0:00:21 > 0:00:23Good afternoon.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26Criticism is growing over the actions of two former police

0:00:26 > 0:00:30officers who leaked allegations that legal pornographic images had been

0:00:30 > 0:00:32found on a work computer of the Cabinet minister Damian

0:00:32 > 0:00:35Green.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37The former chief constable of Greater Manchester,

0:00:37 > 0:00:41Sir Peter Fahy, strongly rejected suggestions that it was in

0:00:41 > 0:00:45the public interest to disclose information allegedly found

0:00:45 > 0:00:49during the course of an unrelated investigation in 2008.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52He stressed that the officers were entering "dangerous territory".

0:00:52 > 0:01:02Here's our Political Correspondent, Tom Barton.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06Police raided Damian Green's Berlin entry Officer in 2008,

0:01:06 > 0:01:12no-one would have imagined the obligations would still be

0:01:12 > 0:01:14resonating nine years later.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17The raid was part of an inquiry into Home Office leaks,

0:01:17 > 0:01:20and no-one was charged.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22But unrelated allegations, denied by Mr Green,

0:01:22 > 0:01:25that legal pornography was found on a computer seized by police,

0:01:25 > 0:01:29have sparked a furious row.

0:01:29 > 0:01:37The allegations were originally made by former Met assistant

0:01:37 > 0:01:39comissioner Bob Quick.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41While yesterday, retired Met Detective Neil Lewis said he had

0:01:41 > 0:01:44no doubt whatsoever that Mr Green had been reviewing the material.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46It is ridiculous to suggest that anybody else could have done it.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49But today, the former chief constable of Greater Manchester

0:01:49 > 0:01:57Police attacked their decision to speak out.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Most police officers would be very uncomfortable about the police

0:02:00 > 0:02:07getting involved in making judgments about whether a politician is lying

0:02:07 > 0:02:15or not, and breaching the duty of keeping matters confidential.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17This row matters, because Damian Green is Theresa May's closest

0:02:17 > 0:02:20political ally and it pits his word against those of two

0:02:20 > 0:02:21former police officers.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24But Conservative allies have come to his aid.

0:02:24 > 0:02:34Brexit secretary David Davis warning Downing Street not to fire him.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40While this former Cabinet minister questioned the conduct of

0:02:40 > 0:02:41the officers making the allegations.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44If you think something's relevant, you do it by proper official means.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47You do not go freelancing, as these two officers have done,

0:02:47 > 0:02:49and it has the smack of the police state about it.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51I didn't download or look at pornography...

0:02:51 > 0:02:53Damian Green has consistently denied the allegations.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55He's waiting to hear the results of a Cabinet Office

0:02:55 > 0:02:56investigation into them.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59We're told that report could be on the Prime Minister's desk

0:02:59 > 0:03:02within days.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05Barclays bank says it will no longer offer a Russian anti virus

0:03:05 > 0:03:08software free to customers.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11It is after officials recommended government departments to stop

0:03:11 > 0:03:14using Kaspersky Lab products because of fears it could be

0:03:14 > 0:03:17exploited by the Kremlin. The National Cyber Security Centre

0:03:17 > 0:03:21says the advice doesn't apply to domestic users.

0:03:21 > 0:03:26Kaspersky Lab denies any links to the Russian government.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31Our Business Correspondent Joe Lynam is here.

0:03:31 > 0:03:37What more can you tell us?For antivirus software to work it needs

0:03:37 > 0:03:42access to your entire computer and all the files in order to protect

0:03:42 > 0:03:46them from malware and viruses. Now the National Cyber Security Centre

0:03:46 > 0:03:50has given this advice about Kaspersky and Barclays has followed

0:03:50 > 0:03:55suit, it is because they are worried that the very access to your

0:03:55 > 0:03:59computer could expose your computer to Russian hackers, particularly the

0:03:59 > 0:04:05Russian government. So Barclays has decided it will no longer give this

0:04:05 > 0:04:10software for free. It has been doing so for new current account users.

0:04:10 > 0:04:16Kaspersky is denied all wrongdoing and that it has any links to the

0:04:16 > 0:04:22Kremlin. The important thing for users to note is do not uninstall

0:04:22 > 0:04:25the software. By doing that you could then suddenly expose yourself

0:04:25 > 0:04:31to malware antivirus and Kaspersky has also issued that same advice.

