:00:22. > :00:27.In the past hour, the Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump
:00:28. > :00:29.has said he won't quit the race for the White House
:00:30. > :00:34.despite the furore over his lewd comments about women.
:00:35. > :00:37.In a tape from 11 years ago, he's heard bragging about using his
:00:38. > :00:40.celebrity status to grope women - comments which have attracted
:00:41. > :00:43.widespread condemnation from his own party.
:00:44. > :00:45.He's apologised, but insists he'll fight on.
:00:46. > :00:55.Here's our North America editor Jon Sopel.
:00:56. > :01:00.2005, and Donald Trump is on a promotional bus tour of the TV show.
:01:01. > :01:40.His lewd conversation, captured on a live microphone.
:01:41. > :01:46.Social media went into meltdown. The Republican leadership variously
:01:47. > :01:50.describing his comment is sickening, repugnant and abhorrent. Hours last
:01:51. > :01:57.night, Donald Trump was totally isolated. And then this: I never
:01:58. > :02:00.said I was a perfect person, nor pretended to be someone I am not. I
:02:01. > :02:06.have said and done things I regret, and the words that are released
:02:07. > :02:09.today on this more than a decade old video one of them. Anybody who knows
:02:10. > :02:18.me knows these words do not reflect who I am. I said it. I was wrong.
:02:19. > :02:24.And I apologise. But very quickly, contrition turned to defiance. Bill
:02:25. > :02:28.Clinton has abused women, and Hillary Clinton has abused, attacked
:02:29. > :02:32.and ashamed his victims. We will talk more about this in the coming
:02:33. > :02:37.days. See you at the debate on Sunday. But that threat to fight
:02:38. > :02:40.dirty is not what a lot of Republican senators and congressmen
:02:41. > :02:44.want to hear. They are now fearful about their own political survival
:02:45. > :02:47.and worry that Donald Trump will cost them their careers. Some are
:02:48. > :02:52.getting ready to abandon him. Others cross that line last night. It is
:02:53. > :02:57.sad, but I can't endorse Donald Trump for president after those
:02:58. > :03:01.comments and the way he said. There is no way I am voting for Hillary
:03:02. > :03:06.Clinton, but I can no longer endorse Donald Trump for president, I can't
:03:07. > :03:09.do it. Donald Trump will take to the stage tomorrow for the second
:03:10. > :03:12.presidential debate, his presidential ambitions seriously
:03:13. > :03:15.damaged, and a Republican party deeply uneasy.
:03:16. > :03:18.Jon, could Donald Trump be forced to stand down?
:03:19. > :03:27.I think if there was an easy way for the Republican party to dump trump,
:03:28. > :03:32.there are many in the party would love that option, but it is more
:03:33. > :03:36.complicated than that. We have already had more people coming out
:03:37. > :03:40.today saying that he should go, the New Hampshire senator said that and
:03:41. > :03:46.others as well. But people have already started voting in several
:03:47. > :03:49.states. Barack Obama cast his vote yesterday, and Donald Trump has said
:03:50. > :03:54.there is zero chance he is quitting. That said, Donald Trump said in that
:03:55. > :03:58.clip that we have just played anybody who knows me knows that is
:03:59. > :04:02.not who I am, in reference to the remarks he made. A lot of
:04:03. > :04:06.Republicans are hoping there are no more tapes, no more women, who are
:04:07. > :04:12.going to contradict that. Jon, thank you.
