0:00:21 > 0:00:24Good afternoon.

0:00:24 > 0:00:28A special meeting to elect a new leader of South Africa's

0:00:28 > 0:00:30governing party, the ANC, has been delayed by arguments over

0:00:30 > 0:00:33who is allowed to vote.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35President Jacob Zuma, who's been beset by allegations

0:00:35 > 0:00:37of corruption, is standing down.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41There are fears among members that the vote could split the party

0:00:41 > 0:00:42ahead of the next presidential election in 2019.

0:00:42 > 0:00:48Our correspondent Pumza Fihlani reports.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54A call for change by members of the embattled African National

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Congress.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59These are some of the delegates who will be voting for the

0:00:59 > 0:01:00ANC's next leader.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03The party has never been more divided, but it is

0:01:03 > 0:01:06trying to present a united front.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08These people waiting patiently have the future

0:01:08 > 0:01:14of the ANC in their hands, and possibly even South Africa's.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16The front-runners are ANC veteran Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, and deputy

0:01:16 > 0:01:19president Cyril Ramaphosa.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22Under Jacob Zuma's leadership, the party has

0:01:22 > 0:01:27been plagued by allegations of corruption and cronyism, and the row

0:01:27 > 0:01:30over his governance has split the party down the middle.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32There is a desire that the vote should bring Africa's

0:01:32 > 0:01:35oldest liberation movement back together.

0:01:35 > 0:01:37I hope that on the conference floor people find one

0:01:37 > 0:01:39another, because it has not been easy over

0:01:39 > 0:01:43the last five years to come here.

0:01:43 > 0:01:47It is a hope against hope, maybe, but I hope that the life of the

0:01:47 > 0:01:49ANC which is dying slowly, somehow surgery will be

0:01:49 > 0:01:53performed here today and that the patient will be saved.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57The ANC has been losing support in the last few years,

0:01:57 > 0:01:59and the two candidates have very different ideas on

0:01:59 > 0:02:01how to arrest that decline.

0:02:01 > 0:02:06It has been such a bitter fight that whoever wins will have the difficult

0:02:06 > 0:02:09task of bringing the opposing faction on board but with a national

0:02:09 > 0:02:11election in just two years, many

0:02:11 > 0:02:14say unless the party cleans up house, it could find

0:02:14 > 0:02:17itself out of power for the first time since the end of apartheid.

0:02:17 > 0:02:22Pumza Fihlani, BBC News, Johannesburg.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25Barry Sherman, a billionaire who founded Canada's largest

0:02:25 > 0:02:28drugs firm, and his wife, Honey, have been found dead

0:02:28 > 0:02:31at their home in Toronto.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34Police described the deaths as suspicious, but said they were not

0:02:34 > 0:02:36being treated as murder.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38Barry Sherman was one of Canada's richest people.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40Angus Crawford reports.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46One of Toronto's richest suburbs, a house for sale.

0:02:46 > 0:02:52In the basement, a discovery, two bodies, a man and a woman.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54Barry Sherman and his wife, Honey, one of the richest

0:02:54 > 0:02:56couples in the country.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58Police can't yet say what happened.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01The circumstances of their death lead us to believe that there may be

0:03:01 > 0:03:03suspicious circumstances.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06It is an investigative tool.

0:03:06 > 0:03:11Until we know exactly how they died, we treat it as suspicious.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Barry Sherman, who was 75, is thought to be worth

0:03:13 > 0:03:19more than £2 billion.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23He made his money in pharmaceuticals, setting up

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Apotex in the 1970s, and building it into one

0:03:26 > 0:03:30of the biggest drugs companies in the world.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32Stepping down as chief executive in 2012, he dedicated

0:03:32 > 0:03:35himself to charity work.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38Today, Canadian premier Justin Trudeau said he and his wife

0:03:38 > 0:03:41sent their condolences to the Shermans' family and friends

0:03:41 > 0:03:47and everyone touched by their vision and spirit.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50This woman, an employee, came to the couple's home to place

0:03:50 > 0:03:51flowers and pay her respects.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55She still couldn't believe the news.

0:03:55 > 0:03:56People look up to him.

