:00:22. > :00:26.Theresa May has said there will be no increase in VAT

:00:27. > :00:28.if the Conservatives win the general election.

:00:29. > :00:30.However the Prime Minister has given her clearest

:00:31. > :00:32.signal yet that her party will abandon its promise

:00:33. > :00:35.not to raise income tax or National Insurance contributions.

:00:36. > :00:38.Labour has also promised not to raise VAT.

:00:39. > :00:41.The Shadow Chancellor John Mcdonnell said he would end what he called

:00:42. > :00:44."giveaways to the rich", and Labour would protect

:00:45. > :00:54.Our political correspondent Leila Nathoo reports.

:00:55. > :01:01.In the swing of an election campaign, there is, for some, and

:01:02. > :01:07.unmentionable word. So far, Theresa May has skirted around the issue at

:01:08. > :01:12.whether her government would increase taxes but this morning she

:01:13. > :01:16.gave her strongest indication yet not to raise National Insurance,

:01:17. > :01:22.income tax of VAT. We have no plans to increase the level of tax, but I

:01:23. > :01:26.am also very clear I don't want to make specific proposals on taxes

:01:27. > :01:31.unless I am absolutely sure I can deliver on those. It would be my

:01:32. > :01:36.intentions of a Conservative government and a Conservative Prime

:01:37. > :01:43.Minister, to reduce the taxes on working families. Later, she went

:01:44. > :01:54.further in clarifying her plans. We won't be increasing VAT, but what I

:01:55. > :01:56.want to ensure is we are able to have the strong... You definitely

:01:57. > :02:00.won't raise VAT, that is a 100% commitment? Where will extra money

:02:01. > :02:03.come from to pay for schools, hospitals and social care? The Prime

:02:04. > :02:09.Minister hinted the long-term plan for that would be in her manifesto.

:02:10. > :02:16.Labour says it would make those at the top pay more. We would end the

:02:17. > :02:21.tax giveaways to the rich. We would demonstrate how we would fund those.

:02:22. > :02:25.Let me give this assurance, there will be no increases in income tax

:02:26. > :02:31.for middle and low earners. Labour is guaranteeing the state pension

:02:32. > :02:35.will continue to rise by 2.5% a year. Theresa May suggested she was

:02:36. > :02:39.considering a new way of calculating the increase. But Brexit looms and

:02:40. > :02:46.with the EU states negotiating around their position yesterday, the

:02:47. > :02:49.other opposition party sends an opportunity. The Labour Party are

:02:50. > :02:53.fighting amongst themselves and have given up opposing the government.

:02:54. > :02:58.The country needs a stronger position for the sake of democracy.

:02:59. > :03:03.We don't have too agree with me on everything to agree with me that

:03:04. > :03:07.Britain needs a strong opposition. The EU has been clear they have been

:03:08. > :03:12.clear they have to look after the interests of the EU 27. In the next

:03:13. > :03:18.parliament we have an important job of holding the current government to

:03:19. > :03:22.account. Theresa May doesn't want to discuss our EU divorce bill before

:03:23. > :03:26.trade talks and says she is still happy to walk away without a deal.

:03:27. > :03:29.Ten years after the disappearance of Madeleine McCann,

:03:30. > :03:31.her parents have told the BBC they will do "whatever it takes,

:03:32. > :03:34.for as long as it takes" to find their daughter.

:03:35. > :03:36.Madeleine was three years old when she went missing

:03:37. > :03:38.on holiday in Portugal, while her parents were eating

:03:39. > :03:42.Speaking to Fiona Bruce, Kate and Gerry McCann spoke

:03:43. > :03:44.about the pain they continue to face, after a decade

:03:45. > :03:53.Every day is another day now without Madeleine.

:03:54. > :03:57.I think it's just that number, it's that 10-year mark which makes

:03:58. > :04:00.it more significant, I think because it's a reminder

:04:01. > :04:02.of how much time has gone by and obviously ten

:04:03. > :04:11.I think the day and the poignancy of it, we don't tend to go back

:04:12. > :04:17.But inevitably on anniversaries and her birthday, they are by far

:04:18. > :04:25.How different is your life now to what you must have imagined

:04:26. > :04:43.It's a hard one because it's such a long time.

:04:44. > :04:45.I think before, we felt we managed to achieve a little perfect

:04:46. > :04:49.We had that for a short period and you adapt

:04:50. > :04:53.Unfortunately for us, a new normality at the moment

:04:54. > :05:03.Last time we talked you told me how you were still buying birthday

:05:04. > :05:05.presents and Christmas presents, ten years now,

:05:06. > :05:12.There's a lot of thought goes into it, but I couldn't not.

:05:13. > :05:15.She's still our daughter, she will always be our daughter.

:05:16. > :05:17.The police have talked about one significant lead

:05:18. > :05:22.they are still pursuing, can you tell me anything about that?

:05:23. > :05:24.Very much, the investigation is in the hands of the

:05:25. > :05:28.They're clearly are ongoing enquiries.

