0:00:57 > 0:00:59Gunfire and explosions, as Afghan special forces
0:00:59 > 0:01:03battled to regain control of the Intercontinental Hotel.
0:01:03 > 0:01:05One soldier throws a grenade.
0:01:05 > 0:01:06He moves away.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09Then the explosion.
0:01:13 > 0:01:16The room is soon on fire - evidence of the struggle
0:01:16 > 0:01:19that had taken place.
0:01:19 > 0:01:21The Afghan national flag waving from the roof -
0:01:21 > 0:01:25proof that the building has been retaken.
0:01:25 > 0:01:29More than 150 people, including some foreigners,
0:01:29 > 0:01:31were inside yesterday evening, when gunmen burst
0:01:31 > 0:01:35in and opened fire.
0:01:35 > 0:01:38There were old people and children inside the hotel's rooms,
0:01:38 > 0:01:41and the attackers were knocking on the door of each room,
0:01:41 > 0:01:43trying to reach their targets.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46They killed ordinary people and officials.
0:01:46 > 0:01:52They were also targeting foreigners.
0:01:52 > 0:01:55These images, filmed by local TV, show people escaping by climbing
0:01:55 > 0:01:58down bed sheets that they'd tied to balconies.
0:01:58 > 0:02:02This telecoms engineer fell from the sixth floor
0:02:02 > 0:02:08as he tried to get away.
0:02:08 > 0:02:10TRANSLATION:When the sixth floor caught fire this morning,
0:02:10 > 0:02:13my roommate told me, "Either escape or burn."
0:02:13 > 0:02:19I got a bed sheet and tied it on to the balcony.
0:02:19 > 0:02:22I tried to come down, but I was heavy and my arms
0:02:22 > 0:02:23were not strong enough.
0:02:23 > 0:02:29I fell, and injured my shoulder and leg.
0:02:35 > 0:02:40The Afghan security forces were deployed to the area, and place
0:02:40 > 0:02:48themselves on different -- the gunmen place themselves on different
0:02:48 > 0:02:54floors of the hotel and opened fire on the guests. Six people, including
0:02:54 > 0:02:59one foreign citizen, were killed in this attack. Now the Interior
0:02:59 > 0:03:03Ministry assessment team is inside the hotel, trying to find out and
0:03:03 > 0:03:07clear all the different floors of the hotel.
0:03:07 > 0:03:09The hotel is one of Kabul's best-known landmarks.
0:03:09 > 0:03:12It has high levels of security because it's used by politicians
0:03:12 > 0:03:13and foreign visitors.
0:03:13 > 0:03:15It was last attacked by the Taliban seven years ago.
0:03:15 > 0:03:18This sustained and complex assault will prompt urgent questions
0:03:18 > 0:03:20as to how the gunmen got through.
0:03:21 > 0:03:24Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in cities
0:03:24 > 0:03:26across America for the second Women's March, with many
0:03:26 > 0:03:29protesting against President Trump's presidency.
0:03:29 > 0:03:32The main march will be held in Las Vegas later on today.
0:03:32 > 0:03:40A rally is also taking place in London, as Simon Jones reports.
0:03:44 > 0:03:51What time is it?"Time's up". Hundreds gathered outside Downing
0:03:51 > 0:03:56Street determined to make their voices heard. The message, time's up
0:03:56 > 0:04:03for the sexual harassment and abuse of women. It's time to speak out
0:04:03 > 0:04:07against violence against all women across the world. We are still
0:04:07 > 0:04:12getting paid way more than women, and it's completely unfair.Today's
0:04:12 > 0:04:16noisy events are taking place a year to the day that tens of thousands of
0:04:16 > 0:04:21women took to the streets to protest against President Trump's first day
0:04:21 > 0:04:27in office. A lot here say a lot has changed over the past 12 months, but
0:04:27 > 0:04:34there's still a lot to do. The Trump presidency is very much the focus of
0:04:34 > 0:04:38marches that have already been held in the US. Many repeated the
0:04:38 > 0:04:47slogan," build bridges, not wars". I'm glad that the momentum has been
0:04:47 > 0:04:51kept up and women's voices are being heard.I want to resist the racism
0:04:51 > 0:04:56that is happening in our country, especially with the
0:04:56 > 0:05:00commander-in-chief.Although the crowds in London are predominately
0:05:00 > 0:05:04women, the organisers say men are also welcome. They say they are not
0:05:04 > 0:05:08setting out to demonise the entire male population, but are looking for
0:05:08 > 0:05:12everyone to play their part in bringing about change.
0:05:12 > 0:05:15The Ukip leader, Henry Bolton, has insisted he will not quit his job.
0:05:15 > 0:05:17Mr Bolton says it's not right for the party's ruling body
0:05:17 > 0:05:19to judge him on his personal life.
0:05:19 > 0:05:22He's expected to face a vote of no confidence at an emergency
0:05:22 > 0:05:24meeting later today, after offensive texts,
0:05:24 > 0:05:30sent by his former girlfriend, emerged last week.
0:05:30 > 0:05:33A man has been arrested after an eight-year-old girl
0:05:33 > 0:05:35was stabbbed to death in the West Midlands.
0:05:35 > 0:05:37Police say they're treating it as a domestic incident,
0:05:37 > 0:05:40and aren't looking for anyone else.
0:05:40 > 0:05:47Liz Copper is in Walsall for us this lunchtime.
