:00:22. > :00:26.Some of the BBC's best known female personalities have written an open

:00:27. > :00:28.letter to the corporation's director-general, calling on him

:00:29. > :00:31.to take urgent action to ensure women are paid the same as men doing

:00:32. > :00:36.The presenters Claire Balding, Fiona Bruce and Jane Garvey

:00:37. > :00:44.The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the pay gap was appalling,

:00:45. > :00:47.and called for a pay audit of every organisation.

:00:48. > :00:53.Our media correspondent David Sillito reports.

:00:54. > :00:57.Alex Jones of the One Show, Michelle Hussain, Sue Barker.

:00:58. > :01:00.Three of more than 40 famous names calling on the BBC to act now

:01:01. > :01:06.This open letter to the papers says that this week's annual

:01:07. > :01:12.report confirmed what many have long suspected.

:01:13. > :01:15.That women were being paid less than men for the same work.

:01:16. > :01:18.On the whole, I think it's fantastic that so many wonderful women have

:01:19. > :01:24.been prepared to stick their head above the parapet.

:01:25. > :01:27.We've got stick, we knew we were going to get stick,

:01:28. > :01:30.that's why it was never going to be an easy thing to do.

:01:31. > :01:34.In fact, it's not about getting whacking great pay rises for women

:01:35. > :01:38.It's about pay parity and getting fairness for everybody.

:01:39. > :01:40.On the list revealed this week, the 20 highest-paid male stars

:01:41. > :01:45.The top 20 women, less than half that.

:01:46. > :01:47.This, they say, isn't a call for more pay -

:01:48. > :02:02.Absolutely set in stone if you are doing the same job

:02:03. > :02:06.as a man, exactly the same job, you have to be on the same rate.

:02:07. > :02:11.And the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says the corporation

:02:12. > :02:13.needs to look at itself, but added this went much

:02:14. > :02:23.We would insist on a strong gender pay audit of every organisation,

:02:24. > :02:27.and we'd also look at the 20:1 ratio between the chief executive

:02:28. > :02:33.and the lowest paid staff in every public sector organisation.

:02:34. > :02:36.In response, the BBC says its overall pay gap is 10%,

:02:37. > :02:39.less than the national average of 18%, and it's working

:02:40. > :02:47.But today's signatories want that to happen sooner rather than later.

:02:48. > :02:57.Our political correspondent Leila Nathoo is here.

:02:58. > :03:04.Leila, as we heard from Jeremy Corbyn, this is part of a wider

:03:05. > :03:09.political debate about pay? I think it is. As of April this year the

:03:10. > :03:14.Government has forced employers with more than 250 staff to publish

:03:15. > :03:18.information on their gender pay gap, taking into account bonuses too and

:03:19. > :03:24.also information on the proportion of men and women at different levels

:03:25. > :03:27.of the pay structure. The equalities Minister Justine Greening spoke this

:03:28. > :03:32.morning and said these regulations mandating transparency on the issue

:03:33. > :03:35.are designed to demonstrate to organisations that it is a matter of

:03:36. > :03:40.reputation to encourage them to change. She said it was very hard to

:03:41. > :03:44.justify some of the big pay differentials seen at the BBC, but

:03:45. > :03:48.as with Jeremy Corbyn's call for a gender pay gap ordered to be

:03:49. > :03:51.extended to all organisations regardless of size as well as an

:03:52. > :03:59.idea of pay ratios between the highest and lowest paid members of

:04:00. > :04:02.staff in the public sector organisations, I think it is clear

:04:03. > :04:03.the issue extends beyond those at the top of the BBC and also reaches

:04:04. > :04:05.further than the BBC. Thank you. A 20-year-old man has died in east

:04:06. > :04:07.London after being apprehended CCTV footage has emerged

:04:08. > :04:11.of the officer wrestling the man to the floor of the shop in Hackney

:04:12. > :04:28.early yesterday morning. What more can you tell us about this

:04:29. > :04:32.incident? This video has been shared widely on social media and has

:04:33. > :04:35.provoked a lot of anger among some people, especially in the black

:04:36. > :04:39.community. One man said to me today that no white kid would ever have