:05:29. > :05:31.We've come a long way and there is progress,

:05:32. > :05:33.there are some very credible lines of enquiry the police

:05:34. > :05:37.And whilst there is no evidence to give us any negative news,

:05:38. > :05:45.In the hope that one day you'll be reunited with your daughter?

:05:46. > :05:51.No parent is going to give up on their child unless they know

:05:52. > :05:58.for certain a child is dead and we just don't have any evidence.

:05:59. > :06:01.My hope of her being out there is no less

:06:02. > :06:05.Kate and Gerry McCann, speaking to Fiona Bruce.

:06:06. > :06:08.MPs are calling for best-before dates on food to be scrapped,

:06:09. > :06:10.saying they're unnecessary and contribute towards unacceptable

:06:11. > :06:28.Food and Rural Affairs Committee says ?10 billion worth of food gets

:06:29. > :06:31.One of the world's most famous mountaineers, Ueli Steck,

:06:32. > :06:33.has been killed in an accident on Mount Everest.

:06:34. > :06:36.Steck, known as the Swiss Machine, was climbing alone

:06:37. > :06:39.for an attempt on the summit without oxygen.

:06:40. > :06:42.Steck, who was 40, had won many awards and was famed

:06:43. > :06:54.Mount Everest, dangerous and daunting, even for the most

:06:55. > :07:03.experienced of climbers. Just climbing from base camp to camp

:07:04. > :07:10.number two. Ueli Steck, also known as the Swiss machine, planning the

:07:11. > :07:13.detail of his route. We don't know if it is possible, that is the

:07:14. > :07:20.interesting thing. Nobody has done that before. Having the chance, it

:07:21. > :07:25.is there and it is possible, but I don't know. He knew the dangers, he

:07:26. > :07:31.had reached the summit without oxygen in 2012 and in 2015 he

:07:32. > :07:35.climbed all 82 Alpine peaks, over 4000 metres in just 62 days. He

:07:36. > :07:41.conquered the North face of the Eiger in less than three hours. Ueli

:07:42. > :07:46.Steck was on Everest to acclimatise before attempting a new route on the

:07:47. > :07:51.summit. If he had been successful, it would have pushed him into

:07:52. > :07:57.another sphere. A first ascent like that on Everest, it is just sinking

:07:58. > :08:01.in at the moment. He was known as the Swiss machine, really fit,

:08:02. > :08:09.lovely guy when you meet him. A bundle of energy. I have the peak

:08:10. > :08:14.again. Pretty cool. The climbing community has said it has lost a

:08:15. > :08:18.pioneer. He was known for his speed and ruefully methodical approach,

:08:19. > :08:25.with an ability to push push himself to the limit of human endurance.

:08:26. > :08:27.Donald Trump has marked the 100th day

:08:28. > :08:29.of his presidency with a speech defending his record

:08:30. > :08:32.Addressing thousands of cheering supporters in Pennsylvania,

:08:33. > :08:34.he insisted he's delivering his election promises and dismissed

:08:35. > :08:41.The British boxer, Anthony Joshua, has sealed his position

:08:42. > :08:44.as the world's leading heavyweight, by beating the former champion,

:08:45. > :08:46.Wladimir Klitschko, in front of a record crowd

:08:47. > :08:49.Despite being knocked down himself, Joshua rallied and came back

:08:50. > :08:54.to floor his Ukrainian opponent three times in the eleventh round.

:08:55. > :09:01.Our sports corresopndent Ollie Foster watched the fight.

:09:02. > :09:04.Anthony Joshua is burning brighter than ever but last night

:09:05. > :09:09.Wladimir Klitschko, at the age of 41, defying the march of time.

:09:10. > :09:11.In a stadium famous for knockout competitions, they came in record

:09:12. > :09:17.numbers to see AJ deliver the most important KO of his career.

:09:18. > :09:23.The Ukrainian rocked, but so resilient.

:09:24. > :09:25.In the next round, Joshua was stunned, hitting

:09:26. > :09:31.But this fight was only just getting started.

:09:32. > :09:33.Joshua had never been beyond the seventh round,

:09:34. > :09:36.this one went to eight, nine and ten and Klitschko looked

:09:37. > :09:38.to be on top by the time they reached the 11th.

:09:39. > :09:41.A round that will live long in the memory, Joshua putting

:09:42. > :09:48.The former champion showed unbelievable heart, but another

:09:49. > :09:51.flurry of punches signalled the end of the contest and that

:09:52. > :10:02.I say it to you again, I don't box just for the belts,

:10:03. > :10:04.I don't box just for money, I just enjoy it.

:10:05. > :10:12.I think tonight we all won, even if I didn't get the belt.

:10:13. > :10:15.Wembley is slowly returning to normal, but this night will not

:10:16. > :10:21.Cut through all the hype, this was one of the great

:10:22. > :10:23.heavyweight contests and Joshua is still improving, still learning.

:10:24. > :10:27.That is a frightening thought, especially for his next opponent.

:10:28. > :10:33.Olly Foster, BBC News, at Wembley Stadium.

:10:34. > :10:37.You can see more on all of today's stories on the BBC News Channel.
