:00:24. > :00:27.but apologises after the recording of him bragging about groping women.

:00:28. > :00:32.Anyone who knows me knows these words don't reflect who I am.

:00:33. > :00:37.I said it, I was wrong and I apologise.

:00:38. > :00:40.A number of prominent Republicans have urged him to stand down -

:00:41. > :00:45.his wife called his lewd comments "offensive".

:00:46. > :00:48.Also tonight: Police in Germany hunt for a Syrian man they suspect

:00:49. > :00:52.of planning a bomb attack after explosives

:00:53. > :00:57.Hurricane Matthew leaves nearly 900 people dead and hundreds

:00:58. > :01:01.of thousands in need of help in Haiti.

:01:02. > :01:03.And England take a comfortable win over Malta

:01:04. > :01:25.in Gareth Southgate's first match as interim manager.

:01:26. > :01:29.Donald Trump has rejected calls for him to withdraw from the race

:01:30. > :01:31.for the White House - saying there is "zero

:01:32. > :01:39.The Republican presidential nominee is facing widespread condemnation

:01:40. > :01:42.for bragging about groping women and using his celebrity status

:01:43. > :01:46.His comments emerged in a video from 11 years ago and have attracted

:01:47. > :01:49.widespread criticism from within his own party -

:01:50. > :01:58.Here's our North America Editor, Jon Sopel.

:01:59. > :02:02.2005, and Donald Trump is on a promotional bus tour

:02:03. > :02:42.for a TV show, his lewd conversation captured on a live microphone.

:02:43. > :02:46.Social media went into meltdown, with even Trump's running mate

:02:47. > :02:50.describing his comments as indefensible.

:02:51. > :02:51.The Republican leadership used the words "Sickening,

:02:52. > :02:58.Martha Roby, a Republican congresswoman, said "Donald Trump's

:02:59. > :03:01.behaviour makes him unacceptable as a candidate for president

:03:02. > :03:05.For hours last night, Donald Trump was totally

:03:06. > :03:11.I've never said I'm a perfect person, nor pretended to be

:03:12. > :03:16.I've said and done things that I regret, and the words released

:03:17. > :03:20.today on this more than a decade-old video are one of them.

:03:21. > :03:25.Anyone who knows me knows these words don't reflect who I am.

:03:26. > :03:29.I said it, I was wrong and I apologise.

:03:30. > :03:33.But very quickly, contrition turned to defiance.

:03:34. > :03:36.Bill Clinton has actually abused women, and Hillary Clinton

:03:37. > :03:42.has bullied, attacked, shamed and intimidated his victims.

:03:43. > :03:44.We will discuss this more in the coming days.

:03:45. > :03:49.But that sort of threat to fight dirty is not what a lot

:03:50. > :03:52.of Republican senators and congressmen want to hear.

:03:53. > :03:55.They're now fearful about their own political survival,

:03:56. > :04:00.and worry that Donald Trump is going to cost them their careers.

:04:01. > :04:02.Some are getting ready to abandon him.

:04:03. > :04:07.It's sad, but I can't endorse Donald Trump for president

:04:08. > :04:12.after those comments and the way he said them.

:04:13. > :04:14.There's no way I'm voting for Hillary Clinton,

:04:15. > :04:16.but I can no longer endorse Donald Trump for president.

:04:17. > :04:23.And even Melania Trump has joined the chorus of condemnation.

:04:24. > :04:25."The words my husband used are unacceptable

:04:26. > :04:29.This doesn't represent the man that I know.

:04:30. > :04:31.He has the heart and mind of a leader.

:04:32. > :04:37.I hope people will accept his apology, as I have".

:04:38. > :04:40.Donald Trump will take to the stage tomorrow for the second

:04:41. > :04:43.presidential debate, his presidential ambitions seriously

:04:44. > :04:49.damaged and a Republican party deeply uneasy.

