:00:20. > :00:22.and say they'll do everything they can to identify the victims.

:00:23. > :00:25.You have the absolute commitment of myself,

:00:26. > :00:30.the Metropolitan Police and other agencies involved that as soon

:00:31. > :00:34.as we can, we will recover those that have died in Grenfell Tower.

:00:35. > :00:40.Relatives and volunteers meet with Theresa May at Downing Street

:00:41. > :00:42.as she admits the Government's response in the hours

:00:43. > :00:45.after the disaster has not been good enough.

:00:46. > :00:49.It was a robust discussion, there was forceful emotion

:00:50. > :00:57.in the room and people were able to say what they wanted to say

:00:58. > :01:00.and we felt that was listened to and listened to carefully.

:01:01. > :01:02.The Queen observes a minute's silence at Trooping The Colour and

:01:03. > :01:18.And, in other news, Bill Cosby walks free from court after a jury

:01:37. > :01:42.Police have warned the death toll is likely to rise.

:01:43. > :01:46.The BBC understands the number of dead or missing could be around 70.

:01:47. > :01:49.Today, following a meeting with some of those affected,

:01:50. > :01:51.Theresa May admitted the Government response in the initial aftermath

:01:52. > :02:04.In the Midsummer heat, Grenfell Tower casts a long shadow.

:02:05. > :02:06.A new, dark reality on the London skyline

:02:07. > :02:12.A site which stops you in your tracks.

:02:13. > :02:18.It is hard to know what to say, yeah.

:02:19. > :02:25.We just said that everyone is busy talking

:02:26. > :02:33.Four days on from disaster and with every

:02:34. > :02:53.Sadly, at this time, there are 58 people who, we have

:02:54. > :02:56.been told were in Grenfell Tower on the night that are missing and

:02:57. > :02:59.therefore, sadly, I have to assume that they are dead.

:03:00. > :03:01.The investigations into how this happened will be complex and lengthy

:03:02. > :03:05.but the residents association for Grenfell Tower and the surrounding

:03:06. > :03:09.blocks is already calling for the council

:03:10. > :03:11.and its management agency to be suspended from their

:03:23. > :03:33.These are fundamental questions and we are days after this disaster.

:03:34. > :03:38.Today, the residents brought those frustrations to

:03:39. > :03:43.It was a robust discussion, there was forceful

:03:44. > :03:49.emotion in the room and people were able

:03:50. > :03:53.to say what they wanted to say and we felt that was listened

:03:54. > :04:06.In a statement, the Prime Minister said.

:04:07. > :04:09.An analysis which chimes with the volunteers who have been

:04:10. > :04:12.working flat out to help victims in the absence of effective

:04:13. > :04:23.They have been completely let down and it is the same people

:04:24. > :04:25.that potentially might have caused this matter not

:04:26. > :04:31.It is tragic and if it wasn't for the community here at the

:04:32. > :04:33.volunteers, I would dread to think what would have

:04:34. > :04:36.The Prime Minister says she accepts that there are huge

:04:37. > :04:39.frustrations here and she is promising to send more support into

:04:40. > :04:42.It is the sort of help which is desperately needed, but

:04:43. > :04:46.this community could have used it days ago.

:04:47. > :04:51.Were you reassured by what Theresa May

:04:52. > :05:00.With so much pain and frustration here, there are

:05:01. > :05:03.warnings that government help must work with the community to avoid

:05:04. > :05:07.And high in Grenfell Tower, the operation

:05:08. > :05:16.A reminder of what has been lost and the scale of the task ahead.

:05:17. > :05:19.Jeremy Cooke, BBC News, North Kensington.

:05:20. > :05:20.Our political correspondent Alex Forsyth is in

:05:21. > :05:32.Of course that meeting there with those affected by the fire, I guess

:05:33. > :05:35.in some part to try to soften some of the anger we have seen in the

:05:36. > :05:39.past few days. What's your assessment of the day's events? The

:05:40. > :05:44.statement that Theresa May issued after that meeting was clearly an

:05:45. > :05:47.attempt to countersome of the claims her Government's response has lacked

:05:48. > :05:50.sympathy and understanding. It was a long statement. In which the Prime

:05:51. > :05:54.Minister said she had heard the concerns of residents. Their

:05:55. > :05:57.frustration and their fear their voices hadn't been listened to and

:05:58. > :06:01.questions were going unanswered. She announced a series of measures,

:06:02. > :06:05.money immediate for things like food and clothes, a promise to rehouse

:06:06. > :06:09.people, extra personnel and support on the ground to offer advice. And

:06:10. > :06:14.the response from some in the community is, so far, cautiously

:06:15. > :06:17.optimistic. But Theresa May has been under significant pressure, not just

:06:18. > :06:20.in terms of her handling of what happened at Grenfell Tower, but also

:06:21. > :06:23.because of the result of the election which left her position

:06:24. > :06:29.weakened. This was clearly an attempt to try to put her Government

:06:30. > :06:32.back on the front foot, to show that she understands, that she's offering

:06:33. > :06:36.support and providing action too. This was her trying to cement her

:06:37. > :06:39.authority. The question remains whether it will be enough?