:04:40. > :04:45.been treated like this. You can see the young man running into the shop

:04:46. > :04:50.behind me, filmed on security camera, pursued by a uniformed

:04:51. > :04:56.police officer. There is a struggle, eventually the young man falls to

:04:57. > :05:02.the floor. At some stage you can see something being put in his mouth,

:05:03. > :05:07.eventually he is restrained with handcuffs. It appears two officers

:05:08. > :05:12.are involved. The Independent Police Complaints Commission to go over

:05:13. > :05:16.this inquiry very soon, they say there is evidence that something was

:05:17. > :05:19.found in Amman 's throat at the scene. The borough commander in

:05:20. > :05:24.Hackney today said no police officer was exempt from the law and would

:05:25. > :05:27.not wish to be, he said there would be lots of speculation in the next

:05:28. > :05:33.few days about about how the young man died. He has been named locally

:05:34. > :05:36.as Rashan Jermaine Charles. Princes William and Harry have

:05:37. > :05:38.spoken about Princess Diana In a documentary marking the 20th

:05:39. > :05:42.anniversary of her death, they describe her sense of fun

:05:43. > :05:44.but also their regret at their last conversation

:05:45. > :05:47.with her being a rushed phone call. Our royal correspondent,

:05:48. > :05:48.Nicholas Witchell's report contains To the watching world,

:05:49. > :05:55.she was the princess whose image It was a glamorous

:05:56. > :05:59.but necessarily limited Now nearly 20 years after Diana's

:06:00. > :06:07.death in the car accident in Paris, her sons William and Harry have

:06:08. > :06:09.spoken in an ITV documentary about Diana, the mother who did

:06:10. > :06:15.so much to shape their childhood. We felt, you know, incredibly

:06:16. > :06:18.loved, Harry and I. And I'm very grateful that that

:06:19. > :06:25.love still feels there. It was that love that

:06:26. > :06:28.even if she was on the other side of the room, as a son

:06:29. > :06:35.you could feel it. The person who emerges from William

:06:36. > :06:38.and Harry's description is a woman When everybody says to me,

:06:39. > :06:42.you know, "So, she was fun, All I can hear is her

:06:43. > :06:49.laugh in my head. And that sort of crazy laugh

:06:50. > :06:52.where there was just pure One of her mottos to me was that

:06:53. > :07:05.you can be as naughty as you want, And they talk about

:07:06. > :07:10.their mother's death. They recall the last time they spoke

:07:11. > :07:13.to her and they reflect on the overwhelming public reaction

:07:14. > :07:18.and how they coped with the week As William himself has said,

:07:19. > :07:22.it is a tribute to Diana from her sons in which they recall

:07:23. > :07:40.the woman they hope The head of the powerful trade body

:07:41. > :07:45.representing all German car manufacturers has told the BBC that

:07:46. > :07:49.a long transitional deal after Brexit is needed otherwise there

:07:50. > :07:54.would be a threat to jobs and investment in Britain.

:07:55. > :07:59.The president of the German Automotive Industry Association has

:08:00. > :08:04.accused Britain of abandoning pragmatism for ideology -- ideology

:08:05. > :08:07.of the issue. International Trade secretary Liam Fox has said that a

:08:08. > :08:10.transitional agreement could last up until 2022.

:08:11. > :08:13.Cycling and Chris Froome is expected to win his fourth Tour de

:08:14. > :08:17.He remains the overall leader going into the final stage in Paris

:08:18. > :08:18.and won't be challenged by other riders.

:08:19. > :08:25.Our sports correspondent Richard Conway is in Paris

:08:26. > :08:34.Richard, when can we expect to see Chris Froome on the winner 's

:08:35. > :08:39.podium? It will be about five hours from now. I am at the Champs-Elysees

:08:40. > :08:43.in the centre of Paris, crowds are building, there is a party

:08:44. > :08:48.atmosphere in the city because they ready to welcome back the riders

:08:49. > :08:51.after an epic and fiercely contested race, Chris Froome prevailing over

:08:52. > :08:57.his rivals but it took the decisive time trial in Marseille yesterday,

:08:58. > :09:02.14 miles of that course, an emphatic display of his time trailing

:09:03. > :09:07.ability. Rigoberta to a run of Colombia and Romain Bardet of France

:09:08. > :09:12.are his main rivals. It is Chris Froome who will stand victorious at

:09:13. > :09:17.the end of the race. He will do a collapse of the Champs-Elysees and

:09:18. > :09:19.Chris Froome will stand on the podium to be crowned as Tour de

:09:20. > :09:22.France winner for the fourth time. Thanks, Richard.

