0:00:05 > 0:00:08Six people have died in a multiple car crash in Birmingham.
0:00:08 > 0:00:12Several others have been injured.
0:00:12 > 0:00:19It happened early this morning in an underpass.
0:00:19 > 0:00:25Witnesses described the scene as "horrific."
0:00:25 > 0:00:33I got out of bed, looked out the window and saw loads of people
0:00:33 > 0:00:37running towards where the crash was. The police officers told everyone to
0:00:37 > 0:00:41get back, get back.
0:00:41 > 0:00:43The Government wants 18-year-olds to be automatically enrolled
0:00:43 > 0:00:45into workplace pensions, to help prepare for retirement.
0:00:45 > 0:00:48South Africa's ruling ANC party prepares to elect a new leader.
0:00:48 > 0:00:50And England's Ashes hopes fade, as rain stops play
0:00:50 > 0:00:53in the third test in Perth.
0:01:05 > 0:01:06Good evening.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09Investigators are trying to establish what caused a multiple
0:01:09 > 0:01:12pile-up in an underpass in Birmingham this morning,
0:01:12 > 0:01:19which killed six people and injured several others, some seriously.
0:01:19 > 0:01:21Firefighters who helped remove bodies from the wreckage,
0:01:21 > 0:01:23described the scene as "horrific".
0:01:23 > 0:01:28From Birmingham, our correspondent Phil Mackie reports.
0:01:28 > 0:01:34The immediate aftermath of the crash. Daybreak strewn across four
0:01:34 > 0:01:37lanes. Medics were desperately trying to save lives, but five
0:01:37 > 0:01:50people were already dead, and a sixth was dying. The rest of the
0:01:50 > 0:01:53footage is too graphic to show. In daylight, the scale of what happened
0:01:53 > 0:01:55became clearer. Three of the people who died were in this taxi.
0:01:55 > 0:01:58Astonishingly, the man and the woman in the small car crashed between it
0:01:58 > 0:02:00and the wall walked away with minor injuries. The sound of the crash
0:02:00 > 0:02:03woke many of the people who live nearby.Got out of bed, looked out
0:02:03 > 0:02:05the window and just saw loads of people running towards where the
0:02:05 > 0:02:08crash was. And then the police officers telling everyone to get
0:02:08 > 0:02:13back, get back, so I guess people will try to help people. They pulled
0:02:13 > 0:02:17two people out of the taxi. I didn't realise it was a taxi until today,
0:02:17 > 0:02:22but they will two people out of the taxi, resuscitating them
0:02:22 > 0:02:26straightaway for about 25 minutes. Dated one into the ambulance come I
0:02:26 > 0:02:30didn't see them take the second one away, so I don't know if they didn't
0:02:30 > 0:02:35make it, but it was havoc. The crash happened on a section of the
0:02:35 > 0:02:39Belgrave middleweight, a busy road in the heart of Birmingham. The
0:02:39 > 0:02:42vehicles collided at an entrance to an underpass at the junction of
0:02:42 > 0:02:46Bristol Road. Police say the dual carriageway will probably stay close
0:02:46 > 0:02:50to the rest of the day. Investigators will be looking at a
0:02:50 > 0:02:56number of factors. The road was gritted, but at an hour of close to
0:02:56 > 0:03:01one in the morning when the Borges were closed to freezing, did one of
0:03:01 > 0:03:03the cars cross carriageways? Residents say especially when it is
0:03:03 > 0:03:07late at night and the road is quiet, people will come along here at
0:03:07 > 0:03:12excess speeds. It will take some time to unpick the scene and just
0:03:12 > 0:03:15understand exactly what has happened, and it would be unfair for
0:03:15 > 0:03:20me to speculate at this time. What I can say is that we are looking to
0:03:20 > 0:03:23all sorts of conditions, the road conditions come we are aware of the
0:03:23 > 0:03:28road was gritted 5pm last night but that is just one factor of many we
0:03:28 > 0:03:37need to consider.40 firefighters helped the survivors at what was
0:03:37 > 0:03:41described as a complex scene.It quickly became apparent there could
0:03:41 > 0:03:44not be a lot done to save the lives of some of those patients
0:03:44 > 0:03:49unfortunately. Again, very difficult circumstances, as you have already
0:03:49 > 0:03:53alluded to, very close to Christmas, so our thoughts are with the
0:03:53 > 0:03:58families and friends of those patients involved.There were a
0:03:58 > 0:04:00total of 13 casualties, including six who died, with six vehicles
0:04:00 > 0:04:06damaged. Police described the accident as harrowing.