0:03:56 > 0:04:03People are in shock, crying.

0:04:03 > 0:04:09They are genuinely heartbroken.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11For now, the investigation continues into two deaths which leave

0:04:11 > 0:04:13a community in shock, and a family in mourning.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23Officials in California say the biggest of the wildfires

0:04:23 > 0:04:26which have driven tens of thousands of people from their homes now

0:04:26 > 0:04:27covers nearly 400 square miles.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30A firefighter has died tackling the flames north of Los Angeles.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32Our correspondent James Cook sent this report from

0:04:32 > 0:04:35the town of Fillmore.

0:04:38 > 0:04:4712 days on and still it burns.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51More than 8,000 men and women are now battling this blaze,

0:04:51 > 0:04:52saving homes one by one.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Not far from here, the fire claimed the life of 32-year-old

0:04:55 > 0:04:57Cory Iverson, a firefighter, a father and a husband.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59He is survived by his wife, Ashley, his two-

0:04:59 > 0:05:00year-old daughter, Evie.

0:05:00 > 0:05:10Cory and Ashley are expecting a second daughter this spring.

0:05:14 > 0:05:15The fire has destroyed homes, too.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18More than 700 of them and another 18,000 buildings remain at risk.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20This is one of five homes in this tiny neighbourhood

0:05:20 > 0:05:24which was destroyed when the flames swept through here so fast

0:05:24 > 0:05:26that firefighters had to abandon the area.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28Which ones survived and which were destroyed

0:05:28 > 0:05:33was a matter of pure luck.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37Aaron Lawson and his family were among the lucky ones.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Their home was scorched, but it survived, thanks in part

0:05:40 > 0:05:43to neighbours who lost everything but stayed to fight the fire.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46The most rewarding thing is seeing them, some of the guys

0:05:46 > 0:05:48who lost their houses, working with us, side by side,

0:05:48 > 0:05:52to keep our houses safe those first few days.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55All week, they have been racing to contain the fire,

0:05:55 > 0:05:57and with fierce winds forecast again tonight, that battle

0:05:57 > 0:05:58is about to intensify.

0:05:58 > 0:06:04James Cook, BBC News, Fillmore in California.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09The renowned scientist and television presenter Heinz Wolff

0:06:09 > 0:06:19has died at the age of 89.

0:06:31 > 0:06:31A

0:06:31 > 0:06:34With his trademark bow tie and hair, the German-born inventor became

0:06:34 > 0:06:37known to British TV audiences in the '70s and '80s

0:06:37 > 0:06:39on The Great Egg Race, which encouraged teams to invent

0:06:39 > 0:06:41useful things out of everyday objects.

0:06:41 > 0:06:45More than one million homes and offices across the UK

0:06:45 > 0:06:46still struggle to get good broadband, according

0:06:46 > 0:06:47to the communications regulator.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50Although coverage is improving, a report by Ofcom found that roughly

0:06:50 > 0:06:534% of properties in the UK were stuck with slow

0:06:53 > 0:06:53internet speeds.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55The situation remains worse in rural areas,

0:06:55 > 0:07:02with 17% of homes having a poor connection.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04With all the sport, here's Mike Bushell

0:07:04 > 0:07:11at the BBC Sport Centre.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14Another incredible batting display by Australia captain Steve Smith has

0:07:14 > 0:07:17put his side in a dominant position in the third Test in Perth.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20They lead England by 146 runs with six wickets in hand and victory

0:07:20 > 0:07:22in this match would give them the Ashes.

0:07:22 > 0:07:35Our sports correspondent Andy Swiss was watching.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38The day to remember for two Australians. For 11 Englishmen, one

0:07:38 > 0:07:46to forget. This is when their Ashes dream finally died at the hands of

0:07:46 > 0:07:49batting brilliant. First, Steve Smith resuming on 92 he soon reached

0:07:49 > 0:07:54his century. As it turned out, he'd barely started. At the other end,

0:07:54 > 0:07:58some hope, Moeen Ali removing Shaun Marsh. Little did they know it would

0:07:58 > 0:08:02be the only wicket of the day. And his little brother, Mitchell Marsh,

0:08:02 > 0:08:08showed his sibling how it is done. Australia were ruthless. England's

0:08:08 > 0:08:15bowling toothless, flailing to all corners. It was hard to watch.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19Marsh's aggression reaped its rewards. A first test 100, the

0:08:19 > 0:08:24delight of his fans and family. The rungs kept coming, so did

0:08:24 > 0:08:27milestones. Smith completed his double century. The world's number

0:08:27 > 0:08:32one batsman with another masterclass as Australia piled on the mystery.

