0:00:27 > 0:00:30Good afternoon.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34The United Nations Security Council is due to vote this evening

0:00:34 > 0:00:35on a resolution calling for a humanitarian

0:00:35 > 0:00:38ceasefire in Syria.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40It was due to be held yesterday, but was delayed

0:00:40 > 0:00:43by disagreements over the wording.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45The Syrian government is continuing its bombardment

0:00:45 > 0:00:47of the rebel-held area of Eastern Ghouta,

0:00:47 > 0:00:48near the capital Damascus.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51Activists say around 500 civilians have been killed in the last week,

0:00:51 > 0:00:58as Richard Galpin reports.

0:00:59 > 0:01:05The relentless bombing which began a week ago has shattered whole

0:01:05 > 0:01:09neighbourhoods in Eastern Ghouta. And shattered the lives of hundreds

0:01:09 > 0:01:14of people, many of them children. Besides those who have been injured,

0:01:14 > 0:01:20at least 120 children have been killed since last Sunday, according

0:01:20 > 0:01:24to human rights activists. The number of casualties overwhelming

0:01:24 > 0:01:28the hospitals, some of which themselves have been targeted in the

0:01:28 > 0:01:33air raids. And despite all this, the United Nations Security Council in

0:01:33 > 0:01:38New York has still not been able to pass a resolution, calling for a

0:01:38 > 0:01:43ceasefire because of objections from Russia.I'm extremely frustrated

0:01:43 > 0:01:47with the fact that the Security Council, we have been able to adopt

0:01:47 > 0:01:51a resolution to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people, very

0:01:51 > 0:01:55frustrated with that.The draft resolution calls for a 30 day

0:01:55 > 0:02:02ceasefire across the whole country, starting without delay. Extremist

0:02:02 > 0:02:05organisations al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group are excluded

0:02:05 > 0:02:10from this. The aim of the ceasefire is to get urgently needed aid into

0:02:10 > 0:02:12Eastern Ghouta, including medical supplies and to evacuate the

0:02:12 > 0:02:18injured. Whether this bombing campaign

0:02:18 > 0:02:21continues or can be temporarily halted now depends on another

0:02:21 > 0:02:25attempt at the UN Security Council to hold a vote later today, with

0:02:25 > 0:02:30Russia agreeing not to use its veto. With 500 people now reported to have

0:02:30 > 0:02:35been killed over the past week, the pressure is mounting on Russia to

0:02:35 > 0:02:43stop the bloodshed, at least for a few weeks. Richard Galpin, BBC News.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45Here, two people have appeared in court charged

0:02:45 > 0:02:47with causing the deaths of two brothers in Coventry

0:02:47 > 0:02:49by dangerous driving.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51Corey and Casper Platt-May, who were six and two,

0:02:51 > 0:02:54were on a family trip to a park when they were hit

0:02:54 > 0:02:59by a car on Thursday.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01Robert Brown, who's 53-years-old, and Gwendoline Harrison, who's 41,

0:03:01 > 0:03:06were remanded in custody.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08The International Committee of the Red Cross says more

0:03:08 > 0:03:11than 20 of its staff have been dismissed in the last three years

0:03:11 > 0:03:12for sexual misconduct.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14The disclosure is the result of an internal review

0:03:14 > 0:03:16of the Swiss-based organisation which has more than

0:03:16 > 0:03:1717,000 staff worldwide.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21The revelations are the latest to hit the aid sector in recent weeks.

0:03:21 > 0:03:27Our diplomatic correspondent Caroline Hawley joins me.

0:03:27 > 0:03:32What more can you tell us?The ICRC is working on the front lines around

0:03:32 > 0:03:38the world, it has done for decades. It says since 2015, 21 staff members

0:03:38 > 0:03:43were either dismissed all resigned for paying for sexual services. This

0:03:43 > 0:03:47is banned by the ICRC, even in countries where prostitution is

0:03:47 > 0:03:51legal. A further two members of staff didn't have their contracts

0:03:51 > 0:03:54renewed. The head of the ICRC said he was deeply saddened to report

0:03:54 > 0:03:58these incidents. He said he was concerned cases should have been

0:03:58 > 0:04:02reported before that were not all were not probably handled. The ICRC

0:04:02 > 0:04:07is the latest humanitarian organisation to reveal cases of

0:04:07 > 0:04:12misconduct in the wake of the Oxfam scandal. The International

0:04:12 > 0:04:17Development Secretary has given aid agencies 192 aid agencies who

0:04:17 > 0:04:21receive UK aid, given until Monday to spell out exactly what steps they

0:04:21 > 0:04:26have taken to safeguard people they work with around the world, and also

0:04:26 > 0:04:30to report individual cases to the right authorities. So there is a

0:04:30 > 0:04:33deadline that.Thank you very much.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35The US government is considering appointing a special envoy

0:04:35 > 0:04:37to Northern Ireland in a bid to break the political

0:04:37 > 0:04:40impasse, and restore the power sharing government.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43During a meeting with the Irish Deputy Prime Minister in Washington,

0:04:43 > 0:04:44the US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson,

0:04:44 > 0:04:49said they were considering a list of people for the role.

