0:00:08 > 0:00:12announcing that he is standing down as Zimbabwe's President.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15Hours after a visit from the generals who moved against him -

0:00:15 > 0:00:18he appears to be responding to an ultimatum to

0:00:18 > 0:00:24resign by tomorrow.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27That came from his old comrades in the ruling party Zanu-PF -

0:00:27 > 0:00:33which has already replaced him as its leader.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36We'll have the latest from Harare as we await Mr Mugabe's

0:00:36 > 0:00:41address to Zimbabweans - 37 years after he came to power.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43Also this evening: Here, the Chancellor says he'll use

0:00:43 > 0:00:53this week's budget to speed up the building of new homes.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56And England make it through to the semifinals

0:00:56 > 0:01:00of the Rugby League World Cup.

0:01:16 > 0:01:17Good evening.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20Robert Mugabe is preparing to address his fellow Zimbabweans -

0:01:20 > 0:01:22and is expected to announce that he is standing

0:01:22 > 0:01:25down as President - after nearly four decades in power.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29Time appeared to run out for Mr Mugabe today

0:01:29 > 0:01:33after his own party gave him an ultimatum to resign -

0:01:33 > 0:01:37and he was visited by the army officers who moved against him.

0:01:37 > 0:01:47Let's cross live to our Africa Editor Fergal Keane.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53This city is tonight tented anticipation, because we are told

0:01:53 > 0:01:57that possibly even within the next hour, President Robert Mugabe will

0:01:57 > 0:02:01go on state television and address the nation. Reuters is saying he has

0:02:01 > 0:02:05reached a deal with the military earlier today, and is preparing to

0:02:05 > 0:02:11stand down. That isn't confirmed, but these reports come at the end of

0:02:11 > 0:02:13another extraordinary day here.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16It began today with this visit from the generals.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18Bearing a message that left Mr Mugabe in no doubt that

0:02:18 > 0:02:20all support had now drained away from him.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23At the same time, his own party was meeting to remove him

0:02:23 > 0:02:25from the leadership.

0:02:25 > 0:02:29It was a jury that celebrated its way to the verdict.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31The old man is coming, they sang.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34Actually, he was on the way out.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37How quickly loyalties have turned.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40An old friend read out the sentence.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56It had the feel of a show trial.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Mr Mugabe's wife, Grace, was kicked out of the party,

0:02:59 > 0:03:03and prosecution demanded.

0:03:03 > 0:03:04It has to be over now.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06Oh, yes.

0:03:06 > 0:03:07It's over.

0:03:07 > 0:03:08What he did is enough.

0:03:08 > 0:03:09Enough is enough.

0:03:09 > 0:03:14The people of Zimbabwe showed in numbers that they are fed up

0:03:14 > 0:03:20with this dynasty and, look at my back.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25This is the moment when Robert Mugabe lost power in his own party,

0:03:25 > 0:03:29the party he dominated for so long and has now been replaced as party

0:03:29 > 0:03:34leader by a man who was one of his closest allies for decades.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36A crocodile!

0:03:36 > 0:03:40The new leader, Emmerson Mnangagwa, is known as the crocodile,

0:03:40 > 0:03:43celebrated here for his ruthless cunning.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47And when it gets its prey...

0:03:47 > 0:03:50And, for decades, he enforced Robert Mugabe's will.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54The fear is that he becomes a new strongman.

0:03:54 > 0:04:00We need a deliberate process that turns power

0:04:00 > 0:04:04to an elected civilian order.

0:04:04 > 0:04:09Not someone who will be deemed and perceived to be the target

0:04:09 > 0:04:11and the beneficiary of the coup.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14That would be a disaster.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17In the centre of Harare, there was a very different atmosphere.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20Gratitude and hope for reconciliation at

0:04:20 > 0:04:22this prayer service.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26All here have borne the sufferings of the Mugabe years.

0:04:26 > 0:04:30Some were personally targeted during attacks by his supporters.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33You and your family suffered terribly at the hands of Mugabe.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35Do you feel the nightmare is now over?