0:04:06 > 0:04:12Investigations into what caused it likely to take some time. What is
0:04:12 > 0:04:17the latest on the investigation? The specialist teams who have been here
0:04:17 > 0:04:20all day are continuing to carry out their investigations. You can see
0:04:20 > 0:04:24they have brought in extra lights to help them with that. We think in the
0:04:24 > 0:04:29next couple of hours they will be doing that very sensitive and
0:04:29 > 0:04:32difficult operation of removing all of the baby from the scenes so they
0:04:32 > 0:04:35can try and clear this very busy, very important main road in time for
0:04:35 > 0:04:39tomorrow morning was like rush-hour. As we say, at the moment we still
0:04:39 > 0:04:42don't know what caused the accident. There are lots of theories but
0:04:42 > 0:04:45clearly it will take some time to get to the bottom of exactly what
0:04:45 > 0:04:50happened in the early hours of this morning here in central Birmingham.
0:04:50 > 0:04:53Police say that they do know the identities of the six people who
0:04:53 > 0:04:56died, but they are still making contact with all of their families.
0:04:56 > 0:05:02The probability is that a lot of these people are local people, and
0:05:02 > 0:05:05it has certainly had an enormous effect on people in Birmingham
0:05:05 > 0:05:09today, any of whom have been taking the social media to express their
0:05:09 > 0:05:15condolences.Many thanks, Phil.
0:05:15 > 0:05:16Police in Lebanon are investigating the death
0:05:16 > 0:05:19of a British embassy worker.
0:05:19 > 0:05:23The BBC has been told the body of Rebecca Dijks was found on the side
0:05:23 > 0:05:24of a motorway yesterday.
0:05:24 > 0:05:29Our correspondent Jon Donnison is here with more.
0:05:29 > 0:05:39We have spoken to police sources who believe that Rebecca was murdered,
0:05:39 > 0:05:43she had been strangled and sexually assaulted. She worked at the
0:05:43 > 0:05:48embassy, working at the Department for International Development. We
0:05:48 > 0:05:53have had a statement from the Foreign Office here in London saying
0:05:53 > 0:05:56they are blazing closely with the Lebanese authorities, providing
0:05:56 > 0:06:02support to the family. They have already issued a statement from
0:06:02 > 0:06:07Rebecca Dykes's family who say we are devastated by the loss of our
0:06:07 > 0:06:15beloved Rebecca, doing all we can to stand what has happened.Thank you.
0:06:15 > 0:06:16The Government is considering extending automatic enrolment
0:06:16 > 0:06:18into a workplace pension, to 18-year-olds, from 2020.
0:06:18 > 0:06:22Currently the starting age is 22, for anyone earning more
0:06:22 > 0:06:23than £10,000.
0:06:23 > 0:06:25Workers can opt out, but the change could affect
0:06:25 > 0:06:26around 900,000 people.
0:06:26 > 0:06:32Joe Lynam reports.
0:06:32 > 0:06:36Ollie and Nate are both 21. Ollie on the left has not yet started saving
0:06:36 > 0:06:42for his retirement. It is not really crossed my mind yet. I moved jobs
0:06:42 > 0:06:47quite frequently, tend not to stay in one place too long. So pensions
0:06:47 > 0:06:52sought of bin lower down the list of things I have been conscious.Nate,
0:06:52 > 0:06:56though, has been saving for his retirement since since he was 16.I
0:06:56 > 0:07:02grew up with a family on welfare, so I was quite aware of the effect is
0:07:02 > 0:07:08of being reliant on government money can have. And how insecure it can be
0:07:08 > 0:07:12sometimes.If the Work and Pensions Secretary David Gauke has his way,
0:07:12 > 0:07:16young people like Ollie and Nate could soon be automatically enrolled
0:07:16 > 0:07:20for a pension at their employers. That, I think, will get more people
0:07:20 > 0:07:24into the habit of saving. It will mean younger people will be saving
0:07:24 > 0:07:28for those extra years, so that is significant when it comes to their
0:07:28 > 0:07:33retirement.At the moment, only those aged 22 are automatically
0:07:33 > 0:07:37included in a pension scheme by their employers, but the government
0:07:37 > 0:07:42wants that age lowered to 18. Soon, 8% of our salaries will be going
0:07:42 > 0:07:46into a pension pot, something that employers are worried about.I think
0:07:46 > 0:07:49what the government needs to bear in mind however is how much of the cost
0:07:49 > 0:07:54of that is going to be falling on employers in the future, because
0:07:54 > 0:07:59already the cost for employers is on course to travel by 2019. Today's
0:07:59 > 0:08:01announcement means the cost to employers will be even higher than
0:08:01 > 0:08:08that.To 18 or even 21-year-olds, retirement must seem a very long way
0:08:08 > 0:08:12off, especially if they don't earn much, but if this plan proceeds, it
0:08:12 > 0:08:19could help younger people depending on the state in decades to come. Joe
0:08:19 > 0:08:21Lynam, BBC News.