0:04:49 > 0:04:50Northern Ireland has been without devolved government

0:04:50 > 0:04:53for 13 months, after a coalition led by the Democratic Unionist Party

0:04:53 > 0:04:57and Sinn Fein collapsed.

0:04:57 > 0:05:02A former senior adviser to Donald Trump has admitted charges

0:05:02 > 0:05:07of conspiracy and lying to investigators, who are examining

0:05:07 > 0:05:10Russian political interference in the 2016 presidential election.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13In a plea deal, Rick Gates admitted conspiracy to defraud the government

0:05:13 > 0:05:15and making false statements.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18He's become the third associate of the president to agree

0:05:18 > 0:05:24to co-operate with a special investigation.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27A number of US companies have cut ties with the National

0:05:27 > 0:05:28Rifle Association, as consumers call for

0:05:28 > 0:05:31a boycott of firms linked to the powerful gun lobby.

0:05:31 > 0:05:35They include the car rental companies Hertz

0:05:35 > 0:05:38and Enterprise Holdings, both of which have stopped offering

0:05:38 > 0:05:40discounts to members of the Association, in the wake

0:05:40 > 0:05:41of the Florida school shooting.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45Our North America correspondent Peter Bowes reports.

0:05:45 > 0:05:51The aftermath to a school shooting that could prompt change in America.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54Amidst the grieving, the mood has been different this time.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56Within hours of a gunman killing 17 people, anger

0:05:56 > 0:05:58overflowed onto the streets.

0:05:58 > 0:06:02CHANTITNG "NEVER AGAIN"

0:06:02 > 0:06:04Now it's social media where pressure is being exerted

0:06:04 > 0:06:07on the hugely powerful gun lobby.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10Under the hashtag BoycottNRA, activists are targeting firms that

0:06:10 > 0:06:14offer special benefits to members of the National Rifle Association,

0:06:14 > 0:06:17and they include some of the most familiar corporate names.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20The car rental companies Hertz and Enterprise,

0:06:20 > 0:06:23which also owns Alamo and National.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25They're ending discounts offered to members of the gun lobby

0:06:25 > 0:06:28group from next month.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30MetLife Insurance and the software company Symantec are

0:06:30 > 0:06:33taking similar action.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35There's been no word in response from the NRA.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38It's unclear whether these actions will hurt an organisation that

0:06:38 > 0:06:42boasts 5 million members.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45During the week, its chief executive hit out at the protesters.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48Their goal is to eliminate the Second Amendment

0:06:48 > 0:06:50and our firearms freedoms, so they can eradicate

0:06:50 > 0:06:53all individual freedoms.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57Donald Trump says he's open to new ideas, but the one he seems

0:06:57 > 0:07:02to like best is giving guns to teachers.

0:07:02 > 0:07:03It's concealed.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06So this crazy man who walked in wouldn't even know

0:07:06 > 0:07:08who it is that has it.

0:07:08 > 0:07:09That's good.

0:07:09 > 0:07:10That's not bad, that's good.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13And a teacher would have shot the hell out of him before

0:07:13 > 0:07:14he knew what happened.

0:07:14 > 0:07:18The debate over what to do next will be highly charged

0:07:18 > 0:07:19and intensely political.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22Peter Bowes, BBC News.

0:07:24 > 0:07:28A UK ticket holder has won nearly £78 million in the EuroMillions draw

0:07:28 > 0:07:32after sharing the jackpot with a winner from Spain.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36The jackpot has been growing since the turn of the year

0:07:36 > 0:07:38and was the third biggest in the draw's history.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47With Winter Olympics news on the rest of the sport, here is Mike

0:07:47 > 0:07:54Bushell at the BBC Sports Centre. Thank you.

0:07:54 > 0:07:56It's been a day of roller-coaster emotions for Great Britain,

0:07:56 > 0:07:58on the penultimate day of the Winter Olympics.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01In the early hours, Billy Morgan's bronze medal made it Britain's

0:08:01 > 0:08:04best winter games ever, but a sixth medal proved out

0:08:04 > 0:08:04of reach of the women's curlers.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06Andy Swiss reports.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09And he needs to go absolutely stratospheric.He's a former acrobat

0:08:09 > 0:08:14with a dodgy knee but Billy Morgan was about to leap into history.