0:04:35 > 0:04:39I'm just worried about obviously what's going to happen next.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41His trusted lieutenants are the ones that carried

0:04:41 > 0:04:44out his business for him, and they will be the ones

0:04:44 > 0:04:45in power in future.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49And it's a question of what happens in that transition, whether we get

0:04:49 > 0:04:55to a place where there are free and fair elections.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59These are emotions that have been pent up for years.

0:04:59 > 0:05:09Mourning for what was lost here, and daring to hope.

0:05:11 > 0:05:16So bring us up-to-date on where we stand tonight. The speculation that

0:05:16 > 0:05:22this address from Robert Mugabe will signal his departure. The

0:05:22 > 0:05:27speculation is intense. You've got to remember, the military control or

0:05:27 > 0:05:33access to Robert Mugabe. He effective house arrest. Would they

0:05:33 > 0:05:37allow television cameras and the state broadcasting service to pitch

0:05:37 > 0:05:42up and allow him to make a statement unless unless they were something

0:05:42 > 0:05:46they were sure they wanted to hear. The interesting thing will be the

0:05:46 > 0:05:51terms, though, because is he going to be allowed to go into exile to

0:05:51 > 0:05:55live in comfort somewhere else, or even stay in the country? People

0:05:55 > 0:06:00might accept that, but at the party rally today at the Central committee

0:06:00 > 0:06:04meeting, there was intense discussion about his wife, Grace,

0:06:04 > 0:06:09who faces so much opposition from people, and there are many who want

0:06:09 > 0:06:14to see her and others around her faction prosecuted.Thank you. BBC

0:06:14 > 0:06:18News will keep you up to date with what ever we hear from Harare as it

0:06:18 > 0:06:20happens.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22The Chancellor, Philip Hammond, has said he'll use this week's

0:06:22 > 0:06:24budget to speed up the building of hundreds of thousands

0:06:24 > 0:06:25of new homes.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28But Mr Hammond stressed there was no "single magic bullet"

0:06:28 > 0:06:30to increase housing supply - and the government would not

0:06:30 > 0:06:31simply "pour money in".

0:06:31 > 0:06:37Our Political Correspondent, Ben Wright, reports.

0:06:37 > 0:06:43Building up expectations ahead of the budget for a raft of measures to

0:06:43 > 0:06:47fix the housing crisis. The Chancellor wants developers to stop

0:06:47 > 0:06:50sitting on land that's been given the green light for housing. There's

0:06:50 > 0:06:54lots of things we can do using planning and intervention powers to

0:06:54 > 0:06:59get planning permission is that have been granted to be built up. We will

0:06:59 > 0:07:02use the powers of the state and the planning system, but we are

0:07:02 > 0:07:08determined to get those missing homes built.Today Mr Hammond gave

0:07:08 > 0:07:12hints about government help for smaller house builders and a

0:07:12 > 0:07:25possible cut to stamp duty. Housing seems set to be the centrepiece of

0:07:25 > 0:07:27the budget, but will it add up to the giant house-building leapt

0:07:27 > 0:07:29another Cabinet Minister has called for? Labour says the government

0:07:29 > 0:07:31should borrow more money for house-building and stretched public

0:07:31 > 0:07:36services.Stop giving tax cuts to the rich and invest in public

0:07:36 > 0:07:42services.The head of the NHS in England says health needs a £4

0:07:42 > 0:07:45billion spending boost. The Chancellor says he will seek to

0:07:45 > 0:07:50address particular pressure points, but a splurge in any one area looks

0:07:50 > 0:07:55unlikely. Balancing the books is still the age. There will be cash

0:07:55 > 0:08:01for driverless technology and artificial intelligence, but will

0:08:01 > 0:08:04robots put millions of us out of work? The Chancellor said that will

0:08:04 > 0:08:10not happen, and said this.Where are these unemployed people? There are

0:08:10 > 0:08:17no unemployed people because we have created job since 2010.Mr Hammond

0:08:17 > 0:08:21said he meant that technological change over the years has not left

