:00:22. > :00:24.Good afternoon and welcome to the BBC News at One.

:00:25. > :00:26.More than 100 people have been killed in Afghanistan

:00:27. > :00:29.after an assault by the Taliban - on a military base in

:00:30. > :00:34.Militants disguised themselves as soldiers, before carrying out

:00:35. > :00:38.Those targeted were leaving a mosque, after Friday prayers.

:00:39. > :00:52.Our South Asia Correspondent Justin Rowlatt reports.

:00:53. > :00:58.It was during afternoon prayers that two suicide bombers blasted open the

:00:59. > :01:04.entrance to this army base in the north of Afghanistan yesterday.

:01:05. > :01:07.Eight other fighters, dressed in Afghan army uniforms, used heavy

:01:08. > :01:13.machine guns to attack the dining areas of the base and the mosque.

:01:14. > :01:17.Afghan troops have been pouring into the area. Eyewitnesses warned the

:01:18. > :01:25.death toll would almost certainly rise. One man told the BBC he had

:01:26. > :01:28.counted 165 bodies. The battle lasted for five hours, and today

:01:29. > :01:35.dozens of injured soldiers were being treated in a local hospital.

:01:36. > :01:39.TRANSLATION: When I came out of the mosque after prayers, three people

:01:40. > :01:45.with army uniforms and an army vehicle started shooting at us. The

:01:46. > :01:49.Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack and issued this

:01:50. > :01:54.picture of the men it claims were behind it, ten are now dead, one was

:01:55. > :01:58.captured alive. The assault on the army base is a shocking reminder of

:01:59. > :02:05.just how tough the ongoing battle in Afghanistan is. Last month in Afghan

:02:06. > :02:10.special forces helicopter landed on top of the military hospital in

:02:11. > :02:15.Kabul after it was stormed by gunmen disguised as doctors. About 50

:02:16. > :02:19.people died in that attack. Two and a half years after the International

:02:20. > :02:24.combat mission in Afghanistan ended and the Taliban now controls more

:02:25. > :02:29.than a third of the country. And with casualties amongst the Afghan

:02:30. > :02:33.forces running at almost 7000 a year there are questions about how long

:02:34. > :02:43.the Afghan army can continue to defend the ground it still holds.

:02:44. > :02:48.Justin Rowlatt Forced BBC News. -- Justin Rowlatt, BBC News.

:02:49. > :02:51.In the first weekend of campaigning in the general election the leaders

:02:52. > :02:53.of both main parties have been out and about.

:02:54. > :02:55.The Labour Leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has been speaking

:02:56. > :02:57.in Manchester and will be leafleting and door-knocking later.

:02:58. > :03:01.In the last few minutes the Prime Minister has been

:03:02. > :03:10.We are now only 47 days away from the general election. From what I

:03:11. > :03:15.believe will be the most important election for this country in my

:03:16. > :03:19.lifetime. Because this is an election which is about a future for

:03:20. > :03:25.our country. And it's about ensuring that this country has a strong and

:03:26. > :03:27.stable government, strong and stable leadership in the national interest.

:03:28. > :03:29.Our political correspondent Leila Nathoo joins me,

:03:30. > :03:32.Leila what are we expecting the parties to focus on today?

:03:33. > :03:39.We have clear pictures already from Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May. This

:03:40. > :03:43.question of tax is coming on strong. It is. It comes from Philip

:03:44. > :03:52.Hammond's comments yesterday when he appeared to hint at an end of a

:03:53. > :03:56.pledge not to raise National Insurance, income tax or VAT.

:03:57. > :04:00.Theresa May didn't say anything about this, but she always said the

:04:01. > :04:07.Conservatives would be the party of low tax, and stated the record of

:04:08. > :04:13.taking more people out of income tax than ever before. Jeremy Corbyn was

:04:14. > :04:16.also asked about tax. He said Labour would be ensuring that tax burdens

:04:17. > :04:21.did not fall on the shoulders of those on lowering comes. He vowed to

:04:22. > :04:24.take back billions of pounds he accused the Conservatives of, he

:04:25. > :04:28.vowed to take that back from big businesses and reversing what he

:04:29. > :04:32.called tax cuts. He is keen to make this election about schools,

:04:33. > :04:37.hospitals and housing. Theresa May with Brexit at the centre of her

:04:38. > :04:40.campaign. On this first weekend of campaigning it is becoming clear

:04:41. > :04:43.just how all the parties will be fighting it.

