0:05:07 > 0:05:12at the scene for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15This is quite a complex site, and we've had to put certain cordons

0:05:15 > 0:05:18in place for people's safety, because the building has been

0:05:18 > 0:05:24so seriously damaged.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26Vets at the zoo confirmed that a nine-year-old aardvark called

0:05:57 > 0:05:59That must be disappointing.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05We are very disappointed, we came from a long way,

0:06:05 > 0:06:07from Brazil, to see it.

0:06:07 > 0:06:08And it's closed.

0:06:08 > 0:06:09And sad.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12Poor animals.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Some of the staff who live on site here were called to the scene

0:06:15 > 0:06:18immediately and started moving the animals to safety.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20Today, the zoo has been closed.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22It would normally have been a very busy day,

0:06:44 > 0:06:46for heavy goods lorries.

0:06:46 > 0:06:47Drivers would be charged per mile,

0:06:47 > 0:06:49in a move that replaced some existing taxes.

0:06:49 > 0:06:55There are no plans for a similar system for private cars.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57California's deadly wildfire has now become the largest

0:06:57 > 0:07:00in the state's recorded history.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03The blaze which has been burning for more than two weeks has scorched

0:07:03 > 0:07:08an area greater than New York City, Brussels and Paris combined.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10Among those tackling the flames are thousands of prisoners,

0:07:10 > 0:07:13some of whom have been given a new sense of purpose by the work,

0:07:13 > 0:07:19as our correspondent James Cook reports.

0:07:19 > 0:07:20It's pretty challenging.

0:07:20 > 0:07:25Sometimes we're right there, right next to the fire.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28Compared to being in prison and being here, it's

0:07:28 > 0:07:29completely different.

0:07:29 > 0:07:31Here you feel free.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34You're out in the world.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37The biggest change for me is mental, because I've never pushed myself

0:07:37 > 0:07:45as hard, ever in life.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48California has 4,000 inmate firefighters, men and women.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51Cutting firebreaks is risky work, two have died this year.

0:07:51 > 0:08:01But there are rewards too in reduced sentences and a sense of purpose.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05After being in this programme, I feel like I've been rehabilitated

0:08:05 > 0:08:08and I feel like I can go out there and achieve anything

0:08:08 > 0:08:10I want to because I've done this.

0:08:10 > 0:08:17This is so hard.

0:08:17 > 0:08:19We were allowed inside this prison camp in Malibu.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21There are no walls or fences here.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23Violent or volatile prisoners are not allowed

0:08:23 > 0:08:26to join the programme.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30With a job like this, there is only time to think about the work.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32Latoya Najar is serving four years for causing the death

0:08:32 > 0:08:37of her seven-year-old son in a drunken car crash.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39The attraction for me was because of my crime,

0:08:39 > 0:08:44I could come out here and do something positive.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46It's challenging mentally to get over something.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50I'm never going to get over it, but to try to ease my mind

0:08:50 > 0:08:54and this has helped.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56With California facing more frequent and more destructive fires,

0:08:56 > 0:09:00some critics call this slave labour.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03But the project is voluntary, it may reduce re-offending and it

0:09:03 > 0:09:07provides some measure of redemption.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10Everyone is like, "We love you firefighters."

0:09:10 > 0:09:14We all wave back and we wave to the kids.

0:09:14 > 0:09:20It's amazing, yes.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22The work may be exhausting, it may be dangerous,

0:09:22 > 0:09:25but in the words of one prisoner, "It's better than twiddling

0:09:25 > 0:09:26your thumbs in jail."

0:09:26 > 0:09:30James Cook, BBC News, in Southern California.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35The charity Crisis at Christmas opened its centres to four

0:09:35 > 0:09:38and a half thousand homeless people today.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41Crisis is warning that that the number of what it describes

0:09:41 > 0:09:44as 'hidden rough sleepers' could increase by almost 50 per cent

0:09:44 > 0:09:45over the next decade.

0:09:45 > 0:09:55Our correspondent Anisa Kadri went to meet some of those seeking help.

0:09:56 > 0:10:00I would like to get my hat fixed if possible.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03It may look like like a trip to the tailors, but this is a free

0:10:03 > 0:10:06service for homeless people who need to get clothing and

0:10:06 > 0:10:07accessories fixed.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09And it is part of Crisis at Christmas, offering

0:10:09 > 0:10:11people without a home, warmth, company and support

0:10:11 > 0:10:12over the festive period.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16I have been sleeping rough and then a Crisis guy got me into a night

0:10:16 > 0:10:18shelter and the shelters are very good, but it is more

0:10:18 > 0:10:22Christmassy here.

0:10:22 > 0:10:27It is a bigger wide open space, there is more movement,

0:10:27 > 0:10:29there are more people and you have a bigger choice

0:10:29 > 0:10:30of people to associate with.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33All day, volunteers have been here providing hot food and hot

0:10:33 > 0:10:35drinks to the people who have been coming to this centre

0:10:35 > 0:10:37for Crisis at Christmas.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40And over the next few days, the charity expects more than 4000

0:10:40 > 0:10:42people to walk through its doors at centres like this

0:10:42 > 0:10:44around the country.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48It is a chance for staff to meet people who have been sleeping rough

0:10:48 > 0:10:52and give them support over Christmas.

0:10:52 > 0:10:5411,000 volunteers are taking part over the next few

0:10:54 > 0:10:59days as Crisis warns of a growing homelessness problem.

0:10:59 > 0:11:06I volunteer because I don't celebrate Christmas myself,

0:11:06 > 0:11:09so it's nice to do something on a day when I wouldn't

0:11:09 > 0:11:10be that busy anyway

0:11:10 > 0:11:11and volunteering with Crisis.

0:11:11 > 0:11:15It is a lot of fun and it feels like I'm helping a lot of people.

0:11:15 > 0:11:16I think the best of the volunteers.

0:11:16 > 0:11:19I think they are doing a great job, beautiful job, brilliant job,

0:11:19 > 0:11:22thanks to them, there are nice people around me, I'm very happy.

0:11:22 > 0:11:26As long as I am not on the street, I've got a roof, I've got nice food,

0:11:26 > 0:11:29have got a nice dinner, but it is not all about food

0:11:29 > 0:11:33and sleep, you know.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36It is all about the chance to be myself and I hope that this

0:11:36 > 0:11:40is going to be my last year and that next year will be better.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43But for now it is just about making life a little bit easier
