:01:31. > :01:45.More than a thousand people have been rescued from flooding in one

:01:46. > :01:47.of America's most populous cities, Houston, in Texas, as a huge

:01:48. > :01:49.storm continues to batter parts of the state.

:01:50. > :01:51.Forecasters there say the conditions are "unprecedented," and warn

:01:52. > :01:56.24 inches of rain fell in one day, and emergency workers

:01:57. > :01:58.are still trying to reach hundreds of people stranded in their homes.

:01:59. > :02:01.Our North America Correspondent James Cook is in Houston

:02:02. > :02:12.The White House has just announced that the President, Donald Trump,

:02:13. > :02:18.will visit Texas on Tuesday. He will find a state struggling to cope with

:02:19. > :02:22.one of the most serious natural disasters in living memory for this

:02:23. > :02:23.country and here in Houston this, floodwater is creeping ever-closer

:02:24. > :02:32.to the heart of the city. Harvey arrived in Houston with

:02:33. > :02:36.avengeance. No longer packing the full force of a hurricane but still

:02:37. > :02:43.deadly. Forecasters say it is on track to dump more than 50 inches of

:02:44. > :02:48.rain in Texas, making it the wettest storm on record here. In the fourth

:02:49. > :02:51.largest city in the United States, the results are devastating. Well

:02:52. > :02:57.this appears to be either the worse or one of the worse floods Houston

:02:58. > :03:01.has ever had. We are measuring not in inches but feet. Hundreds of

:03:02. > :03:04.rescuers have taken to the water, in boats large and small but the

:03:05. > :03:09.flooded city's streets are difficult to navigate. The currents are swift,

:03:10. > :03:13.and treacherous. Treacherous. In these conditions, making the wrong

:03:14. > :03:23.turning can quickly become a matter of life and death. . We prayed a lot

:03:24. > :03:28.and we just praised God and we were rescued, so we're very thankful.

:03:29. > :03:32.Houston has ground to a halt and with the rain still teeming down,

:03:33. > :03:38.the waters keep on rising. Police are urging people not to venture

:03:39. > :03:48.out, not to risk their lives. This is Y Pedro told us he was almostp

:03:49. > :03:54.swept away. I had to find a way to come home. I had to walk all the way

:03:55. > :03:58.there. The rescue boat was ever there but I was helping somebody

:03:59. > :04:01.else. There is rescues happening up there. Yes. The storm has crippled

:04:02. > :04:06.transport and left people struggling to go about their lives. Right now

:04:07. > :04:12.it is hard to believe this is the richest nation on Earth. You get a

:04:13. > :04:14.sense of how quickly this situation is unfolding. The flooding clearly

:04:15. > :04:18.caught these drivers by surprise and still the rains coming down, with no

:04:19. > :04:22.sign of it stopping. The authorities are struggling to cope, they are

:04:23. > :04:29.calling for more boats to be sent in. More than 2,000 people, in need

:04:30. > :04:34.of rescue, have called the emergency services and the mayor is trying to

:04:35. > :04:42.stem a sense of panic. We are coming to you. OK, we want people to know

:04:43. > :04:49.in the city - if you are there, there is a need, we will get to you.

:04:50. > :04:55.I will simply ask that you remain calm, remain a little patient, OK

:04:56. > :04:57.but we will get to you. Tonight, this city and its bedraggled

:04:58. > :05:01.citizens are increasingly isolated. Getting in and out is becoming

:05:02. > :05:05.harder and harder and with night fall approaching and the waters

:05:06. > :05:05.rising, this is a disaster in the making.

:05:06. > :05:09.It is difficult to see how this city could host a presidential visit as

:05:10. > :05:14.early as Tuesday. The authorities here really are struggling to cope

:05:15. > :05:18.with the extent of this unfolding disaster. It seems clear more people

:05:19. > :05:22.are trapped tonight and still are waiting to be rescued. That number

:05:23. > :05:27.is likely to increase because the waters are rising, the problem being

:05:28. > :05:32.that the remnants of the hurricane are stuck, sitting across this state

:05:33. > :05:34.and this rain is likely to continue for days. Thank you for that, James.

:05:35. > :05:34.Some of the eight victims of yesterday's minibus crash on the M1

:05:35. > :05:35.near Newport Pagnell, have been named.

:05:36. > :05:38.They include the driver of the minibus involved

:05:39. > :05:44.Two lorry drivers have been charged with causing death

:05:45. > :05:58.A church service held this morning to remember Cyriac Joseph, the

:05:59. > :06:01.minibus driver lost his life yesterday morning in a crash on the

:06:02. > :06:03.M1, that left six men and two women dead.

:06:04. > :06:07.Today his wife and two children were at church, where

:06:08. > :06:11.He was a family-oriented man, very genuine.

:06:12. > :06:13.Personally he was a good friend of mine as well.