0:08:21 > 0:08:25people out of work. He knows the contents of his budget box will be

0:08:25 > 0:08:31crucial to Theresa May's struggling government, as well as his own

0:08:31 > 0:08:37fortunes. More money has been argued as being needed to be spent on the

0:08:37 > 0:08:41health service and house-building. Some Tories are urging him to come

0:08:41 > 0:08:45up with new ideas. The Chancellor knows there are critical Tory MPs

0:08:45 > 0:08:50who want him out of his job because they don't think his heart is in the

0:08:50 > 0:08:57task of getting Britain out of the EU.We will not be defined by...The

0:08:57 > 0:09:02outcome of the Brexit negotiations will matter more than a single

0:09:02 > 0:09:05budget, and tomorrow, a core of ministers will discuss how to

0:09:05 > 0:09:11unblock talks, knowing that offering more money may be key.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13A British sailor has died after being swept overboard

0:09:13 > 0:09:14during an international yacht race.

0:09:14 > 0:09:1660-year-old Simon Speirs from Bristol was sailing

0:09:16 > 0:09:18between South Africa and Australia, as part of

0:09:18 > 0:09:19the Clipper Round the World Race.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21The retired solicitor, who was wearing a life

0:09:21 > 0:09:23jacket and safety tether, was rescued from the water,

0:09:23 > 0:09:26but never regained consciousness.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28Police in Dorset say they're treating the death of the teenager

0:09:28 > 0:09:30Gaia Pope as unexplained.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32The 19-year-old's body was found yesterday afternoon close

0:09:32 > 0:09:35to a coastal path near Swanage.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37She was last seen alive 12 days ago.

0:09:37 > 0:09:41Her family have said they are "absolutely devastated".

0:09:41 > 0:09:44The Conservative MP Anna Soubry says her office has received

0:09:44 > 0:09:4713 death threats against her over the last week.

0:09:47 > 0:09:51She says the messages were directly linked to the way she and other

0:09:51 > 0:09:54party members were branded "Brexit mutineers" by

0:09:54 > 0:09:55The Daily Telegraph newspaper.

0:09:55 > 0:10:02She said that she had been "quite frightened" by the threats.

0:10:02 > 0:10:04A huge air and sea search involving five countries,

0:10:04 > 0:10:06and including the Royal Navy, is underway to try and locate

0:10:06 > 0:10:07an Argentine submarine.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10The San Juan has been missing since Wednesday,

0:10:10 > 0:10:12with 44 crew on board.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14Contact was lost as it returned from a routine mission

0:10:14 > 0:10:18near the southern-most tip of South America, but there are now

0:10:18 > 0:10:22signals being detected which may provide clues as to its location.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25Dan Johnson reports.

0:10:25 > 0:10:30This is a vessel designed to play hide and seek in the deepest depths.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33So finding the San Juan, its crew, and the 22 torpedoes it carries,

0:10:33 > 0:10:36is a real challenge.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38Fresh satellite signals, albeit weak ones,

0:10:38 > 0:10:44have revived hopes of rescue.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47Seven call attempts have been received, says the Navy spokesman,

0:10:47 > 0:10:49but they were incomplete and need to be checked

0:10:49 > 0:10:52to pinpoint the location.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55He stressed they are making every effort to find the submarine,

0:10:55 > 0:11:00searching the open ocean and the sea bed.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02This is now an international effort.

0:11:02 > 0:11:08The US Navy has flown in deep-sea rescue equipment, and HMS Protector,

0:11:08 > 0:11:13the Royal Navy's Arctic patrol ship, has been diverted to help

0:11:13 > 0:11:17scan beneath the waves of the South Atlantic Ocean.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20The San Juan left the southern port of Ushuaia last Monday

0:11:20 > 0:11:22after a routine mission.

0:11:22 > 0:11:26It was making the 2,000 mile journey back to its base in Mar del Plata,

0:11:26 > 0:11:29not far from Argentina's capital.

0:11:29 > 0:11:36The search is focused around halfway, in the San Jorge Gulf,

0:11:36 > 0:11:39where the sub last made contact on Wednesday.

