0:00:11 > 0:00:14The Prime Minister calls on the UK and the EU to continue to cooperate
0:00:14 > 0:00:15on security after Brexit.
0:00:15 > 0:00:18Theresa May said a new treaty on foreign and defence policy should
0:00:18 > 0:00:19be effective by next year.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22The challenge for all of us today is finding the way to work together
0:00:22 > 0:00:24through a deep and special partnership between
0:00:24 > 0:00:28the UK and the EU.
0:00:28 > 0:00:31No more at the centre of his party - Henry Bolton is ousted
0:00:31 > 0:00:39as leader of UKIP.
0:00:39 > 0:00:42Lizzy Yarnold, she goes to the front, and how!
0:00:42 > 0:00:45Lizzy Yarnold leads the way, on a historic day for Team GB
0:00:45 > 0:00:46at the Winter Olympics.
0:00:46 > 0:00:48And the Olympic scandal of 1994 turned into
0:00:48 > 0:00:56a BAFTA nominated biopic.
0:01:12 > 0:01:13Good evening.
0:01:13 > 0:01:17The Prime Minister has called for a new security treaty
0:01:17 > 0:01:19with the European Union after Brexit, warning that
0:01:19 > 0:01:21lives could be at risk without full co-operation.
0:01:21 > 0:01:24In a speech in Germany, Theresa May said new arrangements
0:01:24 > 0:01:29over working together should be effective by next year.
0:01:29 > 0:01:31The President of the European Commission, Jean Claude Juncker,
0:01:31 > 0:01:33agreed that a post-Brexit security alliance was necessary -
0:01:33 > 0:01:35but said it should be negotiated separately from other issues,
0:01:35 > 0:01:36such as trade.
0:01:36 > 0:01:43Our political correspondent Vicki Young reports from Munich.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46In defence and security the UK is a significant player.
0:01:46 > 0:01:49The Prime Minister hopes that will get her a special deal.
0:01:49 > 0:01:51She arrived in Munich keen to lay out Britain's contribution.
0:01:51 > 0:01:54Generous spending on defence and expertise it wants
0:01:54 > 0:01:58to share even after Brexit.
0:01:58 > 0:02:04Theresa May urged the EU to take a practical approach.
0:02:04 > 0:02:07This cannot be a time when any of us allow competition between partners,
0:02:07 > 0:02:10rigid institutional restrictions or deep-seated ideology
0:02:10 > 0:02:12to inhibit our cooperation and jeopardise the security
0:02:12 > 0:02:18of our citizens.
0:02:18 > 0:02:21She's calling for a new security treaty so that the close
0:02:21 > 0:02:22partnership can continue.
0:02:22 > 0:02:27Failure to agree one would have damaging consequences, she said.
0:02:27 > 0:02:29We must do whatever is most practical and pragmatic
0:02:29 > 0:02:32in ensuring our collective security.
0:02:32 > 0:02:34Those who threaten our security would like nothing more
0:02:34 > 0:02:40than to see us fractured.
0:02:40 > 0:02:46Some listening to this were left bewildered.
0:02:46 > 0:02:49The Brexit decision from the point of view of us inside the EU
0:02:49 > 0:02:54is extremely regrettable.
0:02:54 > 0:02:57Things would be so much easier if you stayed.
0:02:57 > 0:03:04So here comes the question...
0:03:04 > 0:03:07APPLAUSE Mrs May pointed out that Brexit was a democratic decision
0:03:07 > 0:03:10politicians should respect.
0:03:10 > 0:03:15One senior Brussels figure seemed to agree.
0:03:15 > 0:03:18The commission President Jean-Claude Junker said the EU wasn't at war
0:03:18 > 0:03:22with the UK and didn't want to take revenge on the British people.
0:03:22 > 0:03:24He said the security bridge would be maintained,
0:03:24 > 0:03:26but you couldn't mix it up with other issues.
0:03:26 > 0:03:28Conservative MPs attending the conference here believe
0:03:28 > 0:03:33the speech is a good starting point for talks.
0:03:33 > 0:03:36We've got to start getting into the detail of this.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39One thing we can do is improve our offer around defence and security,
0:03:39 > 0:03:43and I do think we need to have another look in the UK as to how
0:03:43 > 0:03:44we prioritise security.
0:03:44 > 0:03:46So it's a pretty familiar message from Theresa May.
0:03:46 > 0:03:49The UK is leaving the European Union but that doesn't mean close
0:03:49 > 0:03:55cooperation needs to end.
