:00:00. > :00:07.Ukip loses its only MP as Douglas Carswell quits

:00:08. > :00:14.He joined the party after defecting from the Conservatives in 2014.

:00:15. > :00:18.Now he says he's achieved his main objective.

:00:19. > :00:21.I went into Ukip and made the switch in order to get us out

:00:22. > :00:28.Theresa May means Brexit is in safe hands.

:00:29. > :00:33.Tonight, Nigel Farage said he jumped before he was pushed.

:00:34. > :00:36.We'll look at what is next for Ukip as a party.

:00:37. > :00:44.Fresh concerns over security at Westminster as footage shows

:00:45. > :00:47.Parliament's gates were left unmanned after Wednesday's attack.

:00:48. > :00:49.The human cost of the battle for Mosul as thousands

:00:50. > :01:07.And, police investigate as the bodies of two teenagers

:01:08. > :01:18.are found at the foot of cliffs in north Yorkshire.

:01:19. > :01:24.The UK Independence Party's only MP, Douglas Carswell, has announced

:01:25. > :01:30.He said he decided to leave because the party had

:01:31. > :01:33.achieved its goal of pulling Britain out of the European Union, adding

:01:34. > :01:38.He will now represent Clacton as an independent MP

:01:39. > :01:40.but there are calls for him to face a by-election.

:01:41. > :01:44.Our political correspondent Alex Forsyth reports.

:01:45. > :01:57.There's been no love lost between Douglas Carswell and some

:01:58. > :02:02.When he joined the party in 2014 it was a big deal.

:02:03. > :02:05.I am today leaving the Conservative Party and joining Ukip.

:02:06. > :02:09.But his relationship with the then leader soon soured.

:02:10. > :02:13.Differences in policies and personalities and today he quit

:02:14. > :02:18.Ukip saying the party's job was done now the country had backed Brexit.

:02:19. > :02:25.If other people want to carry it on, I wish them all the best.

:02:26. > :02:30.By quitting have you not put the final nail in Ukip's coffin?

:02:31. > :02:34.I went into Ukip and made the switch in order to get us out

:02:35. > :02:38.Theresa May means Brexit is in safe hands.

:02:39. > :02:41.No tears from Nigel Farage, the former party leader said

:02:42. > :02:43.Douglas Carswell jumped before he was pushed and was

:02:44. > :02:51.Current leaders who saw him as a cause of division agree.

:02:52. > :03:00.It really won't make very much difference to us other than drawing

:03:01. > :03:02.a line under something which has really caused nothing

:03:03. > :03:05.but sort of heartache for about a year, more than a year.

:03:06. > :03:08.Douglas was never that comfortable in the party and so I think that

:03:09. > :03:12.Douglas Carswell is duly elected as a member

:03:13. > :03:19.of parliament for the said constituency, thank you.

:03:20. > :03:22.Last time he changed allegiances the Clacton MP made big play

:03:23. > :03:25.of asking voters for approval out of principle, but not this time.

:03:26. > :03:28.If I was switching parties, if I was going from Ukip

:03:29. > :03:30.to the Conservatives, then absolutely I would feel honour

:03:31. > :03:35.The voters voted for a Ukip MP and now they're

:03:36. > :03:39.When I was a Conservative and I switched to Ukip I triggered

:03:40. > :03:42.a by-election, I think I was the first member of parliament

:03:43. > :03:45.in 26 years to insist upon doing that but I am not changing parties,

:03:46. > :03:57.In his constituency, some have questioned his decision.

:03:58. > :03:59.A disgrace really, he was doing well for Ukip.

:04:00. > :04:03.It's down to him at the end of the day if he wants to do that,

:04:04. > :04:07.Mr Carswell hasn't ruled out returning to the Tories

:04:08. > :04:10.but says for now he will be an independent MP.

:04:11. > :04:12.His parting gift to Ukip - further questions over the party's

:04:13. > :04:18.Alex Forsyth is in Westminster for us now.

:04:19. > :04:24.So where does this leave Ukip's future?

:04:25. > :04:29.Ukip's been plagued by bitter infighting and much has stemmed from

:04:30. > :04:33.differences between the former leader, Nigel Farage, and his

:04:34. > :04:37.supporters and Douglas Carswell and his supporters on key issues like

:04:38. > :04:41.the approach to the EU referendum and immigration. It's not a huge

:04:42. > :04:45.surprise that Douglas Carswell has left and many think this will be a

:04:46. > :04:48.chance to draw a line under what's been the cause of much division. He

:04:49. > :04:52.was the party's only MP. It won't make much difference to their

:04:53. > :04:56.influence in parliament because that was limited anyway. But it is

:04:57. > :05:00.important symbolically. Ukip always struggled to turn its popular

:05:01. > :05:04.support into parliamentary seats. The leader Paul Nuttall recently

:05:05. > :05:08.failed to win a by-election in Stoke. Now Douglas Carswell has

:05:09. > :05:12.chosen to quit three days before Theresa May's due to push the button

:05:13. > :05:17.and start the formal Brexit process. He says that will mean Ukip's job is

:05:18. > :05:20.done so once again the party is facing the question what does Ukip

:05:21. > :05:21.stand for now the UK is leaving the EU?