:04:50. > :04:52.Jon is in Washington for us now - could this end his

:04:53. > :05:06.If there was a simple mechanism, a magic wand that could be waived to

:05:07. > :05:10.make Donald Trump disappear, I think there are many in the Republican

:05:11. > :05:15.leadership who would say, let's take it. A whole slew of Republican

:05:16. > :05:18.congressmen and women, senators and others have come out today saying

:05:19. > :05:22.that Donald Trump should stand down. It is clear that there are tensions

:05:23. > :05:26.at the top of the ticket between Mr Trump and Mike pence. So yes, there

:05:27. > :05:30.are a lot of people who want to go. But against that, you have the

:05:31. > :05:36.complications. There is rule nine of the constitution of the Republican

:05:37. > :05:38.party, which does allow you to replace a candidate, but the

:05:39. > :05:42.candidate needs to go voluntarily. Donald Trump has said he's not going

:05:43. > :05:46.to do that. You have also got the situation that voting has started in

:05:47. > :05:50.an awful lot of places, you have the US military who have started casting

:05:51. > :05:54.their ballots. What happens to all those votes if Donald Trump isn't

:05:55. > :05:58.going to play ball? You also have the millions of Trump supporters who

:05:59. > :06:03.want him to stay in the fight, all of which leaves the Republican

:06:04. > :06:06.leadership in a position where they are furious, where they are in

:06:07. > :06:08.turmoil and ultimately powerless to do anything about it. Thank you.

:06:09. > :06:10.German police have arrested three people in connection

:06:11. > :06:12.with their search for a Syrian-born man suspected of

:06:13. > :06:17.A raid of an apartment in the eastern city of Chemnitz -

:06:18. > :06:19.where the suspect was thought to be hiding -

:06:20. > :06:21.led to the discovery of what they call "highly

:06:22. > :06:26.Our Europe correspondent Damian Grammaticas reports.

:06:27. > :06:29.This is the man hunted by German police, Jaber al-Bakr.

:06:30. > :06:32.He's 22 years old, from Damascus in Syria, and German police said

:06:33. > :06:41.They believe he may have been planning a bomb attack.

:06:42. > :06:43.It was a tip-off from Germany's intelligence services

:06:44. > :06:49.They raided the apartment in Chemnitz, close to the border

:06:50. > :06:54.Jaber al-Bakr had already gone, but hidden inside the property,

:06:55. > :06:56.police searches unearthed high explosives, possible evidence

:06:57. > :07:06.we are busy with final measures here, and we will

:07:07. > :07:10.But our main focus now is on the manhunt for the perpetrator,

:07:11. > :07:15.It comes at a time of heightened concern in Germany.

:07:16. > :07:18.In July, a teenage Afghan refugee wielding an axe injured

:07:19. > :07:27.A week later outside a rock concert, a Syrian man awaiting

:07:28. > :07:29.deportation blew himself up, injuring 15.

:07:30. > :07:35.The so-called Islamic State group claimed both attacks.

:07:36. > :07:37.It seems the man at the centre of this latest incident,

:07:38. > :07:39.Jaber al-Bakr, was known to German authorities.

:07:40. > :07:43.Police said the explosives they discovered today were highly

:07:44. > :07:45.volatile and they had to evacuate people from the area before

:07:46. > :07:51.Meanwhile, three arrests were made nearby.

:07:52. > :07:54.Not Jaber al-Bakr himself, but three people who it's believed knew him.

:07:55. > :07:56.They were all taken into custody while police continued their hunt.

:07:57. > :08:06.In Yemen, rebel officials say more than 80 people have been killed

:08:07. > :08:10.and hundreds injured in a strike on a funeral in the capital, Sanaa.

:08:11. > :08:13.Houthi rebels said the hall had been hit by an air strike carried out

:08:14. > :08:15.by the Saudi-led coalition, which backs the Yemeni government.

:08:16. > :08:20.The coalition has denied carrying out a strike.

:08:21. > :08:22.Thousands of civilians have been killed since the war

:08:23. > :08:28.Nearly 900 people are now believed to have been killed

:08:29. > :08:31.by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti and officials warn the death toll

:08:32. > :08:34.could rise further as rescue teams reach cut off areas.

