:00:21. > :00:24.North Korea has put what appear to be

:00:25. > :00:26.its first intercontinental missiles on display

:00:27. > :00:28.at a massive military parade in its capital, Pyongyang.

:00:29. > :00:34.Fears that it is moving ever closer to having a viable long-distance

:00:35. > :00:36.atomic arsenal has raised tensions, with President Trump

:00:37. > :00:39.sending an aircraft carrier to the peninsular as a warning.

:00:40. > :00:45.is one of a group of foreign journalists invited

:00:46. > :00:47.to the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, to witness its parade.

:00:48. > :00:52.His movements are being monitored and tightly controlled.

:00:53. > :00:56.As the parade began, the ground shook,

:00:57. > :00:59.and a city at the centre of a mounting crisis

:01:00. > :01:04.echoed to the sound of marching feet.

:01:05. > :01:07.Presiding over it all was Kim Jong-un,

:01:08. > :01:10.apparently untroubled by the international pressure

:01:11. > :01:16.over the now realistic prospect of this most totalitarian of states

:01:17. > :01:22.becoming a fully fledged nuclear power.

:01:23. > :01:26.And while President Donald Trump may be promising to stop it,

:01:27. > :01:36.This is state power expressed as mass unity, and it's meant

:01:37. > :01:41.to send two key messages - to the North Korean people

:01:42. > :01:45.that their young leader's grip on power is unassailable,

:01:46. > :01:52.and to the outside world that he commands massive military might.

:01:53. > :01:57."We will respond to nuclear war with nuclear war,"

:01:58. > :02:03.a senior official told the crowds - a statement given extra force

:02:04. > :02:08.by the rolling out of these weapons, which analysts say may be

:02:09. > :02:15.North Korea's first intercontinental ballistic missiles.

:02:16. > :02:20.But while it may be isolated, it's resilient and often rational too -

:02:21. > :02:27.it wants nuclear weapons not to use them but as a security guarantee.

:02:28. > :02:31.What message does this send to the outside world?

:02:32. > :02:35."It shows the great strength of Korea," this woman tells me.

:02:36. > :02:41."We are the most proud people in the world."

:02:42. > :02:45.The periodic crises have so far always blown over,

:02:46. > :02:51.but each time North Korea emerges one step closer to its nuclear goal.

:02:52. > :02:56.no-one has yet worked out how to stop its advance.

:02:57. > :03:05.And we can talk to Laura Bicker in Washington.

:03:06. > :03:08.Laura, President Trump has said that North Korea

:03:09. > :03:10.is a problem that will be taken care of,

:03:11. > :03:16.but of course the question remains - how?

:03:17. > :03:23.Welcome in the policy for now seems to be to exert extreme pressure on

:03:24. > :03:28.Jeong Jang, and deploying diplomacy and weaponry. The key was laid

:03:29. > :03:33.between Donald Trump and President Xi of China during talks last week.

:03:34. > :03:39.China is North Korea's only major ally, already China has banned

:03:40. > :03:44.imports of North Korean coal, cutting off that key export market.

:03:45. > :03:50.With the help of China, the US could push for more crippling sanctions,

:03:51. > :03:55.and in contrast to North Korea's isolation in the region, the US is

:03:56. > :03:59.proving it does have allies. The vice president, Mike Pence, is on

:04:00. > :04:03.the way to Seoul right now, and he will reassure Asian leaders of an

:04:04. > :04:08.ironclad commitment to stand by them and do whatever is necessary to keep

:04:09. > :04:12.the world safe. The Pentagon also has a naval strikeforce in the

:04:13. > :04:16.Korean Peninsula, including an aircraft carrier. Now, Donald Trump

:04:17. > :04:24.has already proved he is willing and able to act quickly and act alone.

:04:25. > :04:26.Those ships are a warning to Pyongyang that the US is ready if

:04:27. > :04:29.provoked. Everton Football Club has banned

:04:30. > :04:31.Sun newspaper journalists from its ground following an article

:04:32. > :04:34.written by the paper's columnist In it, he compared the intelligence

:04:35. > :04:38.of Everton footballer Ross Barkley The Mayor of Liverpool has called

:04:39. > :04:41.for the newspaper to sack Mr MacKenzie for making

:04:42. > :04:44.what he called "racial slurs". Our correspondent Frankie McCamley

:04:45. > :04:58.is at Goodison Park. Well, arriving here this morning,

:04:59. > :05:01.fans said they were angry and disappointed that the article

:05:02. > :05:05.written by the former editor of the Sun, Kelvin MacKenzie, but after

:05:06. > :05:10.Everton decided to ban Sun journalists from the ground, leaving

:05:11. > :05:14.this evening, fans were much happier, and the mood had somewhat

:05:15. > :05:17.lifted. However, many said considering the long history this

:05:18. > :05:22.city has had with the paper, the decision was long overdue.

:05:23. > :05:27.The footballer at the centre of it all - Everton footballer

:05:28. > :05:28.Ross Barkley, whose grandfather was Nigerian,

:05:29. > :05:32.And the man who wrote it, Kelvin MacKenzie, now suspended.

