:00:20. > :00:26.The Government says it is drafting in a team of civil servants to help

:00:27. > :00:35.improve the official response to the Grenfell Tower fire,

:00:36. > :00:38.amid mounting anger over the lack of help being provided to victims.

:00:39. > :00:41.Many residents have said they've received little or no

:00:42. > :00:42.assistance from Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council,

:00:43. > :00:44.although the authority has insisted it's committed

:00:45. > :00:47.Church services are being held today to remember

:00:48. > :00:52.the victims of the blaze, as Simon Jones reports.

:00:53. > :01:00.After the shock and the grief, today, a moment of reflection,

:01:01. > :01:05.church services to mark the lives lost and the many missing, presumed

:01:06. > :01:09.dead. That anger remains palpable. The difficulty is people are now

:01:10. > :01:13.finding out who has died and that will be enormous grief as well as

:01:14. > :01:19.enormous anger. I think you will see a whole different kind of atmosphere

:01:20. > :01:22.because people... The deaths are now real. Many churches opened their

:01:23. > :01:28.doors in the hours after the tragedy, offering shelter and

:01:29. > :01:33.collecting donations, but people are asking, why did they need to step

:01:34. > :01:37.in, where was the Government, the local council? Why didn't they do

:01:38. > :01:41.more? One conservative councillor from Kensington and Chelsea admits

:01:42. > :01:46.things have gone badly wrong. From what I can see, we have been caught

:01:47. > :01:55.off-guard. Underground, people were quick to organise themselves. It has

:01:56. > :01:59.been kind of a disgraceful slow, limp, if I can put it like that. The

:02:00. > :02:03.Prime Minister accepts that in the hours after the disaster, the

:02:04. > :02:06.support for families was not good enough. Now extra government staff

:02:07. > :02:09.are being drafted in to work with the council. It follows a meeting

:02:10. > :02:14.between the local people and the reason may in which they were keen

:02:15. > :02:19.to have their voices heard. Things are finally moving forward and the

:02:20. > :02:23.Government and the council are being proactive. I think sadly it took a

:02:24. > :02:30.long time to get them up and running and if it wasn't for other centres,

:02:31. > :02:36.none of this would have been done. We are lucky we have so many bright,

:02:37. > :02:39.important, smart people in the area. The Home Office is making

:02:40. > :02:43.arrangements for the family of one of those who died to travel from

:02:44. > :02:48.Syria to the UK for the funeral. He was killed when he was separated

:02:49. > :02:53.from his brother. His life, one of many remembered today. I think there

:02:54. > :02:59.will be a special sense of grieving, sadness, in the churches today, as

:03:00. > :03:03.people remember what has happened and people are still homeless as

:03:04. > :03:07.well, but I think also there will be a note of hope. The painstaking

:03:08. > :03:12.investigation is continuing but the warning from police is there will be

:03:13. > :03:18.no quick answers. We can join Simon in West London now. How is the

:03:19. > :03:23.increased government support showing itself to people on the ground? The

:03:24. > :03:26.church service here has just finished and people have been taking

:03:27. > :03:31.a moment to look at the flowers, bring more, look at the posters of

:03:32. > :03:34.the faces of people missing who are sadly now presumed dead. The

:03:35. > :03:39.Government says extra staff are coming in and some will be wearing

:03:40. > :03:43.high visibility clothing to be easily identified by people who need

:03:44. > :03:47.them. A lot of residents say they have seen no sign of them at all so

:03:48. > :03:57.far today. We have asked the Government where they are but they

:03:58. > :03:59.have not given us an answer. This is a community that needs trust

:04:00. > :04:02.rebuilding with the Government. The tributes are here, but just over

:04:03. > :04:05.there, you can see the police operation is continuing, along with

:04:06. > :04:10.the Fire Service, and what remains of the tower block, still a shocking

:04:11. > :04:14.sight. The warning is this investigation is not going to be

:04:15. > :04:15.quick and it is likely going to be painful. Simon Jones there, thank

:04:16. > :04:18.you. The Chancellor, Philip Hammond,

:04:19. > :04:21.says Brexit negotiations that end with no deal would be an extremely

:04:22. > :04:23.bad outcome for Britain. It comes as formal talks with the EU

:04:24. > :04:26.are set to get under way Labour say the Government's approach

:04:27. > :04:31.so far has left the UK in the worst Our political correspondent,

:04:32. > :04:35.Susana Mendonca, is in Wesminster. Philip Hammond is taking a slightly

:04:36. > :04:49.different position Yes, we have heard Theresa May say

:04:50. > :04:53.so many times have no deal would be better than a bad deal. Here we have

:04:54. > :04:58.Philip Hammond, the Chancellor saying no deal would be a very, very