0:05:47 > 0:05:54What are the police saying, Liz? Police say they were called to this
0:05:54 > 0:05:59bungalow around 9:15pm yesterday. When they arrived they found that
0:05:59 > 0:06:04eight-year-old girl with serious injuries. She was taken to hospital,
0:06:04 > 0:06:08unfortunately nothing could be done to save her life and she died a
0:06:08 > 0:06:15short time later. A 54-year-old man was also taken to hospital. He has a
0:06:15 > 0:06:20stab injury to his stomach. His condition is described as stable.
0:06:20 > 0:06:24Police say they will be questioning him in due course. West Midlands
0:06:24 > 0:06:32Police have said they are treating this
0:06:38 > 0:06:41as a domestic incident, and as such they are not looking for anyone else
0:06:41 > 0:06:45in connection with the little girl's death.Lives, thank you.
0:06:45 > 0:06:47Two climbers have been airlifted to safety in the highlands
0:06:47 > 0:06:48after becoming stuck on a ridge.
0:06:48 > 0:06:51The pair were winched to safety from 3,000 feet up
0:06:51 > 0:06:52the mountain in Glencoe.
0:06:52 > 0:06:54They'd first raised the alarm on Friday,
0:06:54 > 0:06:56but the poor weather meant they couldn't be rescued
0:06:56 > 0:06:57until yesterday morning.
0:06:57 > 0:06:59People with hidden disabilities in England could soon be entitled
0:06:59 > 0:07:01to blue badge parking permits under government plans.
0:07:01 > 0:07:04The Department for Transport said the change would make it easier
0:07:04 > 0:07:06for those with conditions such as autism to access
0:07:06 > 0:07:08services they need.
0:07:08 > 0:07:10Helena Lee has the story.
0:07:10 > 0:07:14The Blue Badge scheme was first introduced in England in the 1970s.
0:07:14 > 0:07:20Today, around 2.4 million people with disabilities have one.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23It allows them to park free of charge on roads,
0:07:23 > 0:07:26and normally without a time limit.
0:07:26 > 0:07:29The Government is now proposing to extend the scheme.
0:07:29 > 0:07:32It wants people with hidden disabilities and conditions
0:07:32 > 0:07:36like autism and dementia to be able to qualify for
0:07:36 > 0:07:39a blue badge, so they too can enjoy the freedom to get out
0:07:39 > 0:07:41where and when they want.
0:07:41 > 0:07:44For many parents, they tell us that sometimes they don't want to go out.
0:07:44 > 0:07:47They don't want to take their autistic son or daughter
0:07:47 > 0:07:51out to the shops, out to schools and services and other places,
0:07:51 > 0:07:53because they are worried about what might happen.
0:07:53 > 0:07:56But if they can park much closer to their destination,
0:07:56 > 0:07:59then they can easily take someone away if there is an issue
0:07:59 > 0:08:03or if there are difficulties when they are out and about.
0:08:03 > 0:08:06The Department for Transport says only some councils recognise hidden
0:08:06 > 0:08:09disabilities under the current scheme, because they interpret
0:08:09 > 0:08:13the existing rules differently.
0:08:13 > 0:08:17The proposals would be the biggest change to the scheme
0:08:17 > 0:08:19since it was first introduced.
0:08:19 > 0:08:21The plans will now go through an eight-week
0:08:21 > 0:08:23public consultation.
0:08:23 > 0:08:27Helena Lee, BBC News.
0:08:27 > 0:08:29Tennis, and Kyle Edmund has reached his first
0:08:29 > 0:08:32Grand Slam quarter final.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35The British number two beat the Italian, Andreas Seppi,
0:08:35 > 0:08:38in four sets at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
0:08:38 > 0:08:41Nick Parrott reports.
0:08:41 > 0:08:45Kyle Edmund could barely stand after his last match in Melbourne.
0:08:45 > 0:08:49Now he's reached greater heights than ever before.
0:08:49 > 0:08:52The mercury was at a merciful 26 degrees, but early on,
0:08:52 > 0:08:56it looked like Andreas Seppi could prove too hot to handle.
0:08:56 > 0:08:5927 places separate them in the world rankings.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02On court, it was much closer, with the Italian taking
0:09:02 > 0:09:05the first set on a tie-break.
0:09:05 > 0:09:09At 33, Seppi has a decade's experience on Edmund, and,
0:09:09 > 0:09:12at times, it showed.
0:09:12 > 0:09:15The Briton was broken first, but a change of footwear led
0:09:15 > 0:09:20to a change in fortunes, as he went on to level the match.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23Winning five games in a row saw Edmund grow in confidence
0:09:23 > 0:09:28and Seppi's stubborn resistance drain away.
0:09:28 > 0:09:31It took almost three hours to set up the biggest
0:09:31 > 0:09:32match of his career, but Edmund isn't
0:09:32 > 0:09:36getting carried away.
0:09:36 > 0:09:39You know, I have to believe I'm going to win, and believe
0:09:39 > 0:09:42in my game and stuff, so that's the way I approached it,
0:09:42 > 0:09:45one match at a time, and I'll continue to do that.
0:09:45 > 0:09:47Whatever happens next, Edmund will climb the rankings
0:09:47 > 0:09:50and give hope that Britain has found a successor to Andy Murray.
0:09:50 > 0:09:54Nick Parrott, BBC News.
0:09:54 > 0:09:58You can see more on all of today's stories on the BBC News Channel.
