:00:23. > :00:27.Theresa May has insisted that Conservative Party policy on income

:00:28. > :00:31.One of her senior Cabinet colleagues had suggested that the tax would not

:00:32. > :00:38.The Tory manifesto does not include a promise on income tax,

:00:39. > :00:40.but in a newspaper interview, the Defence Secretary,

:00:41. > :00:43.Sir Michael Fallon, said the only way people could be sure of not

:00:44. > :00:45.paying more tax was to vote Conservative.

:00:46. > :00:49.Our Political Correspondent Leila Nathoo reports.

:00:50. > :00:58.The last push to win over undecided voters and shore up support among

:00:59. > :01:03.the Tory base. Theresa May was forced to clarify the Conservatives'

:01:04. > :01:06.tax policies morning after senior cabinet members suggested income tax

:01:07. > :01:13.rises would be off the table. Opposition on tax has not changed.

:01:14. > :01:16.We set it out in the manifesto. -- our position. What people will know

:01:17. > :01:21.when they go to vote on Thursday is that it is the Conservative Party it

:01:22. > :01:25.always has been, and always will be a low tax party. It's our intention

:01:26. > :01:29.to further reduce taxes for ordinary working families. Her manifesto only

:01:30. > :01:33.ruled out increasing VAT claiming the Conservatives 's intention was

:01:34. > :01:37.to reduce taxes for working families. But with no firm promise

:01:38. > :01:41.on income tax, the Defence Secretary used an interview in a newspaper to

:01:42. > :01:46.certify high earners wouldn't pay more. And his Cabinet colleague gave

:01:47. > :01:50.a similar reassurance last night. You can confirm what Michael Fallon

:01:51. > :01:56.told the Telegraph, there will be no increase in income tax under this

:01:57. > :01:59.Conservative parliament if you win, is that correct? We are a party that

:02:00. > :02:03.has already taken 4 million of the lowest paid out of tax... No

:02:04. > :02:08.increase in income tax, will you pledge that with one week to go? We

:02:09. > :02:13.will bear down on taxation. We have absolutely no plans to raise income

:02:14. > :02:17.tax. Are you doing all right? I am now I have met you. Jeremy Corbyn

:02:18. > :02:20.says only those at the top will pay more tax under Labour back, but low

:02:21. > :02:25.and middle-income earners will be protected. We are saying 95% of

:02:26. > :02:31.people will pay no more tax under any of our plans. 5% will pay more

:02:32. > :02:35.and big companies will pay more. After the Conservative wobble in the

:02:36. > :02:41.polls, calming nerves about tax rises is a reliable way to rally

:02:42. > :02:44.core supporters. Theresa May and her supporters and opponents have just

:02:45. > :02:45.five days left to make sure their message gets through.

:02:46. > :02:47.Our Political Correspondent Tom Bateman has been travelling

:02:48. > :02:56.We know the Chancellor is looking for extra money after the changes he

:02:57. > :02:59.had to make to his budget. Are we any clear on what will happen to

:03:00. > :03:06.income tax if Theresa May is re-elected? Michael Fallon certainly

:03:07. > :03:10.appeared to go further than we have heard before, saying higher earners

:03:11. > :03:14.could be confident they could vote Conservative without increases in

:03:15. > :03:17.income tax. When I as the Prime Minister about this, could she

:03:18. > :03:21.categorically guarantee there would be no increases, she was a little

:03:22. > :03:24.less emphatic, as you heard, talking about firm intentions rather than

:03:25. > :03:28.any real clear and explicit promises. There may appear to be on

:03:29. > :03:34.the surface some inconsistency in the position, but the truth is more

:03:35. > :03:38.complex than that. With five days to go in campaigning, there is a

:03:39. > :03:42.tension between the party's desire to leave in the minds of voters the

:03:43. > :03:50.idea that they are the party of low taxation and this plays into that.

:03:51. > :03:53.However, Theresa May will be aware of the embarrassing U-turn they made

:03:54. > :03:57.National Insurance and be keen to box herself into firmly on the issue

:03:58. > :04:00.of taxation. Tom Bateman in Penistone, thank you very much.