0:08:32 > 0:08:39Smith still there on two to nine, Marchant 189. On a day when England

0:08:39 > 0:08:45pose Mac -- England's bowling limitations were exposed. We don't

0:08:45 > 0:08:49have the pace and we haven't got perhaps the highest quality of

0:08:49 > 0:08:54magical spin. We have got what we've got and we've had to work

0:08:54 > 0:08:58exceptionally hard to day. England have seen some dark days in this

0:08:58 > 0:09:01series but none quite as grim as this. They will need something very

0:09:01 > 0:09:13special if they are to save this match and save their Ashes hopes. ,

0:09:13 > 0:09:16Mitchell and Marsh had some sympathy for England's bolus, but not too

0:09:16 > 0:09:24much.They are obviously tired. Any time you spend a overs in the dirt,

0:09:24 > 0:09:30it is hard work. You walk off the ground very tired and sore. I am not

0:09:30 > 0:09:34sure we have broken their spirit, but we have put ourselves in a good

0:09:34 > 0:09:39position to win this magic we bat well tomorrow.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41The late game is the big one today.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43Manchester City, 11 points clear at the top of the table

0:09:43 > 0:09:46and on a 15-match winning run, take on Tottenham at the Etihad.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has suggested City can go

0:09:49 > 0:09:51through the season unbeaten, as his side did in

0:09:51 > 0:09:55the early noughties.

0:09:55 > 0:10:03That belongs to Arsene Wenger and his amazing Arsenal in 2004. It is

0:10:03 > 0:10:07important that we try to play better, that is the most important

0:10:07 > 0:10:14thing. The record is always there. One day it is going to be broken.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16But the day's action is already under way.

0:10:16 > 0:10:17Leicester are playing Crystal Palace and it's

0:10:17 > 0:10:20the visitors who have the lead.

0:10:20 > 0:10:25Christian Benteke the scorer after 19 minutes.

0:10:25 > 0:10:34It is approaching half-time.It is now 2-0 two palace. They are

0:10:34 > 0:10:37improving under Roy Hodgson, their new manager. It is Wilfried Zaha who

0:10:37 > 0:10:42has got the second for Crystal Palace.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45Palace can move out of the bottom three with a point today.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47And Graeme Shinnie has given Aberdeen a 1-0 lead

0:10:47 > 0:10:48against Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50With leaders Celtic not playing until tomorrow,

0:10:50 > 0:10:55Aberdeen can narrow the gap to two points with a win this afternoon.

0:10:55 > 0:10:562-0 there to Aberdeen.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58Now, they fund themselves, sort their own food

0:10:58 > 0:11:05and travel to compete and in the Bobsleigh World Cup

0:11:05 > 0:11:07the British team of Mica McNeill and Mica Moore came tenth

0:11:07 > 0:11:10in the latest race in Austria so they're continuing to defy the odds

0:11:10 > 0:11:11since their funding was cut.

0:11:11 > 0:11:17That also gave them fourth place in the European Championships.

0:11:17 > 0:11:22That is all the sport for now. Crystal Palace with that 2-0 lead,

0:11:22 > 0:11:26heading to 14th in the Premier League. Heady days for the Eagles.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30Thank you.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33You can see more on all of today's stories on the BBC News Channel.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35The next news on BBC One is at 5:25.

0:11:35 > 0:11:36Bye for now.

0:11:48 > 0:11:53Hello, I could have put up any number of spheres ban me to try and

0:11:53 > 0:11:56capture the regime across the British Isles at the moment. If you

0:11:56 > 0:12:00have got lying snow, it
