:00:20. > :00:24.The Home Secretary, Amber Rudd, has said that the government

:00:25. > :00:27.will not shrink from taking action to remove material from the internet

:00:28. > :00:34.Ms Rudd also said the security services needed access to encrypted

:00:35. > :00:37.material on platforms such as the messaging service, Whatsapp,

:00:38. > :00:40.which was used by the Westminster attacker just before he killed four

:00:41. > :01:05.Scotland Yard believes all this was the work of one man acting alone.

:01:06. > :01:08.But was Khalid Masood encouraged in some way? He was active on the

:01:09. > :01:13.messaging app WhatsApp on his phone just seconds before he struck but

:01:14. > :01:18.the police are unable to see the content of these cryptic messages

:01:19. > :01:23.and in an interview this morning the Home Secretary said social media

:01:24. > :01:26.companies must do more to help the authorities. It is completely

:01:27. > :01:31.unacceptable, there should be no place for terrorists to hide. We

:01:32. > :01:34.need to make sure that organisations like WhatsApp and there are plenty

:01:35. > :01:38.of others like it do not provide a secret place for terrorists to

:01:39. > :01:42.communicate. It used to be people would steam open envelopes or listen

:01:43. > :01:46.in on phones when they wanted to find out what people were doing,

:01:47. > :01:50.legally, through warrants, but in this situation we need to make sure

:01:51. > :01:55.the intelligence services have the ability to get into in situations

:01:56. > :01:59.like encrypted WhatsApp. And her message was supported by the man

:02:00. > :02:03.running the EU crime-fighting agency. I agree with the call for

:02:04. > :02:06.changes to be made. What the solution for that is for her and

:02:07. > :02:10.other lawmakers to decide but from my point of view I would agree

:02:11. > :02:13.something has to be done to make sure we can apply a more consistent

:02:14. > :02:17.form of interception of communication in all parts of the

:02:18. > :02:23.way in which terrorists invade our lives. All messages sent on WhatsApp

:02:24. > :02:27.have end encryption which means they are scrambled and even if they are

:02:28. > :02:32.intercepted data cannot be read. But WhatsApp, which is owned by

:02:33. > :02:37.Facebook, said it had a duty to protect the private negations of its

:02:38. > :02:40.billion users worldwide. Here at Westminster at the tributes to PC

:02:41. > :02:44.Keith Palmer and the other victims continue to grow. The Metropolitan

:02:45. > :02:51.Police have now released more details about what was a brief but

:02:52. > :02:54.deadly assault. At 2:40pm on Wednesday afternoon Khalid Masood

:02:55. > :02:59.mounts the pavement on Westminster Bridge. He drives on and 30 seconds

:03:00. > :03:03.later crashes into the Palace of Westminster. The first 999 call is

:03:04. > :03:08.then received and have a minute later Khalid Masood is shot dead. A

:03:09. > :03:16.rampage lasting 82 seconds from start to finish. But for the police

:03:17. > :03:19.it is an ongoing and complex investigation. They have no wonder

:03:20. > :03:26.they may never understand why Khalid Masood carried out the attack, which

:03:27. > :03:31.has carried criticism of the prevent strategy, the current government

:03:32. > :03:34.policy for combating extremism. I think in its current form it has

:03:35. > :03:38.huge problems, it is broken, the brand is toxic. There are questions

:03:39. > :03:43.about the training and the trainers and a level of quality of training

:03:44. > :03:48.within schools, how it is being implemented on the front line and

:03:49. > :03:52.therefore what I have asked for is a pause, an independent review. Any

:03:53. > :03:56.changes will be too late for the victims of the Westminster attack

:03:57. > :04:00.including PC Keith Palmer. His family have thanked those who tried

:04:01. > :04:01.to save him and say they have been overwhelmed by the love and support

:04:02. > :04:06.they have received. Merseyside Fire and Rescue say

:04:07. > :04:10.a suspected gas explosion in the Wirral last night caused

:04:11. > :04:13.extensive damage and it could be several days before local people

:04:14. > :04:15.are allowed back into their homes. Dozens of people were hurt

:04:16. > :04:18.by the blast and several About 20 people living nearby have

:04:19. > :04:22.been moved to safety. The scale of the devastation shows

:04:23. > :04:30.just how powerful the explosion was. One building, housing three

:04:31. > :04:35.businesses, totally destroyed. This is what it looked

:04:36. > :04:40.like before last night. The blast was heard

:04:41. > :04:42.up to six miles away. The sound of the building

:04:43. > :04:45.blowing up was captured Two people were taken

:04:46. > :04:53.to a trauma unit in Liverpool 32 others were treated at hospitals