:04:01. > :04:02.Police investigating the Manchester suicide bombing have made

:04:03. > :04:06.A 24-year-old man was detained in the Rusholme area of the city.

:04:07. > :04:10.Ariana Grande, the singer whose concert was targeted

:04:11. > :04:12.by the bomber, has visited some of her injured fans.

:04:13. > :04:24.Ariana Grande turned up just as these fans, injured in last month's

:04:25. > :04:29.bomb attack, were getting ready for bed. The Star's surprise visit to

:04:30. > :04:33.the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital left eight-year-old Lily

:04:34. > :04:39.Harris and feeling like a rock star, according to her dad. Our room the

:04:40. > :04:44.ward corridor, and she was working her way up. We were the last to be

:04:45. > :04:48.seen. I think I was as nervous as Lily. Her hands were shaking. She

:04:49. > :04:50.said she might need to go to the toilet, she didn't know what to do

:04:51. > :04:56.and she was really nervous. And then she came skipping onto our ward. She

:04:57. > :05:01.was brilliant. Preparations are underway for tomorrow's concert for

:05:02. > :05:05.those who died at Ariana Grande's gig. She will perform at the Old

:05:06. > :05:10.Trafford Cricket ground alongside other big names including take that,

:05:11. > :05:14.Katy Perry and Justin Bieber. And those at her gig were offered free

:05:15. > :05:19.tickets. Lilly expressed a wish to go. We didn't force it. We said if

:05:20. > :05:25.you want to go, we will make sure you get tickets. But if we get to

:05:26. > :05:27.the venue or we are on the way there and you don't want to go, we are

:05:28. > :05:33.more than happy to bring you home. It's what she wants. Last night, and

:05:34. > :05:44.emotional Robbie Williams dedicated his classic song Angels to the

:05:45. > :05:49.victims. Saint and's Square has become the focal point of tributes

:05:50. > :05:53.in the city. Manchester City Council said this could be the last weekend

:05:54. > :05:57.the flowers remain here. It says it will consider setting up a permanent

:05:58. > :06:09.memorial. Police investigation continues as they try to trace the

:06:10. > :06:12.bomber Salman Abedi's movements. They have arrested another man on

:06:13. > :06:16.suspicion of violating anti-terror laws. The victims were offered this

:06:17. > :06:19.moment of comfort by Superstar Ariana Grande. It has been shared by

:06:20. > :06:21.more than 100 million of her followers on Instagram.

:06:22. > :06:23.Twelve people have been reported killed following explosions

:06:24. > :06:25.at a funeral in the Afghan capital Kabul.

:06:26. > :06:28.It follows a huge bomb on Wednesday, in which 90 people were killed,

:06:29. > :06:37.Secunder Kermani is in Kabul for us now.

:06:38. > :06:47.The blast took place at a cemetery where a young man who was killed in

:06:48. > :06:55.clashes with the police was being buried. He was the son of a

:06:56. > :07:00.prominent local politician who had been taking part in a protest

:07:01. > :07:03.against the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan following

:07:04. > :07:09.the large suicide attack in Kabul earlier this week in which 90 people

:07:10. > :07:13.were killed. The Taliban have denied responsibility for both that attack

:07:14. > :07:17.and today's violence. Pictures on social media today, though, show a

:07:18. > :07:21.number of dead bodies at the scene. We have spoken to health officials

:07:22. > :07:25.who say they have received four bodies at hospitals already, and six

:07:26. > :07:30.injured people, but they expect the number to rise. The numbers of

:07:31. > :07:34.people killed in terrorist incidents in Afghanistan is increasing. Last

:07:35. > :07:42.year saw the highest ever recorded number of civilian casualties.