:04:59. > :05:02.bad outcome for Britain and he talks about how he wants a transitional

:05:03. > :05:05.structure which means we have a slope rather than the cliff edge

:05:06. > :05:09.people have spoken about. This is contrary to what other members of

:05:10. > :05:13.the Cabinet think. Philip Hammond has been critical also of the

:05:14. > :05:17.Government's approach and the Conservatives' campaign in the

:05:18. > :05:19.general election and his role which he felt was not as it should have

:05:20. > :05:22.been. It's true that my role

:05:23. > :05:24.in the election campaign was not I did a lot of travelling

:05:25. > :05:29.around the country... I met lots of very interesting

:05:30. > :05:33.people and I heard lots Look, I would have liked

:05:34. > :05:36.to have made much more of our economic record,

:05:37. > :05:39.which I think is an excellent one, creating 2.9 million new jobs,

:05:40. > :05:51.getting the deficit down There you have for it, the

:05:52. > :05:53.Chancellor who was not have happy at being sidelines, talking about how

:05:54. > :06:01.the Conservatives should have focused on the positive economic

:06:02. > :06:05.message. We have got Brexit negotiations coming up, tomorrow,

:06:06. > :06:09.and Labour have said Theresa May has effectively put the country into a

:06:10. > :06:14.very difficult position, put the starting point back in terms of the

:06:15. > :06:15.negotiations. All eyes will be on what happens between the EU and

:06:16. > :06:19.Britain of course. Thank you. A murder investigation is under way

:06:20. > :06:21.after an 18-year-old woman's body was found in a country

:06:22. > :06:23.park in Wigan. She's been named by police

:06:24. > :06:25.as Ellen Higginbottom. The discovery was made

:06:26. > :06:27.in Orrell Water Park yesterday, after Ellen had been reported

:06:28. > :06:32.missing by family members on Friday. Police say she had suffered a brutal

:06:33. > :06:35.attack and are appealing for anyone with information

:06:36. > :06:38.to come forward. France is voting in the second

:06:39. > :06:41.and final round of the country's President Emmanuel Macron's party,

:06:42. > :06:48.La Republique en Marche, which was formed just over a year

:06:49. > :06:52.ago, is predicted to win up to three-quarters of the seats

:06:53. > :07:04.in the national assembly. The bodies of a number of sailors

:07:05. > :07:07.missing after a US naval destroyer collided with a container vessel

:07:08. > :07:10.have been found. An investigation is under way to establish how the

:07:11. > :07:11.collision occurred with the Philippine vessel in the middle of

:07:12. > :07:14.the night. A forest fire in central

:07:15. > :07:16.Portugal is believed The blaze is spreading though

:07:17. > :07:19.the centre of the country Nearly 600 firefighters and 160

:07:20. > :07:25.vehicles have been dispatched Many of those who died

:07:26. > :07:29.were trapped in their cars. Our correspondent,

:07:30. > :07:41.Alison Roberts, reports. People flee as the flames moving.

:07:42. > :07:44.The fires that have swept across this mountainous part of Portugal

:07:45. > :07:51.have devastated everything in their way. Dozens of fire started

:07:52. > :07:53.yesterday amid hot, dry conditions, but it is this fire here that has

:07:54. > :07:58.claimed so many lives. TRANSLATION: We were inside the

:07:59. > :08:01.house, the fire was all around us. The firefighters came to get us

:08:02. > :08:03.out because we could As for whether the house

:08:04. > :08:13.burned or not, it must 700 firefighters battling this

:08:14. > :08:23.blaze, hundreds more fighting elsewhere. At least 30 of the deaths

:08:24. > :08:25.came as people tried to flee in their cars.

:08:26. > :08:28.Other deaths and injuries occurred along or near the highway in this

:08:29. > :08:31.Officials were visibly shaken by the deaths.

:08:32. > :08:33.Portugal's Prime Minister said it was the worst ever such tragedy

:08:34. > :08:43.The victim is all died in the same fire at the same place. The criminal

:08:44. > :08:49.investigation department and the forensic teams are at work to try to

:08:50. > :08:50.identify the victims. Several firefighters are among those

:08:51. > :08:55.seriously injured or missing. France and Spain sent aircraft

:08:56. > :08:57.to back up Portugal's own efforts, but with temperatures expected

:08:58. > :08:59.to remain high, firefighters face You can see more on all of today's

:09:00. > :09:08.stories on the BBC News Channel. The next news on BBC

:09:09. > :09:29.One is at 6.30pm. Good afternoon. The hot weather that

:09:30. > :09:32.has developed across many areas this weekend is going to be pretty tricky

:09:33. > :09:34.to budge through the week ahead.