:06:40. > :06:41.Particularly for those in the community which has lost so much.

:06:42. > :06:49.Thank you. Amid that anger that not enough's

:06:50. > :06:51.been done to help those affected by the disaster,

:06:52. > :06:53.some people are still trying to find answers

:06:54. > :06:55.about what happened to relatives, This is a tragedy that has

:06:56. > :07:01.shaken faith, in safety, It has brought a tight

:07:02. > :07:12.community even closer, waiting still for any news

:07:13. > :07:17.of the missing. Dozens from Grenfell Tower are lost,

:07:18. > :07:20.faces from the floors that The anger and demands

:07:21. > :07:24.for accountability are growing. It's always the public

:07:25. > :07:28.that runs to rescue. Where's the authorities?

:07:29. > :07:32.Where are they? Forgotten corners of this area have

:07:33. > :07:35.become shrines to Grenfell, As the days since the tragedy wear

:07:36. > :07:42.on, the hope of friends The only comfort now would be

:07:43. > :07:48.answers as to what happened. Instead, there is the

:07:49. > :07:51.pain of not knowing. Though as time passes,

:07:52. > :07:55.more are presumed dead. Still missing, 57-year-old Hesham

:07:56. > :07:58.Rahman, originally from Egypt. His mother and nephew

:07:59. > :08:03.fear the worst. Hesham called her shortly

:08:04. > :08:05.after 3.00am as the fire The last thing he said

:08:06. > :08:11.to my grandmother was, I had spoken to the police,

:08:12. > :08:15.told them that the smoke was coming into my house and they told me

:08:16. > :08:17.that they were coming, close your door, put some wet

:08:18. > :08:20.towels on the floor. We're coming to get you,

:08:21. > :08:23.it's going to be all right. So, he then said to my grandmother,

:08:24. > :08:26.once I'm out I'll let How are you bearing

:08:27. > :08:29.up at the moment? We all want the same answers,

:08:30. > :08:34.we're all frustrated but we really We all want to achieve the same

:08:35. > :08:42.thing but not with aggression. A mother who watched her son's

:08:43. > :08:56.nearby home turn to horror. One story among so many

:08:57. > :08:59.from the hell of Grenfell Tower. Mark Lowen, BBC News,

:09:00. > :09:07.North Kensington. The Queen observed a minute's

:09:08. > :09:11.silence at the Trooping of the Colour parade today in memory

:09:12. > :09:14.of all those who died in Grenfell Tower and in the recent

:09:15. > :09:16.attacks Manchester and London. Earlier, she issued an unprecedented

:09:17. > :09:19.statement on what is her official birthday in which she said

:09:20. > :09:23.it was difficult to escape the very Our Royal correspondent

:09:24. > :09:29.Nicolas Witchall reports. On a day intended for celebration,

:09:30. > :09:34.the Queen led the nation in sorrow. Before leaving Buckingham Palace

:09:35. > :09:36.for Horse Guards, she stood with the Duke of Edinburgh

:09:37. > :09:41.for a minute's silence. A moment of reflection,

:09:42. > :09:47.joined by the Foot Guards on the parade ground and the Cavalry

:09:48. > :09:50.at the Palace gates in remembrance of those lost at Grenfell Tower

:09:51. > :09:52.and in the terrorist attacks In a statement issued at 6.00am this

:09:53. > :10:05.morning the Queen said. Yesterday she had visited the scene

:10:06. > :10:09.of the fire at Grenfell Tower and met some of those who have lost

:10:10. > :10:12.friends and neighbours. It had clearly made

:10:13. > :10:13.a deep impression. The Foot Guards marched and trooped

:10:14. > :10:45.the Colour of the Irish Guards. And the Royal Family appeared

:10:46. > :10:48.on the Palace balcony where Prince George,

:10:49. > :10:52.as usual, stole the show gazing down at the crowds and as then as the RAF

:10:53. > :10:55.fly-past appeared up at the sky This was a year when the head

:10:56. > :11:03.of state reflected the country's Nicolas Witchall, BBC

:11:04. > :11:07.News, Buckingham Palace. Since the fire, the Government

:11:08. > :11:10.has ordered councils across England to check the safety

:11:11. > :11:13.of their buildings. Many have sought to reassure tenants

:11:14. > :11:15.living in tower blocks. But, as our correspondent

:11:16. > :11:17.Duncan Kennedy reports, it's not just tower blocks that

:11:18. > :11:32.are coming under scrutiny. In all parts of the country, in all

:11:33. > :11:37.kinds of buildings, the Grenfell fire is changing people's lives. How

:11:38. > :11:43.long have you lived here? Nearly 40 years. Like Mo who has lived on the

:11:44. > :11:48.20th floor of her tower block in Southampton since 1977. Without a

:11:49. > :11:52.worry, until this week. The block is due to be cladded. But after

:11:53. > :11:57.cladding came under suspicion in the west London fire, skachlt mo has