:04:54. > :04:59.in Wirral and Chester. There is a multitude of injuries

:05:00. > :05:02.that have happened but the two patients that have gone

:05:03. > :05:05.through to the major trauma unit at Aintree,

:05:06. > :05:09.they have significant injuries. The emergency services

:05:10. > :05:11.won't speculate on the cause of the blast but a number of local

:05:12. > :05:15.people had said they smelt gas yesterday and on Friday National

:05:16. > :05:19.Grid engineers were on the scene. This incident is likely to be

:05:20. > :05:23.protracted, this is likely to last several days,

:05:24. > :05:25.very significant damage So it will be some time before

:05:26. > :05:30.people will be allowed Some people whose homes had

:05:31. > :05:35.to be evacuated spent Nearby roads are likely to be

:05:36. > :05:43.closed for some time. Let's go to the scene

:05:44. > :05:46.of the explosion at New Ferry on the Wirral, our correspondent

:05:47. > :05:58.Linsey Smith is there We know some of those people remain

:05:59. > :06:01.in hospital this lunchtime and an investigation is taking place to

:06:02. > :06:06.find out how this happened. The clean-up operation will take some

:06:07. > :06:11.time, there is a car park about 150 metres away and that and all the

:06:12. > :06:15.vehicles in it are completely peppered with bricks, it travelled

:06:16. > :06:18.that far. Opposite was a Chinese restaurant which was very busy on a

:06:19. > :06:27.Saturday evening, the blast blew the windows through and debris went

:06:28. > :06:32.through the windows. Souris emerging, some people thought a bomb

:06:33. > :06:38.had gone off unto Calver, others dragging their friends and family

:06:39. > :06:42.out of debris. What remains is that we do not know which building the

:06:43. > :06:44.explosion happened then, the sentiment is that people are

:06:45. > :06:50.surprised and grateful there were not more people seriously injured.

:06:51. > :06:53.In Ohio - police say one person was killed and 15 others injured

:06:54. > :06:56.when at least two men opened fire in a nightclub in Cincinnati.

:06:57. > :06:59.They say hundreds of people were in the club at the time,

:07:00. > :07:01.and that it was a "horrific situation".

:07:02. > :07:03.The authorities say it's not clear what prompted the shooting

:07:04. > :07:11.Three people have been taken to hospital after a car mounted

:07:12. > :07:13.a pavement and hit a group of drinkers outside

:07:14. > :07:24.The police say the incident in Islington is not terror-related.

:07:25. > :07:27.The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says Labour will oppose plans to give

:07:28. > :07:29.ministers the powers to change some aspects of European

:07:30. > :07:32.laws, without needing the approving of Parliament.

:07:33. > :07:34.Speaking ahead of this Thursday's publication of a white paper

:07:35. > :07:36.on the Great Repeal Bill, he insisted that Parliament

:07:37. > :07:42.We need total accountability at every stage of this

:07:43. > :07:48.I understand there is going to be about 12 ancillary related bills.

:07:49. > :07:51.We're not going to sit there and hand over power to this

:07:52. > :07:55.Government to override Parliament, override democracy and just set

:07:56. > :07:58.down a series of diktats for what is going to happen

:07:59. > :08:01.We'd be failing in our duty as democratically-elected

:08:02. > :08:06.With me now is our political correspondent Mark Lobel -

:08:07. > :08:09.Mark tell us more about this Great Repeal Bill and what

:08:10. > :08:19.This is the process of repealing the 1972 act which gave EU law effect in

:08:20. > :08:24.this country by translating it into domestic law so there are no legal

:08:25. > :08:28.black holes. The government want to do that by giving ministers special

:08:29. > :08:32.powers to avoid parliamentary scrutiny on certain elements they

:08:33. > :08:36.think do not make sense in British law any more, for example if you

:08:37. > :08:40.wanted to tender a public sector contract you would have to publish

:08:41. > :08:45.it in an EU publication or mention an EU institution you do not need to

:08:46. > :08:47.mention any more. But Jeremy Corbyn is opposed to this and wants

:08:48. > :08:52.accountability at every stage of negotiations. In response to that of

:08:53. > :08:55.the Commons leader said every element of the special powers will

:08:56. > :08:59.be agreed in Parliament beforehand so we will get more details of what

:09:00. > :09:01.he means on Thursday but the bill will not be voted on until the

:09:02. > :09:05.spring. Thank you. The taxi firm Uber has

:09:06. > :09:07.suspended its pilot programme for driverless cars after an early

:09:08. > :09:09.model of its self-driving car The accident is the latest

:09:10. > :09:14.in a series of crashes involving It's not yet known whether the car

:09:15. > :09:18.was in self driving mode Uber said it caused

:09:19. > :09:28.no serious injuries. The first race of the new

:09:29. > :09:30.Formula One season, the Australian Grand Prix,

:09:31. > :09:32.has been won by Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel,

:09:33. > :09:36.his team's first victory since 2015. Lewis Hamilton finished ten seconds

:09:37. > :09:39.behind, with his Mercedes team-mate You can see more on all of today's

:09:40. > :09:56.stories on the BBC News Channel. The next news on BBC One

:09:57. > :10:13.is at 6:35pm, bye for now. If you are about to head out to the

:10:14. > :10:15.lawn it might need doing again by next weekend, good growing