0:04:31 > 0:04:32Joe, thank you very much.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34Joe, thank you very much.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36US media reports say Donald Trump's former

0:04:36 > 0:04:38national security adviser, Michael Flynn - who's

0:04:38 > 0:04:41admitted lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia -

0:04:41 > 0:04:43is prepared to give testimony that implicates the President's

0:04:43 > 0:04:46son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49The White House says Mr Flynn has implicated nobody but himself

0:04:49 > 0:04:51in the investigation into alleged collusion between Moscow

0:04:51 > 0:04:54and Mr Trump's team before he came to power.

0:04:54 > 0:04:59Laura Bicker reports.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02Michael Flynn, a retired three-star general, left the court

0:05:02 > 0:05:05in Washington to a familiar chant.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08"Lock him up."

0:05:08 > 0:05:11He'd once encouraged Donald Trump supporters to use a similar version

0:05:11 > 0:05:14against rival Hillary Clinton.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17The 58-year-old played a key part in Mr Trump's campaign

0:05:17 > 0:05:18and often travelled with him.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21If I did a tenth, a tenth of what she did,

0:05:21 > 0:05:24I would be in jail today.

0:05:24 > 0:05:28He was rewarded with the post of National Security Adviser,

0:05:28 > 0:05:31but was forced to resign after just 23 days when his contacts

0:05:31 > 0:05:35with Russia to discuss US sanctions were disclosed.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38On the 29th of December, Michael Flynn spoke

0:05:38 > 0:05:41to the Russian Ambassador on the phone in the first

0:05:41 > 0:05:44of a series of calls.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46On the 15th of January, Vice President Mike Pence said that

0:05:46 > 0:05:49sanctions were not discussed in those calls.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51Only after the 9th of February, when a newspaper revealed

0:05:51 > 0:05:54General Flynn did discuss sanctions, did pressure increase

0:05:54 > 0:05:58and Michael Flynn lost his job.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01As part of his guilty plea, prosecutors said Mr Flynn is now

0:06:01 > 0:06:03cooperating with the investigation.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06US media claims he will testify that senior members of the Trump team,

0:06:06 > 0:06:09including Mr Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, encouraged

0:06:09 > 0:06:12Flynn to make contact with Russian officials.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14The White House is now trying to distance itself from Flynn's

0:06:14 > 0:06:17actions and the lies he told to the FBI, but having reached

0:06:17 > 0:06:20a plea bargain to co-operate, what else has Mr Flynn told

0:06:20 > 0:06:27the enquiry and what further revelations are to come?

0:06:27 > 0:06:30A 14-year-old boy, who was hit by a car on a motorway,

0:06:30 > 0:06:32has died in hospital.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34Police say the boy, who hasn't been named,

0:06:34 > 0:06:37was found unconscious on the hard shoulder of the M67

0:06:37 > 0:06:39in Greater Manchester last night.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42He was discovered near junction 3 of the motorway in Hyde.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45Officers believe he was struck by a car and have appealed

0:06:45 > 0:06:48for witnesses to come forward.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52In Germany police in the city of Hannover have used used water

0:06:52 > 0:06:54cannon against demonstrators who were trying to stop delegates

0:06:54 > 0:06:56getting into the far right Alternative for

0:06:56 > 0:06:59Germany party conference.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01Police cleared a path for the delegates after they doused

0:07:01 > 0:07:05protesters with water in temperatures that

0:07:05 > 0:07:09were just above freezing.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12A driver is recovering from a "terrifying ordeal"

0:07:12 > 0:07:16which saw his van teeter over the edge of a busy motorway bridge.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20Emergency services were called to the scene on the northbound

0:07:20 > 0:07:22carriageway of the A1M in West Yorkshire.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25It's thought the icy conditions caused the accident shortly before

0:07:25 > 0:07:28six yesterday morning.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32PC Martin Willis tweeted about how he had to grab the vehicle to stop

0:07:32 > 0:07:37it swaying in the wind.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40With all the sport here's Mike Bushell at the BBC Sport Centre.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43Good afternoon.

0:07:43 > 0:07:45It's a case of so near, and yet so far, for England's

0:07:45 > 0:07:47rugby league team.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49Once again, it's Australia who are world champions,

0:07:49 > 0:07:51after they won the final 6-0 in Brisbane.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53However, England had several chances to win,

0:07:53 > 0:08:00and pushed the hosts all the way, as Adam Wild reports.