:04:44. > :04:45.Plenty to talk about in the weeks ahead. Thanks very much.

:04:46. > :04:48.The SNP's national executive has confirmed that their 54 MPs will be

:04:49. > :04:50.reselected as candidates for the general election.

:04:51. > :04:52.The party will also chose candidates in the five

:04:53. > :04:55.This includes the two represented by Natalie McGarry

:04:56. > :04:58.and Michelle Thomson, both elected as SNP MPs, but who now

:04:59. > :05:10.They are not eligible to stand for the party.

:05:11. > :05:12.The former Conservative cabinet minister, Sir Eric Pickles,

:05:13. > :05:14.has become the latest MP to announce that he won't seek

:05:15. > :05:18.Sir Eric - who has represented Brentwood and Ongar

:05:19. > :05:21.in Essex, since 1992, said he felt now was

:05:22. > :05:27.But says he will miss the Commons dreadfully.

:05:28. > :05:29.Clashes have broken out in the German city of Cologne

:05:30. > :05:32.as tens of thousands of demonstrators picket a hall

:05:33. > :05:35.where the anti-immigration AFD party is holding a conference.

:05:36. > :05:38.A huge police operation is being mounted, with up to 50

:05:39. > :05:43.thousand protesters expected to descend on the city.

:05:44. > :05:48.Our correspondent Jenny Hill is there.

:05:49. > :05:58.Good afternoon. This is how Cologne is responding to Germany's most

:05:59. > :06:02.controversial political party. Police expect up to 50,000 people to

:06:03. > :06:07.hold demonstrations and protests at various sites across the city this

:06:08. > :06:12.afternoon. This is one of these protests going on behind me. You can

:06:13. > :06:17.see it is relatively peaceful. And quite musical, one chap has turned

:06:18. > :06:20.up with a grand piano. Police have reported a number of skirmishes

:06:21. > :06:24.elsewhere during one of those scuffles with police officer was

:06:25. > :06:28.injured, but not seriously we are told. One AFD delegate had an iron

:06:29. > :06:36.bar thrown at them as they tried to make their way into the conference.

:06:37. > :06:39.This morning we saw some protesters trying to prevent what they thought

:06:40. > :06:43.was another delegate getting through the police cordon to overhear where

:06:44. > :06:48.the conference is being held. A controversial conference. The

:06:49. > :06:52.fractures mood inside. AFD, a party in crisis, they are slipping in the

:06:53. > :06:56.polls, and the most recognisable figure from the party has announced

:06:57. > :07:01.she won't be standing to lead the party into the general election. She

:07:02. > :07:04.wants to take the party into a more mainstream direction. That has

:07:05. > :07:09.angered the more extreme members of the AFD. It'll be a controversial

:07:10. > :07:11.afternoon in the conference there. Thank you.

:07:12. > :07:13.The Sun newspaper has printed a formal apology to Everton

:07:14. > :07:19.Former editor Kelvin McKenzie compared the footballer

:07:20. > :07:21.to a gorilla in an article last week.

:07:22. > :07:23.Ross Barkley's grandfather is from Nigeria but the newspaper says

:07:24. > :07:26.Kelvin McKenzie remains suspended from The Sun.

:07:27. > :07:28.And an Italian professional cyclist has been killed

:07:29. > :07:32.after being hit by a van, while out training.

:07:33. > :07:34.37-year-old Michele Scarponi rode for the Astana team -

:07:35. > :07:43.The crash happened on a crossroads, near his home, in central Italy.

:07:44. > :07:45.With all the sport, Jessica Creighton at

:07:46. > :07:58.Good afternoon. An incredible start to the Scottish cup semifinal

:07:59. > :08:05.between the holders Hibernian and Aberdeen. Adam Rooney put Aberdeen

:08:06. > :08:12.ahead after just 11 seconds. Ryan Christie scored from a free kick,

:08:13. > :08:16.that made it 2-0. But Hibernian are back in it, thanks to substitute

:08:17. > :08:22.Grant Holt. It is half-time at Hampden Park.

