:01:28. > :01:29.North Korea is moving ever closer to having a viable long-distance
:01:30. > :01:33.Our correspondent John Sudworth is one of a group of foreign
:01:34. > :01:35.journalists invited to the North Korean capital
:01:36. > :01:44.His movements are being monitored and tightly controlled.
:01:45. > :01:48.As the parade began, the ground shook,
:01:49. > :01:50.and a city at the centre of a mounting crisis
:01:51. > :01:57.echoed to the sound of marching feet.
:01:58. > :02:00.Presiding over it all was Kim Jong-un, apparently
:02:01. > :02:06.untroubled by the international pressure over
:02:07. > :02:09.the now realistic prospect of this most totalitarian of states
:02:10. > :02:13.becoming a fully-fledged nuclear power.
:02:14. > :02:19.And while President Donald Trump may be promising to stop it,
:02:20. > :02:30.This is state power expressed as mass unity, and it's meant
:02:31. > :02:34.to send two key messages - to the North Korean people
:02:35. > :02:39.that their young leader's grip on power is unassailable,
:02:40. > :02:44.and to the outside world that he commands massive military might.
:02:45. > :02:51."We will respond to nuclear war with nuclear war,"
:02:52. > :03:01.by the rolling out of these weapons which analysts say may be
:03:02. > :03:08.North Korea's first intercontinental ballistic missiles.
:03:09. > :03:15.But while it may be isolated, it's resilient and often rational too.
:03:16. > :03:19.It wants nuclear weapons not to use them but as a security guarantee.
:03:20. > :03:28.What message does this send to the outside world?
:03:29. > :03:31."It shows the great strength of Korea," this woman tells me.
:03:32. > :03:36."We are the most proud people in the world."
:03:37. > :03:39.The periodic crises have so far always blown over
:03:40. > :03:43.but each time North Korea emerges one step closer to its nuclear goal.
:03:44. > :03:47.no-one has yet worked out how to stop its advance.
:03:48. > :03:57.So what are the options to avert any potential crisis?

:05:05. > :05:13.The US could also push for more UN sanctions but critics believe that
:05:14. > :05:15.punishes the people of North Korea, not its leaders.
:05:16. > :05:17.The Pentagon has denied any suggestion of a pre-emptive
:05:18. > :05:25.But Donald Trump's actions in Syria prove he is a President prepared
:05:26. > :05:29.to take action quickly and without warning.
:05:30. > :05:33.US troops in Afghanistan are advancing after the dropping

:06:23. > :06:29.understanding is that is far from their minds at the moment.
:06:30. > :06:32.The policy seems to be more one of continued pressure, deploying
:06:33. > :06:36.diplomacy along with those noble strikeforce is, just to turn up that
:06:37. > :06:41.pressure a bit more. The most likely scenario if North
:06:42. > :06:46.Korea does test and other nuclear missile would be further sanctions.
:06:47. > :06:52.Already, China has banned imports of coal from North Korea, they could
:06:53. > :06:58.move to oil, stopping oil imports from the north. That could cripple
:06:59. > :07:04.North Korea's economy. When it comes to the test Donald Trump has had in
:07:05. > :07:11.his foreign policy strategy, it has been an evolving one. After months
:07:12. > :07:15.of isolationist talks, discussions putting America first, President
:07:16. > :07:20.Trump's views have put the US back at the centre of the world stage.