0:08:00 > 0:08:07Sometimes you have to go a long way to prove just how far you have come.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11For England the first rugby league World Cup final in more than 20

0:08:11 > 0:08:16years, but against Australia in Australia. For those in white there

0:08:16 > 0:08:22is no tougher test.England hope for glory, Australia expects.From the

0:08:22 > 0:08:30very first this was always a battle, brutal at times. The stakes so high

0:08:30 > 0:08:34the scoreline staying frustratingly low. Boyd Cordner the only want to

0:08:34 > 0:08:40find a way to break through. Australia ahead by the tightest

0:08:40 > 0:08:44margin with England and able to close that gap. They needed luck. In

0:08:44 > 0:08:51the second half Michael Morgan's try was ruled out for obstruction. A

0:08:51 > 0:08:56small celebration but they would not be much more for those England fans.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00This was truly agonising. The World Cup summed up perfectly here, Kallum

0:09:00 > 0:09:04Watkins with a chance, but falling painfully short with the very

0:09:04 > 0:09:12faintest final touch. Those England players sink to their ears in utter

0:09:12 > 0:09:16desperation. But it is Australia who are world champions again. They have

0:09:16 > 0:09:20come a long way in the last few years and have improved a lot and

0:09:20 > 0:09:26will keep on improving. They are disappointed, but we have to move on

0:09:26 > 0:09:31from this.To get so close England have shown how far they have come

0:09:31 > 0:09:37back to match the mighty Australians they have a little further to go.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39Down in the south of Australia, England's cricketers took four

0:09:39 > 0:09:41wickets on the first day of the second Ashes

0:09:41 > 0:09:42Test in Adelaide.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44As our sports correspondent Andy Swiss now reports from there,

0:09:44 > 0:09:50it's the hosts who will feel they have the upper hand.

0:09:50 > 0:09:56Get your souvenir programmes here.A date for Ashes history and a decent

0:09:56 > 0:10:02waterproof. Very English weather, so might it help England's bowlers? Joe

0:10:02 > 0:10:07Root put England in to bat, risky. It did not look the great decision.

0:10:07 > 0:10:13After a rain delay England found an unlikely breakthrough, Miss Field, a

0:10:13 > 0:10:17break-up and a bold eye and Cameron Bancroft rolled out for ten. Where

0:10:17 > 0:10:23works induced the David Warner waft, the temperature began rising. New

0:10:23 > 0:10:29batsman Steve Smith and Stuart Broad exchanging pleasantries. Mark

0:10:29 > 0:10:35Stoneman was on his way to a half-century. England were barely

0:10:35 > 0:10:39clinging on, but a state-owned tonight, enter Anderson.And

0:10:39 > 0:10:45Anderson strikes. What followed was even better as debutant Craig over

0:10:45 > 0:10:51ten did this to the well's number one batsman. Smith at 440, easy this

0:10:51 > 0:10:57test cricket, isn't it? But soon England were reminded it is anything

0:10:57 > 0:11:01but as Australia past 200 before the close. The visitors still with

0:11:01 > 0:11:06plenty of work to do after a day of mixed fortune. We are happy, we

0:11:06 > 0:11:10bowled well all day. We did not get the rewards, but we will come back

0:11:10 > 0:11:15tomorrow with the new ball and hopefully get a couple of early

0:11:15 > 0:11:18ones.After a bad start some encouraging signs for England but

0:11:18 > 0:11:23they need quick wickets on day two if they're brave decision to bowl is

0:11:23 > 0:11:27to really pay off. Andy Swiss, BBC News, Adelaide.

0:11:27 > 0:11:28Andy Swiss, BBC News, Adelaide.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30In the Premier League, Chelsea can move level

0:11:30 > 0:11:32on points with second placed Manchester United, with a win over

0:11:32 > 0:11:34Newcastle this lunchtime.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36The visitors haven't won in six weeks, but Dwight Gayle

0:11:36 > 0:11:38put Newcastle ahead, just as he did at Old

0:11:38 > 0:11:39Trafford last month.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41But Chelsea equalised nine minutes later through

0:11:41 > 0:11:42the Belgian Eden Hazard.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44And Alvaro Morata has now put Chelsea ahead.

0:11:44 > 0:11:45That's all the sport for now.

0:11:45 > 0:11:49But stay on BBC One for live snooker from the UK Championship in York,

0:11:49 > 0:11:51followed by the last of the rugby union autumn internationals, Wales

0:11:51 > 0:11:54againt South Africa, at 2 o'clock.

0:11:54 > 0:11:58The next news on BBC One is at five to six, bye for now.