:11:58. > :12:01.called the council to an immediate meeting to express residents'

:12:02. > :12:04.doubts. Because the flats are a lot of flats are very damp and the heat

:12:05. > :12:08.something not a very good system and it's quite cold, we were all pushing

:12:09. > :12:15.for our cladding to be done. And now? To make it warmer. And now, I

:12:16. > :12:20.want reassurances before I will go as rep to the come to say we will

:12:21. > :12:24.have it done. Seven years ago, this tower block fire in Southampton

:12:25. > :12:30.killed two firefighters. There was no connection with cladding, but it

:12:31. > :12:34.did bring changes. The blaze here led to a complete rethink about

:12:35. > :12:38.safety. And sprinklers were added not only here but to buildings

:12:39. > :12:42.across the city. Now in the wake of the Grenfell fire, the Government

:12:43. > :12:48.has ordered councils to look at all their buildings and not just the

:12:49. > :12:51.tower blocks. And not just old buildings either. This student

:12:52. > :12:56.accommodation in Nottingham was built only three years ago and came

:12:57. > :13:01.with cladding designed into it. But it will also be examined by experts

:13:02. > :13:04.just to make sure it is fire resistant. It's something they

:13:05. > :13:08.should look at but it shouldn't worry residents at all. We have fire

:13:09. > :13:13.alarms tests every week and had another one today. So we keep

:13:14. > :13:17.checking it. Wherever you go, public sector buildings are being checked.

:13:18. > :13:23.Here at Hull's Royal Infirmary NHS officials have been trying to

:13:24. > :13:27.reassure local people. Saying that cladding on the building is safe.

:13:28. > :13:32.From Cornwall to Lincolnshire, meetings are being held and nerves

:13:33. > :13:36.steadied. Tower blocks and other buildings once only talked about in

:13:37. > :13:40.terms of their aesthetics and quality, are now places for

:13:41. > :13:42.discussions about safety and protection. Duncan Kennedy, BBC

:13:43. > :13:47.News, Southampton. An investigation has begun into how

:13:48. > :13:49.a US Navy Destroyer, one of the most sophisticated

:13:50. > :13:53.warships in the world, was involved in a collision with

:13:54. > :13:56.a vast container ship off Japan. Seven crew members are still missing

:13:57. > :13:58.after the USS Fitzgerald, which has now arrived back at port,

:13:59. > :14:02.was hit by the Philippine vessel The ship's commanding

:14:03. > :14:05.officer has been taken The husband of Jo Cox -

:14:06. > :14:10.the MP who was murdered last year - has said his wife would be

:14:11. > :14:12.incredibly humbled by events held Brendan Cox, who helped organise

:14:13. > :14:17."The Great Get Together", said it showed the country

:14:18. > :14:19.was crying out for a sense The entertainer Bill Cosby has

:14:20. > :14:27.walked free from a court in the United States after a judge

:14:28. > :14:30.declared a mistrial in his The jury were unable

:14:31. > :14:33.to reach a decision on whether the 79-year-old

:14:34. > :14:42.was guilty of drugging and sexually assaulting

:14:43. > :14:44.a woman 13 years ago. After so many accused him of being

:14:45. > :14:50.a calculated sexual predator, Bill Cosby is free now to go

:14:51. > :14:52.home from court. The jury didn't acquit him,

:14:53. > :14:54.but they could not unanimously We came here looking

:14:55. > :14:58.for an acquittal, but like that Rolling Stones song says,

:14:59. > :15:01.you don't always get what you want - God bless you all,

:15:02. > :15:05.and happy Father's Day. The mistrial was celebrated like

:15:06. > :15:11.a victory by Cosby's supporters. What do you say to those

:15:12. > :15:19.people who say, well, 60 women came forward

:15:20. > :15:22.and accused him of assault. Back in his heyday,

:15:23. > :15:30.Bill Cosby was the most prominent African-American,

:15:31. > :15:31.the highest-paid actor, But dozens of women came

:15:32. > :15:40.forward saying he drugged Most cases couldn't go

:15:41. > :15:45.to trial it was so long One case was heard in court, though,

:15:46. > :15:53.brought by Andrea Constand, a former university employee

:15:54. > :15:55.who claims that in 2004 Bill Cosby didn't take

:15:56. > :16:03.the stand during his trial. Instead, his defence

:16:04. > :16:06.team tried to undermine Women's rights lawyers have

:16:07. > :16:11.been appalled but say If the court allows more accusers

:16:12. > :16:16.to testify next time, In other words, it's too early

:16:17. > :16:26.to celebrate, Mr Cosby. Round two may be just

:16:27. > :16:30.around the corner. For now, Bill Cosby walks free,

:16:31. > :16:35.but there is the prospect that he is going to be retried,

:16:36. > :16:39.and there is no question that in spite of this result,

:16:40. > :16:41.his reputation as something of an American father figure

:16:42. > :16:52.has now been tarnished. You can see more on all of today's

:16:53. > :16:56.stories on the BBC News Channel. That's all from me

:16:57. > :16:58.and the team here.