:08:35. > :08:38.Tonight, 10 people are reported dead in the United States as the storm -

:08:39. > :08:42.diminishing in strength - makes its way up the East Coast.

:08:43. > :08:49.This is Jeremie, a town of 30,000 people torn apart

:08:50. > :08:54.It has been cut off from the rest of the country for several days.

:08:55. > :08:58.Only now is aid beginning to arrive by air.

:08:59. > :09:00.The closer we got to Jeremie, the further from Port-au-Prince,

:09:01. > :09:06.Anything that was not concrete was flattened.

:09:07. > :09:09.Palm trees were bent over in half or completely

:09:10. > :09:16.There were several little fishing villages that just looked desolate.

:09:17. > :09:18.People are doing their best to rebuild their homes

:09:19. > :09:22.But Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and people

:09:23. > :09:25.are not expecting much help from their government.

:09:26. > :09:30.Around 1 million people are said to be in urgent need of assistance.

:09:31. > :09:33.TRANSLATION: I heard a boom and then the roof came off my house

:09:34. > :09:38.The wind took the roof and it was just completely gone.

:09:39. > :09:42.As you can see, it took away everything.

:09:43. > :09:48.Our houses are destroyed, everything is gone.

:09:49. > :09:50.In the US, the hurricane hit a glancing blow along

:09:51. > :09:55.There was damage, but it wasn't as bad as expected.

:09:56. > :09:58.Millions had heeded the call to leave their homes.

:09:59. > :10:01.Further north, the storm surge brought some of the highest

:10:02. > :10:05.tides on record, flooding many low-lying areas.

:10:06. > :10:09.The National Hurricane Center says the storm has now made landfall

:10:10. > :10:11.in South Carolina and serious inland flooding is expected.

:10:12. > :10:26.There has been another twist in the controversy which left the Ukip MEP

:10:27. > :10:30.Steven Woolfe in hospital following an altercation with fellow party MEP

:10:31. > :10:33.Mike Hookem. Mr Woolfe collapsed at the European Parliament in

:10:34. > :10:37.Strasbourg on Thursday. He is still in hospital tonight and our

:10:38. > :10:39.political correspondent Alex Forsyth joins us from there. Alex, what has

:10:40. > :10:49.Mr Woolfe been saying? Two days after this event, the

:10:50. > :10:53.details of what occurred between these two MEPs are still unclear.

:10:54. > :10:57.Yesterday, Mike Hookem described it as no more than a scuffle after a

:10:58. > :11:01.meeting of MEPs in the European Parliament became heated. He says he

:11:02. > :11:06.did not punch, hit or slap Mr Woolfe and today he tweeted a picture of

:11:07. > :11:10.his hands, which he says prove it. But this afternoon, a spokesperson

:11:11. > :11:13.for Mr Woolfe said experts independent of hospital staff had

:11:14. > :11:17.examined his injuries and they were inconsistent with just a seizure or

:11:18. > :11:20.a fall. Now Mr Woolfe remains in the hospital here tonight and is

:11:21. > :11:24.expected to be released tomorrow at the earliest, but these conflicting

:11:25. > :11:28.accounts of what has occurred will only escalate tensions in Ukip, a

:11:29. > :11:33.party already divided, and could fuel critics who claim Ukip is

:11:34. > :11:35.losing its credibility. Alex, thank you.

:11:36. > :11:45.With all the sport, here's Olly Foster at the BBC Sport Centre.

:11:46. > :11:49.Three home nations were playing World Cup qualifiers today.

:11:50. > :11:51.England got off to a winning start under interim manager,

:11:52. > :11:54.Gareth Southgate, beating Malta 2-0 in their World Cup

:11:55. > :12:05.He had asked his players to excite the sell-out crowd.