:05:33. > :05:35.He also claims the only other people in Liverpool earning as much money

:05:36. > :05:41.I've reported it to Merseyside Police,

:05:42. > :05:43.and they're investigating the complaint.

:05:44. > :05:46.I've also written to the Press Complaints Commission.

:05:47. > :05:50.The comments, I believe, were overtly racist.

:05:51. > :05:53.But the club reacted quickly, banning the Sun, stating

:05:54. > :05:58.the newspaper has to know any attack on this city is not acceptable.

:05:59. > :06:02.It follows a long-running hatred towards the newspaper,

:06:03. > :06:06.who blamed fans for the Hillsborough disaster that left 96 dead,

:06:07. > :06:15.with applause at today's match to mark the 28th anniversary.

:06:16. > :06:18.The Sun's publisher, News UK, has apologised

:06:19. > :06:21.for the offence caused, saying it was unaware

:06:22. > :06:26.of Ross Barkley's heritage and there was never any slur intended.

:06:27. > :06:28.Mr MacKenzie says it was beyond parody

:06:29. > :06:34.Outside the stadium, fans welcomed the news.

:06:35. > :06:37.What he said about Ross Barkley, it's shocking,

:06:38. > :06:41.I think it's disgraceful, the way that he spoke about Ross Barkley,

:06:42. > :06:44.and the way that he described the people of Liverpool,

:06:45. > :06:48.His article should be proofread anyway,

:06:49. > :06:50.it should be read by the editors,

:06:51. > :06:53.so for them to let that go to press, I think it's quite poor.

:06:54. > :06:56.But many will question why the paper, which he edited

:06:57. > :06:59.for many years, allowed the column to be published.

:07:00. > :07:02.The Sun, they knew enough to make sure

:07:03. > :07:05.that MacKenzie didn't refer to Liverpool, it's...

:07:06. > :07:10.especially on the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster,

:07:11. > :07:15.so it was a gross editorial oversight.

:07:16. > :07:17.It's understood Rupert Murdoch will be consulted

:07:18. > :07:19.before a decision is made about Mr MacKenzie's future,

:07:20. > :07:23.which may depend on a police investigation.

:07:24. > :07:27.Frankie McCamley, BBC News, at Goodison Park.

:07:28. > :07:30.A huge car bomb has hit a convoy of coaches carrying evacuees

:07:31. > :07:35.from government-held towns in Syria, killing at least 43 people.

:07:36. > :07:37.The powerful explosion caused widespread damage to the convoy

:07:38. > :07:41.and dozens more people have been injured.

:07:42. > :07:50.A suicide bomber is believed to have carried out this devastating attack.

:07:51. > :07:53.And this is what remains of buses carrying hundreds of people

:07:54. > :07:59.finally escaping their villages which have been besieged for years.

:08:00. > :08:02.This eyewitness says it's hard to describe what he's seeing -

:08:03. > :08:09.and there are dozens of burned-out vehicles.

:08:10. > :08:12.And amongst the dead in the buses and on the road

:08:13. > :08:20.The convoy had been held up on the road Aleppo since Friday night -

:08:21. > :08:23.this because of a hitch in the deal agreed

:08:24. > :08:28.between government forces and the rebels.

:08:29. > :08:31.But in the aftermath of this incident, the hope is

:08:32. > :08:35.that the convoys will start moving again as quickly as possible.

:08:36. > :08:47.Football now, and Tottenham are continuing

:08:48. > :08:50.to press leaders Chelsea at the top of the Premier League

:08:51. > :08:52.after beating Bournemouth 4-0 at White Hart Lane.

:08:53. > :08:54.There were goals for Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

:08:55. > :09:01.that Tottenham are used to seeing their hopes fade.

:09:02. > :09:07.if Chelsea falter, Spurs are waiting in the wings.

:09:08. > :09:09.Where once the gap at the top looked insurmountable,

:09:10. > :09:17.when Moussa Dembele drilled them ahead against Bournemouth.

:09:18. > :09:21.In the recent absence of Harry Kane through injury,

:09:22. > :09:27.Reunited, they combined for Tottenham to make it two.

:09:28. > :09:29.Spurs have turned White Hart Lane

:09:30. > :09:34.- no Premier League team has a better home record -

:09:35. > :09:38.and Kane, as he showed again, is one of the main reasons why.

:09:39. > :09:46.if Tottenham do push Chelsea all the way.

:09:47. > :09:49.The gloss was provided by Vincent Janssen.

:09:50. > :09:51.The importance of this win all too clear

:09:52. > :09:59.Formula One, and a Mercedes driver has got pole position for tomorrow's

:10:00. > :10:02.Bahrain Grand Prix, but it isn't Lewis Hamilton.

:10:03. > :10:04.His new team-mate this season, Valtteri Bottas of Finland,

:10:05. > :10:06.snatched the front spot in the dying seconds

:10:07. > :10:09.It's Bottas's first pole position of his career.

:10:10. > :10:16.Hamilton will start from second on the grid.

:10:17. > :10:18.There's more throughout the evening on the BBC News Channel.

:10:19. > :10:20.Also, we're back with the late news tonight

:10:21. > :10:24.at the earlier time of nine o'clock, so do join us then.
