0:00:04 > 0:00:07Crisis talks in the US, as politicians try to break

0:00:07 > 0:00:11the deadlock that's shut down the American government.

0:00:11 > 0:00:13It comes as tens of thousands hold protests, marking a year

0:00:13 > 0:00:16after the first women's march, held in opposition to

0:00:16 > 0:00:20President Trump's inauguration.

0:00:20 > 0:00:21Gunmen storm one of the highest-profile hotels

0:00:21 > 0:00:23in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

0:00:23 > 0:00:27Two of the attackers are reported killed.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30Mary Lou McDonald is confirmed as the only candidate nominated

0:00:30 > 0:00:34to replace Gerry Adams as Sinn Fein President.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38And in rugby, defending champions Saracens thrash Northampton

0:00:38 > 0:00:40to keep their hopes alive of qualifying for the European

0:00:40 > 0:00:47Champions Cup quarterfinals.

0:01:03 > 0:01:04Good evening.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07The US national government has officially shut down,

0:01:07 > 0:01:10a year to the day since Donald Trump took office as President.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13Senators failed to agree a stop-gap budget amid a bitter row between

0:01:13 > 0:01:15President Trump's Republicans and the opposition Democrats over

0:01:15 > 0:01:18immigration and border security.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21Senators are tonight trying to to broker a deal to get the US

0:01:21 > 0:01:22government running again.

0:01:22 > 0:01:26It comes as thousands of women joined marches across the country

0:01:26 > 0:01:29to mark the first anniversary of President Trump's inauguration.

0:01:29 > 0:01:33David Willis reports from Washington.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37Marking the first anniversary of President Trump's inauguration,

0:01:37 > 0:01:40protesters took to the streets here in Washington

0:01:40 > 0:01:43and across the country, as the government of the largest

0:01:43 > 0:01:51economy in the world went into shutdown.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53Yays are 50, and the nays are 49.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56Last night, a stopgap funding measure came up ten votes short.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59That after the Democrat leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer,

0:01:59 > 0:02:03met with President Trump at the White House.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05Progress was made, he said, before the deal-maker

0:02:05 > 0:02:07in chief changed his mind.

0:02:07 > 0:02:12Negotiating with this White House is like negotiating with Jell-o.

0:02:12 > 0:02:19It's next to impossible.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22As soon as you take one step forward, the hard-right forces

0:02:22 > 0:02:30the President three steps back.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32The White House branded the Democrat "obstructionist losers".

0:02:32 > 0:02:35What we've just witnessed on the floor was a cynical decision

0:02:35 > 0:02:38decision by Senate Democrats

0:02:38 > 0:02:44To shove aside millions of Americans for the sake of a responsible

0:02:44 > 0:02:50political game. The government shutdown was 100% avoidable.As the

0:02:50 > 0:02:54vote collapsed, outside on the streets of the capital were the

0:02:54 > 0:02:59people whose fate Democrats wanted to tie to this funding agreement -

0:02:59 > 0:03:02young people brought into the United States illegally, whom President

0:03:02 > 0:03:06Trump is threatening to deport. Republicans want their fate linked

0:03:06 > 0:03:12to funding for the wall along the Mexican border, a pet project for

0:03:12 > 0:03:16President Trump. Members of Congress are working over the weekend to try

0:03:16 > 0:03:20to find a solution for the crisis. Hundreds of thousands of

0:03:20 > 0:03:23nonessential government workers will be placed on temporary and paid

0:03:23 > 0:03:28leave. And not even members of the military will be paid until a

0:03:28 > 0:03:32breakthrough is reached -- on paid leave. President Trump took issue

0:03:32 > 0:03:35with that today, tweeting that Democrats are holding the military

0:03:35 > 0:03:39hostage over their desire to have unchecked illegal immigration,

0:03:39 > 0:03:48cannot let that happen. The last government shutdown

0:03:48 > 0:03:50government shutdown here, in 2013, caused the closure of national parks

0:03:50 > 0:03:52and led to around 800,000 government workers being placed on leave.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56Nobody here wants to see history repeat itself. A year ago, the

0:03:56 > 0:04:02president was celebrating sweeping the power on the platform as the

0:04:02 > 0:04:06ultimate deal-maker. He starts his second year with the government in

0:04:06 > 0:04:13shutdown and his approval ratings at an low. -- at an all-time low. We

0:04:13 > 0:04:15will have more from David shortly.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17Pennsylvania was one of the key states in delivering

0:04:17 > 0:04:18President Trump his victory.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20He inspired hope among many working-class voters

0:04:20 > 0:04:23in places like Bethlehem - a former steel town that hadn't

0:04:23 > 0:04:25voted for a Republican for President since the 1980s.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27The BBC's Nick Bryant went there to see how people

0:04:27 > 0:04:29rate his performance one year on.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32It was rust-belt towns that helped put Donald Trump in the White House.