:07:43. > :07:44.It's derby day and the Champions League final is taking place in

:07:45. > :07:46.Cardiff. With all the sport,

:07:47. > :07:48.here's Mike Bushell The British and Irish Lions

:07:49. > :07:56.have started their tour of New Zealand with a victory,

:07:57. > :07:58.but it wasn't convincing against the Provisional Babarians,

:07:59. > :08:00.made up of part-time players. They will need to improve, with

:08:01. > :08:13.the first Test three weeks away. The fireworks were limited to the

:08:14. > :08:19.pre-match build-up. Taking on a Barbarians side featuring builders

:08:20. > :08:23.and painters should have been easy for the vastly experienced British

:08:24. > :08:25.and Irish Lions. Things got off to a stuttering start with Johnny Sexton

:08:26. > :08:29.missing a penalty before landing the first points of the tour. Blunt in

:08:30. > :08:32.attack, they were brittle at the back as the Barbarians looked the

:08:33. > :08:37.more likely to roar. They fell short at their first attempt, but gambled

:08:38. > :08:39.into the lead bank 's two maintenance engineer Sam

:08:40. > :08:44.Anderson-Heather. To rub salt into head coach Warren Gatland's wounds,

:08:45. > :08:48.his son Bryn Gatland added to the host 's total. Greig Laidlaw took

:08:49. > :08:52.over kicking duties from Johnny Sexton, but the Lions couldn't

:08:53. > :08:56.silence the lambs. Their resistance was stubborn until Owen Farrell

:08:57. > :08:59.entered the fray. Replacing Johnny Sexton he seized his chance to

:09:00. > :09:03.reclaim the fly-half position, setting up Anthony Watson for the

:09:04. > :09:08.try he converted. Farrell might have turned the game, but he couldn't add

:09:09. > :09:12.any polish to an poor performance. Nick Parrott, BBC News.

:09:13. > :09:15.It's the Investec Derby at Epsom this afternoon, and horse racing's

:09:16. > :09:18.premier flat race features two of the unbeaten Frankel's children -

:09:19. > :09:23.However, despite his formidable lineage,

:09:24. > :09:30.Our reporter Tim Hague has been to Newmarket to find out more.

:09:31. > :09:38.Meet Eminent, the horse no one wanted. While other Frankel

:09:39. > :09:42.offspring sold for millions, this one, known as Frank, didn't sell at

:09:43. > :09:46.all, eventually being bought in a private deal for just over ?150,000.

:09:47. > :09:50.The feeling must have been he would take an awful long time to come to

:09:51. > :09:54.himself. We really were taking a chance. I love his presence. I could

:09:55. > :09:58.show you what that haven't turned out that well, so you need one

:09:59. > :10:04.eventually. Their faith has been rewarded with victory in Eminent's

:10:05. > :10:10.first two races, including a record winning time in February. The

:10:11. > :10:14.Frankel cult is running towards the line. Eminent strides away to win

:10:15. > :10:19.the Craven. While there was no victory in the 2000 Guineas, his

:10:20. > :10:24.pedigree is obvious. Frankel could be hot, but he seems to have a good

:10:25. > :10:29.temperament on him. Does he remind you of Frankel? He has huge drive,

:10:30. > :10:33.he covers the ground. He's a big horse, Frankel was because as well.

:10:34. > :10:36.He's very athletic as well. You just have to look at him racing to see

:10:37. > :10:43.his stride and that's something to marvel at. In itself that's no good

:10:44. > :10:47.if he's a nutcase but he's a horse or conducts himself well. He learns

:10:48. > :10:53.and wants to please you. Ironic that a view yard yard from twoball's

:10:54. > :10:59.stable is the area where his father Frankel used to train. While a

:11:00. > :11:06.fantastic Frankel won all 14 of his races, he never went back the Derby.

:11:07. > :11:09.However his son is aiming to do it. He can do the distance quite well

:11:10. > :11:12.and hopefully he can do it. He's bred in the right way to be a Derby

:11:13. > :11:15.winner. He looks the part and I see no earthly reason why he doesn't

:11:16. > :11:21.have a really good chance on Saturday. And if he wins at Epsom,

:11:22. > :11:24.the horse no one wanted would become the horse everyone wants.

:11:25. > :11:27.Andy Murray is on court battling against Juan Martin del Porto

:11:28. > :11:34.in the third round of the French Open.

:11:35. > :11:40.The world War I survived two set points in the first set, it is now a

:11:41. > :11:44.tie-break for the first set and its 5-4 to Andy Murray. That's all the

:11:45. > :11:47.sport for now. You can see more on all of today's

:11:48. > :11:50.stories on the BBC News Channel. The next news on BBC One

:11:51. > :11:54.is at 5:30pm - bye for now.