:06:14. > :06:19.This afternoon friends spoke of their memories of

:06:20. > :06:21.him and said their faith will help them support each other.

:06:22. > :06:28.And he was quite friendly with everybody.

:06:29. > :06:31.If anybody needs anything, he is there

:06:32. > :06:36.So he was always there for someone and he was always there for

:06:37. > :06:54.He was driving a minibus from his company, ABC Travel, when

:06:55. > :06:56.the collision happened near Newport Pagnell on Saturday

:06:57. > :07:00.Two lorries, from one from FedEx and another from AIM Logistics

:07:01. > :07:02.Both companies have expressed sympathies

:07:03. > :07:05.for those who lost loved ones and to the four people, including a

:07:06. > :07:10.five-year-old girl, who were taken to hospital.

:07:11. > :07:12.Today, IT company Wipro confirmed three of his

:07:13. > :07:15.employees died in the crash and another member of staff is seriously

:07:16. > :07:18.Grief also being felt at the church service that brought together

:07:19. > :07:21.family, friends and worshippers, each with their own thoughts of the

:07:22. > :07:33.Around 50 people on a beach in East Sussex have been treated

:07:34. > :07:40.for eye and throat irritation, caused by a suspected chemical leak.

:07:41. > :07:42.It happened at Birling Gap, with people reporting painful,

:07:43. > :07:44.stinging eyes and difficulties breathing after what was described

:07:45. > :07:50.Sussex Police say the unknown haze is coming in from the sea,

:07:51. > :07:53.People living nearby are advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

:07:54. > :07:58.Our correspondent Adina Campbell joins me now, what's the latest?

:07:59. > :08:05.As you say, dozens of people have reported problems with their eyes

:08:06. > :08:10.and throat as a result of this suspected chemical leak. What we do

:08:11. > :08:13.know tonight is that 50 people have been treated by the emergency

:08:14. > :08:17.services for those problems. It's not clear at this stage what's

:08:18. > :08:23.caused this. It is being described as an "unknown haze coming from the

:08:24. > :08:29.sea." Birling Gap is a popular holiday spot. Lots of people go

:08:30. > :08:34.there during the summer but tonight the area is being completely

:08:35. > :08:37.evacuated. We also know the RNLI have sent lifeboats along the

:08:38. > :08:42.shoreline to check people are safe. One has had a doctor on board. The

:08:43. > :08:48.emergency services are saying that people in the air should keep doors

:08:49. > :08:49.and windows shut as you said, and surrounding roads have also been

:08:50. > :08:50.closed off. Jeremy Corbyn has defended

:08:51. > :08:54.Labour's policy shift in advocating the UK remain

:08:55. > :08:58.in the EU's single market and customs union during any

:08:59. > :09:00.transitional period after Brexit. He says it's the best way

:09:01. > :09:03.to safeguard jobs and the economy. The move would mean the continued

:09:04. > :09:06.free movement of people, and ongoing payments to Brussels,

:09:07. > :09:08.after EU membership Our political correspondent

:09:09. > :09:16.Iain Watson reports. Labour's leadership have

:09:17. > :09:20.always been clear - they respect the result of the EU

:09:21. > :09:23.referendum but they've been less clear about what sort

:09:24. > :09:27.of Brexit they want. But now the shadow Brexit secretary

:09:28. > :09:30.and the Labour Leader have agreed on a direction of travel

:09:31. > :09:32.in a transitional period, immediately after we leave the EU,

:09:33. > :09:41.nothing much would change at all. Writing in the Observer Kier Starmer

:09:42. > :09:44.says, "We would seek to remain in the customs union within the EU

:09:45. > :09:47.and within the single market It means we would be abide

:09:48. > :09:51.by the common rules of both. Customs union membership

:09:52. > :09:53.allows our goods to flow freely across the EU but it also

:09:54. > :09:59.restricts our ability to make Being inside the single market means

:10:00. > :10:05.good and finance can move relatively Never mind talks between

:10:06. > :10:14.Britain and Brussels, as I understand it, there's been

:10:15. > :10:16.intense negotiations within Labour's Well, what does abiding by EU

:10:17. > :10:23.rules actually mean? It would mean, for example,

:10:24. > :10:25.the continuation of free movement of labour, making it difficult

:10:26. > :10:29.to control EU migration, but just how long would Labour's

:10:30. > :10:36.transitional period actually last? I hear the Government is thinking

:10:37. > :10:39.in terms of two years but we're not putting a time limit on it,

:10:40. > :10:43.what we will say is we need to reach an arrangement that protects

:10:44. > :10:45.the long-term trading relationship between Britain and Europe

:10:46. > :10:48.and jobs in this country. Jeremy Corbyn was in the spotlight

:10:49. > :10:51.in Edinburgh today talking about Brexit but behind the scenes,

:10:52. > :10:54.some of his own MPs wanted to go further and commit to permanent