0:08:21 > 0:08:23In South Africa, thousands of delegates from the ruling ANC
0:08:23 > 0:08:25party, are preparing to elect a new leader.
0:08:25 > 0:08:28The vote is expected to be close between the two candidates vying
0:08:28 > 0:08:29to replace President Jacob Zuma.
0:08:29 > 0:08:32His time in office has been marked by deep divisions within the ANC.
0:08:32 > 0:08:39Our Africa Editor, Fergal Keane is in Johannesburg.
0:08:39 > 0:08:44Fergal, what are the chances of the new leader uniting, and even
0:08:44 > 0:08:53reinvigorating the ANC?Well, given the division that has existed in the
0:08:53 > 0:08:56weeks leading up to this Conference and the divisions I have seen myself
0:08:56 > 0:09:10on the Conference floor in the last hour, supporters of Cyril Ramaphosa,
0:09:10 > 0:09:16who say he will clear out corruption, and Nkoszana
0:09:16 > 0:09:20Dlamini-Zuma, the wife of Jacob Zuma, and a significant politician
0:09:20 > 0:09:25in her own right. It is a huge task whoever comes in, first ball in
0:09:25 > 0:09:30trying to unite this party, which has been ridden by infighting and
0:09:30 > 0:09:34factionalism. If they managed to unite the ANC and lead it to
0:09:34 > 0:09:38elections in 2019, there is a huge task to persuade the majority of
0:09:38 > 0:09:43South African voters that the ANC has turned its back on the age of
0:09:43 > 0:09:47corruption, the age of cronyism, of what is called state capture, where
0:09:47 > 0:09:53cronies of President Zuma allegedly in return for kickbacks were given
0:09:53 > 0:09:57chunks of state enterprise, vast sums in tax payers money. It is a
0:09:57 > 0:10:00big job to persuade South Africans and I spent a bit of time in the
0:10:00 > 0:10:03last week going round townships and informal settlements there,
0:10:03 > 0:10:07listening to people, and that is their major concern. That will
0:10:07 > 0:10:11define I think whether the ANC continues to be the dominant force
0:10:11 > 0:10:16in this country. We should know by around 45 o'clock in the morning,
0:10:16 > 0:10:21just as the dawn comes up here in Johannesburg.Fergal Kean, live in
0:10:21 > 0:10:23Johannesburg.
0:10:23 > 0:10:25A suicide bomb attack on a packed Methodist church
0:10:25 > 0:10:28in south western Pakistan, has killed at least nine people
0:10:28 > 0:10:29and wounded more than 50 others.
0:10:29 > 0:10:32CCTV images caught the moment one of two bombers tried
0:10:32 > 0:10:34to enter the building, in the city of Quetta.
0:10:34 > 0:10:37One man was shot dead by police, the other detonated his device.
0:10:37 > 0:10:47So-called Islamic State have claimed responsibility.
0:10:48 > 0:10:51Police in Australia have charged a man they suspect of acting as an
0:10:51 > 0:10:56economic agent to North Korea. Chan Hahn Choi has been charged with
0:10:56 > 0:11:00brokering illegal exports and discussing the supply of weapons of
0:11:00 > 0:11:03mass the traction.
0:11:03 > 0:11:11Football now, and viewers in Scotland need to look away now,
0:11:11 > 0:11:14because Sportscene is coming up at five past six on BBC Two.
0:11:14 > 0:11:15Celtic's 69-game unbeaten domestic run has ended
0:11:15 > 0:11:18after they were thrashed 4-0 by Hearts in the
0:11:18 > 0:11:21Scottish Premiership.
0:11:21 > 0:11:2316-year-old Harry Cochrane opened the scoring at Tynecastle,
0:11:23 > 0:11:29his first goal in professional football.
