, he crashed out

:15:17. > :15:22.of the wheelchair marathon and leaves Rio without one medal. But

:15:23. > :15:25.such frustration has been rare that the British team, a chance for

:15:26. > :15:31.signing and selfies, a picture perfect end to the golden games.

:15:32. > :15:34.Andy Swiss, BBC News, Rio. Thank you, Rio!

:15:35. > :15:37.There's more throughout the evening on the BBC News Channel,