:12:06. > :12:09.Wembley Park relies on voices of calm, those who keep going despite

:12:10. > :12:14.it all. And what they have at the station, they now need in the

:12:15. > :12:15.stadium. Gareth Southgate is England's accidental steward,

:12:16. > :12:19.trusted to guide them through the aftermath of Sam Allardyce's sudden

:12:20. > :12:27.departure. First up, an easy one in theory. Malta are ranked 176th in

:12:28. > :12:32.the world, a nation associated with crosses, they couldn't handle Jordan

:12:33. > :12:36.Henderson's. First relief, then belief. England is wedded to a

:12:37. > :12:41.second. Dele Alli exchange passes, then shots. 2-0, maybe the new job

:12:42. > :12:45.might be fun. There will be tough decisions, though, like what to do

:12:46. > :12:49.with Wayne Rooney. Booed by some at the start, but close to a third

:12:50. > :12:55.goal. Andrew Holborn in Kingston upon Thames will remember that save.

:12:56. > :12:58.Few will remember this game. There has been no Southgate revolution. He

:12:59. > :13:04.is a familiar face and this might not be the time for more change. We

:13:05. > :13:10.know what Gareth is about. He has come in and made it clear what he

:13:11. > :13:14.wants and we all believe in it. This was an unremarkable fixture after a

:13:15. > :13:18.disappointing summer and in a time of turmoil, but still, people came

:13:19. > :13:22.to see it in their droves. For Gareth Southgate, a sign perhaps of

:13:23. > :13:30.his job's potential, but also its pressure. Patrick Gearey, BBC News,

:13:31. > :13:35.at Wembley. Scotland beat Malta 5-1 in their World Cup qualifier. They

:13:36. > :13:41.scored an equaliser in the final minute of full-time. Gordon

:13:42. > :13:48.Strachan's team face Slovakia next on Tuesday night.

:13:49. > :13:51.Kyle Lafferty scored twice late on as Northern Ireland completed

:13:52. > :13:54.a 4-0 win over San Marino at Windsor Park.

:13:55. > :13:57.They play the group leaders Germany next week.

:13:58. > :13:59.Wigan Warriors have claimed their fourth Super League title

:14:00. > :14:01.after they came from behind to beat local rivals Warrington

:14:02. > :14:11.The Wolves also lost the challenge cup final this season and were

:14:12. > :14:17.hoping to end their long wait for the league title.

:14:18. > :14:21.The centrepiece to the showpiece of the season. Old Trafford the stage

:14:22. > :14:24.for Super League's night of explosive drama. Warrington, 61

:14:25. > :14:28.years since their last title triumph, hoping it would finally be

:14:29. > :14:35.there at night. They started strongly too, taking a 6-2 lead. But

:14:36. > :14:39.the match was more hard graft than pure crap. Warrington thought they

:14:40. > :14:44.would edge closer to that elusive trophy, but the match officials had

:14:45. > :14:50.other ideas -- it was more hard graft than pure craft. Josh

:14:51. > :14:54.Charnley, in his final Wigan match before switching to union, grabbed

:14:55. > :14:58.the game's decisive score. Warrington were bloodied, bruised,

:14:59. > :15:03.but refused to be beaten. But as has so often been the case, came up just

:15:04. > :15:07.short. The final chapter to a compelling season had no happy

:15:08. > :15:14.ending for Warrington. Wigan Warriors crowned champions.

:15:15. > :15:24.There could be a British double tomorrow, with Andy Murray and

:15:25. > :15:28.Johanna Konta reaching the finals. Just reaching the final means that

:15:29. > :15:32.Johanna Konta will be in the world top ten when the new rankings are

:15:33. > :15:34.released. Jo Durie was the last British woman to achieve that, back

:15:35. > :15:50.in 1984. Lewis Hamilton walked out of the

:15:51. > :15:51.meeting after qualifying, accusing the press of being disrespectful.

:15:52. > :15:53.That is all your sport. You can see more on all of today's

:15:54. > :16:16.stories on the BBC News Channel. Not much happening on the weather

:16:17. > :16:17.front across most of the