:10:55. > :10:57.single market membership. What people would now like to see,

:10:58. > :11:00.building on this important step forward, is for the Labour Party

:11:01. > :11:04.to commit to single market membership and customs union

:11:05. > :11:07.after the transition period, after the UK has left

:11:08. > :11:12.the European Union. But some Labour MPs who backed

:11:13. > :11:15.Brexit don't want to see the leader moving any further

:11:16. > :11:16.in that direction. I've not been on a journey,

:11:17. > :11:22.so I think people can keep the faith with those of us,

:11:23. > :11:27.Labour MPs, who campaigned to come out, and to know that we're not

:11:28. > :11:30.doing any ratting or U-Turning It's a difficult balancing

:11:31. > :11:33.act appealing to both Jeremy Corbyn did it at the last

:11:34. > :11:37.election but that may be difficult to repeat

:11:38. > :11:39.as he clarifies his A 31-year old man has been arrested

:11:40. > :11:51.on suspicion of murder, after the body of a young child

:11:52. > :11:54.was found in a house in Wythenshawe in south Manchester,

:11:55. > :11:56.early this morning. A man and a woman who'd also

:11:57. > :11:59.suffered serious injuries had left for hospital before

:12:00. > :12:01.officers arrived, following reports The 51st Notting Hill Carnival has

:12:02. > :12:13.opened in West London, with the release of doves

:12:14. > :12:15.and multi-faith prayers in memory of those who died

:12:16. > :12:17.in the Grenfell Tower Firefighters and paramedics

:12:18. > :12:21.were among those who bowed Carnival-goers have been asked

:12:22. > :12:25.to wear something green, to remember those affected

:12:26. > :12:26.by the tragedy. From Notting Hill,

:12:27. > :12:38.Elaine Dunkley reports. With the joyous sounds and vibrant

:12:39. > :12:56.colours of Carnival, they celebrated the lives of those

:12:57. > :13:00.taken by tragedy. Many wore green for Grenfell,

:13:01. > :13:03.a colour symbolising It is in honour of the victims

:13:04. > :13:14.to be honest with you. Her house would be full,

:13:15. > :13:28.maybe 16 people sleeping on floors, At times those watching

:13:29. > :13:37.the procession were overwhelmed, saddened for those who once had

:13:38. > :13:40.a front row seat to the biggest street party in Europe,

:13:41. > :13:42.but with laughter and love, Carnival paid respect

:13:43. > :13:48.in the way it knows how. To bring us altogether

:13:49. > :13:50.as a sharing, caring community, that we are one community

:13:51. > :13:54.and together we're much more successful and together we celebrate

:13:55. > :14:01.the best of Britain. There had been moments

:14:02. > :14:03.of reflection, stillness and solitude, as well as gratitude

:14:04. > :14:06.for those who saved lives. Carnival has always had its roots

:14:07. > :14:08.firmly within this community. It was started in the 1960s

:14:09. > :14:27.by West Indian immigrants who were facing racism,

:14:28. > :14:29.inequality and poor housing. Much of this still resonates on the

:14:30. > :14:32.streets of Notting Hill today. After Grenfell Tower

:14:33. > :14:34.it is important we have a sense We have already had

:14:35. > :14:38.a minute's silence for them. In a moment of madness

:14:39. > :14:40.everyone heard that minute. Notting Hill Carnival will always

:14:41. > :14:44.symbolise celebration, freedom, revelry but in the shadow

:14:45. > :14:47.of Grenfell, it has a new purpose - as a voice for a community

:14:48. > :14:49.trying to heal. It is one of the busiest

:14:50. > :14:55.commuter routes in Scotland, and later this week drivers

:14:56. > :14:57.will have a new bridge to cross the Firth of Forth,

:14:58. > :15:01.between Edinburgh and Fife. The Queensferry Crossing,

:15:02. > :15:03.will sit alongside the iconic Forth Rail Bridge,

:15:04. > :15:05.as well as the current road bridge, and is the longest

:15:06. > :15:07.of its kind in the world. With more details here's our

:15:08. > :15:10.Scotland Correspondent Lorna Gordon, and her report contains

:15:11. > :15:17.some flashing images. Rising out of the waters

:15:18. > :15:21.of the Forth, the Queensferry crossing, linking

:15:22. > :15:25.Edinburgh and Fife. The bridge's cantilevers designed,

:15:26. > :15:28.catching the light as is soars 15,000 people worked on this huge