0:08:14 > 0:08:21Billy Morgan, yes!At 28, Morgan is a snowboarding veteran, this is his

0:08:21 > 0:08:24last jump at surely his last Olympics, what a way to finish. That

0:08:24 > 0:08:29is absolutely huge!It propelled Morgan into bronze medal position

0:08:29 > 0:08:35and one by one, his rivals' hopes came tumbling down. He's gone! When

0:08:35 > 0:08:42the last one crashed, Morgan to his utter disbelief, had his medal. It's

0:08:42 > 0:08:45pretty mad. If everybody landed their runs I wouldn't be in this

0:08:45 > 0:08:49position. It's a bit of luck, luck of the draw, it came down to me on

0:08:49 > 0:08:53the day, happy days.Morgenpost Majoli was also Team GB's. A

0:08:53 > 0:08:58record-breaking fifth medal of these Games.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02The British team have had their ups and downs here but Billy Morgan has

0:09:02 > 0:09:06ensured they hit their target of making this their most successful

0:09:06 > 0:09:11Winter Olympics in history. They have had £30 million of

0:09:11 > 0:09:17funding, double bid last Games but those in charge insist it's worth

0:09:17 > 0:09:21it.We knew it was going to be a theatre of jeopardy, high-risk, high

0:09:21 > 0:09:25reward, consistency required, lots of delivery under pressure, so the

0:09:25 > 0:09:30athletes phenomenally well. But could Team GB add one more to their

0:09:30 > 0:09:35tally? The women's curlers in a bronze medal play-off against Japan,

0:09:35 > 0:09:39which proved predictably edgy. That's unlucky.The British team

0:09:39 > 0:09:44with a slender 2-1 lead at the halfway point but by the final end

0:09:44 > 0:09:49it was Japan that had a 1-point advantage. But Britain were closest,

0:09:49 > 0:09:53extra time beckoned but Eve Muirhead went for broke with calamitous

0:09:53 > 0:09:58results. In going for glory, she knocked out her own stone, handing

0:09:58 > 0:10:03Japan the bronze and Britain only bitter disappointment. It's hard to

0:10:03 > 0:10:09say we're going home with nothing. We battled so hard, and as I say,

0:10:09 > 0:10:14I'm devastated that it didn't turn out well for us.No doubting the

0:10:14 > 0:10:20day's mixed extraordinary feat. After winning gold on skis last

0:10:20 > 0:10:26weekend, it was gold on a snowboard for the Czech Republic rider. Two

0:10:26 > 0:10:35titles, two sports, one quite extraordinary athlete.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39So with the curling over, rugby union's Six Nations

0:10:39 > 0:10:40takes centre stage.

0:10:40 > 0:10:41Ireland take on Wales in Dublin this afternoon,

0:10:41 > 0:10:44and then live here on BBC one from 4:45, it's Scotland

0:10:44 > 0:10:45against England.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47Our man in place at Murrayfield is Olly Foster.

0:10:47 > 0:10:54Keeping warm. Hello. Hello. This is the oldest fixture in

0:10:54 > 0:10:58international rugby. Scotland against England. Always plenty of

0:10:58 > 0:11:01needle, so much history down the years but in recent years, England

0:11:01 > 0:11:05have just hoovered up the Calcutta Cup. They have won the last eight,

0:11:05 > 0:11:12haven't lost the Scot since 2008 the Scots always come into these matches

0:11:12 > 0:11:15with hope, hope they can scupper another title push from the English.

0:11:15 > 0:11:20It is so tight at the top of the table, Ireland are top of that Six

0:11:20 > 0:11:24Nations table as we head to the halfway stage of this championship.

0:11:24 > 0:11:28In the next couple of minutes, what a match that is going to be in

0:11:28 > 0:11:31Dublin, as Ireland take on the Welsh. Both teams have described

0:11:31 > 0:11:36that as their cup final.Ollie Foster at Murrayfield.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38One early kick off in the Premier League this lunchtime

0:11:38 > 0:11:40with strugglers Stoke City the visitors to Leicester.

0:11:40 > 0:11:45Stoke took the lead just before half-time. Shaqiri continuing his

0:11:45 > 0:11:48great recent form and a brilliant goal. Leicester were gifted a way

0:11:48 > 0:11:53back into it. How about this for a horrendous goalkeeping error from

0:11:53 > 0:11:57Jack Butland? Fumbling the ball into his own net. 1-1 it remained with

0:11:57 > 0:11:58just six minutes to go.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01That is all be sporting out, back to you.

0:12:01 > 0:12:02Thank you.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05You can see more on all of today's stories on the BBC News Channel.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08The next news on BBC One is at 7 - bye for now.