0:11:39 > 0:11:44One of the 44 crew members is Argentina's first woman Sub-Mariner.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47The best hope for finding her and her crew mates alive,

0:11:47 > 0:11:51is that a power failure knocked out the submarine's communications.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54Six countries are now hunting for the San Juan,

0:11:54 > 0:11:57but it's lost in a huge area of ocean, and bad weather is making

0:11:57 > 0:11:59a difficult job even harder.

0:11:59 > 0:12:03Dan Johnson, BBC News.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05With all the sport, here's Lizzie Greenwood Hughes

0:12:05 > 0:12:09at the BBC Sport Centre.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11England are through to the semifinals of

0:12:11 > 0:12:14the Rugby league World Cup.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17They beat co-hosts Papua New Guinea 36-6 to set-up a last four match

0:12:17 > 0:12:18against Tonga next weekend.

0:12:18 > 0:12:27John Watson has the details.

0:12:27 > 0:12:34Flying the flag down under. A trip worth making were England to reach

0:12:34 > 0:12:37the semifinals. Her Papua New Guinea, Rugby League is their

0:12:37 > 0:12:42national sport, and they are fanatical. Silence the crowd, and

0:12:42 > 0:12:47you may just silence the team. England did just that.Yet another

0:12:47 > 0:12:52try for Jermaine McGillvary.Ten tries, ten matches. Papua New Guinea

0:12:52 > 0:12:57were trying to knock England off their stride, but the vast hand of

0:12:57 > 0:13:02Kallum Watkins a moment of magic as McGilvray found the line again.

0:13:02 > 0:13:12Watkins died the try line... -- Watkins died the try line and that

0:13:12 > 0:13:21semifinal spot. Ryan Hall finished with a flourish.A bit scratchy at

0:13:21 > 0:13:26times, so still a lot to work on. Really pleased to be progressing in

0:13:26 > 0:13:31the competition. The boys are looking forward to it. To be in the

0:13:31 > 0:13:36semifinal is something special.Time for the fans to extend their stay.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Two games for England to find the fluency that will take them to the

0:13:39 > 0:13:44title.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46David Moyes has lost his first game in charge at West Ham.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49They were beaten 2-0 by Watford in today's only

0:13:49 > 0:13:50Premier League match.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52Richarlison scoring a brilliant second goal at Vicarage Road.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55West Ham are third from bottom after just two wins this season.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57Hearts drew their first game of the season at Tynecastle

0:13:57 > 0:13:59after their new main stand was belatedly given a safety

0:13:59 > 0:14:02certificate this morning.

0:14:02 > 0:14:06The score was 1-1 against Partick Thistle.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08Chris Coleman, who resigned as Wales manager on Friday,

0:14:08 > 0:14:10has taken charge of the struggling Championship side Sunderland.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13Coleman led Wales to their highest world ranking and took them

0:14:13 > 0:14:14to the semifinals of the Euros.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16Sunderland are currently bottom of the table

0:14:16 > 0:14:17after just one win this year.

0:14:17 > 0:14:21He'll be their eighth manager in the past six years.

0:14:21 > 0:14:28English golfer Tommy Fleetwood held-off a late charge

0:14:28 > 0:14:32from Justin Rose to win the Race to Dubai title as the season's

0:14:32 > 0:14:33European Number One.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35Fleetwood only finished 21st in the final event -

0:14:35 > 0:14:38The Tour Championship - but it was enough to top the money

0:14:38 > 0:14:46list after Rose fell apart in his final few holes.

0:14:46 > 0:14:50England's women's cricketers could still draw the Ashes Series after a

0:14:50 > 0:14:55win in camera by 40 runs. Australia have already retained the trophy,

0:14:55 > 0:15:00but England have close the gap in the multiformat points series and a

0:15:00 > 0:15:07win in the final game will level the series.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09Great Britain's four man bobsleigh team have won a surprise bronze

0:15:09 > 0:15:12medal at the second World Cup event in the USA.