0:04:32 > 0:04:33One-time steel powerhouses such as Bethlehem, Pennsylvania,

0:04:33 > 0:04:36which hadn't gone Republican since the 1980s.

0:04:36 > 0:04:42Democratic strongholds that became Trump country.

0:04:42 > 0:04:43So, all this is new?

0:04:43 > 0:04:45All this is new, all this is new.

0:04:45 > 0:04:47Keith Hornet runs his own construction firm,

0:04:47 > 0:04:50and has built 300 new apartments since Donald Trump became President.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53He knows there's been a rise in business and consumer confidence.

0:04:53 > 0:04:57It's seen him double his workforce.

0:04:57 > 0:05:01As long as I see builders happy, shovels going in the ground

0:05:01 > 0:05:05and there is work ahead of me, I'm happy.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07You're seeing a Trump bump?

0:05:07 > 0:05:08Absolutely.

0:05:08 > 0:05:09100%.

0:05:09 > 0:05:10No doubt in my mind.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13This is a direct result.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16He might turn out to be one of the greatest

0:05:16 > 0:05:18Presidents we ever had.

0:05:18 > 0:05:19George Ambrosio runs a barbers shop, but keeps a close eye

0:05:19 > 0:05:22on the stock market, which has reached record highs

0:05:22 > 0:05:26and has risen about 30% since this time last year.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28A registered Democrat, he is proud to have voted

0:05:28 > 0:05:30for the billionaire.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32He's getting all of the politicians shook up.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34No business as usual.

0:05:34 > 0:05:39And I like what he's doing.

0:05:39 > 0:05:40What about his behaviour?

0:05:40 > 0:05:41Well, you know...

0:05:41 > 0:05:43What are you going to do?

0:05:43 > 0:05:45I mean, you don't like his tweeting, nobody likes his tweeting.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49But in my mind, for my customers and everybody else, it's

0:05:49 > 0:05:53what everybody's thinking but won't say.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55But there are people in Bethlehem who regard

0:05:55 > 0:05:57Donald Trump not as a messiah, but a pariah.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01Pensioner Julie Rae is worried about the new President's temperament.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05It's a common complaint from Republicans as well as Democrats.

0:06:05 > 0:06:10I don't think he has a real grasp on any kind of reality, in a way.

0:06:10 > 0:06:15You know, in a theatrical reality, yes, he's great.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18But as far as leading our country, I think he has no

0:06:18 > 0:06:22clue what he's doing.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26And I don't think he realises the seriousness of it.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29People in these communities aren't consumed by the fire and fury gossip

0:06:29 > 0:06:31coming from the White House.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35They are not following every twist and every tweet.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39Many judge this presidency with an economic yardstick, and,

0:06:39 > 0:06:45financially, many feel better off than they did this time last year.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48For all the chaos and controversy in Washington, there's a sense

0:06:48 > 0:06:51of resurgence in the rust belt.

0:06:51 > 0:06:58Nick Bryant, BBC News, Pennsylvania.

0:06:58 > 0:07:05Let's pick-up some points with David Willetts now. Despite Nick's report,

0:07:05 > 0:07:09with the protests and the shutdown of government, this is, it's fair to

0:07:09 > 0:07:14say, not the kind of weekend the president would have liked to have

0:07:14 > 0:07:18had one year on from his inauguration?Not exactly, I think

0:07:18 > 0:07:22that's there to say. The president was due to be guest of honour at a

0:07:22 > 0:07:25fundraising dinner to mark the one-year anniversary of his

0:07:25 > 0:07:31inauguration at his posh Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago. Instead, he is

0:07:31 > 0:07:35here in Washington, feuding with opposition Democrats. And if

0:07:35 > 0:07:40anything, his stance seems to have hardened over the last 24 hours. The

0:07:40 > 0:07:45White House is saying point-blank that there will be no negotiation on

0:07:45 > 0:07:50immigration, the so-called dreamers issue, until Democrats help to solve

0:07:50 > 0:07:54the impasse as far as the shutdown is concerned. The Democrats say that

0:07:54 > 0:07:59you just can't debate with this man coming he keeps changing his mind.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03Meanwhile, the iconic Statue of Liberty has been closed, and

0:08:03 > 0:08:07training for military recruits is being put on hold. Many are

0:08:07 > 0:08:11wondering whatever happened to the President who gave the world the art

0:08:11 > 0:08:13of the deal, Kate.David, thank you.