0:03:55 > 0:04:00And it's a blunt message, too, saying to EU leaders,
0:04:00 > 0:04:02don't let your ideology get in the way of the safety
0:04:02 > 0:04:06of our citizens.
0:04:06 > 0:04:09The government hopes today's speech will show it's acting responsibly,
0:04:09 > 0:04:11not wanting to drag the important issue of security into fraught
0:04:11 > 0:04:12Brexit negotiations.
0:04:12 > 0:04:19Vicki Young, BBC News, Munich.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21Our political correspondent Susana Mendonca is here.
0:04:21 > 0:04:22We've had two big
0:04:22 > 0:04:24speeches this week on Brexit - are we any clearer
0:04:24 > 0:04:25on the way forward?
0:04:25 > 0:04:30Well I think we'd still a long way to go before we know what Brexit
0:04:30 > 0:04:33going to look like but if you look at the speech as we've had so far
0:04:33 > 0:04:36they seem to be about building bridges. Theresa May talking about
0:04:36 > 0:04:40that cooperation, unconditional cooperation between Britain and the
0:04:40 > 0:04:45EU. Certainly the EU Commission president made it clear that
0:04:45 > 0:04:49cooperation on security doesn't mean cooperation on trade. But it went
0:04:49 > 0:04:52down well with the Europeans, went down well with her Brexiteers. When
0:04:52 > 0:04:56you look at Boris Johnson's speech last week he was talking about
0:04:56 > 0:04:58bringing together Remainers and Brexiteers and looking at the
0:04:58 > 0:05:01positives but there wasn't much in the way of substance. In terms of
0:05:01 > 0:05:04what we'll get over the next week we understand there will be a series of
0:05:04 > 0:05:09speeches in this road to Brexit theme we're getting from number ten.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12We'll have speeches from David Davis, we understand David Lidington
0:05:12 > 0:05:16will give a speech where he talks about devolution. Something from
0:05:16 > 0:05:21Liam Fox, also talking about the positives. We are expecting a lot of
0:05:21 > 0:05:24speeches, whether or not we get the detail we are after remains to be
0:05:24 > 0:05:27seen.Thank you.
0:05:27 > 0:05:29Ukip has voted to remove its leader, Henry Bolton, following controversy
0:05:29 > 0:05:31over racist messages sent by his former partner
0:05:31 > 0:05:37about Prince Harry's fiancee, Meghan Markle.
0:05:37 > 0:05:40Mr Bolton had refused to stand down - but today over 60% of members
0:05:40 > 0:05:42backed a motion of no confidence in him.
0:05:42 > 0:05:45The party is now looking for its fifth leader in 18 months -
0:05:45 > 0:05:50as our political correspondent Alex Forsyth reports.
0:05:50 > 0:05:53Therefore Henry Bolton has been removed by the democratic decision
0:05:53 > 0:05:58of the membership...
0:05:58 > 0:06:00And with that, Ukip bid farewell to another short-lived leader.
0:06:00 > 0:06:03Henry Bolton had put his fate in the hands of the party
0:06:03 > 0:06:05members and five months after they elected him
0:06:05 > 0:06:12they voted him out.
0:06:12 > 0:06:17You don't embark on something like this, obviously,
0:06:17 > 0:06:20hoping to win through,
0:06:20 > 0:06:23and then find that you don't win through, without feeling, you know,
0:06:23 > 0:06:24some disappointment, of course.
0:06:24 > 0:06:27But hey, you know, take it on the chin and move on.
0:06:27 > 0:06:29It was his relationship with Jo Marney that led
0:06:29 > 0:06:34to questions over his future.
0:06:34 > 0:06:36She sent a series of offensive messages leading Ukip's ruling
0:06:36 > 0:06:39body to demand he quit.
0:06:39 > 0:06:43Today, party members voted and they endorsed that decision.
0:06:43 > 0:06:46So the MEP, Gerard Batten, has taken over temporarily.
0:06:46 > 0:06:48Before the fourth leadership contest in 18 months.
0:06:48 > 0:06:51Costly for a cash-strapped party.
0:06:51 > 0:06:57Ukip has to continue because we are the only opposition.
0:06:57 > 0:07:01This party was riding high after the Brexit referendum,
0:07:01 > 0:07:03but since then it's been in turmoil, struggling for direction
0:07:03 > 0:07:04and leadership.
0:07:04 > 0:07:09And there is a risk today's result could only deepen divisions.
0:07:09 > 0:07:12I think it's a big mistake and I think there are very few
0:07:12 > 0:07:18people within the party who potentially could be leader.
0:07:18 > 0:07:21Can Ukip survive another leadership contest now?
0:07:21 > 0:07:24Of course it can, of course it can.