:09:23. > :09:27.You can see more on all of today's stories on the BBC News Channel.

:09:28. > :09:29.The next news on BBC One is at 6:30pm.

:09:30. > :09:50.The weekend for some of us has been a bit of a wash-out. Far from ideal.

:09:51. > :09:54.Today not ideal. There is some fine weather around, here is Shropshire,

:09:55. > :09:58.some fair weather cloud. I will show you where that is in relation to the

:09:59. > :10:01.weather we're having, there is a lump of rain crossing central and

:10:02. > :10:06.southern England now, that is where the picture was taken. Heavy rain in

:10:07. > :10:20.cool weather across the north-east of England and eastern Scotland.

:10:21. > :10:26.This is Fifa, not a pretty picture. For the moment, the areas I picked

:10:27. > :10:29.out in the south and the damp and cool weather in the north-east of

:10:30. > :10:33.Scotland and North East of England. The best of the weather will

:10:34. > :10:37.probably be across western coastal areas, Cornwall, Devon West Wales,

:10:38. > :10:42.but across the Midlands you are at risk of catching some downpours and

:10:43. > :10:48.maybe thunder and lightning. A nice day in Northern Ireland, 21 Celsius.

:10:49. > :10:51.Here is the rain across the Lake District, Sunderland and Newcastle.

:10:52. > :10:56.Northern and western Scotland are doing fine, temperatures in the high

:10:57. > :11:01.teens with sunshine. The rain pivot southwards here and eastwards, it

:11:02. > :11:05.will be quite cloudy with damp weather from Hull into the Midlands

:11:06. > :11:09.and the south-east. Western areas, through the course of the night,

:11:10. > :11:14.will clear up a bit so there will be spells of rain. The good weather

:11:15. > :11:18.across the Atlantic is here, high-pressure, trying to build in

:11:19. > :11:26.but we are still close to the low, on the backside of the lower on

:11:27. > :11:32.Monday tomorrow. Winds from the not pleasant on the North Sea coast. An

:11:33. > :11:35.east/ west split tomorrow, the line is probably around Birmingham.

:11:36. > :11:40.Everywhere to the east of that will be cool, the yellow covers here.

:11:41. > :11:46.West of that looking fine, a great day in Glasgow, everybody flocked to

:11:47. > :11:49.Glasgow, 24 or 5 degrees, a stunning day with sunshine.

:11:50. > :11:54.Into Monday, the high-pressure tries to build in but it does not want to

:11:55. > :11:58.know about it! The areas of low pressure and weather front started

:11:59. > :12:04.lining up, but before they do, Tuesday will be a decent day. The

:12:05. > :12:08.best day of the week overall across the UK, temperatures widely into the

:12:09. > :12:13.20s. The high-pressure moves far away out of the picture and instead

:12:14. > :12:19.it is hello lo, with weather fronts and outbreaks of rain. This is the

:12:20. > :12:23.forecast for Wednesday. It is almost like a wall of water heading our

:12:24. > :12:31.way. It will be quite heavy at times, the rainfall, cool and breezy

:12:32. > :12:35.so a bit soggy. Wednesday evening into Thursday, the weather fronts

:12:36. > :12:42.moves out into the North Sea, behind it we get a rush of fresh Atlantic

:12:43. > :12:47.air. A decent day on Thursday but a breezy with a bit of rain across

:12:48. > :12:52.some northern parts of Scotland. On Friday we are in the window of

:12:53. > :12:57.decent weather, but the next weather system starts to come in. It will be

:12:58. > :13:04.a pretty changeable week ahead, that is for sure. The wettest day will be

:13:05. > :13:05.Wednesday, and it will be cool. If