0:08:13 > 0:08:15In Afghanistan, gunmen have stormed one of the most popular

0:08:15 > 0:08:17international hotels in the capital, Kabul, opening fire

0:08:17 > 0:08:20on staff and guests. At least four men are said to have

0:08:20 > 0:08:22carried out the attack on the Intercontinental hotel.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25Two of them are reported to have been shot dead

0:08:25 > 0:08:26by Afghan special forces.

0:08:26 > 0:08:31Several civilian casualties have been taken to hospital.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35Our correspondent Zia Shahreyar is in Kabul now.

0:08:35 > 0:08:43What updates do you have for us, Zia?

0:08:45 > 0:08:50Several hours after the attack started, it's still going on,

0:08:50 > 0:08:57according to officials. Two attackers are still resisting inside

0:08:57 > 0:09:02the hotel Intercontinental, a very high profile hotel in Kabul. And

0:09:02 > 0:09:07five people have been injured, according to officials. But there

0:09:07 > 0:09:14are also unconfirmed reports of many people who have died in this attack.

0:09:14 > 0:09:15And

0:09:15 > 0:09:18And also, the Afghan security forces, special forces, have been

0:09:18 > 0:09:25deployed to the area. And also the Nato forces are set to be in the

0:09:25 > 0:09:31area, helping the Afghan security forces. The hotel was also attacked

0:09:31 > 0:09:38several years ago. And the responsibility was taken by the

0:09:38 > 0:09:42Taliban. No group has taken responsibility so far for this

0:09:42 > 0:09:50current attack. And the security forces are engaging to clear

0:09:50 > 0:09:55different floors of the hotel. And it's also said that the kitchen of

0:09:55 > 0:10:01the hotel is burning and has been set on fire. So we will have to wait

0:10:01 > 0:10:08a few hours to see what probably the casualties, the real casualties of

0:10:08 > 0:10:11the attack, and who is taking responsibility for the attack.Thank

0:10:11 > 0:10:14you, Zia.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Sinn Fein has announced who'll succeed Gerry Adams

0:10:16 > 0:10:17as its Party President.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19Mary Lou McDonald, who's a Member of Parliament in the Irish Republic,

0:10:19 > 0:10:21was the only candidate for the role.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23The two come from very different backgrounds,

0:10:23 > 0:10:25as our Ireland Correspondent, Chris Page, reports.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28Many would say Gerry Adams has been handing over

0:10:28 > 0:10:31to Mary Lou McDonald for some time.

0:10:31 > 0:10:35And today, Sinn Fein confirmed she would be the new leader

0:10:35 > 0:10:40of Irish Republicanism.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43Please welcome the President-Elect of our party, Mary Lou McDonald.

0:10:43 > 0:10:47She indicated she'd put her own stamp on the job.

0:10:47 > 0:10:55I won't fill Gerry's shoes.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00But the news is that I brought my own, and we together

0:11:00 > 0:11:03will walk a journey which marks a defining Epoque, a defining

0:11:03 > 0:11:06chapter in our achievement of a united Ireland.

0:11:06 > 0:11:13Her own political journey has been very different to her predecessor.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16Gerry Adams came from a working-class area of west Belfast,

0:11:16 > 0:11:22the crucible of the conflict in Northern Ireland.

0:11:22 > 0:11:26Security sources believe he was a senior IRA member,

0:11:26 > 0:11:28though Mr Adams has always denied being in the organisation.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31Mary Lou McDonald was brought up in a

0:11:31 > 0:11:33middle-class suburb of Dublin.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36She joined Sinn Fein during the peace

0:11:36 > 0:11:38process, just as the party was starting to score electoral

0:11:38 > 0:11:41success in the Irish Republic.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44She's become a robust parliamentary adversary

0:11:44 > 0:11:48of the Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar.

0:11:48 > 0:11:56Sinn Fein's opponents still focus on the party's links to

0:11:56 > 0:11:59the IRA, and Sinn Fein is continuing to defend the IRA campaign, but it

0:11:59 > 0:12:02prefers to talk about the present rather than the past.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04As well as being the second-biggest party here

0:12:04 > 0:12:07in Northern Ireland, it is also now the third-largest in the Republic.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09The first challenge for Mary Lou McDonald will be

0:12:09 > 0:12:12negotiations to restore power-sharing

0:12:12 > 0:12:14with Unionists at Stormont.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17But in the coming years, she'll be talking a lot about

0:12:17 > 0:12:19Brexit, which Republicans believe has changed the picture and renewed

0:12:19 > 0:12:21the debate about Irish unity.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24Chris Page, BBC News, Belfast.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27Six women from the British Army have become the largest all-female group

0:12:27 > 0:12:29to ski coast-to-coast across Antarctica.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32The Ice Maiden Team began the 1,000-mile expedition

0:12:32 > 0:12:34on November the 20th.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36They've been battling winds of up to 60 mph

0:12:36 > 0:12:44and temperatures as low as -40.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50Tough stuff.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52With all the sport, here's Lizzie Greenwood Hughes

0:12:52 > 0:12:53at the BBC Sport Centre.