0:11:29 > 0:11:32England's battle to save the Ashes will go into the final day
0:11:32 > 0:11:35of the third cricket Test in Perth, after rain interrupted play.
0:11:35 > 0:11:37But needing at least a draw to save the series,
0:11:37 > 0:11:40England are still 127 runs short of Australia's first innings total,
0:11:40 > 0:11:41with four wickets down.
0:11:41 > 0:11:47Andy Swiss reports.
0:11:47 > 0:11:51A day when English cricket was rescued by some very English
0:11:51 > 0:11:56weather, but for how long? It had started out a damage limitation
0:11:56 > 0:12:00exercise to restrict Australia's gargantuan total. The video umpire
0:12:00 > 0:12:07helped, finally dislodged -- dislodging Steve Smith. But some
0:12:07 > 0:12:12hefty lower order hitting took Australia's total way out of sight.
0:12:12 > 0:12:18For England's batsmen, it was now all about survival. Bode. Josh
0:12:18 > 0:12:20Hazlewood's brilliance did for Alastair Cook and worse was to
0:12:20 > 0:12:25follow. Joe Root, the captain, remember, what was he thinking? But
0:12:25 > 0:12:30as his team-mates fell around him, James Vince stood tall, a fluent 50
0:12:30 > 0:12:34starting a recovery until the ball of this, or perhaps any summer,
0:12:34 > 0:12:38Mitchell Starc, the stumped destroyer, just watched this zigzag
0:12:38 > 0:12:44of the pitch at 90 mph. Unplayable. Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow
0:12:44 > 0:12:48helped calm the nerves with an unbeaten partnership, until a deluge
0:12:48 > 0:12:51sparked delight among the Barmy Army. But their team need something
0:12:51 > 0:12:56very special. More rain is forecast but only that and some determined
0:12:56 > 0:13:01batting can save England's hopes. Andy Swiss, BBC News, Perth.
0:13:01 > 0:13:04Tonight the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year will be
0:13:04 > 0:13:05announced in Liverpool.
0:13:05 > 0:13:0712 are on the short list, with the public choosing the winner.
0:13:07 > 0:13:16Our Sports Correspondent Joe Wilson is in Liverpool for us tonight...
0:13:17 > 0:13:20This is the evening wear sports coverage meets entertainment, even
0:13:20 > 0:13:25celebrity. Some of the nominees are making their way towards the
0:13:25 > 0:13:29auditorium, Adam Peaty, Jonnie Peacock amongst them stopping to do
0:13:29 > 0:13:33interviews. There is a good buzz here, just don't mention the Ashes.
0:13:33 > 0:13:38This is the award that doesn't come from a specific sporting achievement
0:13:38 > 0:13:41but the reward the sportsperson who has most capture the public
0:13:41 > 0:13:48imagination.It ain't Aintree, Anfield or Goodison, the Echo Arena
0:13:48 > 0:13:56tonight. Immerse yourself here in voices and memories. 2017 has seen
0:13:56 > 0:13:59media coverage of an expanding diversity of sport, stories of
0:13:59 > 0:14:03governance and ethics as well as goals and wickets. This evening will
0:14:03 > 0:14:08be guided through achievements from grassroots to the top. There are
0:14:08 > 0:14:1211,000 seats here, but voters at home will decide. At least Andy
0:14:12 > 0:14:16Murray had a less successful year, so someone else can have a chance to
0:14:16 > 0:14:21win. The list of nominees offer something for everyone. The speed
0:14:21 > 0:14:27skater, the runner, the cyclist, the F1 champion, the heavyweight boxer,
0:14:27 > 0:14:30the football goal-scorer, the Wimbledon semifinalist, the Paris
0:14:30 > 0:14:35printer, the star swimmer, the Superbike, and the cricketer and the
0:14:35 > 0:14:40tae kwon do fighter. There will be spare salt memory of Bradley Larry
0:14:40 > 0:14:44tonight, his parents will collect an award. His six years were filled
0:14:44 > 0:14:48with connection to football. The point of sport is to provoke every
0:14:48 > 0:14:56emotion. Tonight's programme is likely to touch most of them.
0:14:56 > 0:14:57Prince Harry has interviewed Barack Obama,
0:14:57 > 0:15:01for BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
0:15:01 > 0:15:06If you start taking long pauses between the answers, you will
0:15:06 > 0:15:12probably start to get the face.Let me see the face.
0:15:12 > 0:15:13It's part of Harry's guest
0:15:13 > 0:15:16editorship of the programme, and features the former US president