:05:22. > :05:37.Thank you. A former head of the

:05:38. > :05:39.Metropolitan Police has called for changes to security there,

:05:40. > :05:41.following Wednesday's attack. Former Commissioner Lord Blair said

:05:42. > :05:43.there should be a review One man, arrested in Birmingham,

:05:44. > :05:46.remains in police custody. Our home affairs correspondent

:05:47. > :05:48.June Kelly reports. Minutes after the terrorist

:05:49. > :05:50.attack in the precincts On the ground is constable Keith

:05:51. > :05:54.Palmer who was stabbed to death. His killer, Khalid Masood,

:05:55. > :05:56.has been shot by police. Meanwhile, armed officers stationed

:05:57. > :05:58.here have left the scene to investigate the commotion outside

:05:59. > :06:01.the gates where Masood's car has The gates, meanwhile, have been left

:06:02. > :06:05.unguarded and wide open, An understandable error,

:06:06. > :06:09.according to a former head of Scotland Yard who nevertheless

:06:10. > :06:12.believes that in future security here will have

:06:13. > :06:20.to be more stringent. I am absolutely certain

:06:21. > :06:27.there will be a review now of the kind of outer soft rim,

:06:28. > :06:33.always behind it is the inner core of armed officers, but PC

:06:34. > :06:36.Keith Palmer has paid for his life for that soft outer rim

:06:37. > :06:39.and I think his family, at least, and everybody else,

:06:40. > :06:41.needs the reassurance The BBC has obtained new footage

:06:42. > :06:44.of the police response. A fleet of cars carrying

:06:45. > :06:47.teams of marksmen racing This was shortly after

:06:48. > :06:51.Khalid Masood's trail of carnage Questions remain unanswered

:06:52. > :06:54.about his route to radicalisation. He was a violent criminal

:06:55. > :06:56.before converting to Islam One of his victims who survived

:06:57. > :07:06.but with serious injuries is Romanian tourist Andrea Cristea

:07:07. > :07:11.who was hurled into the Thames. She was in London with her partner,

:07:12. > :07:15.Andrei Burnaz, who was also hurt. In Romania, a friend paid tribute

:07:16. > :07:20.to the emergency services in London. TRANSLATION: We would especially

:07:21. > :07:22.like to thank the doctors and nurses, all the medical staff

:07:23. > :07:28.for everything they're And today at Scotland Yard,

:07:29. > :07:36.police officers who were part of the emergency response laid

:07:37. > :07:39.flowers in memory of their colleague There's growing concern

:07:40. > :07:48.about the fate of civilians in the Iraqi city of Mosul

:07:49. > :07:52.where government forces are trying to drive out

:07:53. > :07:53.so-called Islamic State. The United Nations has warned

:07:54. > :07:56.of a terrible loss of life, and tonight the US-led coalition

:07:57. > :07:59.said it was behind an airstrike which is believed to have killed

:08:00. > :08:02.dozens of civilians two weeks ago. Our Middle East editor Jeremy Bowen

:08:03. > :08:10.is in western Mosul. Thousands of people have arrived,

:08:11. > :08:21.have walked out of those parts of Mosul still controlled

:08:22. > :08:24.by Islamic State and it's a big area, in the last couple of days

:08:25. > :08:28.and they've arrived really with just the clothes they're standing

:08:29. > :08:31.up in and maybe a few They need food, they need

:08:32. > :08:39.water, they need shelter. as the one that may be coming,

:08:40. > :08:42.literally coming down that road, in the next weeks,

:08:43. > :08:44.from where the black smoke is, which is where the Islamic State

:08:45. > :08:47.positions are here in Mosul, they are apparently about 800

:08:48. > :08:50.metres, a kilometre, down that way. The people who have been coming

:08:51. > :08:57.in have been talking They've talked about air strikes

:08:58. > :09:16.that have come in in the last days and as well as killing people

:09:17. > :09:19.from Islamic State, have killed They've complained that

:09:20. > :09:22.the jihadists have used them as human shields but they have also,

:09:23. > :09:25.in tears and anger, spoken very bitterly about the effects of air

:09:26. > :09:27.strikes on civilians. I spoke to multiple witnesses

:09:28. > :09:30.who said that there are perhaps hundreds of bodies still lying

:09:31. > :09:34.in the rubble that The bodies of two 17-year-old

:09:35. > :09:48.boys have been found at the foot of cliffs

:09:49. > :09:50.at Saltburn near Middlesborough. Cleveland Police have begun

:09:51. > :09:53.an investigation and say the families of both teenagers

:09:54. > :09:55.are being supported Peaceful and calm, just

:09:56. > :10:06.as it was before 7.00pm last night when Cleveland Police received