0:12:53 > 0:12:54Thanks very much.

0:12:54 > 0:12:55Good evening.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57It's been a busy day of football.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59Match of the Day and Scottish Cup highlights

0:12:59 > 0:13:00are on BBC One later tonight.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03So, if you don't want to know the scores, you know what to do...

0:13:03 > 0:13:05Manchester City bounced back from their first defeat

0:13:05 > 0:13:08of the season with a 3-1 home victory over Newcastle United.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10The runaway Premier League leaders are still 12 points clear

0:13:10 > 0:13:12at the top of the table.

0:13:12 > 0:13:13Sergio Aguero scoring a hat-trick.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15Elsewhere, there wins for Arsenal, champions Chelsea,

0:13:15 > 0:13:17Manchester United, Leicester and Stoke, who were playing under

0:13:17 > 0:13:23new manager Paul Lambert for the first time.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25In the Scottish Cup, Aberdeen eased into the fifth

0:13:25 > 0:13:29round with a 4-1 win over Championship side St Mirren.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31Gary Mackay-Steven with the goal of the game to seal their place

0:13:31 > 0:13:32in the last 16 draw.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34Amongst the other teams through are the Highland League side

0:13:34 > 0:13:41Brora Rangers and Cup holders Celtic.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45Alexis Sanchez will move to Manchester United after their

0:13:45 > 0:13:48player, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, agreed to go to Arsenal in return.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50The quarterfinal line-up for rugby union's European Champions Cup

0:13:50 > 0:13:52is still undecided, as teams continue to jostle

0:13:52 > 0:13:54for places on the last weekend of qualification.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56Holders Saracens gave themselves a late life-line by beating

0:13:56 > 0:13:59Northampton at the expense of Ospreys, which means the only

0:13:59 > 0:14:00Welsh team through are Scarlets.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03They topped their pool with a narrow win over Toulon,

0:14:03 > 0:14:04leaving Bath in the cold.

0:14:04 > 0:14:11Ade Adedoyen rounds up the action for us.

0:14:11 > 0:14:15For the fans, the final round of pool matches in the European

0:14:15 > 0:14:19Champions Cup is something of a mathematical maze, but a whole host

0:14:19 > 0:14:22of permit Asians and possible outcomes for their team. For the

0:14:22 > 0:14:27defending champions, Saracens, -- permutations. They hope other

0:14:27 > 0:14:32results go their way. But it was the visitors who opened the scoring.

0:14:32 > 0:14:37Saracens, desperate to preserve their dream of winning a third

0:14:37 > 0:14:39successive European title, quickly took control of the match, running

0:14:39 > 0:14:43in five tries in the first half to pretty much wrapped things up before

0:14:43 > 0:14:46the interval. Richard Wigglesworth securing the bonus point. The second

0:14:46 > 0:14:50half was more of the same, with two Moore tries to compete an emphatic

0:14:50 > 0:14:56win. -- two more tries to complete an emphatic win. They are in a

0:14:56 > 0:15:00strong position to qualify as one of the best runners-up. Scarlets are

0:15:00 > 0:15:03guaranteed a place in the quarterfinals. They had to win

0:15:03 > 0:15:07against Toulon, and did, but only narrowly, after taking a convincing

0:15:07 > 0:15:10lead and the players had to give everything to resist a fightback

0:15:10 > 0:15:12from the French side.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14World number one Simona Halep survived an epic battle

0:15:14 > 0:15:17at the Australian Open tennis to reach the fourth round.

0:15:17 > 0:15:18But former champion Maria Sharpova is out.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21In the men's draw, there was no trouble for top seed and defending

0:15:21 > 0:15:24champion Roger Federer - who, at 36, looked as good as ever

0:15:24 > 0:15:27on his way to beating Richard Gasguet in straight sets.

0:15:27 > 0:15:28Novak Djokovic is also through.

0:15:28 > 0:15:36Britain's Kyle Edmund is action overnight.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39Going for his first ever grand slam quarterfinal.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41Now, it's just a few weeks until the Winter Olympics

0:15:41 > 0:15:42begin in PyeongChang.