:15:29. > :15:33.construction project. The bridge came in under budget

:15:34. > :15:36.but delayed and was not without its difficulties for those

:15:37. > :15:38.involved in its build. Some days you can't walk

:15:39. > :15:45.on the deck, you have to clear Up the towers there

:15:46. > :15:50.are limits and you have Then the horizontal

:15:51. > :15:54.rain that goes with it. From the crossing's towers

:15:55. > :16:02.to its viaduct, it's taken six years for this structure

:16:03. > :16:04.to take its final shape. The deck sections moving

:16:05. > :16:08.slowly into place, the most visible part

:16:09. > :16:10.of a complicated The nature of this bridge

:16:11. > :16:15.is such that, for example, there are no joints in it and that

:16:16. > :16:18.means the amounts of maintenance The other thing is the shape

:16:19. > :16:25.of the bridge, it is to reduce the surface area, so there is a

:16:26. > :16:28.limited amount of painting Then we wanted to make it

:16:29. > :16:31.weather-proof, hence When this bridge opens to traffic,

:16:32. > :16:39.this road will become a motorway and tens of thousands of vehicles

:16:40. > :16:43.will use it every day. This has been described

:16:44. > :16:45.as the biggest infrastructure project here in Scotland

:16:46. > :16:53.for a generation. The Queensferry Crossing,

:16:54. > :16:56.the longest three-tower cable-stayed bridge in the world is now

:16:57. > :16:59.finally about to open. And with three bridges spanning

:17:00. > :17:01.three different centuries now standing side-by-side,

:17:02. > :17:04.what of the view from the shore? It surprises me how the new bridge

:17:05. > :17:11.actually compliments the other two. It is very different, the cable

:17:12. > :17:15.stays, they are like sails, The other bridges have

:17:16. > :17:23.different visual qualities. You have the redness and geometry

:17:24. > :17:27.and virtuosity of the rail bridge and the minimal quality

:17:28. > :17:29.to the 1960s' road bridge. The old and the new side-by-side

:17:30. > :17:34.as the Queensferry crossing gets ready to carry travellers

:17:35. > :17:36.through the century to come. Lorna Gordon BBC News

:17:37. > :17:44.at the Queensferry Crossing. With all the sport, here's

:17:45. > :17:48.John Watson at the BBC Sport Centre. Floyd Mayweather says he's retired

:17:49. > :17:53.for good after victory over Conor McGergor

:17:54. > :17:55.in their super-fight in Las Vegas. Despite appearing in his first

:17:56. > :18:00.professional boxing bout, the Irishman lasted

:18:01. > :18:14.until the tenth round. With many believing this fight to be

:18:15. > :18:20.a mis-match, Floyd May weather wags made to work by Connor McGregor in

:18:21. > :18:25.confirming his position as one of boxing all-time greats. A sense of

:18:26. > :18:30.hope and excitement for McGregor's were spects had built throughout the

:18:31. > :18:35.day with Irish fans turning this desert city green. There is a

:18:36. > :18:42.punters a chance, if he can land a left-hand shot, he could do with it.

:18:43. > :18:49.Floyd Mayweather want without support. 49 and he is going to do

:18:50. > :18:57.it, put your money where your mouth is. McGregor emerged all guns

:18:58. > :19:02.placing, catching Mayweather with some shots. An upset looked possible

:19:03. > :19:07.but the speed of Mayweather ground the Irishman round and by the ninth

:19:08. > :19:14.round McGregor was in trouble. He was clinging to ropes. The end soon

:19:15. > :19:17.followed for a fate that has intrigued but also repulsed many

:19:18. > :19:23.given the language and behaviour of both men in the about build-up After

:19:24. > :19:29.21 years in the sport of boxing, you know I have had some great fights, I

:19:30. > :19:34.had some boring fights but at the end of the day, he I will always be

:19:35. > :19:41.remembered as a winner. Many believed this fight would be a farce

:19:42. > :19:45.in the end it was far from it but the controversies remain, so, too,

:19:46. > :19:48.about a fight that was unapoll jetically put on primarily for the

:19:49. > :19:52.money An enjoyable experience and learning experience. I'm very happy.

:19:53. > :19:56.Of course I would love the win. Two of sport's great smoemen delivered

:19:57. > :19:58.entertainment but with the cheques cashed and the hype at an end, the

:19:59. > :20:00.circus has now left town. Match of the Day 2 follows the news,

:20:01. > :20:04.so if you want to wait for today's Arsenal slipped to their heaviest

:20:05. > :20:08.Premier League defeat in almost two years as they were beaten 4-0

:20:09. > :20:10.by Liverpool at Anfield. The win moves them up

:20:11. > :20:14.to second in the table. Elsewhere, champions

:20:15. > :20:17.Chelsea beat Everton 2-0, while in the Scottish Premiership,

:20:18. > :20:20.it was one apiece between Dundee and Hibernian, and Rangers won 3-1

:20:21. > :20:22.at Ross County. England captain Joe Root helped

:20:26. > :20:28.of the third day of the second Whether he can steer them

:20:29. > :20:49.to victory remains to be seen. Cheap runs at head Ily. England