:08:23. > :08:27.And the first of the FA Cup semifinals kicks off at 5:15pm. It

:08:28. > :08:32.is the best two teams in the Premier League, Chelsea against Tottenham,

:08:33. > :08:35.and it is live on BBC One. Manchester City women face a huge

:08:36. > :08:43.test this afternoon. They are up against defending champions Lyon in

:08:44. > :08:53.their first leg. This is their first season playing in the competition.

:08:54. > :08:56.Lyon have reached five of the last seven finals.

:08:57. > :08:59.Ronnie O'Sullivan was his usual entertaining self after reaching the

:09:00. > :09:05.quarterfinals of the World Snooker Championship. He hit a century break

:09:06. > :09:09.on his way to a 13-7 win over Murphy before explaining his current

:09:10. > :09:13.approach to the game. I think Snooker is a little bit like you are

:09:14. > :09:17.a pop star now. If you can make a good album every year you will do

:09:18. > :09:21.well. If you don't produce an album you go missing. I've decided to play

:09:22. > :09:26.a lot of exhibitions, do a lot of work, and it has taken the pressure

:09:27. > :09:29.off me, really. I don't feel I have anything to prove. I thought, I will

:09:30. > :09:34.give myself seven weeks to practice for this. It might have made a

:09:35. > :09:38.difference, maybe not, but, yes, I've put in more practising for it,

:09:39. > :09:43.but I haven't played for a year, basically. Great Britain are trying

:09:44. > :09:48.to get back into the world group of the Fed cup for the first time since

:09:49. > :09:52.1993. They are playing Romania. Joe Konta is set up against Sabrina

:09:53. > :09:57.could stay in the second singles match. She needs a win to level the

:09:58. > :10:04.tie after Heather Watson lost to the world number five, Simona Halep.

:10:05. > :10:08.Christina Horak who leads a 19 strong British squad at the world we

:10:09. > :10:18.live in the Bahamas this weekend. -- Chris

:10:19. > :10:24.takes less than a moment to realise you are at the Bahamas rather than

:10:25. > :10:30.Britain. But the majority of the world's best are here because of

:10:31. > :10:36.London which hosts the competition this summer. Teams need to race here

:10:37. > :10:40.to perform relay places there. It doesn't feel like we're at a

:10:41. > :10:46.Championships, but it is a serious event and are excited to compete.

:10:47. > :10:57.For Adam to Lely, fourth at the Olympics, this marks the start of a

:10:58. > :11:01.red to redemption. -- Adam Gemilli. I was gutted. I started sobbing. I

:11:02. > :11:08.broke down. I didn't know what to do with myself because in 20 seconds

:11:09. > :11:15.Mike dream was over. That is why the medals mean so much. -- my dream was

:11:16. > :11:19.over. They won gold at the 2004 Athens games but mistakes during the

:11:20. > :11:25.changeover is at Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016 cost the

:11:26. > :11:29.men potential medals in all of those events. The women excelled at the

:11:30. > :11:34.Olympics, claiming two bronze medals. They now want to establish

:11:35. > :11:38.themselves as one of the world's best relay nations. We know it is

:11:39. > :11:42.going to be tough. Lots of other teams would have liked that bronze

:11:43. > :11:48.medal. They were capable of winning it. We have arrows on our backs. We

:11:49. > :11:53.are in a position of a huge advantage of coming in with loads of

:11:54. > :11:56.confidence and capability. The British team have enjoyed their time

:11:57. > :11:59.in the sun and the media spotlight so far this week and will be hoping

:12:00. > :12:08.this is the only time they dropped the baton in the Bahamas.

:12:09. > :12:13.That is all of the sport. Thanks very much. The next news on

:12:14. > :12:15.BBC One is at 4:30pm. Have a good afternoon.

:12:16. > :12:28.Quiet weather right now. But a cold snap is on the way, just a slight

:12:29. > :12:30.echo of winter but not until