:10:07. > :10:09.the first reports of What the police and coastguard

:10:10. > :10:18.discovered on arrival was far worse, it was the bodies of two

:10:19. > :10:23.17-year-old boys on a ledge. They were airlifted

:10:24. > :10:26.to the James Cook Hospital where they were pronounced

:10:27. > :10:28.dead on arrival. I was walking into town

:10:29. > :10:31.and there was loads of police and ambulance which I thought

:10:32. > :10:34.was really unusual for the area, I saw loads of police first

:10:35. > :10:38.and I wonder is it the right thing A popular walking spot,

:10:39. > :10:41.tonight those enjoying the area told us of the perilous nature

:10:42. > :10:43.of the cliff-tops. It does have some very sheer drops

:10:44. > :10:47.towards the edge but there is plenty of signage up advising to keep clear

:10:48. > :10:49.away from the cliff edge. But the path does go

:10:50. > :10:53.very close to it. The teenagers' families are tonight

:10:54. > :10:55.being supported by Cleveland Police while officers try to establish

:10:56. > :10:57.exactly how these Linsey Smith, BBC News,

:10:58. > :11:10.Saltburn-by-the-sea. European Union leaders have marked

:11:11. > :11:13.the 60th anniversary of the EU's founding treaty with a formal

:11:14. > :11:15.declaration promising The meeting came as tens

:11:16. > :11:21.of thousands of people protested in London against Brexit just four

:11:22. > :11:24.days before the formal process In the last hour, Merseyside Fire

:11:25. > :11:36.and Rescue say they're dealing with the aftermath of an explosion

:11:37. > :11:39.on the Wirral that is believed to have been caused

:11:40. > :11:41.by a suspected gas leak. They say it took place

:11:42. > :11:44.in the New Ferry area and they also have a special rescue team

:11:45. > :11:52.on their way. Network Rail say it's

:11:53. > :11:55.suspended trains in the area. The leader of Northern Ireland's

:11:56. > :11:57.cross-community Alliance Party, Naomi Long, has told her party

:11:58. > :12:00.conference that another election would be worse than a waste of time

:12:01. > :12:03.given Northern Ireland has no budget The East Belfast MLA

:12:04. > :12:06.was giving her first address as party leader having succeeded

:12:07. > :12:08.former Justice Minister It's a year since the EU and Turkey

:12:09. > :12:16.agreed a deal to stem the flow Under the agreement,

:12:17. > :12:20.all but the most vulnerable people would be returned to Turkey -

:12:21. > :12:23.on the condition the EU would take more Syrian

:12:24. > :12:25.refugees from camps there. But legal challenges

:12:26. > :12:29.and bureaucratic delays have left thousands of people stranded

:12:30. > :12:32.on Greek islands and the number of migrants arriving

:12:33. > :12:37.is again on the rise. Paul Adams sent this report

:12:38. > :12:40.from the Greek island of Keos. A year ago, these

:12:41. > :12:43.waters fell silent. A deal was struck,

:12:44. > :12:46.enforcement followed. On Keos the camps are

:12:47. > :12:58.overflowing once more, a surge of new arrivals joining

:12:59. > :13:01.those who have been trapped Abdullah arrived here the day

:13:02. > :13:05.the EU-Turkey deal went into effect. A day earlier and he

:13:06. > :13:07.could have moved on. But he's been stuck for over a year,

:13:08. > :13:10.long enough to draw unfavourable Under control Isis maybe

:13:11. > :13:21.they would kill you any second Here, they let your live

:13:22. > :13:31.because it's no reason to kill you. But other things, for example,

:13:32. > :13:33.they kill your hope, The Government-run camp was supposed

:13:34. > :13:46.to be a model reception centre but secret filming from inside shows

:13:47. > :13:49.a place migrants call "the cage" where new arrivals are held

:13:50. > :13:51.for the first few hours. An intimidating first glimpse

:13:52. > :13:54.of Europe and the start of a long bureaucratic process that seems

:13:55. > :13:56.designed to halt them People expected to spend here just

:13:57. > :14:00.a few days are stranded here for months which has impact

:14:01. > :14:03.on the psychology of people. They don't have the

:14:04. > :14:04.perception that tomorrow They think that this thing

:14:05. > :14:08.can go on for years. In January, he learned

:14:09. > :14:18.that his mother and sister I want safe country for me

:14:19. > :14:31.because I lose everything, The principle at the heart

:14:32. > :14:44.of the EU-Turkey deal is that Turkey, just over the water,

:14:45. > :14:50.is a safe place for refugees The Syrians in particular

:14:51. > :14:51.dispute that. They say that Turkey

:14:52. > :14:53.is not safe for them. A Greek court is due

:14:54. > :14:56.to rule on this soon. You can see more on all of today's

:14:57. > :15:12.stories on the BBC News channel. And do remember, in just a few hours

:15:13. > :15:16.the clock's go forward an hour, That's all from me and the team.

:15:17. > :15:35.Good night. Hello. It's been a cracking start to

:15:36. > :15:36.the weekend and there is more sunshine on the way