0:07:24 > 0:07:27We're like, we're like vampires, you stake us, we come back to life,
0:07:27 > 0:07:29you can't get rid of us, I'm sorry.
0:07:29 > 0:07:30Plenty here believe in Ukip's future, its role
0:07:30 > 0:07:34in the Brexit debate.
0:07:34 > 0:07:37But many fear the turmoil at the top means it will never again be
0:07:37 > 0:07:38the influential force it once was.
0:07:38 > 0:07:41Alex Forsyth, BBC News, Birmingham.
0:07:41 > 0:07:43Team GB is celebrating its most successful day
0:07:43 > 0:07:49in Winter Olympic history.
0:07:49 > 0:07:51Lizzy Yarnold won Gold in the women's skeleton -
0:07:51 > 0:07:54becoming the first Briton ever to retain a Winter Olympic title.
0:07:54 > 0:07:58There was a Bronze too in the event - for her team-mate Laura Deas,
0:07:58 > 0:08:00and a Bronze in the ski slopestyle for Izzy Atkin.
0:08:00 > 0:08:03David Ornstein reports from Pyeongchang.
0:08:03 > 0:08:05Guiding Great Britain to unprecedented glory,
0:08:05 > 0:08:07Lizzy Yarnold and Laura Deas turning dreams into reality,
0:08:07 > 0:08:13rewriting the record books.
0:08:13 > 0:08:17COMMENTATOR:Lizzy Yarnold next, the Olympic champion,
0:08:17 > 0:08:20can she make history and win it again?
0:08:20 > 0:08:23Yarnold went into her final slide in second place,
0:08:23 > 0:08:26but conjured an imperious display, and the fastest time any woman has
0:08:26 > 0:08:30produced on this track, to enter sporting folklore.
0:08:30 > 0:08:34COMMENTATOR:That is a gold medal winning run, I'm sure of it.
0:08:34 > 0:08:37So it's gold for Lizzy Yarnold.
0:08:37 > 0:08:39She's defended her title and become the most decorated
0:08:39 > 0:08:43British Winter Olympian in history.
0:08:43 > 0:08:45She was joined on the podium by team-mate Laura Deas.
0:08:45 > 0:08:48The pair rounding off the most successful day their nation has ever
0:08:48 > 0:08:50seen at a Winter Games.
0:08:50 > 0:08:52As Yarnold jumped into the crowd to join the celebrations,
0:08:52 > 0:08:55how did she feel?
0:08:55 > 0:08:59I feel exhausted!
0:08:59 > 0:09:01Now a back-to-back champion, the 29-year-old couldn't
0:09:01 > 0:09:04hide her delight.
0:09:04 > 0:09:06I'm just so relieved that I've done the race,
0:09:06 > 0:09:11been consistent, and Laura and I are on the podium together.
0:09:11 > 0:09:16For her parents, Judith and Clive, another moment to savour.
0:09:16 > 0:09:18From the mixed season that she's had, to come and win
0:09:18 > 0:09:20the gold medal here today - and we have a bronze medal
0:09:20 > 0:09:26as well through Laura - is absolutely mind-boggling.
0:09:26 > 0:09:29The success story was started by the youngest member of Team GB,
0:09:29 > 0:09:3219-year-old Izzy Atkin saving her best until last to take
0:09:32 > 0:09:34bronze in the slopestyle and become Britain's first official

0:09:41 > 0:09:43COMMENTATOR:Great Britain's Izzy Atkin takes a bronze!
0:09:43 > 0:09:47Mum and dad, Winnie and Mike, overcome with joy.
0:09:47 > 0:09:48I'm still kind of speechless.
0:09:48 > 0:09:49I can't...
0:09:49 > 0:09:51I'm really excited, really happy.
0:09:51 > 0:09:57I'm stoked with how I skied and also stoked to win the bronze.
0:09:57 > 0:10:00The day was however tinged with disappointment
0:10:00 > 0:10:03as Elise Christie crashed out of the 1500 metres short track speed
0:10:03 > 0:10:06skating and was later disqualified.
0:10:06 > 0:10:09COMMENTATOR:Christie has crashed again now in the semifinal!
0:10:09 > 0:10:13She went to hospital as a precaution but was given the all clear and may

0:10:30 > 0:10:32But that will do little to dampen the British euphoria

0:14:06 > 0:14:12I mean come on, what kind of friggin' person bashes

0:14:29 > 0:14:30have their ups and downs?
0:14:30 > 0:14:31I made you a champion!
0:14:31 > 0:14:33Knowing you'd hate me for it.
